Do you have some memorable advice you've been given? It could be the best advice or the worst advice -- drop yours in the comments!

We've all encountered people that love to give their opinion or advice. And often this is unsolicited. Sometimes people give unsolicited advice as a projection from their own experiences.

This ties into a recent episode on 5 things we do that hold us back -- which is dimming ourselves to make other people comfortable. And don't let others tamper your dreams either, even if it feels like a risk. We have to take risks, sometimes calculated ones, in order to grow. Take it from Oprah!

Resource: Oprah on taking risks

Regardless of getting good or bad advice, we can always use them as lessons.

Steve Pemberton shares his raw and vulnerable story of a childhood of growing up without parents. Shuffled through the foster care system, he was the 3rd generation to be orphaned in his family. He decided that he needed to end the cycle for himself, his children and future generations. His desire to accomplish this was further fueled when his oldest child asked about his childhood. This was the catalyst to writing his first book, A Chance In The World. Steve intended to write this book solely for his own children, never imagining that it would become a bestseller and later be made into a motion picture.

Through this journey, he developed The Lighthouse Effect, also the name of the 2nd book. Steve dives into this concept and how this applies to people in life.

This episode unpacks the book Psychopath Free by Jackson MacKenzie. You can grab a copy HERE.This seemed like the perfect content as follow up to World Narcissistic Abuse Awareness Day on June 1st.Ginny shares some of the key components from this book, including the red flags of being in a relationship with a psychopath, narcissist or sociopath. The author includes a comprehensive list of 30 in the book! Some other key highlights are pulling out some terminology that's used by the author that we haven't covered here before, such as having a constant, cognitive dissonance, word salad, flying monkeys and the crazy ex!What's great about this book is that it focuses a lot on becoming whole again through trauma recovery and healing after encountering these dangerous personalities. While it may be tempting to reach out to the new supply, think about putting yourself in the idealization phase and thinking you've met the love of our life, would you be receptive to believing it?Keep in mind, there's no timeline for grief or recovering from this type of abuse. The author also highlights the 30 signs of strength. A few of these are having compassion, taking accountability, apologizing, and being forgiving.Part of the healing process includes cognitive defusion. This means acknowledging your emotions and not dismissing the difficulties in life. This allows you to choose to move towards living more consistently in joy, peace and enlightenment.Connect with Ginny:WEBSITE to book Ginny for speakingINSTAGRAMNEWSLETTERLINKEDINFACEBOOKYOUTUBECheck out the podcast, From First Period To Last Period:In a world where women are exposed to thousands of messages every day telling us how to take care of our bodies and minds, From First Period To Last Period, brought to you by Rescripted, is dedicated to shining a light on all of the women’s health topics that have long been considered taboo — from UTIs to painful periods — so you can be your own best health advocate. If you’ve ever stayed up late Googling your symptoms but blacked out 5 minutes before a doctor’s appointment because you couldn’t remember what questions to ask, From First Period To Last Period is for you. Emily Jaenson’s motto is “Be so good they won’t forget you!” and she lives this motto each day in her work as a keynote speaker for companies and employee resource groups across the US teaching them to empower their confidence, achieve their biggest goals, and use their voice to make a difference for themselves and their communities.

Jaenson leads a podcast, Leadership is Female, where she interviews executives so that she and her guests can lead the next generation of leadership forward. The show is in the Top 10% of most followed podcasts worldwide and Top 200 Business podcasts, globally.

Emily’s 2022 TEDx talk on confidence reached over 3 million views in one year. Emily speaks on the topic of confidence, goal setting, and intention to companies and organizations around the world.

Emily Jaenson grew up in northern Illinois and attended the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign graduating from the College of Media with a degree in Advertising. To pursue her dream of working in sports, Jaenson turned down an ad agency offer to intern with the Chicago Bulls ticket department where she sold season and group tickets during the 2005-2006 season. 80 calls a day, hitting the phones, to fill the United Center on game day truly taught her that the fans are the lifeblood of any sports organization and sales is the foundation of any business.

Jaenson went on to work for Muscular Dystrophy Association in Chicago leading fundraising and partnership efforts across events, programs, and partnerships. She later ran a small marketing agency. In 2013 the Reno Aces, a Triple-A Minor League baseball team and affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, came calling where Jaenson grew from sponsorship account executive to Vice President in two years.

In 2016 Jaenson left Reno with her family for Houston where she had a chance to volunteer for Super Bowl 51, worked as Sales Director on the World Corporate Games Houston and the inaugural Houston Sports Awards Show, and worked for Houston Methodist, the number one hospital in Texas, to manage business development through their sports partnerships.

Emily returned to the Reno Aces to serve as General Manager in 2018-2022. Jaenson became the first female general manage in Triple-A Baseball in nearly 20 years.

Above all, Emily is a devoted wife and adoring mother. She is an avid runner, wholeheartedly passionate about leadership, instilling confidence, and relentlessly seeking thrilling adventures.

You can't change the people around you, but you can change the people around you. Read that again!

It's important to keep in mind that you can't change people's behaviors or actions. You can only change your own. But you can change the people in your community. You're only as good as the company you keep.

Narcissists will often discard people that they can't control or are no longer giving them the supply they want. The motivation behind this is different than a healthy person -- it's usually to find peace or to protect yourself when making a decision to no longer engage with someone that is bringing toxicity to your life.

If you are working to remove narcissists or other dangerous personalities from your life, you may want to consider utilizing the grey rock method. Tune into Season 1, Episode 18 for more on this.

When you change, grow and evolve, sometimes the people around you are uncomfortable with your growth as it highlights that they may not be growing. They may be used to an older version of you and might not like this.

When you remove negative and toxic energy from your life, it creates space to invest in the healthy and meaningful relationships in your life to flourish. These relationships become deeper and you also naturally welcome into your life more warm, loving & authentic people into your community as well.

You can always come back to paying attention to your emotional bank account and notice how interactions leave you feeling.

This tip came from needing the reminder herself after last week's ROR (React, Observe, Respond) episode as well as the topic of being busy in last week's newsletter.

Mercury is in retrograde AND it's a solar eclipse -- maybe that's why strange things have been happening?! 😂

Here's the tip: Don't take it personally. Someone's reaction is rarely about you, but it's always about them.

You can use this tool she shares about how to add some perspective and objectivity about how you react and respond to situations. It's about looking at how much impact this situation has right now and then in periods of time in the future. How important will this be in 3 seconds, 3 minutes, 3 hours, 3 weeks....etc?

Can you relate? Did you need to hear this? Answer in the poll!

In this episode, Ginny opens up about a recent experience on reacting and shifting that to responding. A big part of that is the observation component. On a Peloton ride, the concept of ROR developed - React, Observe, Respond. The shift in the process from recognizing and observing the reaction and moving to a response that brought peace was profound. A response is an observed reaction. How can you incorporate this into your life?Connect with Ginny:WEBSITEINSTAGRAMFACEBOOK--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ginny-priem/message

Reesa Teesa has been EVERYWHERE. In case you haven't heard, she shares her "Who TF Did I Marry" story over a series of 52 TikToks. To say it went viral would be an understatement. Her followers doubled day over day and since then, she's been on Good Morning America, The Tamron Hall Show and many others.

In this episode, we unpack many tactics of dangerous personalities, like narcissists, psychopaths and sociopaths: DARVO, gaslighting, love bombing, the idealization phase, mirroring, pathological lying, entitlement, smear campaign, creating confusion, discarding, control, manipulation and more.

On the flip side, Reesa Teesa expressed and exhibited many signs and symptoms of being a victim/target of a dangerous personality, such as: going no contact, self-preservation, trauma, CPTSD, being confused, humiliation, embarrassment, shame, stigma, anger, and ultimately sharing her authentic story in hopes to help people.

There are many similarities to Ginny's story she shares in her bestselling book, You're My Favorite, about her experience and what she endured with "Chad".

There's even a dadism in this episode.

If you found this helpful or entertaining, give it a like and review 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟. Know someone that might enjoy or need to hear this? Share it!

This is a concept that came from sitting next to a seat mate on an airplane. He read You're My Favorite and sent a DM after finishing saying that the story reminded him of the Japanese art form called Kintsugi.

The idea is that rather than throwing away a broken item, usually a piece of pottery, often a bowl or vase, they are repaired with gold.

So, when you apply this concept to life, we really have 3 options:

1.) You can throw the broken item away because it's garbage. Perhaps you view it as unrepairable or not worth acknowledging or fixing. You discard it.

2.) You can try to patch the pieces back together and try to camouflage or conceal the breaks as though nothing happened or as though there was nothing wrong with it to begin with.

3.) OR - what if - like in Kintsugi, you highlight and embrace the breaks, difficulties, struggles and challenges. Because what if that's what makes us whole, and a beautiful masterpiece and uniquely us.

While, the origin of Kintsugi is unknown, here are some resources.

It might not be the question that you think! Sometimes the exact question varies, or it's in the form of a statement, but the theme is consistent. The question is "What about the kids?" Don't forget to follow Drinking With Gin, leave a review and share with a friend. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟Maggie Holland is our special guest today. She's a Licensed Mental Health Counselor and is passionate about helping women through anxiety, depression and stress. She's also well-versed in narcissism. This episode provides an in-depth overview of the concept of Triangulation. While triangulation can innocently happen in healthy situations and relationships from time to time, it can become dangerous when narcissists use it as a manipulative tactic. This is when they try to pull someone else into an argument or disagreement to get them on their side and gang up on you, making you question your thoughts, beliefs or experience. Sometimes, they can even use a generalized group of people or an imaginary group and say things like, "everyone I've talked to about this agrees with me." They may need that validation because they don't have a leg to stand on.Maggie talks through the dynamics of who is involved, the process, why narcissists use it, and how to recognize when this is happening as well as how to navigate and react. While you might think this only happens in romantic relationships, she sheds light on how this can persist in relationships with family, siblings, friends and even co-workers.Read Maggie's full article in Choosing Therapy on the topic: https://www.choosingtherapy.com/narcissistic-triangulation/Maggie's Website: https://www.maggiehollandcounselingpllc.comMaggie’s coaching/writing site: http://www.mentalhealthwithmaggie.com/Maggie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/mental_health_with_maggie/?hl=enConnect with Ginny:Book for Speaking: https://www.ginnypriem.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ginnypriem/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GinnypriemLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ginny-priem-8a87248/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ginnypriem/featured--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/ginny-priem/message

Is there something you've been procrastinating? Or what about waiting to be ready to start something? This episode is chock-full of useful and scientific information -- including the makeup of and possible contributors of the wiring of the brain -- on why we procrastinate and how to improve in this area. People may want to wait until they're ready to start something, but according to Seth Godin, if you wait until you are ready, it is almost certainly too late. People can procrastinate for a variety of different reasons, including being fearful that they might not be good at something, or it's not an enjoyable task. Maybe they perceive that it will take too long. Usually things take less time to do than predicted! It's often not the action that is the issue, it's starting. That's why at the beginning of every workout, Peloton instructor Jess Sims says that you've completed the hardest part...showing up. Imagine if you started what you've been putting off when you thought about starting it. It's about progress and not perfection. Mel Robbins says, "Start late. Start over. Start scared. Start again. Just start."

It's a one on one chat with Ginny this week. And it's a good one! This week is all about diving into how we think about and talk to ourselves.

Do you engage in negative self-talk? Well, data shows that we have up to 60,000 thoughts per day and up 80% -- EIGHT PERCENT -- of those thoughts are negative.

Imagine the changes you can create when you start doing this one thing?! When you start speaking to and treating yourself with more kindness. Imagine the transformation you can cultivate for yourself. This is one thing that we have so much control over, but we have to be completely honest with ourselves in order to be able to make this shift and see the impact it can have on our lives.

It's time to start building yourself up and stop beating yourself up. Our thoughts create our feelings, our feelings shape our mood and our mood creates our reality. Woah!

Ginny is offering newsletter subscribers and podcast listeners first access to a new downloadable that can help you make this shift.

It's called The KindKey Mindshift Workbook and you can download it here. https://www.ginnypriem.com/products/p/o6tpaa4kkrbceecmb7usmq2oht549y

It's a 14-page workbook that provides context and data to support this concept as well as a quick quiz to provide you with a baseline. You'll also learn how to make this shift in an easy to follow step-by-step guide. There are monthly, weekly and other meaningful worksheets that you can print out as many times as you'd like so you can track your progress and see what you're proud of in changing your old thoughts into new thoughts.

She shares the 4 main types of negative self-talk according to Mayo Clinic -- catastrophizing, personalizing, filtering and polarizing -- with examples and how you can shift these to more positive thoughts in an easy to follow 3-step process.

We can't change the past or our previous thoughts, but we can cultivate the future ones starting right now. It's not just about downloading the workbook. You have to commit to doing the work and unlocking your secret power that you already have within you: The KindKey.

Positive self-talk and thoughts can help you improve longevity, decrease stress, improve overall well-being and much more, according to Mayo Clinic.

Think about your life and reality today. And then think about if tomorrow, next week, next month, next year -- do you want your life to be the same, worse or better. If you said better, the KindKey Mindshift Workbook will help you track your progress and how your thoughts, feelings and mood contribute to your overall wellbeing. Download it today and get started.

Have you ever wondered why someone is so sensitive? Or perhaps you've wondered if you're being sensitive or even overly sensitive. What if there was data that supported that there may be reasons behind feeling things more, both physically and emotionally, than the average person. Maybe you can sense someone else's feelings, or are deeply moved by music or the beauty of nature. Sensitive to crowds, loud sounds, itchy fabrics? These are just a few things that could be indicators of being an HSP. In the 1990s Dr. Elaine Aron pioneered research on the topic of what it means to be a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP.) Dr. Elizabeth Scott provides her expertise on this topic and dives deep on what it means to be an HSP, how to cope with it, and sheds light on how being an HSP may be linked to being a child of a narcissist! You can take a quiz that is linked through Dr. Scott's Verywell Mind article that is linked below.

Dr. Melissa Madeson joins us to discuss loneliness. She shares with us the root causes, symptoms, and some key strategies people can implement to feel less lonely and potentially prevent loneliness as well.

She explains the difference between transient and chronic loneliness. There is also quite a bit of discussion around feeling your feelings, being able to name your emotions and how to shift them.

At one point, she says that "what you resist persists" and this made so much sense! She discusses the benefits of meditation, therapy, nature, hobbies and journaling to help lift your spirits. Much of what is discusses also stems around being comfortable with yourself, knowing yourself and ultimately loving yourself.

Another big moment is when she explains that emotions aren't mutually exclusive. You can experience joy, even in difficult times. You can be happy doing something, even if you're grieving.

This episode is chalk full of helpful information from an expert on how to kick loneliness in the butt!

More about Dr. Melissa Madeson:

Melissa Madeson is a licensed therapist in Flower Mound, Texas. She has a PhD in Sport Exercise from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She also has an MEd in Counseling & Human Development from Hardin Simmons University and a BA in Psychology and MS in Kinesiology & Sport Performance from California State University, Sacramento. Melissa is Gottman level 1 and level 2 certified.

More from Melissa:

My Passion Is Helping People Deepen Their Most Meaningful Relationships. I pride myself on being compassionate, empathetic, and deeply caring. I am loyal, dedicated, hardworking, and driven.

I have experienced the highs and lows of life like so many. I have personally struggled with depression and anxiety and have also lost a younger brother to a drug overdose. At the same time, my life has had its fair share of joys—I married my best friend and soulmate and have experienced the life-giving power of relationships time and again. All of these experiences inform the work I do with clients. Today, I have my own full-time psychotherapy practice and work with individuals, couples, and families.

My Approach To The Healing Process: I take a holistic approach to mental health and relationship counseling. Sessions with me are so much more than just talk therapy—I use a bottom-up approach to help clients feel grounded and centered, get in touch with their body, and connect to themselves on a deeper level. As a certified yoga teacher, I prioritize incorporating the wisdom of the body into my work with clients. Since the mind and body are inherently connected, true healing means working with both of them simultaneously. In my work with couples, I primarily draw from an approach called the Gottman Method and also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) & Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) No matter which approach works best for you, I am confident that I can help you improve your relationships with your loved ones and deepen your connection with yourself in the process.

Dr. Tanya Holthus is back! She was a guest on Season 1 and her content and approach was so impactful, it was a top episode, so I wanted to invite her back to hear more from her.

This episode was requested by a listener and in it, Tanya shares with us the details of love bombing, why it is so effective, how narcissists use it and provides some really great examples of what love bombing is and what it isn't.

She also provides significant context around how this can happen not just in romantic relationships, but also in familial relationships, with colleagues and with friends.

She also breaks down DARVO for us. This is a manipulative tactic that narcissists use and falls under the umbrella of gaslighting. It's an acronym that stands for Deny, Attack, Reverse, Victim & Offender. It can leave the victim feeling confused and make them question reality.

Tanya also gets into some of the science of the wiring of the brain and why narcissists may throw what's referred to as "adult temper tantrums" and how/why they may even believe their own lies or deny behavior and actions they did indeed engage in or perform.

More about Dr. Tanya Holthus:

Tanya is a licensed psychologist and is here for you. She sees most everyone for most everything.

She enjoys working with a wide variety of clients and offers multiple services including therapy,

coaching, and supervision. She meets you wherever you are at and applies what will fit for you in the

moment.

She specializes in healing trauma and helping people with many types of issues, including post-

traumatic stress, attachment/connection, emotional/relational abuse, anxiety, depression, and

relationship issues. She is most passionate about helping people overcome relationships

involving narcissistic abuse and strengthening parent-child relationships. She also has a special

place in her heart for people suffering with fertility issues. She views things through a trauma lens

and tends to weave this into all of her work. She provides psychoeducation, teaches how to navigate

healthy boundaries, guides healing, and will help you gain clarity to bring peace in your life.

She uses an integrative approach of many modalities to fit the unique needs of each person. Some

of these modalities include parental coaching, Filial Play Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Eye

Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and Adaptive Internal Relations (AIR)

Network.

People who have worked with her have described her as warm, compassionate, easy to talk to,

empathetic, and reliable. She loves her work as a psychologist. She will go to bat for you and will work

hard for you. She has been doing this a long time and is confident that she can help with any

presenting concern you may have.

We're back for Season 2! In the last episode of Season 1, I shared that I'd be taking a break to focus on some other big news. And that big news is here -- it's book #2! I released my 2nd book as the follow up to my #1 bestseller, You're My Favorite.

The 2nd book is titled I'm My Favorite: A Guided Journal for Your Path Forward. This guided journal is filled not only with context to help support the tools within, but also with beautiful artwork, inspirational quotes, worksheets, journal prompts and exercises that you can incorporate into daily life to help you on your path forward. These tools are designed to help you overcome adversity and more confidently face and tackle any challenges that come your way in the future. There is data that supports the power of putting pen to paper and I've shared a link to an article below.

There was a launch party at Jetset Underground in NE Minneapolis followed by a wine pairing at Sip Better in the North Loop.

I then headed to Chicago for a book signing at Heirloom Bookstore before heading back to Minneapolis for two workshops to support the book release!

It's been a blast and I'm really glad I was able to focus on all of that, but it feels so good to be back on the podcast studio and connecting with you here. I'm really excited about what's in store for you this season as we explore more useful topics, bring on expert guests and guests with inspiring stories.

In this solo episode, Ginny kicks things off with her sidekick -- her drink. And the beverage of choice for this conversation is a margarita because they can be a little bit spicy and a little bit sweet. Work-life balance is a topic that we hear people preach about. But does it actually exist? Ginny may have an unpopular opinion on this but she doesn't believe it exists. And that's because it's all just life. It comes down to prioritizing what's important at the time and being present for that. Whether that is work, family time, dinner, time with friends, kids' activities, vacation, exercise, or whatever else you have going on in life. She shares a story about the first time she was forced to check out from work while on vacation because she unexpectedly didn't have any cell phone service. If you're a leader and you preach work-life balance but don't practice it yourself, pay attention to how that impacts your team. What we say and do can have tremendous influence on those around us. No one is going to remember how much you worked, except maybe your kids. It's important to keep everything in life in balance.

As the great Dolly Parton says, "Don't be so busy making a living that you forget to make a life."

This is an inspiring story that you won't want to miss a single second of. Guest, Cat Kozuch, shares how she used the power of affirmations, visualization and a positive mindset to prove the medical team wrong after a horrific accident left her paralyzed from the neck down. Cat's ability to keep a positive mindset through her grim diagnosis has helped her overcome much in life and she's now using her experience to help sprinkle positivity and bring the power of affirmations into children's lives with her new product, Believe a Buddy.

About Cat:

Cat Kozuch, the founder of Believe a Buddy, whose life story is a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in the face of adversity.

Cat, an Adelaide-born Arizona immigrant and motivational survivor, defied the odds after a life-altering dune buggy accident in 2008, leaving her initially paralyzed. Cat broke her back in 2 places, and after an emergency surgery, doctors delivered the crushing news that she would never walk again.

Instead of believing in her daunting diagnosis, Cat wrote an affirmation on her hospital whiteboard that stated, "Cat will walk out of here!...duh!". After weeks of speaking her affirmation out loud, Cat was frustrated and started yelling at her big toe, "BIG TOE MOVE, BIG TOE MOVE, BIG TOE MOVE" and right before her eyes, a miracle happened, her big toe moved the tiniest bit! After hundreds of hours of physical therapy, three months later, Cat walked out of the hospital.

During her three-month hospital stay, her father was traveling for work, and every time he came back to visit her, he brought her a new teddy bear. The collection of teddy bears were pinned around the whiteboard affirmation. Cat's inspirational affirmation with the blend of cute teddy bears from her father led to the creation of Believe a Buddy.

Believe a Buddy was born from Cat's desire to share her story of triumph and inspire kids facing their own challenges. Through the power of affirmations and the comforting companionship of teddy bears, Believe a Buddy helps kids believe in themselves.

Cat Kozuch's life is a shining example of the human spirit's resilience and the transformative power of belief. Her journey from paralysis to walking again serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that with unwavering determination and a positive mindset, anything is possible. Through Believe a Buddy, Cat continues to touch lives, spreading her message of hope and inspiring others to believe in their own miracles.

Ginny brings on an expert guest in this episode. Dr. Kathy Lee Parkin is here to share some perspective on narcissists and their behaviors, patterns, and potential abuse around money. This episode was sparked because a couple of months ago, one of

Ginny's mom's friends (yes, you read that right) texted her and asked her for $15k for her mom to pay off some debt so she could buy a different house. Needless to say this felt really ick for Ginny, especially give the history of her relationship with her mom. Dr. Parkin provides insight into some of the patterns and behaviors Ginny's seen and experienced around some people that may project how successful they are and how much money they have, but the truth is, they're finances are chaotic and not what they appear. On the flip side, some narcissists may hoard money or be cheap when they're attempting to play the victim. And certainly, when they display generosity, there always seems to be a hook or they're score keeping. If you loved this episode, please share it with a friend or 10!

Dr. Kristy Lee Parkin holds a doctorate in psychology and master of business administration. She is a licensed funeral director and certified life coach and has been teaching various disciplines for over 15 years. Dr. Parkin completed her dissertation research on the phenomena of post-traumatic growth in divorced mothers and focuses her current research and writings on narcissism and how it affects different ages, relationships, and personal development. She is currently working on her second book on post-separation abuse to follow up her first book on navigating divorce, “Healing Unhappy Endings”.

This episode covers a topic that many people struggle with...asking for help. The inspiration to this topic was from Ginny doing a quick survey months ago with a group of friends and asked them what phrase they had the hardest time with and it was, "I need help." So many of us don't want to ask for help because it feels like we're being a burden or we're embarrassed or just think that we should be able to do everything on our own. But there's the saying "it takes a village" for a reason. We can accomplish so much more when we get to know ourselves and know where are gaps are and then asking for it. There's the asking for help and then actually receiving it and being okay with accepting it. If we're confident and comfortable with who we are, it becomes easier to ask. And in that same comfort comes with wanting to help others. When you've got the right community, people will be happy to help chip in and support you. We can get more done in a shorter period when we have help and we'll probably make less mistakes along the way.

Arshay Cooper is a Rower, Bestselling and Award-winning Author, A 2x Golden Oar recipient for his contributions to the sport of rowing, a motivational speaker, activist, and the protagonist of the film, A Most Beautiful Thing. (Executive produced by Academy-Award and Grammy winner Common, NBA stars Grant Hill and Dwyane Wade, the Winklevoss Twins, and Olympian Mary Mazzio). Arshay grew up on the West Side of Chicago in a community surrounded by gangs and drugs. In 1997 he joined (and later became captain of) the country's first All-Black high school rowing team at Manley High School, an experience that changed his life. He then dedicated two years of his life to AmeriCorps, focusing on DEI, and soon after that attended Le Cordon Bleu, becoming a personal chef for World Wrestling Entertainment, Warner Brothers film sets, and professional athletes. After years as an entrepreneur in the food service industry, Arshay returned to his true passion: working with young people. He founded the NY East Side Rowing Club and worked as the national youth program guidance counselor for Victory Outreach International. Arshay also helped start several rowing programs for low-income youth across the country, anywhere a puddle of water exists, so that other young people can experience the profound change that can happen on the water. Arshay is the founder of the National Award-Winning Non-Profit, The A Most Beautiful Thing Inclusion Fund, which introduces thousands of under-resourced youth to the sport of rowing. Arshay’s mission has sparked the MLK Day of Service “DAY ON'' for collegiate and high school sports teams across the country and community rowing events between local police and community members. Arshay's message has spread all across the world, speaking for the members of Congress, the NBA and WNBA, the NAACP, the Obama Foundation, the Congressional Black Caucus, and professional sports teams (including the Oakland A’s, the Atlanta Hawks, the Miami Dolphins, the Atlanta Falcons, and the Chicago Bulls). The British, New Zealand, Australian, German, Dutch, Italian, French, Egyptian, Turkish, Canadian, and other Olympic teams are supporting Arshay and the film profoundly, including creating new charitable organizations and initiatives with underserved communities. Universities and athletic directors across the United States (from Morehouse and other HBCU institutions to the University of Washington to Harvard, Yale, and Princeton) are all hosting events with Arshay. Arshay has spoken at UPS, Bank of America, Target, JP Morgan, Delta Airlines, Starbucks, Microsoft, and many other companies hosting conversations around the film, digging into access and opportunity, and the importance of bringing people together. The book was nominated for an NAACP Image Award and won the 2020 Nautilus Award. The film has won the 2021 Gracie Award, was nominated by the NAACP for an Image Award, was nominated by the Critics’ Choice Association for Best Sports Documentary, was nominated by the International Press Academy for Best Documentary, and was named one of the best films of 2020 by Esquire. People are consistently asking Ginny what she speaks about in her keynotes or her speeches. This episode uncovers what she talks about, the key takeaways and some helpful information around speaking in general, particularly around the term keynote. The term keynote is another word that's thrown around loosely by speakers and for a speech to be considered a keynote, it is typically the first presentation of a day, meeting or conference that sets the tone. There wouldn't be more than one keynote in a day's session. Interestingly enough, public speaking is often cited as the number 1 fear of people, even above death. The term for this is glossophobia. One medically reviewed study on verywellmind states that as much as 77% of the population has some level of anxiety around public speaking. Luckily Ginny does NOT have this, which is a great first step to being a keynote speaker. As far as what Ginny covers in her keynotes and speeches, there are a few key takeaways. One is around overcoming what's ours. We all face difficult times and have that one story that we may not think is big enough to manage through, but it's what we do with these stories and how we overcome them. Small stories can still lead to big trauma. Sometimes people believe that their situation isn't big enough to be considered trauma, adversity or a difficult time. But when things happen in your life and take up that space, it is big to you. Finally, Ginny aims to inspire and empower people to not sit along the sidelines of life and move on their own path forward to grow through adversity. While each keynote is customized to the client and the audience, this gives a good idea of what you can expect from her on stage. She also isn't someone who is just preparing on the flight. No, she comes prepared, practiced and ready to make an impact for the client and the audience. There is a ton of data out there that suggests how beneficial celebrating wins, successes, accomplishments and achievements are. Recently, Ginny's book,You're My Favorite, became a #1 best seller on Amazon, which was a huge accomplishment. Immediately, she reached out to two different friends to celebrate over the phone with. Are you celebrating your successes enough? It got Ginny thinking about other accomplishments, like reaching 100 book reviews on Amazon and 1,000 followers on Instagram, even getting a clean bill of health after a recent routine mammogram. No matter how big or small, it's important to celebrate our wins. There's a reason why patients ring a bell after completely a course of chemotherapy. It signifies and commemorates a success. Celebrating doesn't have to be an elaborate party. It could be dinner with some friends. Or coffee or happy with a friend. It could be publicly on social media or it could be treating yourself to some self care. Celebrating our successes is important and contagious. Contagious not just for ourselves, but it can grant others permission to celebrate their own accomplishments. This positivity puts us in a good mood and releases endorphins. And if you're a believer of manifestation, you will continue to bring this positivity and attract more wins. Using affirmations can reinforce and motivate you to win again. Saying "I am a winner" can make you more likely to keep winning. Writing down your achievements can also reinforce this and help of maintain an attitude of gratitude. If you have been in an abusive or toxic relationship, whether romantic, familiar or parental, this may be more difficult for you to do if you haven't felt allowed to celebrate your successes. You may want an accountability partner or to seek therapy for help with this. Making celebrations part of your routine can become a healthy and positive habit. You may even keep a tracker or journal of all of your wins and revisit if you're having a moment of doubt or a down day. This may be able to help boost you back up when you take a look at all of the things you've been able to accomplish. It's no fun to be around negativity, but it is fun to be around positivity and celebrate one another. It just feels good and can lead to more success. Let's celebrate together! Feel free to send Ginny a note about one of your successes, wins, accomplishment or achievements to celebrate you!

This episode was inspired by Jason Matheson from "The Jason Show" asking Ginny during her guest appearance, if there was ever a time during the relationship with Chad if her spidey-senses kicked in. The answer is ABSOLUTELY! There were clear signs, situations and indicators that something was wrong. Sometimes people want something to work out so badly that they may ignore these signs...intuition, hunches, gut feelings, or call them what you will. Do you believe in intuition? Do you trust your intuition? While Ginny never envisioned or necessarily desired having a family unit like this, she loved having this family of 4. We might ignore red flags because we're too far into a relationship, job, or certain situation and we feel like we've invested too much. Ginny talks openly about how her hands get tingly when she has a strong, intuitive feeling about something. Do you have an intuitive sensation? There's also a distinct difference between intuition, instinct and logic. Intuition is a based and formed around experiences. Instinct is more hardwired and less flexible, like a primal or fight or flight reaction. Instinct is innate. For example, if you hear a lion roar behind you, you will likely run for the hills. And logic is more logical and rational. You may use processes or spreadsheets to make decisions. They use the example of doing your taxes in the Positive Psychology article. You probably wouldn't lean on your intuition to determine how much you owe in taxes. The scientists outline that there is still a lot unknown about intuition, and it's somewhat challenging to define, but that it is still important. They reference several books in the article, including Malcolm Gladwell's book, "Blink". There is even a YouTube video linked in the article that you can watch on intuition. Decision making is likely to be a combination of intuitive and rational analysis. Have you ever had an intuition, a gut feeling, a hunch that you ignored and it turned out to be right? Send a message and share your story.

It's tea time! There have been so many new new things transpiring around "Chad" lately and it was time to bring you into the fold and get you up to speed. These are the conversations that have been happening over coffee & happy hour lately, so all of Ginny's friends & community needed to be in the loop. Here's what's been happening: A couple of months ago, a photo of the real "Chad" was posted in a secret facebook group with over 33k members. First of all, who's "Chad?" "Chad" is Ginny's ex-boyfriend that inspired her book, "You're My Favorite." He and his 2 children lived with her at the time that the relationship came to a shocking & traumatic end after learning that he wasn't who he portrayed at all. The lies, deception and betrayal were outrageous. Back to the Facebook group: The purpose of this group is to be able to gather information, tea or become aware of any red flags. When this photo of "Chad" was posted, there were almost immediately 100 comments from women that had been conned, bamboozled, & duped by Chad. Victims that he had gaslit or lied to, as well. These women started messaging one another and even reaching out to contact Ginny. Some women have been saved from going out with him because of the comments & messages. Women have been sending Ginny photos & screenshots with documentation of fake designer gifts he'd given them, class 2 & 3 drugs on his countertop that they admittedly did with him. (Although "Chad" vehemently denies his drug use.) One woman provided documentation that she was also with him on October 11, 2018, just earlier in the day, when he was with another woman that night. This happened while Ginny was traveling for work, while "Chad" was living in her house, just days after they got back from Ginny taking "Chad" on a very luxurious 10-day vacation to Italy. Women have sent messages thanking Ginny because her book was the only thing that helped them say "no" to him. Several women that knew him back from high school have reached out. These women are finally getting validation that they aren't alone in being manipulated by this guy. This has been creating connection & community amongst them and can help remove or reduce any guilt, stigma or shame from going through this experience. It can really mess with you when you find out that someone is not who you thought they were. Because of this newfound community with these countless women that have also been victims of "Chad," Ginny was recommended for another podcast, "The Twisted Sisters Podcast." One of the reels they posted on Facebook of Ginny's interview currently has over 160k views! Ginny will also be appearing on "The Jason Show" to share more of the juicy details around the latest events.

Ginny sits down with board-certified dermatologist & friend, Dr. Mohiba Tareen. In the fall of 2018, Ginny needed Dr. Tareen's help. She had a huge lump growing rapidly above her right eye and her face and eye were swelling terribly. She was concerned. Dr. Tareen was also concerned and was able to see her rather quickly. Upon entering the room, Dr. Tareen diagnosed Ginny with singles...on her face. This seemed unusual since she was only in her 30's, but Dr. Tareen asked right away, "Have you been under a lot of stress?" That's what sparked this episode and the important dialogue around the topic of how stress manifests in our hair, skin & nails. Who better to have this conversation with than an expert?! Ginny wondered if our bodies sometimes know we're under stress before our minds can catch up. Dr. Tareen unpacks how stress can impact the skin with things like shingles, acne, eczema, psoriasis, precancerous lesions...or even melanoma. Ginny also experienced significant hair loss & breakage during this time, as identified by her hair stylist. Dr. Tareen let us know that this is very common, especially in women. She breaks down the 3 different phases of hair growth and how they play a part: telogen, anagen & catagen. Dr. Tareen didn't just talk about the issues, but also provided solutions to all of these issues. In nails, you may also experience breakage and Dr. Tareen shared that picking cuticles & skin is also common when people are under stress. And of course, it wouldn't be a complete conversation with a board-certified dermatologist if we didn't talk prevention (your skin is your largest organ!) and sun protection. Dr. Tareen unpacked the best sunscreens and that you need to protect your skin from both UVA (aging) and UVA (burning) rays and the best way to do this is with a physical block, like a zinc. Get your skin checks, take vitamin D, wear sun protection, & invest in a hat.

Dr. Mohiba Tareen Bio:

Dr. Mohiba Tareen is a highly-regarded board-certified dermatologist. She is the Founder and Medical Director of Tareen Dermatology. Since its establishment in 2011, Tareen Dermatology has grown to five locations - Roseville, Faribault, Maplewood, Monticello, MN, with its newest location in Hudson, WI.
Dr. Tareen is a magna cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan, where she was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honor society. She earned her medical degree at the University of Michigan and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. She was awarded two prestigious scholarships in medical school: The Glasgow-Rubin Award to the top 5 female graduates and the MAPI award for the number one academic student of Indian descent.
Dr. Tareen completed her dermatology residency at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York, New York. This episode is all about real confidence. How do you define confidence? Ginny explores some ideas of what it is and what it isn't. Is this something that impacts women more than men? In this world of social media, it seems as though some may have started valuing themselves based on things like how many followers they have on Instagram or TikTok or how many likes they get on their stories, posts, reels, or YouTube shorts. Confidence isn't about seeking external validation. Someone who exudes confidence is Dolly Parton and she's quoted saying in an @Oprahdaily article that when you are comfortable with yourself, the right people are drawn to you. Here at Drinking With Gin, we're going to put our own little twist on it and at that when you have confidence and are comfortable with yourself, the right people are drawn to you. Confidence is being able to walk into a room and not compare yourself to anyone else. It's not judging others, which can be oh so hard to do. It's accepting accountability, responsibility and taking ownership. Confidence is being able to admit your weaknesses and shout someone else's name that might be a better fit for something than you are, especially when they're not even in the room. Being famous on social media is a little bit like being rich at Monopoly or landing that big job in the game of Life. Real confidence is about how much you genuinely like yourself. That's the real rich.

Send in your questions or thoughts on confidence!

Unpacking some potential red flags in romantic relationships or romantic interests. Ginny speaks much from her own experience in real life with "Chad." A common theme is that we need to trust ourselves and what feels right, or doesn't feel right, for us. If something seems nonsensical, it probably doesn't make sense. And no one is going to know what's right (or wrong) for you, better than you! Some of the things outlined here: Are they shady with their phone or constantly on it but doing "nothing" on it or talking to "no one?" Do they have weird notification settings on their phone, get a new phone number often, or use several different apps to communicate with different people? Pay attention to how they treat you in public vs private. Are your timelines aligned as to how quickly or slowly things are moving in the relationship? Is it too fast or too slow? Do they have long-standing friendships or other close relationships in their life? If not, this could be an indicator as to their ability to maintain relationships in general. Or if they've always been wronged and have a revolving door of friends in their life, this could be a big red flag. Lying, especially pathological lying can be detrimental to a romantic relationship or any type of relationship. Gaslighting, manipulation, jealousy, or constant criticism could be red flags as well. Inconsistency: How do they treat you in public vs private? Do they even take you in public? Do certain things just not add up, like their finances? Love bombing: are they over the top with showering & showering you with gifts, notes, cards, flowers, fancy dinners, concerts, sporting events & putting you on a pedestal? Open communication should be key. If they dodge difficult conversations and are secretive or don't support the exciting things you have going on or support the relationship, these could be red flags. And if they are having to sell you on how great they are...Ginny says to run the other way! No one should have to sell you on how good of a friend, person, boyfriend, girlfriend, etc they are. People will show you who they are. See that.

Jim Rendon is here to talk about his book, Upside: The New Science of Post-Traumatic Growth, where he interviews men & women from all over the world about their experiences with trauma and post traumatic growth. Growing up with a trauma survivor, his dad, who lived through The Holocaust, Jim was intrigued to uncover more about what happens when people experience post traumatic stress disorder, post traumatic symptoms and post traumatic growth. He worked with psychologists and experts to better understand the science and clinical perspective in depth.

This conversation sheds light on the idea that growth or growing is not linear & trauma is subjective. One story highlighted might really surprise you and the importance of keeping in mind that everyone's experience of what might be a seismic event may vary. And ultimately, the idea and ability for people to grow after trauma is more available and common than we might think. Jim puts it well when he says that the people who experience this type of growing and growth where they find new meaning and purpose in life have a mindset of thinking about the possibilities.

Jim Rendon is a Washington DC-based writer who covers nonprofits, science, design, the environment and plenty of other topics. He's gone cage diving with great white sharks, toured remote, ridge-top marijuana grows, visited maximum security prisons and mental institutions in pursuit of a story. His work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine and newspaper, Time, the Wall Street Journal, Mother Jones, Marie Claire, Fortune, Men's Journal, Outside, SmartMoney and other publications. His second book, Upside: The New Science of Post-Traumatic Growth was published in 2015.

You requested, so here it is! After an Instagram poll, many of you voted and wanted to hear about friendship red flags and romantic relationship red flags. But friendship red flags squeaked by with the win to go first. So, this episode covers several red flags or potential red flags where a friendship may be toxic or just may no longer be healthy for you. One of the key indicators is to pay attention to how you feel after interactions or conversation with this person. It goes back to your emotional bank account and noticing if people are energy takers or energy givers. Do you feel fulfilled or exhausted? Do you cringe or feel dread or just that you don't have the emotional capacity to answer when you see their name pop up on your phone? These could be red flags or signs that this person isn't healthy for you. Do they ignore your boundaries, even after you've expressed them? Really pay attention to these things if they become patterns of destructive behavior. Does this person constantly gossip and trash talk negatively other friends in their life? If so, they're doing it to you, too! You are not immune to this. If they are sharing other people's personal and confidential information with you, they're sharing yours with others. If your friend only shows up for you when you're struggling or your life is in shambles, this could be a problem. Your friends will want to support your endeavors and ambitions and your successes and celebrate with you along the way. Are they jealous or do they criticize you all the time? Do they use sarcasm as a mean way to cut you down, but then say just kidding? Again, looking for patterns of these behaviors could be useful. Are you all of a sudden their best friend in the whole world even though you hardly know one another? Best friend status should take some time to establish to really get to know and trust one another. Narcissistic behaviors, like love bombing, can happen in friendships, too. It's not exclusive to romantic relationships. And maybe one of the biggest red flags is if they don't really have any other friendships, especially long standing friendships. The definition of this may vary based on age, but if they constantly have a new best friend, but then they cut them out of their life because they've always been wronged...this could be a big red flag! At some point, what is the common denominator? People should be able to maintain healthy relationships and friendships for extended periods of time if they have healthy boundaries. If you've experienced any of these or other red flags or toxic friendship behaviors not discussed here, please share them!

In this episode, Ginny shares 3 of the biggest lessons she's learned and solidified in the last year. This timeframe specifically because after publishing her book, "You're My Favorite," these 3 areas really seemed to be highlighted. The first one is that vulnerability is strength. Ginny used to be tough, but found strength in vulnerability. The 2nd one is discovering that there is a path forward. In discovering this, she then went on to develop a coaching program around the model she used to catapult herself forward from a difficult time. Last, but not least, the importance of community is highlighted. Community starts with learning about, understanding and loving yourself so that you can understand the importance of the community around you. In some cases, you may decide that you need to make some modifications for yourself in your community. Ginny Grey Rocked a friend out of her life and did disconnect with a few family members. This allowed for even stronger connections and relationships to be built. Sometimes growing requires new people, new locations and new experiences. Embrace the new.

Oops...there are a couple of swear words in this episode! Nothing crazy or vulgar...in fact the couple swear words are kind of cute, but wanted to give you a heads up.

TW: sexual assault and rape are briefly mentioned in this episode. Nothing specific or detailed is discussed, but if you are not in a place at this time to hear those terms, you may want to come back another time.

This conversation is everything! Post traumatic growth and growing through adversity are the cornerstones of what Ginny's speaking, writing, podcast and coaching is all about. Lisa's experience and expertise is coupled with her compassionate and wonderful demeanor for a supportive and meaningful conversation on how people that have faced trauma and adversity can find the light at the end of the tunnel. The passion and connection in the conversation comes through. Normalization and validation are common themes throughout as well as noting that the pain & suffering can co-exist with the growing. This episode is powerful!

Lisa is a recognized expert in the strengths-based, de-pathologized treatment of trauma and has been in private practice for over 39 years. She presents workshops and keynote addresses nationally and internationally, and is a clinical consultant to practitioners and mental health agencies in the United States, Canada, the UK and Ireland. She has been an Adjunct Faculty member at several Universities, and is the Founder of “The Ferentz Institute,” now in its sixteenth year of providing continuing education to mental health professionals and graduating several thousand clinicians from her two Certificate Programs in Advanced Trauma Treatment. In 2009 she was voted the “Social Worker of Year” by the Maryland Society for Clinical Social Work. Lisa is the author of “Treating Self-Destructive Behaviors in Traumatized Clients: A Clinician’s Guide,” now in its second edition, “Letting Go of Self-Destructive Behaviors: A Workbook of Hope and Healing,” and “Finding Your Ruby Slippers: Transformative Life Lessons From the Therapist’s Couch.” Lisa also hosted a weekly radio talk show, writes blogs and articles for websites on trauma, attachment, self-destructive behaviors, and self-care, teaches on many webinars, and is a contributor to Psychologytoday.com. This episode may just be the most raw and vulnerable yet. Ginny share's her hardest breakup, and it's not who you think. This is a conversation that's been a long time coming, but needed to be navigated delicately. In an effort to be respectful and also honest and open, Ginny opens up about not having a relationship with her mom. Some people may have a hard time understanding this, but try to come with an open mind. When people have experienced trauma, emotional abuse or have a toxic relationship with someone, sometime's this may be the only option, even if it's their absolute last choice. There can be stigma, shame and judgment around making a decision like this, but it may also provide some validation for people that have been faced with a similar choice. If you related to this or know someone that needs to hear this, screenshot this episode and share it on your social media. Tag @ginnypriem in it!

This episode explores titles and the weight we put on them, either professionally or personally. This leads directly into the Social Comparison Theory, which was discovered in 1954 by psychologist Leon Festinger. Can you imagine what he would be thinking with all of the comparing via social media now?! Ginny talks about upward & downward comparison and the benefits & dangers of comparing. And of course, there's a reference on comparing as it relates to narcissism. Theodore Roosevelt called comparison "the thief of joy." Do you find meaning in your title(s)? Is your joy being stolen from comparison? There are some helpful reminders in this episode to keep us on track with what really matters.

TW: There are some words mentioned in this episode that may be difficult to hear, depending on where you are at on your path. While none of these topics are discussed in detail, they are mentioned. This is a safe space and if you don't want to be caught off guard, here are the time stamps in case you want to do a quick skip at those parts: 5:49, 12:15, 13:54, 31:37.

Joe Navarro is here himself! Do you love true crime? Are you here for the story sharing or growing through our experiences and using them for good? Well this is the best of both worlds! Think of Joe like the godfather of true crime. Not only does he have experience working with the villains, he uses this experience to help victims and to save lives. He's a former FBI agent and has authored 14 books, including Dangerous Personalities. This is a book that Ginny speaks of frequently as it was extremely impactful in her journey. Joe talks about why he wrote this book and why it's so important. Having worked with and studying some of the ultimate dangerous personalities over the years, he found it was the stories of the victims that followed him home. This book serves as a resource to better understand if you or someone you know is being impacted, or even tormented, by a dangerous personality. It can also provide tremendous validation for those that have had or are having interactions with these types of people.
