Be careful of vendors that want to work with you that know nothing of their medium. This recently happened to one of my clients. The franchise owner was pushing a company that had no experience in their field - it was obvious. So now their credibility with us has gone down. We avoided aligning ourselves with someone who was going to most likely farm out our work to foreign entities all while telling us they were doing the work. Nope! Check out these businesses. Poor writing, typos, wandering subject matter - these are the signs. Stay away! More marketing tips from Jan Rossi again soon. Happy New Year! Hope it's the best for your company.

This is a great tip to help our retail area maintain great flow and assistance to customers if your employees are busy with others or as a quick point of purchase option. Move things around in your store. Help your customers by curating small bins with "Store Favorites under $20" or "Great finds from $21 - $35" - great a gift for your favorite neighbor with a pet! People have limited time .Help them find something fast.

Without the online customer service assistance using Google Ads is more difficult than you think. They shut you down for no reason. It's like "if you can survive all our shenanigans for blocking your ad run, I guess we'll let you run some ads" - well, that's what runs through my head. Have Advil and loads of patience handy. Don't be discouraged though, Google Ads and Facebook, Instagram ads are great for your business. Just watch the budgets and if things are not running well, turn it off and start over! Good luck - but don't be scared to use these great marketing tools. The link goes to my ACAST channel as my website is temporarily down for some big changes. Post in advance of events, days off, special things going on - give your audience time to fit you into their busy schedule. Everyone as their errand runs mapped out - just get in their schedule with advance notice. Don’t post - you are closing early - no need. Especially when  you only have 34 followers and they are not regulars - . BUT in that case I would change my voice email greeting if you have a special phone number for the business. AND I would change my hours open to reflect your shorter hours on Google Maps. There is nothing more frustrating than seeing a store is OPEN on their google profile and then when you go there they are closed!  Make sure to change your hours back the next day.

All this is just good communications practices between you and your fans. The businesses that communicate the best - get more sales because people can feel comfortable your information is correct. Beat out the competition by just keeping your information updated!

What a concept.

When customers want to buy from your business it's important to keep up on your prices. No longer can you state "it's supply chain issues" it just rings hollow. When you show them a lower number and charge a higher number that is very deceptive. Would you go back? I don't think so. Don't leave customers thinking you charge whatever you want. With employees coming in and out of jobs your address is more important than ever! A delivery person needs to know your UNIT No. on all delivery invoices. Many stores with the same address? Make sure that unit no. is on there or valuable inventory will be marked as "delivered" to a wrong address and it will be your fault! Go back and re-address all those decisions you made when you first opened up. Are they all correct? Try to stay away from unusually gigantic letter in your over images. Images are meant for mostly images and a logo or two, but if you are filling up your cover photos with all words - it does not look good. You are trying too hard. Add more benefits and small tag lines and great photographic shots of your goods and services. Large logos scream desperation and an uncreative mind. AND the largeness of those image letters is too far from the words I am reading in your posts - it's a visual disconnect. Don't do it. Bring in a marketing person to help or a graphic designer. Don't try to do everything yourself! More from Jan Rossi of Marketing Residency tomorrow.

The reason a pet store did not make on of the top three positions in Google Business Profile is because there were 2 fake listings taking up space as they used the PetSmart address. No descriptions, no reviews - just a brand with items at PetSmart and they made up fictitious businesses and used the PetSmart address. Nope. Nope. Nope. You are a brand with products IN the store. By clearing these two fake listings away - a local pet store finally gets position number 3 in the Tri-Pack with Google business Profile! Soon it will be position 1! A ha! I was listening to my podcast yesterday about cautioning you to post link after link after link back to your website and I realived there is a missing piece to this scenario.

When business owners want you to simply just route everything to a blog post - again, everything - it strips away the power of having a very graphic solid image meme that will bring people into your message - this is normally what we do on social media. Just posting an image they purchased from Shutterfly and a link to learn more is really a problem now in 2021.

Why? What is the problem?

Hey - here's the full text of this one!

Each time you pop into your Google Analytics account you should have at least one “ah ha” moment.

What I mean is that you notice that an article you wrote 4 months ago has gained way more traction – and you notice all this traffic came from another link – someone recommended your blog and it is being discovered.

NOW what do you do?

You edit that post and put in things that will drive that traffic to other pages that you have.

You add a thorough biography of the writer at the end and include links to other articles that person has written on your website – maybe they like the author.

You add other links within the first two paragraphs that showcase similar products an or accessories to the product being mentioned in the article.

In other words – you BEEF IT UP a TAD.

The power of Google Analytics is (1) knowing where the action and traffic is occurring and then (2) doing something about it to maximize your ability to connect with a fan and have them buy your items or join a newsletter – gaining their email address.

All the notices of tools really just overwhelms people. Learn how to make things happen by following me – Jan Rossi of Marketing Residency. Learn and grow with marketing tactics easy to understand. Bye for now – more tomorrow

Welcome Marketing Residency listeners – this is Jan Rossi. Today I’m sharing 2 things that started as a casual suggestion to a teacher I know – I just spoke with her over the phone as she completed her first full week of online teaching sessions and she was excited –but exhausted.

She helps guide the students through their day and actually has assisted other teachers as they present something to her students – she acts as the assistant sharing slides on the zoom call to help out – and of course she is taking attendance to make sure the students actually went to the music teachers online portal and checked I – she’s no dummy – you must show up kids! All is good though.

So let’s talk about those tips.

In Part I of my “Preparing for the New Retail business Normal” miniseries here I gave you some ideas for restaurant changes when you re-open your restaurant.

Now let’s say you are a hair salon and you have been forbidden to cut hair for the last 2 months…. Hmm seems like you might have a crazy time scheduling all the demand for cuts, colors, highlights, etc.

What are some ways you can satisfy the maximum number of your clients?

Consider some sort of urgency scale. On a scale of 1 meaning – not crazy important to get hair done and then 2 – sort of important and 3 – urgent – must have hair perfect for a companywide presentation online or a special meeting. ASK your clients to give you their urgency and then schedule accordingly.

Your salon might have to take itself OFF the online scheduling system in order to do it this way. And that’s not a bad thing – to talk with your client over the phone and begin to set up your schedule for – lets say May 20th or so.

ALSO – People going back to work will need more available times from you outside of the normal 8 – 5.

Consider making Tuesday and Wednesday your evening hour’s schedule – so you work from 2 – 9 pm or so.

Accommodating your clients to meet their needs is a sure way to keep them coming back to you and not seeking services from other stylists.

Listen in to the rest of Part II of the New Retail Business Normal with this feature on Hair Salons. Tommorrow we will discuss what to do with all this great new innovative business tasks and how to promote them.... ahh ha!

Jan Rossi - have a great week everyone - keep thinking of how you will fix your business to lessen your customer's fears about virus related things when you re-open. Being prepared is KEY!

As a retail business owner you are probably excited about opening up to the public again. But this time – when you open your doors – you have a new responsibility – to protect your staff and customers from spreading a virus – any virus.

This means not just good personal hygiene but excellent personal hygiene. If you think of a way to set yourself apart from other businesses this might be an area that shows you are concerned and have a plan to minimize exposure.

What are some ideas to accomplish this goal? Here is a restaurant idea: (continue to listen to this smart restaurant idea)

This is Part I - I will discuss a different reatiul business model tomorrow. Stay tuned! Jan Rossi - Marketing Residency.

Not all advice is good advice. A big marketing expert is telling folks everyone should have a 10 year marketing plan. I would disagree. Too much changes - fast. Look where you are right now - working at home. Trying to adapt to keep yourself employed, working to bridge the gap between your goods and services and the people that want to buy them. The need for online is skyrocketing. Nobody can find cameras for all the zoom meetings happening - and the resolutions are declining in the hopes of bringing on board folks with lesser bandwidth. These are things you can't plan for, so you must adapt. Announcing you have plans for 10 years ahead is a bit odd and will allow your competitors to jump in to a market and innovate you out of sales. Keywords are super important for Google to know what your page is all about. Some folks think that is "old school" that Google doesn't need all these words to figure it out. Give your custoers information about your business in all the ways possible. This tactic includes changing your voice mail message weekly. It is no longer neceesary to tell people your open and close hours. Just give them your Google My Business page name to look that up.

No need to use your voice mail for too much information that can already be found through Google Maps. Use the opportunity of them calling to tell them something interesting. If they want to go right to leaving you a message tell your callers this information upfront and tell them to hit the pound # key to leave a message to you to bypass the greeting.

When your customers time is considered - they appreciate it!

Plus you can give them new information weekly!

Wishing you a very prosperous New Year!

Successful store owners use multiple categories in Google My Business so that they show up in many search results, not just one. The word "STORE" does not help you at all! People do not search for a store - that's a given. They want to search on Jewelry store, Vintage clothing store and more. Show up in those search results - all of them!

During uploads of images to your website or social media areas, it’s important to pre-prep your photos and title them, add a description, tag words etc. Don't have your images indexed as CanonCs3X57384. Search Engine Optimization tactics with images is very important. Change the properties of your photos by right clicking (if you are on a PC) and scrolling down to properties and fill everything out that is important. It's important to be geotagging images for location info.

This episode has huge demand, so I thought an updated session was a good idea. Enjoy geotagging!

Upskilling is now a corporate priority for companies that want to grow fast with a skilled employee base.

And you can do it to with your small retail business.

Invest in training.

Making the time to take these classes is important - your increase in knowledge can mean a $25,000 spring sales record or another flat $5,000 sales quarter if you just do the same things you did last year.

Which do your prefer?

Grow your biz - take classes!

When you're reskilling employees, you're replacing outdated skills with new skills to meet the changing needs of the market.

And as Google My Business has introduced significant changes this year my first online course will be on this subject. A Google My Business Primer Course is coming in mid December. I’ll announce it again soon. You don’t want to miss it!

A person needs to know you, your reputation, and your product or service before they are willing to buy. Building visibility, trust and a positive reputation takes time with a series of memorable contacts.

Those contacts can be from light exposure with a social media ad, it can be a special press release in your local newspaper, it can also be small reminders you place in the person’s email area or the actual shopping bag notice thanking them for the sale and reminding them of a fun event coming up for your business.

Rest assured that repeating your message is key. That rule of 7 is important. Many people will not even know they have seen your message 7 times. When asked by a local store owner how they heard about an in store sales event most people said the glossy vista printed postcard they saw in the store prompted them to come in. But in reality - it was a number of social media outreaches, paid ads and both instagram stories and fb stories that were SHARED with others - that had them see the message over 7 times and there they are in your business. When they tell you - oh this card here told me - that is not accurate.

No one likes to be manipulated. Most people will not tell you that an advertisement influenced them to come in - they will tell you they just drove by or a friend told me. Not really…...

Understand it is everything - it’s a process ……. Smart marketers do everything!

Enjoy the long weekend! Don't forge to listen to one of those Alexa playlists I mentioned. Try asking Alexa to "play the playlist Christmas Past" and it will get you in the mood for that holiday decorating you might be taking part in this weekend.

Today here is Colorado it’s a snow day and it’s also a few days before Thanksgiving.

The bottom line is that people have the day off. They have idle time. What are people doing?

Many folks catch up on things, some people feel obligated to check those work emails and still do a bit of work form home...but in general I’ll tell you what is happening….

Folks are scrolling on social media and business websites looking for gift ideas and for fun things to do when family arrives from out of town.

My question to you - the smart marketer - are you posting? Are you showing up with great ideas and recipes and funny things about the snowday? The businesses that engage with what is happening in our lives - being snowed in - these are the companies that get our attention.

If you are in retail - you’ve got to be in front of your customers and remind them to shop local - shop with you - how you do that is by being indispensable to them. Selling kitchen items? Show us some great soup preparation and tips with a FB live demonstration.

Selling CBD oils? Well - who’s snow shoveling and might need some wonderful cbd oil for their aches and pains after shoveling? Be the solution to the problems.

Just be in their feed as people stuck at home have more time to be online. They should be connected to you and your business so when the time comes to buy - you get the sale.

Listen to the entire episode and make your next snow day be a great marketing opportunity!Have a wonderful Thanksgiving -

Getting ahead in business is often the result of knowing information first - before anyone else gets knowledge of a platform upgrade, new keywords and in todays topic of new categories in google my business.

I have it in my planner to check to see what new categories are being added to Google My Business on a monthly basis. But I have to go to each account I manage and one by one check to see if a better - more direct keyword has been added that will help my client be the one and only result if someone searched on it. Not a bad strategy right? You’ve got to stay on top of things.

Well, today I discovered a new site called Pleper tools and the website is simply p l e p e r dot com.

It will give you the lates and greatest list of new categories google is adding to their platform within a 3 day timeperiod.

What you do is head over to pleper.com then press the button to go fetch the most updated list.

Got it so far?

Now here's something to consider. A book about saving the salmon population is being touted as a new business management tool.

The book is entitled "Stronghold: One Man's Quest to Save the World's Wild Salmon." and its written by Tucker Malarkey and the fact that this article never mentions that the book is written by Tucker and it focuses on the work her cousin, Guidi Rahr has completed is a bit odd. But I am giving her credit here as Business Insider did not mention the actual author….. Come on business publications - keep up!

Getting back to our story today

For threatened salmon habitats, the researcher adopted a strategy of saving and fortifying what was still right and intact in the salmon environments, reasoning that the costs of preservation were far lower (and the odds of success far higher) than trying to repair what was already lost. That strategy has since led to his life's mission of working to preserve the salmon-rich river systems of the American northwest

With a business mindset its the tactic of preserving the strength in your existing markets and keep them growing instead of trying to fix broken areas that take too much time and money to fix.

Listen for more!

Also - I will add this as a post to my website blog at JanRossi.com

Here is the link to the Business Insider Story: https://www.businessinsider.com/ceo-surprising-business-lesson-learned-from-salmon-stronghold-strategy-2019-11

What phone number is listed on your website? your Facebook page? Your Google My Business Account? They should match. Google pays attentio to anomolies like different phone numbers. It could affect your ranking of the website and other social platforms. If you are working with a national marketing chain they most likely will want to change your phone number so they can "keep track of" who is calling in. This is an old data point. You don't have to do this anymore, but it does help when the marketing firm is trying to convince you to sign up for another 6 months at $2,000 a month. They just spit back your phone call data as proof of something that is a result of their work, yet all they did was literally change your own phone number. Don't get caught up in this power play.

Smart marketers going into the holiday season know there is a short window from interest to hitting that buy button. You’ve got to use a bit more ad repetitions and tell stories in these short ads so your potential customers are eager to hear more from your brand. Then they feel comfortable and buy.

Ads should be simple and all social channels to send folks to mobile friendly pages with new offers to encourage people to complete the check out process.

They can take over your calendar! And it might appear that you agreed to attend an event you really did not – and you might give out your cc information thinking you are attending a fake event. Be aware this is a real scam happening now.

Making duplicate accounts is a tactic with some large marketing businesses who want to take control. They make another account, marke yours as duplicate and you loose all your history! Watch out for this bad tactic. It's a lazy way for them to gain control over your listing.

It's time to reset your social media pages after the big Labor Day sales and make sure that new people that arrive to your pages do not know they missed out on a big sale. It might stop them from buying - "I'll wait till the next sale" type of mentality.

I worked on a big acount for a few years and everyone knew when the sales came so it was completely dead leading up to those sales times. If you train folks for sales, they wait for them.

So again, take off any mention of sales after they have expired.

And a tiny comment about blocking stories from an account....why you might want to do it.

If you handle logistics with your company you know that one false move can tank an order – and it is usually shipping. If you set everyone’s expectations correctly – there are way less problems.

Give adequate lead times for shipping, provide actual phone numbers where your customers can get a real person to talk to and sort things out – these are the simplest ways to build trust with your brand – listening to customers queries and solving problems.

Be the company that knows where things are and can fix logistics problems fast. Make it turn into a great feature of doing business with you over a competitor. Deliver on time. People will pay more for that satisfaction of knowing their item is on its way. Don’t give them more to do – let the responsibility rest on your logistics shipping team in tangent with customer service. I would use this as a great marketing edge.

Good luck with outfitting those dorm rooms!

In case you haven't noticed school has started for most people. I was talking to my sister this weekend (she's a 6th grade teacher) and she was telling me some of the exercises she had students do in sixth grade. They are just getting used to switching classes and there's lockers now they have to remember combinations you know all that new responsibility on kids comes with stress.

She had the kids do some quick exercises so they can start thinking for themselves - what do they want to accomplish this year? What makes them happy? What stresses them out? How do they deal with it?

I think we can all learn from this helpful routine weekly. Let's go back to elementary school and revisit. What is this quarter going to be like? What are we worried about? How do we handle that?

Great info - a reminder to be balanced and take care of ourselves. I especially applaud the teachers for helping these 6th graders develop into free thinking, smart, active young adults.

Best of luck with your tasks and your kids with new schools.

You've heard the famous line "Don't look back you're not going that way." right? Well people will always argue that you have to analyze your past data in order to know what is working in order to maximize the strategies that are spot on - crushing it with engagements (shares, comments) and this is a good thing.

What is not such a good thing is comparing your business with other competitors ALL THE TIME. For some reason there are businesses that will not venture out and try something new unless someone else does it first.

This is really too cautionary. Be bold. Innovate.

Listen in - maybe I've inspired you to go down a new creative path this morning. Good luck!

The same old tactics are just so tired and boring - be new - be fresh! That's why you like marketing right? Remember that!

Hello Marketing Residency listeners. Today – a short chat about using subdomains off your main domain. Google has noticed there is subdomain activity that has nothing to do with the main domain – it’s a work around people have used to piggy back good rankings from the main domain. Google is now telling you to literally “proceed at your own risk” [ warning sound ] in doing this because they don’t like these well ranked sites to lease out their subdomains to companies that have literally nothing to do with their brand.

Google also has hinted that it might possibly hurt your main domain ranking. Uh-oh! I hope you are not doing this!

Listen in to the entire segment.

Listen to Google's information here from Jan Rossi - I stay up on most website seo and other online matters as well as marketing. It's important to know that your efforts are working.

Creating cohesive charts, banners or whole infographics should be a skill in your marketing toolkit. If you aren’t great at graphics, find an app to help you with that - they are out there. Just brand it with your company colors and the “feel” of how you want the content to come across – light hearted and fun,, silly, serious, factual – it depends on your goal of course.

Adding infographics on Instagram is fun. They can be used in 3 or 4 sections and as Instagram loads – that vertical piece stays together – I love to see infographics on Instagram.

Interesting content that is visual stimulating is highly shareable. And you get your point across fast. Some serious topics are lightened up with these creative infographics. Think about adding one to your social media platforms today.

Are you listening to the buzz about Facebook's billian dollar fine? Rightly so. If you think it's "ok" for a company to take your private data and do something else entirely with it - other than use it for security checks - you missed the whole point of the reason for the damages.

We all have privacy pages on our own websites now telling our readers what we are doing with their email addresses and more. Facebook violated this trust on many occassions - AFTER they said it would be corrected.

Look at your history on Facebook - your total dollar amounts spent over the years. With no customer service - the ability to call in and fix problems and stop erroneous charges - why do we continue to support a format that ignores us as customers?

If you are creative, you can STILL USE FACEBOOK with great success, but you can keep most of your ad money.

There is a reason why content is being repeated on your social media platforms.

Customers are sometimes just learning about their needs and your posts and images tweak their interest in the beginning…. Then your information helps them make a good decision and when they see your information again and then maybe on another platform – it might be time for them to buy.

I see accounts just put up one post about something important. One tiny post.

Now – unless you are the all powerful OZ and know exactly when all your fans are looking at your feed – you will miss out on 90% of the people interested in your brand.

What to do ?

Repeat the information.

Don't let too much time go by without updating and brightening up your profile and cover images. A picture with no words, questions, domain name or other important information is a problem.

At a quick glance I should know who you are just by seeing the graphics!

Marketing strategies are good, but if you are sending people to your social media pages that are empty and not full of information - that's wasted money spent on advertising.

It doesn't take much. Pull writing from your website. Always end the profile and cover posts with links to send people to your website and get them off the social platform.

Be strategic - and get them to follow your page, your advice so you can continue to market to them later.

If you were to ask many marketing managers what talents they look for in hiring a new marketing intern it would not be tech skills, platform finesse, graphics adaptation or snappy comment comebacks – nope…. it would be storytelling.

A good storyteller with skills paints the visual, speaks the language correctly and strategically places your fans in the position to see your services or products as viable solutions to their problems.

Good old storytelling wins!

Could you describe something and tell a good story in an interview? Maybe sharpen that skill.

Even though live streaming and video is hot, those tech skills still need great copy – a good storytelling sequence that is concise, makes sense and talks with the right tone that resonates with fans.

Other skills are trainable, but a talent for writing must be a given with the applicant.

Listen to the entire Alexa mini-brief and get that missing link covered for your Marketing Department - but get that great copywriter in the mix first!

If you are in a position where there has been no pay increase in a while – stop it now by asking your boss for a raise – show them your innovative contributions to the firm, add your stats. Etc.

So it’s important to keep this information. Keep stats on your good work. Ask for more money….when your boss is in a good mood – you’ve increased the traffic to the website with your marketing efforts and more.

Why be shy? Be bold. Ask for that raise. Don’t joke about it. Be direct. Back up your statements and then be quiet….don’t keep talking….be silent after you ask.

I don’t care how uncomfortable the silence is do not speak again until they speak.

Whatever they say next determines if you (a) get the raise NOW not later. (b) stay or prepare to look around. Don’t be known as a tree hugger and stay at a company that does not value your efforts.

Business advice today.

Ask for a raise!

How do you get good at sales?

1) You know your products and services inside and out….all the support questions and answers…. You can talk to strangers easily…..

2) If you ROLE PLAY with your boss or another intern or marketing professional – this is very helpful. Do this every day until the big event.

3) Give out something memorable so that everyone remembers your brand.

4) Where are you sending folks? Website? Facebook? Insta? Just pick one spot if possible.

Also introduce yourselves to your fellow neighbors around you – offer up your water resources or anything else helpful so that everyone has fun and gets their message out.

Sales is just making connections – making people like and trust your brand. That’s most of it – answering all their questions and providing the best solution for their unique problem. That’s all.

I recorded a similar podcast in 2018 entitled "Tradeshows and the Marketing Intern" - take a listen to that podcast as well (7:10).

Tips about Facebook and more comments about having your business be more community minded.

remember my earlier mini-brief on being community minded? How’s it going with your outreach efforts? Some of this takes little to no money and has HUGE payoffs.

Do a 5K race sponsorship – get your brand name on those tshirts that get worn way after the event –

Be a business that cares.

Watching the Netflix series "The Chef Show" gives you more than great cooking insight. It gives you moments where people say some pretty cool things. Filmmaker Robert Rodriquez told us that at an early age he "Learned to learn" things. And that's why he writes, directs, has a band, is an amazing chef - and he is not boasting, he is stating a fact. Always having an interest to learn keeps you ahead of everyone.

Love it!

Let’s talk about NAMES today.

You have a brand name.

You have a website domain name.

You have names you use on social platforms that might be slightly different. What?

Yep – that’s what we are discussing today.

Sign in to Google My Business.

Open the location you want to create a short name for.

From the menu, click Info Add profile short name.

Pay attention to the marketplace. Change your pricing to account for increases or decreases and remember that too low a price may translate to lower sales as consumers feel your product is "too cheap." Perception is important.

A good reminder! Always review. Where are you with your pricing? Too high? Just right?

Marketing should not be an afterthought, however some businesses don’t take it into consideration when they are making big decisions for their business and – that’s a huge mistake.

Case in point – a thriving computer repair business moved their offices 10 blocks away from their present location to save on rent….. what they completely ignored was their customer base.

It's a tough lesson to learn after your business was doing so well!

You may see your business as just a normal business, but remember, to a fan or follower there is always a glimmer of intrigue about what happens behind the scenes. Why not Peel back the curtain just a little bit and they’ll feel much more connected to you as a brand.

Brands that connect on an emotional level receive 200 percent more word of mouth marketing from their customers.

New item in the shop? Tell us a story about how it was created – what problems is it solving?

Did your company get recognized in a major magazine as top items to pack for a round the world trip? Give us the link?

And how would you know about that article? Sometimes the author tells you or the magazine. And many times you know because you have GOOGLE ALERTS set up on your brand name and your product names so any time they are mentioned - you get notified.

Product Positioning is a topic in marketing that does not get enough attention. When you start a new company and develop your position in the marketplace it seems to be a sort of set spot that you tend to gravitate towards and you surround yourself with people uber focused on that niche.

Ask yourself.

How did we come up with that niche?

What value do we give to our customers – something they cannot find anywhere else.

What is our unique position?

Is it time for an excersise in your company to expand your reach with different positioning of your existing product?

Lots of great information was revealed from the Google Marketing Live session last week. I will try to quickly put it all together for you in 3 mini-briefs. Today it's all about Choice, Transparency and Control - 3 things consumers require. We cannot miss one of these steps. As marketers this is very important information. The new ad tools Google has announced all fit in this philosophy - we should do our part and keep the privacy of our customers in consideration at every turn.

Having privacy pages on all websites will be key to ranking factors based on this emphasis. Make sure you have that in place on your website right now.

I have been tasked with some training for a local business. The owner is focused on Facebook – but that’s now where the magic formula is for this business – it’s on good ol’ Craigslist. It’s a flurry of activity in her category and she doesn’t even know it.

I am looking forward to the presentation this afternoon. I’ve got some fun posting games, and it will just take a bit of effort and she would literally dominate the 4 categories on Craigslist with this strategy.

Try to put your product or service on the most targeted platform and strategize a winning method for posting and emphasizing your business. Get another phone number if you want to answer phone calls – or just use your regular phone number.

Are you positioning your brand for a great Mother's Day Gift solution? Got those hashtags figured out? Try these:

mothersdaygifts

mothersdaygiftideas

giftformom

momgifts

momgiftideas

giftsformom

You can jump into these pre sorted hashtags and add your copy and images with a nod to how mom would love your item… provide a DIRECT LINK TO BUY IT – don’t make them go somewhere to read a long blog post --- have great descriptions on your buy page – make check out easy. OFFER fast delivery.

Did you know an Instagram post with at least one hashtag averages 12.6% more engagement than a post with no hashtags?

If you are stuck in a social media bubble just aimlessly posting with no links to your products or service – why are you on there? Make it easy for folks to connect with you and buy your items.

Happy Mother's Day weekend - position your product as a great gift for Mom using hashtags for sorting and direct buy links. Get that shipping completely quickly too.

Even tiny changes can make a difference in your business being found over others. Google is now starting to index emoji’s

Want to have even MORE fun and potentially help your local SEO? Try adding relevant emojis to your Post. Google is beginning to index emoji-relevant search results. (In fact, you can now search Google by “tweeting” an emoji at it!) Additionally, people — especially younger people — are beginning to search (typically on their mobile devices) with emojis!

So if a person is searching for “[beer emoji] + nearby” and you own a local craft brewery and use the [beer emoji] somewhere on your Google My Business listing — like in a Post with a special offer  — you might have an SEO edge over the other craft breweries located in your city.

You want the images associated with your brand to be geotagged to your specific location, your latitude and longitude coordinates.

This is especially important when you have franchisees – that one stock image everyone is using is tagged most likely to the home office – not to your business.

Google will look at the authentic markers on your account including the geotagged image content information.

Businesses using pure stock photos with odd geotags will get dinged in their rankings.

So while it’s not super important anywhere else – but it’s a good practice to get into – geotag those photos. There are some online spots that will help you. One of them is photo-location.net It will help you solve this problem for images not geotagged.

It’s finally hip to be square on Facebook starting tomorrow whereas the Flexible image aspect ratio will be the default meaning you can leverage any aspect ratio with certain parameters. Anything taller or wider would have to be cropped. This means less cropping and an easy way to create ads.

Thank goodness. The square image default now on Facebook is just what we need!

The recommended crop key is now set at 100 x 100.

Initial testing saw that the square image link ads showed more improvement in click-through and conversion rates. So even though we had it for Instagram – it wasn’t as friendly on Facebook – but now it is!

It’s recommended that we move to square ads so tell your image creatives to move to the new format.

It will make sharing between Facebook and Instagram way easier. It’s finally hip to be square!

I’m going to add a bit more information about having video at your business. My last broadcast from this weekend mentioned the antique store where they are now going to be playing how-to videos in a playlist from Youtube that stream on the monitor near the check-out area. They had been playing the news and it was not relevant to their business.

Please always be doing things in your business that are relevant to your business.

When people visiting your company are waiting for a meeting, this is an opportunity to show off all the cool things happening and the awards won and more. Salespeople sitting in the waiting room are taking all this information in – and they rebroadcast the information to lots of folks.

So make some videos to use in house not just on social media channels. A company that that communicates well has their information put out into the universe faster.

Selling your services and products should be an experience.

If I had to listen to a breaking cnn news store as I was checking out, while shown a large video in front of me… I would NOT buy any point of purchase extra items, I would be grumpy and want to leave. It would be a terrible ending to my visit. (1:59)

Watch out with TVs in your business. People are trying to get away from them.

If you do have one – make it helpful with how to videos your customer might enjoy and they might say hold on a minute and run back to a booth to buy a crazy old child’s chair and then the lite blue chalk paint to paint it for their grandson – all because they were watching that how-to video on your wide screen tv and it looked so easy!

Success is in the details…. That’s the way it goes.

Lot's of time and effort develops marketing launches. Are you documenting the successful and the not-so-successful moves made durnig the launch? Gathering all the information gives you better insight for the next time. I suggest holding a meeting at your offices where people can grab information from their desks or use laptops and you also have the ability to write on large display boards. Seeing how your project played out with the various team members and the issues that might have slowed the team down might give you insight to fix these snags in the company so all future launches are improved.

This Marketing Residency mini-brief is just a quick thought about marketing management practices after an event. I always review to see how things could have been better. And when your staff gets promotions out of your department - you'll have a written document detailing their launch protocol ready to give to your next marketing intern or team member.

Best of luck with all your launches this year!

Marketing in 2019 means you’ve got to have great tech skills. Having a go-to person to advise you is good, but take the time to learn how to edit and upload videos in different ways. Some day that app you rely on will not be there – then what are you going to do with a deadline?

If visitors go to your website and see way out dated reviews they think (1) You are out of business. (2) Things are not going so great now, hence no recent reviews or (3) Changes in the company means things have gone down hill. - they just start thinking that "uh oh" stuff in their heads.

Impress your website visitors with recent reviews! Go back to Yelp, Google Reviews, Angie's List and other places and take screen shots if you must - or embed the reviews with a link. Some folks would rather you stay on their site so they screen shot them - that's what I used to do for clients. We would switch them out every 6 months or so to keep them fresh. Now your company might have their own review system. Unfortunately you can "feature" certain reviews tha come up first. In this case grab the most recent excellent review and change up the "featured" review. People notice these types of change ups on your site.

It's an important marketing clue to potential new customers that you can be trusted to provide the solution they seek. And oftentimes it allows folks to praise your customer service area, your packaging and your delivery timeliness. All this is great "good will" with your fans.

Time to update your reviews!

Watch out with over posting on every platform. If you are posting every hour or every 15 minutes it says to me that you are not listening to others. There is no engagement. I look at your feed and it's full of you pushing stuff out there. So here is what goes through my mind:

(1) You don't really know how to use social media.

(2) You don't listen to anyone - you just push information out into the fog.

(3) There are other reasons why you follow me - you just think I will aimlessly follow you back.

Back up there buttercup. If I followed you without vetting your feed I might block you or mute you. Most likely it's a block for me as you might just want to connect to harass my followers with DMs. Ah ha.... yes, folks do this sometimes.

So simply just post regularly, engage with others, answer questions - ask questions and be a good community member on whatever platform you are on.

This time of year there are lots of opportunities for businesses to contribute to local and national charities with, sponsorships, silent auction donations and contributions of time as well by allowing your employees to help out with community festivals or events. Think about taking part this year and have a small committee find an event happening that aligns with your company in some way. Allow your employees to help in groups to organize these events – usually the non-profits need help in so many ways.

So you can sponsor a run/walk charity event that puts your brand name on tshirts and posters so you get local exposure and maybe even mention on a broadcast radio and certainly social media. Like follow and engage with their page to show your support and enthusiasm.

Have a press release telling everyone about your commitment to this event and encourage everyone else to participate.

And don’t forget your local high schools looking for prom donations to help keep the students busy with after prom parties. They’d love donations of products to use for prizes and such.

Support a charity and grow your good will in the community.
