Welcome! This podcast is coming to you from North America. For many years I studied music basics and classical piano before graduating in 1992 from The King's College with a bachelor's degree in education. I performed in public for many years as a vocalist and entertainer/teacher on Lowrey organs, keyboards and acoustic guitar. These videos are meant to motivate players to perform in public. We got it right this time, friends, for buttery flaky pie crusts for chicken pot pie. I learned that working the dougball should be somewhere between wet and dry. It should be moist and "bouncy" neither wet nor dry. Watching this video takes me back to when my mother and her mother made noodles from scratch on Sundays in Ohio after church services. It's all about the love, isn't it, for mom's homecooked meals and grandma's hearty dishes (and raising chickens) that make lifetime memories? TIP NO. 1: slowly roll out the dough ball. TIP NO. 2. when there's no parchment paper in the pantry, try this. Foil wrap the bottom of a sauce pan lid for blind baking the dough. Playing this Yamaha demo song is in response to time with friends today playing volleyball and who own musical instruments and play. It's great for music students who want to up their game from C major music and all major keys to a minor keys. This song is "high energy" and tremendous for anyone ready and willing to jump in with both feet and hands. I'm standing while playing. Not reading sheet music. Take flight with this one. When you choose a song you know well, can hear it in your head whether or not you played it before on a piano or keyboard, the results could be spectacular and energize you like magic. Following the basic rules of "read the sheet music first and then play", what you hear in this video is what I played and recorded within about one hour. The sheet music in a songbook titled Christmas Songs by Hal Leonard got me started leading to memorization, a very good sign for musicians. Consider this method. Read the sheet music, play the melody and then choose chords you can identify quickly and begin to play. Success will be yours, maybe in one hour, one da or longer. This should not be a competition unless you dream of playing in Carnegie Hall. Finally, especially for beginners, daily practice improves sight reading, technique, self-confidence and musical memory. Music on the Porch day is an annual outdoors world-wide event for people of all ages who can play a musical instrument or SING. Recordings are submitted in advance on Facebook, other media sites and YouTube for approval. For this event, I play a children's song in C major with my Yamaha PSR-E463 on the front lawn.Twinkle Twinkle is one of the prerecorded songs that come with the Casio SA-76 and Yamaha keyboards that young children in my part of the world like and can sing along with at the drop of a hat. Learning to read music can be great fun for children as well as adults. Due to my work schedule as a former college student, practice time was limited to a few days a week. Whenever I sat down in a practice room at the college, I became LOST in time for 2-3 hours. While trying to get up from the hard bench after each session, I felt stabbing pain from a hernia after sitting in one position. I told myself I would learn to live with the pain even if it meant walking with a cane. No one in the music department knew why Darlene was in practice rooms for long hours esp. on weekends. Other music students who lived off campus practiced at home. I was also a commuter. I didn't own a piano. This was my secret.
Today, I own an upright piano, three Yamaha keyboards, one Casio SA-76, two accordions, one guitar, harmonicas, and a xylophone. Moderation concerning practice time for music students is the main idea in this video. When you are kind to your body it will be kind to you. Try to take breaks every 30 minutes. I do. These are songs you might play with Yamaha's Groove Creator. Videotape your playing so a video like this can be uploaded to your YouTube channel. It is a good way to see your actual progress over time. Please date the music lessons in a journal and plan ahead. Your next recital should be within six months, for example the July 4th holiday. Keep a song in your heart and mind. Ultimately, it should become part of your playlist preparing you to perform in public. Smiling not a major requirement. Your audience can tell by your playing if you are smiling inside and probably on cloud nine and the iCloud. Some may record you on a smartphone or digital camera. This is about sharing the love that comes with music. Keep playing as long as nobody throws tomatoes. It could happen. If ragtime piano can be seen as the starting point in the evolution of jazz piano, then the next step in that evolutionary process wasn't a step all; it was a "stride." Around 1920, the popularity of ragtime piano began to wane, as blues music became the new fad. In response to this — while also incorporating some of the influence of Tin Pan Alley — several pianists, primarily in Harlem, began to experiment with a blending of styles. What makes keyboard players happy? Being able to keep up with the rhythm for solo compositions and playing without sheet music. If you have struggled over the years with tempo settings, playing along with pre-recorded music should rapidly boost your rhythm skills. Adjust the tempo settings during practice. Make small increases along the way. In this video the tempo is increased slightly. The melody is based on the chord style from Yamaha and chords F, G, B flat and F in the key of F major. Musical styles are given different names for the Casio SA-76 and Kawasaki keyboards. Styles are called patterns for the Casio keyboard. Based on the owner's manual definition for the Yamaha E463, styles is a feature dealing with rhythm, bass and chords. Press the "styles" button on the Yamaha keyboard for a list of styles with numbers ranging from 001 to 235. Regarding the Kawasaki, there are rhythm style buttons only. No bass or chords. Just a whole lot of fun learning different instrument sounds with eight rhythm choices and a button for drums while playing or recording. There is a song book for the Casio SA-70 for nine pre-recorded songs. There are demo songs for the Kawasaki, but no song book (to the best of my knowledge). Thank you for watching.

Next, press the ACMP ON/OFF button to turn on the Auto Accompaniment (ACMP). Press the SYNC START button to turn on Synchro Start on. Play a chord (with one finger) to start playback. This sounds like music from a mariachi band. Sweet! The typical instruments of contemporary mariachi include the vihuela, a five-string guitar related to an instrument popular in the Spanish Renaissance; the guitarrón, a large, fretless six-string bass guitar; a standard six-string acoustic guitar; and violins and trumpets, which usually play the melody. Easy access to the keyboard will provide incentive to practice not just "walk on by" to do other things. Both old school students using sheet music and students with digital devices should be encouraged to increase practice time. Old school students should keep sheet music on the "music rest" that comes with the keyboard. Learn how to play standing up. Avoid hiding the sheet music from sight in a bench or a drawer. Increasing the keyboard's visibility should encourage you to "squeeze in some practice time". This portable keyboard should be able to be moved from room to room. Remember, variety is the spice of life. This could not apply more to music students dealing with rigid practice schedules and frequent requests to "play something!". How do you warm up? Do you have easy access to sheet music and a keyboard? A song in your head and heart will make finding them quickly a top priority. Even vocalists do warm-up exercises before launching into arias, popular music, jazz songs and musicals. Where there's a will, there's a way leading to mastery of your instrument. It may be owning more than one keyboard. Why did Beethoven write Ode to Joy? The “Ode to Joy” text that Ludwig Van Beethoven employed, and slightly modified, was written by the German poet, Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller, in the summer of 1785. It was a celebratory poem addressing the unity of all mankind.

For each of the three chords, look at the note(s) that appear in the right-hand melody Make a mental note. Practice playing these three chords. Then, play the song using both hands. "Ode to Joy" is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824. Beethoven's text is not based entirely on Schiller's poem, and it introduces a few new sections. Beethoven in this imposing work transcends the usual concept of this symphony as an abstract orchestral composition by adding a text (Schiller's “Ode to Joy”) with soloists, quartet, and chorus in the fourth movement. Ode to Joy is a song with a tempo of 144 BPM. It can also be used half-time at 72 BPM or double-time at 288 BPM. The track runs 2 minutes and 30 seconds long with an A key and a major mode. It's time to get down to business and get physical! Picture yourself standing at the keyboard. If you own a portable keyboard like the Yamaha PSR-E463 you can make this happen. Place the keyboard on top of a table against a wall. For added height place a computer monitor stand or a large sturdy box under the keyboard which is now positioned 40-50 inches from the floor. If you really want to push the envelope, put the keyboard in a well-trafficked room like the kitchen. Sheet music should be visible on the keyboard. Your single sit-down sessions will change dramatically to many mini sessions during the day. A new desire to practice emerges before or after you open the refrigerator door. The desire to consume food becomes a NEW DESIRE TO PLAY. There is also increased physical stamina. LET ME HEAR YOUR MUSIC TALK If some people are crying you'll know you've connected on a very personal level. Vocalists as well as song writers, solo instrumentalists, rock bands, and orchestras have this power. Music has the power to move people emotionally in all kinds of ways. Classical music concerts and recordings continue to connect with people. This broadcast is about musical expression. How long it takes is up to you and me when we practice multiple times during the day. Practice as long as you can stand throughout the day. It may take several weeks or even months to reach a comfort level playing while standing up.
Summertime means lawn parties, picnics and other outdoor events for musicians. If you are able to play a musical instrument in public this is your time to break out with your best songs. This is when you bring it on, step up to the plate and show the world what you can do - as long as you prepared. Rehearse ahead of time with young children and adult friends before volunteering to play solo at local bar restaurants and senior centers. You'll have the time of your life and leave the audience with fun-loving lifelong memories.

There will be a moment when someone approaches you with a request you didn't prepare for. It happens every time so be prepared for unplanned "breaks" at any moment during your 20-minute set.
Build a song list with songs from your music journal. Don't have a journal? Start one today. The list should contain five to 25 songs lasting between one to two minutes for a 20 minute set. Don't despair. You didn't show up late, did you? You were late?? You can be many things as a performer but you can't be late when you're the star of the show. People are there for you and with great expectations. They will remember if you showed up late or not at all. Music students, this is serious busines. Always on time, no excuses. THE BACK STORY. A week after receiving the Casio SA-76 following months shopping for an affordable portable keyboard I regretted my purchase decision. Bracing for disappointment on Memorial Day I opened the box and turned on the keyboard. I could not believe my ears.
The sound quality of the Casio SA-76 is worth every penny. Returning it would have cost me more time and money. Instead, I took a risk and hoped for the best. Over the next five days, I learned how to use the features and played easy songs from Disney to Sound of Music. On day five with keyboard in tow, I visited my neighbors ready to share. They also lit up like Christmas trees and began to sing some of their favorite songs while I accompanied them with a happy face and noticeable assuredness.
This keyboard is the performance and teaching tool I was looking for. It is a gift from heaven. I can't praise the software and hardware designers enough for their workmanship. This product comes with written instructions for the Song Bank and a Song Book with the same songs ON PAPER. The interactive display is totally entertaining with notes, clefs and tempo matching the music. The Romantic period started around 1830 and ended around 1900, as compositions became increasingly expressive and inventive. Expansive symphonies, virtuosic piano music, dramatic operas, and passionate songs took inspiration from art and literature.
The Classical period falls between the Baroque and the Romantic periods. Classical music has a lighter, clearer texture than Baroque music, but a more sophisticated use of form. It is mainly homophonic, using a clear melody line over a subordinate chordal accompaniment, but counterpoint was by no means forgotten, especially in liturgical vocal music and, later in the period, secular instrumental music.
It also makes use of style galant which emphasized light elegance in place of the Baroque's dignified seriousness and impressive grandeur. Variety and contrast within a piece became more pronounced than before and the orchestra increased in size, range, and power.

Greetings from my kitchen! Today, it's all about matzo ball soup for Passover and rugelach. Delicious to eat and fun to make, rugelach (pronounced rug-a-lah) are miniature crescent-rolled pastries posing as cookies. They're made by rolling a triangle of dough around a sweet filling of fruit, nuts, chocolate or pretty much anything your heart desires.
Medium-textured matzo meal is about the same texture as cornmeal. It is used for baking, as a coating for fried foods, to thicken, and to make matzo balls from. Some folks refer to matzo as the "bread of affliction" because it represents our suffering as slaves, or as lechem oni, "poor man's bread" in Hebrew. .... Matzah is a food which man makes and bakes, no external element beyond wheat flour and water defines or influences its form."
Can I use flour instead of matzo meal?
For most applications, flour is not recommended as a replacement for matzo meal. Flour is much finer and, unlike matzo meal, hasn't been baked. During Passover, you can use approved flours like almond flour, quinoa flour, or teff flour for thickening sauces, breading, and some baked recipes.

Itzhak Perlman, (born August 31, 1945, Tel Aviv, Palestine [now Tel Aviv–Yafo, Israel]), Israeli-American violinist known for his brilliant virtuoso technique. His refinement of detail led many to regard him as one of the finest performers of the major violin repertoire of his time. Perlman was drawn to the violin after hearing it on the radio when he was three. His musical education was interrupted, however, when he contracted polio a year later (which left his legs with a permanent disability). After recovering, he showed great skill on the violin and later entered the Tel Aviv Academy of Music.
His first public concert was in Tel Aviv when he was 10. In 1958 he went to the United States to study at the Juilliard School in New York City with the renowned teachers Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay; in that same year he performed before a national television audience on the Ed Sullivan Show. He made his Carnegie Hall (New York City) debut in 1963 and won the prestigious Leventritt Prize a year later, which brought him immediate engagements with major American orchestras.
(The Leventritt Foundation awarded its violin and piano prizes only sporadically; the rarity of the prize and the value of the guaranteed engagements that came with it separated the Leventritt from other competitions.) As well as performing virtually the entire classical concert repertoire, he occasionally played with klezmer (traditional Jewish dance music) and jazz groups. He also played the solo violin passages in John Williams’s Oscar-winning score for the movie Schindler’s List (1993).
As a conductor, he worked with many of the great orchestras. He held the position of principal guest conductor with the Detroit Symphony from 2001 to 2005 and was music adviser of the St. Louis Symphony, Missouri, from 2002 to 2004. Perlman was also a teacher, regularly giving violin master classes and cofounding in 1998 (with his wife, Toby) the Perlman Music Program to encourage gifted string players aged 12 to 18.
He received 15 Grammy Awards between 1977 and 1995, and in 2008 he was given a Grammy for lifetime achievement. One of Dean Martin's most famous songs, "That's Amore" describes love the way they do it in the southern Italy town of Napoli ("Amore" is Italian for "Love"). Filled with passion, the singer compares the feeling to his favorite Italian foods: pizza and pasta fagiole. It's a quirky romantic song poking a bit of fun at Italian stereotypes, something Martin - born Dino Crocetti - had every right to do. The lyrics were written by Jack Brooks with music by Harry Warren. The song first appeared in the 1953 movie The Caddy, starring Martin and his comedy partner Jerry Lewis.
In his autobiography, Lewis said that when he and Dean were making The Caddy, the writers left Dean with little to do. This is another occasion over the years when someone who is a master of guitar helps someone (that would be me) who studies piano. Chord study was part of music theory in college. Ear training was about intervals. Put them all together and that's enough basic training to last a lifetime and make your dreams come true.
"Ode to Joy" is an ode written in the summer of 1785 by German poet, playwright, and historian Friedrich Schiller and published the following year in Thalia. A slightly revised version appeared in 1808, changing two lines of the first and omitting the last stanza.
"Ode to Joy" is best known for its use by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final (fourth) movement of his Ninth Symphony, completed in 1824. Beethoven's text is not based entirely on Schiller's poem, and it introduces a few new sections. His tune (but not Schiller's words) was adopted as the "Anthem of Europe" by the Council of Europe in 1972 and subsequently by the European Union. Rhodesia's national anthem from 1974 until 1979, "Rise, O Voices of Rhodesia", used the tune of "Ode to Joy".

Lee Davis published a book for beginners titled "Keyboard Primer". It is part of a Watch & Learn series and comes with a CD in the back of the book. There is also a video for this book which I do not own. He is also a recording artist. You can learn to play piano even though you don't own one. What is needed is access to a practice room. There are practice rooms in colleges with music programs which may or may not be open to the public. Check it out. Learning to play in public is learned while playing piano in public. It's the best of all worlds as a music student to play (practice) with an audience nearby. One or two people do fine as your confidence builds.

Although cars and trucks were lined up at the fuel pumps in numbers that seemed normal, there was a noticeable reduction of shoppers inside the store. By the time the Everly Brothers signed with Cadence Records in March 1957 (a deal midwifed by music publisher Wesley Rose of Acuff-Rose), they were singing teenage playlets crafted by songwriters Boudleaux and Felice Bryant overlaid with R&B rhythm patterns. They scored a string of hits, including “Bye, Bye Love,” “Wake Up, Little Susie,” “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” “Bird Dog,” and others. They became Grand Ole Opry members on June 1, 1957.
In a sense, though, Don and Phil Everly were more important to Nashville. They were the first consistently successful rock & roll act to come from there. Their management and their songs came from Nashville, and they recorded there with local session musicians. In other words, they extended Nashville’s sense of what was commercially possible. Arrabbiata sauce, or sugo all'arrabbiata in Italian, is a spicy sauce for pasta made from garlic, tomatoes, and dried red chili peppers cooked in olive oil. The sauce originates from the Lazio region, and particularly from the city of Rome. What's the difference between marinara sauce and arrabiata sauce? While both sauces use tomatoes as a base, arrabiata sauce includes red chile peppers (in this case I'm using red pepper flakes) to make it spicy. What is Flaxseed? Flaxseed is a small, brownish oilseed with a pleasant nutty taste. Its unique health benefits are due to the high levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. Tell us a bit about yourself.
I was born and raised in Athens. My parents are not Athenians though: They both come from the region of the Peloponnese, the southernmost part of continental Greece.
My background is a bit of a mixed bag. I have a degree in political science, another degree in acting, and two master's degrees, one in history and philosophy and one in theater directing. The latter I obtained in London, a city that became my home for seven years. On a professional level, I have worked in theater, tourism, and in several other professions, to the point where you could easily call me a jack-of-all-trades.
How did you get into guiding?
It all started by accident when I was living in London. At a certain point I was left without work, due to an unexpected cancellation of a theater show I had booked as an actor. This cancellation meant that I needed to find a job as soon as possible, since London is a very expensive city. A good friend of mine, who knew I spoke French, introduced me to a woman who owned a small tourist agency, which was looking for French-speaking people interested in doing transfers of French groups from the London airports to their hotels in central London. One thing led to the other, and pretty soon I started leading tours in London and the rest of the UK in French and gradually in English. After a while, I was leading tours all over the European continent, including in my home country, Greece. And the rest, as they say, is history….
What do you do when you're not leading tours?
I have a theater company based in Athens, and every year during the tourism off-season, I direct plays. I mostly direct classical plays, such as ancient Greek tragedies and Shakespeare. The goal is to discover why these plays have stood the test of time and how the topics they deal with have managed to remain relevant through all these centuries.
Tell us something about yourself that no one would ever guess.
I am an avid collector of vinyl records. So far, I have purchased 5,000 LPs, and my goal is to continue expanding my collection, since music has always been my greatest passion.

Born in 1958 into a musical family (the daughter of the Cathedral organist and choirmaster in Ottawa, Canada), Angela began her piano studies at age three, performed in public at four and a year later won her first scholarship. In her formative years, she also studied classical ballet, violin, and recorder. From 1963-73 she studied at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music with Earle Moss and Myrtle Guerrero, after which she completed her Bachelor of Music in Performance at the University of Ottawa in the class of French pianist Jean-Paul Sévilla, graduating at the age of 18. She was a prizewinner in numerous piano competitions in Europe, Canada, and the USA, but it was her triumph in the 1985 Toronto International Bach Piano Competition, held in memory of Glenn Gould, that truly launched her international career.
During the filming of Roman Polanski's 1992 film about Chopin (The Pianist) Adrian Brody lost 30 lbs. If we try hard enough we could play an easy arrangement of this Waltz in A Minor and even lose a few pounds. Early and intermediate players need to play the base and treble clefs separately at the onset. Brody spent time away from the piano throughout the film in other scenes portraying this composer. The video opens with a shopping trip in a find-it-yourself wine department. It continues with pictures of Julia Child, California winemakers, a Beard House wine dinner, tasting events in NYC and northern New Jersey where I wrote a monthly full-page wine column for local newspapers. Franz Liszt was a Hungarian pianist and composer of enormous influence and originality. He was renowned in Europe during the Romantic movement.
Liszt was born on October 22, 1811, in Raiding, Hungary. His father, Adam, played the cello, as well as several other instruments, and passionately taught Franz how to play piano. By the age of 6, young Liszt was recognized as a child prodigy; by the age of 8, he was composing elementary works; and by the age of 9, he was appearing in concerts. His father worked as a secretary for Prince Nicholas Esterhazy, and, after the boy played for a group of wealthy sponsors, he asked the prince for extended leave so he could devote his time to enriching his son's musical education. Happy New Year!! Learning to sight read and play the left hand opens many new doors for students. No need to rush. This is not a speed test. Listen closely to each note as you play and pay close attention to fingering. Get a good night's sleep. Expect miracles the next day during practice and throughout the week. This is a great way for music students to begin 2022.
“Ode to Joy” was written by German poet/playwright Friedrich Schiller in the summer of 1785. The ideal he described, of hope and brotherhood triumphing, was exactly what Beethoven wanted to convey in his Ninth Symphony. Although Beethoven had hoped originally that his music alone would describe the same sentiments, he ended up taking a risk and used some of the poem as the libretto for the final movement of his Ninth. The Ninth, also referred to commonly as the “Choral Symphony,” is believed to be the first example of a major composer using singers in a symphonic piece. Even today Beethoven’s tune with Schiller’s words enthralls everyone who hears it, from symphony audiences to fans of the 1988 movie, “Die Hard,” which used the piece in its score. Shelves are fully stocked at Sam's Club for major items. Joshua loaded four 52-lb. bags of cat litter on the cart for me and later walked me to my vehicle where he placed them in the trunk. It was his second day on the job as a new hire. Dominica walked me from the pet food isle back to the bakery for Tiramisu. Pam made my checkout experience one of best ever because of our shared interest in chicken salad sandwiches on croissants from the deli dept. Pam has worked at this Sam's Club for 13 years. Dominica started a year ago. Great customer service by Pam, Joshua, and Dominica (hope I spelled this name right) and another associate on Thursday, December 30, 2021. Let's take an inventory of our time spent learning new songs over these past few months. Practice time, sight reading, scales, chord studies and ear training all in preparation for tomorrow night. Today we check our closet for that perfect outfit. Hair, nails and makeup need our attention. Put a star on the practice room door. We are going to SHINE as we play and record one song before celebrating New Year's Eve. How do you plan to celebrate?
“Baby Face,” written by Harry Akst and Benny Davis was first published in 1926 by Warner Bros. and Davis Benny Music. Dating back decades before the pop era, it went on to have a big part to play in the career of Little Richard, among others. Then it became a US chart entry on September 29, 1962, for the one and only Bobby Darin. Who knew?
The triad can be defined as a chord made up of three tones (notes) called chord factors. They make up the diatonic scale. A D-major triad (aka chord) is made up of the notes D, F-sharp, and A. Add a major third above the major triad i.e., the root chord. The new note (the letter C) is the major seventh of the chord. It lies at the interval of a major seventh above the root.
What is an interval in music?
What is an Interval in Music? An interval in music is defined as a distance in pitch between any two notes. The larger the interval between two notes, then the greater the difference in pitch between the notes. A major 7th chord starts with the first five notes of the root chord. Thus: D, F#, A plus C. Use a chord guide for all other major and minor 7th chords. Baby Face is arranged in C Major with all major 7th chords and one A minor note near the end. This version contains no base clef. It's up to the player to fill in the base chords. It was a good lesson for us today about major and minor chords. It answers the question for some about which chords sound best for a particular song. Sometimes chords don't sound write in some arrangements; however, it may be due to our lack of training. Your choice.

Standard tuning, capo 2nd fret (sounding key A major). Since Larry Campbell joined the band in 1997, Tangled has been played as an acoustic song, with Larry playing the intro below. Larry's guitar is played with a capo on the 2nd fret, Bob's guitar is uncapoed. The chords are more or less those of the Blood on the Tracks version above.
Just because a song happens to be played in the key of Eb major, doesn't mean that it has to be tabbed in that key, when it is actually played in "C major" with a capo on the third fret.

A teacher who makes music sessions seem more like rehearsals will increase "public performance" skills more rapidly. At the very least, lessons should boost self-confidence as long as students practice on a regular basis and the money holds out. Music lessons for "one person" or two for at least one hour, once a week will produce faster results. The music teacher formulates the rate, schedule and style best suited for students. Two students attending the same session, pay the hourly rate set for one student. In my case, students paid $20 for a 90-minute or two-hour session. Time flies when you're having fun. Amandine Aurore Lucie Dupin, better known in the literary world as George Sand, not only took a man's name, but trotted around wearing pants and smoking cigars in public. No great shakes today, but in the 1800s she was perhaps the most famous (or infamous) woman in the world. One of the first original celebrities, aside from her garb and literary output, she was known to inspire many duels and broken hearts among other famous hedonist artists. One character describes her in Impromptu, as "that graveyard."
How should we go about this? Take it one step at a time starting with the music and learning more about the man. As well as practising the piano for four hours a day, Adrien Brody made a lot of personal sacrifices to star in Roman Polanski’s gripping war film, The Pianist. The Pianisttells the heart-wrenching story of acclaimed Polish Jewish musician, Wladyslaw Szpilman, who faces a series of struggles after losing contact with his family during the Second World War.
Directed by Roman Polanski and released in 2002, the haunting Holocaust drama is inspired by the autobiography, The Pianist: The Extraordinary True Story of One Man’s Survival in Warsaw, 1939-1945, and follows a radio station pianist (played by American actor, Adrien Brody) as he embarks on a harrowing journey through the ‘Warsaw Ghetto’.
By the time the Germans close the gates of the Ghetto on 15 November 1940, Szpilman’s family have sold all of their belongings – including his precious piano, and are forced to hide in bleak surroundings.
Using his pianism to help him survive, he plays at Café Nowoczesna, a café on Sienna Street frequented by the Jewish elite, and the Ghetto’s largest café, the Sztuka, before tragically losing his loved ones during Operation Reinhard. This major scale key is on the Circle of 5ths - Db major on circle of 5ths, which means that it is a commonly used major scale key. The definition of a chord in music is this: three or more single pitches heard simultaneously. Depending on the harmonic style, chords may be consonant, implying repose, or dissonant, implying subsequent resolution to and by another chord. Franz Xaver Gruber (25 November 1787 – 7 June 1863) was an Austrian primary school teacher, church organist and composer in the village of Arnsdorf, who is best known for composing the music to "Stille Nacht" ("Silent Night").
Rooted in the national folk tradition of Norway, Grieg’s music is noted for a refined lyrical sense. Between 1867 and 1901 he wrote ten collections of Lyric Pieces (Lyriske Stykker) for piano. His spirited rhythms often have a folk song association. His harmonies, developed from the late Romantic style, were considered novel. A clef is a musical-notation symbol at the beginning of a music staff. It indicates the pitch of the notes on the staff. During the 1960s, I drove a black, 8 cylinder, 4-door, standard transmission, gas hog with bench seats. Leaded gasoline was 30 cents a gallon at the time in the USA. Even though I lived just ten minutes from the office, I was late every morning. There was free parking on the street next to the building. Each morning I was greeted by the head of the accounting department. Her name was Martha. We worked quietly side by side throughout the day filing, answering phones and taking messages for salesmen. Those were the days. Fond memories.

Hey Jazer, those are some great tips; thanks! I have to disagree with you on part of your Tip #3. I don't think the money aspect of it is the least bit motivational for me. If I'm not in the mood to practice, the fact that it's costing me money is not going to change my mood, and I see that money as having already been spent (literally, since my school charges my credit card at the beginning of the month for the month's lessons). What DOES motivate me (the second part of your Tip #3) is the thought that I am going to play five pieces for my teacher three days from now, and if I don't practice, I AM GOING TO EMBARRASS MYSELF and generally be very unhappy the whole time I am there. Whereas, if I practice these pieces like crazy, she will be happy, and I will be happy! Motivation successfully located! :-)

Neil Archer has been playing organ and piano since 1975. As a kid, he used to struggle terribly reading music, and found writing it even more challenging. Even with private lessons, he found pretty quickly that it was a lot easier for him to listen to a song and work out the chords and melody in his head.
Once he sat down to play, Archer found that the piece was playable. Although he performed on some of the world's best cruise ships for nearly a decade he claims he still can't read music fluently. "As a really young kid in the early 1970's my grandad would sit me on the organ stool and I would actually play some of those songs. My grandad saw that there could be some potential from me and he set me up with some organ lessons. They started out in a local music store when I was 7 years old - and then I went on to private tuition on electronica organ and pipe / theater organ until I was 15. I performed my first organ concert when I was 8 years old. I played piano a little as a kid and in church, but it wasn't until I worked on cruise ships that I really had to adapt from organ to piano. I played professionally from 1997 to 2005 on cruise ships, river boats and hotels around the world."

Johann Pachelbel, (baptized September 1, 1653, Nürnberg [Germany]—died March 3, 1706, Nürnberg), German comser known for his works for organ and one of the great organ masters of the generation before Johann Sebastian Bach.
Johann Pachelbel is unfairly viewed as a one-work composer, that work being the popular, Canon in D major, for three violins and continuo. He was an important figure from the Baroque period who is now seen as central in the development of both keyboard music and Protestant church music. Some have summarized his primary contribution as the uniting of Catholic Gregorian chant elements with the Northern German organ style, a style that reflected the influence of the Protestant chorale.
A Lutheran, he spent several years in Vienna, where he was exposed to music by Froberger and Frescobaldi, which influenced his work with the chorale-prelude. His music in this genre would, in turn, influence the compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, among others. It should be noted that many of Pachelbel's works are difficult to date, thus rendering judgments about his stylistic evolution questionable in many cases. Charles Wesley was born just before Christmas in 1707. When he was eight years old, he was taken to London to attend Westminster School. At age thirteen, he became a King's Scholar at Westminster. Upon graduating, he enrolled at Oxford. He was nineteen and full of life. He later said, "My first year at college I lost in diversions." At age 31, he wrote, "I now found myself at peace with God, and rejoiced in hope of loving Christ. I saw that by faith I stood." These tips won’t resolve despair, but they can take the edge off and open up a space for healing.
- Take your despair for a walk.
Once a day, try your best to get out of the house for some fresh air. A brisk walk raises your metabolism, boosts endorphins, and will give you much-needed headspace. Shaking off tension and gaining some vitamin D can also offer some relief.
- Give your sorrow words.
When I can’t find the words for sadness, I always turn to poets and writers who are masters at capturing elusive feelings. Finding the words for your despair offers comfort and solace. As Shakespeare wrote in Macbeth: “Give sorrow words; the grief that does not speak knits up the o-er wrought heart and bids it break.”
- Honor your despair.
Please don’t deny it. Don’t push it away. When you acknowledge your despair, you take away some of its power over you.

Halloween is a holiday that draws Americans to all things edible, sippable and spooky. For some it's about cookies, parties and bobbing for apples. Not much will be covered about men in their 60's and older because I lack experience with older men other than they like a woman who can cook. They fall in love easily, are generous with their time but not much else. When they introduce you to their grown children, you know they're serious and most likely in love with you. These men are a good catch if you fall in love with them which will take more time on your part. These men will be patient and hope it happens. It is selfish on your part to keep them waiting for and on you while you drain their bank accounts. This is no longer about love but greed.
Many men have been taken to the cleaners by greedy women. If you are receiving financial help from a man in a long distance relationship and playing this game - shame on you. If you are in a pretend "marriage" for financial reasons with a man who is in love, double shame on you. How would he know you are dishonest and cheating on him - long distance? He wouldn't. The question for self-taught drummers at home, in the garage or the football field, what music were they listening to with earphones on their head? Are drums just about keeping time or is there much more going on? This episode is about the passing of Alex Lasarenko by Fritz Doddy.
As music professionals, the whole of our career is the sum of our experiences in life along with our interactions with family, friends, and other music professionals. Alex Lasarenko was my creative director for over 10 years during our shared time at Elias Arts, now Elias Music. Elias earned the reputation as the “gold standard” because of its commitment to consistent quality and innovation when it came to writing and producing music. That reputation was earned, in no small part, due to Alex’s passion and drive to be the best.
Alex was a tough boss. He demanded quality, innovation, and a commitment to craftsmanship and artistry. His criticism could cut like a knife. Once, he famously blew up one of my potential tracks by just hearing one chord. One chord! I hadn’t even written anything yet! But, he had an instinct for good writing and championed us all. He never wavered in his support for his composers.
At the time, Alex couldn’t be bothered with the fine print of learning the burgeoning digital music technology. He had something better, sublime talent! While the rest of us wrestled with music, Alex danced with it. As a writer, he could go from pompous and extravagant, to simple and pastoral, instantly and effortlessly, as if Bach himself was whispering instructions in his ear. As a player, he coaxed myriad emotions out of the piano - peace, anger, joy, despair. If it was part of the human condition, he felt it and could play it.
We laughed a lot, and often. We annoyed our employers on occasion with our antics and shenanigans. If Alex wasn’t in the middle of it, he nodded quietly in approval. Elias wasn’t a stuffy, polite, or conventional company. The shit was crazy, and there are plenty of stories…
After Alex left Elias to start his own company, he remained a prolific composer and recording artist, releasing numerous albums and scoring many films and TV shows. We talked and emailed on occasion and had dinner a few times. But life and work have a way of separating folks.
My wife has a lovely saying, “In every relationship there is a flower and a gardener.” It’s true. Looking back, one could say that Alex was the flower in the relationship with his staff due to his need for control and perfection. But I believe the opposite is true. He pulled the weeds from our musical gardens, trimmed the dead parts of our sonic vocabulary, and forced us to bloom into the composers we are today. We were the flowers.
Dear Alex, we are forever in your debt - RIP 1963-2020.

FYI: Merengue is a style of Dominican music and dance. Partners hold each other in a closed position. The leader holds the follower's waist with the leader's right hand, while holding the follower's right hand with the leader's left hand at the follower's eye level. Partners bend their knees slightly left and right, thus making the hips move left and right. The hips of the leader and follower move in the same direction throughout the song. Born Robert Earl Clark in Newcastle, Indiana, in 1928, the famed “Love” artist changed his name in 1958 not long after moving to New York City—a way to pay homage to his home state, but also to help make him stand out in the art scene. And that he did: at his death in 2018, Robert Indiana held a firm spot in the art-historical continuum. At times the book reads like a police procedural—cooked books, tampering with evidence, questions about the artist’s living conditions, even foul play: Indiana’s body was briskly removed from the island just days after a lawsuit had been filed against him by the Morgan Art Foundation for breach of contract.
Unlike, say, the famous Brooke Astor case, which also had its share of twists and turns—and accusations of elder abuse—there were few high-profile friends and/or celebrities to question Indiana’s treatment. That said, the artist had his champions, among them, art historian John Wilmerding, who wrote or co-wrote several books on the artist, including The Essential Robert Indiana (2013). As someone who knew the work intimately, Wilmerding smelled forgery in some of the later work, including a series that featured Bob Dylan lyrics, but he also recognized that Indiana “was his own undoing.”
The U.S. Postal Service recently released its latest iteration of its “Love” stamp, a series started in 1973 with Indiana’s famous design (he was paid a $1,000 fee). There is enormous irony that the artist best known for his interpretations of that four-letter word ended up for the most part unloved. Indiana’s story is, in Keyes’s words, “a tragedy of Shakespearean machinations,” but it is also a tale of ego, eccentricity, and enmity. You’ll be shaking your head by the end.
The Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland is currently showing “Robert Indiana: The Hartley Elegies,” 10 large-scale silkscreen prints from the series made between 1989 and 1994. The show runs through Jan. 2, 2022.

The term MIDI is an abbreviation for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. MIDI keyboard pianos are actually part of setups used in music studios for producing music. Using a MIDI controller to play everything from piano pieces to bass lines, or even guitars or drums, gives a better feeling, a human touch. It’s far better than simply programming the notes with a mouse and a keyboard, although the end result is the same, a series of digital information resulting in a pleasant sound. A MIDI keyboard piano doesn't get you booked at Carnegie Hall. That comes from raw talent, skill, judgment, experience and psychological disposition.
For those that already know how to play a keyboard instrument, it makes the transition from playing to producing much easier, and it’s recommended that you certainly get a MIDI keyboard piano if you’re that kind of person. Although there are some models that will allow you to play them like a digital keyboard (the ones with 88 keys), they are still primarily made to help you in the studio when you’re producing music. It allows all the instruments and computers to communicate between them.
When producing music you need to get the information, the sound and everything else, from your musical setup to your DAW (digital audio workstation). The DAW can be an electronic device, or it can be a piece of software installed on a computer. To make the connection between the setup and the DAW, you need a MIDI interface. As such, it consists of the interface, the connectors that you can use to make a piece of hardware “communicate” to another, and the data language.
A MIDI controller will be useless by itself, so it needs to work alongside other pieces of hardware, to form a setup. And for that it needs to connect to them, doing that through cables. So when discussing a MIDI keyboard, we need to take into account the whole ensemble. SOURCE: Musicality Realm.

BLESSED ASSURANCE - Text by Fanny Crosby. "Blessed Assurance" was published in 1873 in the monthly magazine edited by Joseph Fairchild Knapp and Phoebe Palmer Knapp, Guide to Holiness. Editor John R. Sweney included it in Gems of Praise (Philadelphia, 1873), and Knapp also chose it for "Bible School Songs" (1873). Perhaps the biggest boost came when it appeared in Gospel Songs, No. 5 (1887) by Ira Sankey and was sung extensively in the Moody and Sankey revivals in Great Britain and the United States. It has been a part of Methodist hymnals since 1889.
This hymn has inspired many singers ranging from those in evangelistic crusades to theologians. Don E. Saliers, William R. Cannon Distinguished Professor of Theology and Worship Emeritus at Candler School of Theology, Emory University in Atlanta, borrowed a portion of the opening stanza for his liturgical theology text, Worship as Theology: Foretaste of Glory Divine (1994). If one enters "foretaste of glory divine" into a Google search, numerous sermon titles appear that incorporate this phrase. YouTube renditions of the hymn abound.
Crosby captured the poetic essence of the Wesleyan understanding of Christian perfection in the phrase, "O what a foretaste of glory divine!" The entire hymn is focused on heaven, a place where "perfect submission" and "perfect delight" [stanza 2] will take place. The earthly existence is one of "watching and waiting, looking above" [stanza 3]. As we submit ourselves to Christ and are "filled with his goodness" and "lost in his love" [stanza 3], we are remade in Christ's image and are moving toward Christian perfection.
This hymn appeals to the senses in a rich way. Not only do we have a "foretaste of glory," we experience "visions of rapture [that] burst on my sight," and we hear "echoes of mercy, whispers of love" [stanza 2].
The refrain calls us to "prais[e]. . . my Savior all the day long," echoing I Thessalonians 5:17, "Pray without ceasing."
Middle class women in nineteenth-century United States had little voice in worship, however. One of the only ways for a woman to claim the authority to be heard was by direct personal revelation from God. Fanny Crosby readily claimed God's personal revelation as a source for her hymns; her personal revelation then became a communal inspiration as Christians throughout the world sang her hymns and confirmed her faith experience as their own. KALEB BRASEE - Q. What piano are you playing? A. My piano is a Yamaha Clavinova CVP-407. It has a great feel and decent sound, but since 2015 I have used Pianoteq software to create the sound for the videos. Pianoteq takes MIDI files from my Clavinova (or any other MIDI keyboard) and makes them sound a lot like a real grand piano.
Q. Do you have sheet music available for a video? A. I currently have sheet music available for 19 songs that I've played, available at www.brasee.com. Each sheet music is written to sound exactly like I played it in the video. Right now I am only able to make sheet music for public domain hymns older than 1923 due to licensing, but if I can figure that out I will definitely make some sheet music for modern songs.

Also, Roger Evan's book "How to Read Music". Examine the details of each song and/or exercise from the key signature, phrasing, left hand, accidentals and dynamics. Composers use dynamics from soft to loud to indicate to the performer how their music is to sound.
Designate a specific time of day to sight read and play. Sight reading means reading the notes without playing. Pick a song you're working on or would like to learn. Believe in yourself. Begin each session with a positive mindset and dig in for at least 40 minutes. Over time progress will be yours and you'll be happy with the results.

It was originally titled "Hey Jules," after Lennon's son, Julian. The famous Beatles track, 'Hey Jude' was one of the few compositions to be written directly about, and for, a personal associate. The lyrics espouse a positive outlook on a sad situation, while also encouraging "Jude" to pursue his opportunities to find love. Josephine Baker (born Freda Josephine McDonald, naturalised French Joséphine Baker; 3 June 1906 – 12 April 1975) was an American-born French entertainer and civil rights activist. This is the wedding theme by Richard Wagner also known as the "Bridal Chorus" from the 1850 opera Lohengrin by German composer Richard Wagner, who also wrote the libretto, is a march played for the bride's entrance at many formal weddings throughout the Western world. In English-speaking countries, it is generally known as "Here Comes the Bride". Wagner’s piece was made popular when it was used as the processional at the wedding of Victoria the Princess Royal to Prince Frederick William of Prussia in 1858. Although at most weddings the chorus is usually played on an organ without singing, in Lohengrin the wedding party sings these words at the beginning of act three.

It worked for me in my first performance class as a college student enrolled in a music education program. I began to play in what could best be described as a musical zone. - John Lennon has described this time of his life as his "fat Elvis period." In a 1971 interview with Rolling Stone, Lennon said this is one of his favorite Beatles records, because, "I meant it - it's real." He added: "The lyric is as good now as it was then. It is no different, and it makes me feel secure to know that I was that aware of myself then. It was just me singing 'Help' and I meant it."
Paul McCartney helped Lennon write the song, but did not realize it was actually Lennon calling for help until years later. The hit song was released in 1965. John Lennon played rhythm guitar on this track using a 12-string acoustic.
The song runs just 2:18, but packs in 267 words, making it one of the most lyrically dense hits of the era. It starts and ends on a vocal, and there are two vocal lines running throughout the song, as John Lennon sings lead while George Harrison and Paul McCartney do backgrounds, singing some of the same phrases either before or after Lennon. Some years ago, a dear friend gifted me with a one-quart container of pure Vermont maple syrup. I explained I was not a big fan because it was too sweet for my taste. I may have kept the conversation short trying to keep her feelings from getting hurt. I had not even open it. Some years later, I opened it. To my delight, this Vermont Grade A Medium Amber syrup was DELICIOUS! Upon her suggestion, I might even sweeten my coffee with it - if I could afford it. Since that time, whenever I cook pancakes, I reach for the maple syrup. I also thank God for this friend I have known and loved since high school who lives long distance. Have a great weekend. The Word of God comes in a book with many chapters about relief from despair and loss. It is about healing troubled minds and living a life of peace and assurance. It is not a psychology book. Thank you for listening to this episode about the method I use to alleviate lower back pain that doesn't require exercise equipment or a chiropractor. This method can be done at home without the help of anyone. However, I would keep a phone nearby to call for help in case you can't get up. It works as long as your back muscles are strong. If not, I recommend stretching exercises in a heavy comfortable chair. Just twist and turn and lift yourself from a seated position. This works, too. Reaching for the sky also relieves back pain.
There are so many ways to maintain a strong back that don't require a health club membership or investment in expensive exercise equipment. In case you already own this equipment, I encourage you to give my methods a chance. I hope the long hours spent sitting down are not the actual cause of your lower back pain. Seems everything we do these days has us seated somewhere in a vehicle(s), on a train, a bus or airplane and at mealtimes (unless you work in retail). The only place we seem to rise is in church to read from the bible and sing or in court when the judge enters the courtroom. All rise!

Treatment of back pain has undergone a recent sea change. Experts now appreciate the central role of exercise to build muscles that support the back. This Special Health Report, Back Pain: Finding solutions for your aching back, helps you understand why back pain occurs and which treatments are most likely to help. This report describes the different types of back problems and the tailored treatments that are more likely to help specific conditions. End of story. I have a few questions starting with what kind of exercise? What about furniture and long hours seated in front of computers or watching YouTube videos? Laying in bed seems to be one recommendation that makes sense. However, as some total body health experts explain - man was not meant to sit down for long hours every day. Think about it. Do people who make a living standing up or moving about throughout the day experience less back pain? Lifting with the legs and not the back has always been recommended. Maybe there's just a history of lower back pain or an injury resulting from playing sports or running. So many causes, it difficult to settle on any one recommendation. Stretching is what I do to keep my back strong and pain free. Stretching. Try it.
For years, my father complained about lower back pain. It wasn't until I saw the recliner in the living room where he sat watching TV with no back support that it all made sense. This was an old recliner before ergonomically-designed furniture was available and purchased by some employers for their office workers. Putting a pillow behind your lower back also helps alleviate back pain.
According to HealthBeat, an online service by the Harvard Medical School, stress, anxiety, and negative emotions have all been linked to a higher likelihood of developing back pain. The reasons for this are not completely understood. Chronic pain and depression share some of the same biochemical features. Imbalances in the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine, for example, play a role in mood disorders such as depression and also are involved in producing the sensation of pain. This could explain why people suffering from depression tend to experience more severe and long-lasting pain than other people. Thanks for listening.

When love is real but doesn't seem to last, we "gird our loins" and get on with our lives - or perish. "Gird your loins" is a line from the movie "The Devil Wears Prada" with Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci. The subtitle is Hell on Heels. Some years ago I wrote a screenplay and entered it in the 7th Annual International Screenplay Competition organized by the American Screenwriters Association and Writer's Digest. It took one year to write. I was speaking with agents. It was later retitled Married to a Mensa. Andrea "Andy" Sachs is an aspiring journalist newly graduated from Northwestern University. Despite her ridicule for the shallowness of the fashion industry, she lands a job as junior personal assistant to Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, a job that "millions of girls would kill for". Andy plans to put up with Miranda's excessive demands and humiliating treatment for one year in the hopes of getting a job as a reporter or writer somewhere else.
At first, Andy fumbles with her job and fits in poorly with her gossipy, fashion-conscious co-workers, especially Miranda's senior assistant, Emily Charlton. After a dress trial meeting in which Miranda berates her in front of the entire team, she approaches art director Nigel to help her learn the ropes in the world of fashion. She begins to dress stylishly and starts showing effort for the position, accommodating all of Miranda's whims and fancies. Problems arise in her relationship with her boyfriend, Nate, who increasingly finds her spending all her time at her new boss's beck and call.
Miranda starts to notice Andy's changed appearance and commitment and begins to give her more responsibility and complicated tasks to handle. Slowly but surely, Andy becomes more glamorous and begins aligning herself, unwittingly at first, to the Runway philosophy. She gradually begins to outperform Emily at her job. Emily, meanwhile, is consumed with the thought of attending Paris Fashion Week as Miranda's assistant, and starts to lose her health by attempting extreme diets. At a charity benefit, she fails to provide information about a guest making his way to meet Miranda. Andy manages to save Miranda from embarrassment and is rewarded by being asked to replace Emily as Miranda's assistant at Fashion Week. Miranda tells Andy to inform Emily that she won't be going to Paris, but when Andy calls Emily, Emily is hit by a car and ends up in the hospital. Andy then tells the recovering Emily the news and Emily is infuriated. When Andy tells Nate she is going to Paris, he is angered that she has become what she once ridiculed, and they break up.
In Paris, Andy learns from Miranda herself about her impending divorce. Later that night, Nigel tells Andy that he has accepted a job as creative director with rising designer James Holt. Further, Andy spends the night with an attractive young writer, Christian Thompson, who reveals to her that Miranda is set to be replaced by Jacqueline Follet as editor of Runway. Feeling bad for Miranda in her current situation, Andy attempts to warn her but does not manage to get through.

Today's technology makes it possible to connect with friends by social media sites like Facebook, hand-held devices and computers. Connecting with friends has never been easier until they are flat on their back in bed. Not everyone is able to drive to the hospital or wants to call for an ambulance. These are times we depend on co-workers or friends with a car to get us there. Consider this: women giving birth to babies are admitted by medical professionals in the same areas of the hospital with people who have Covid-like symptoms, planned surgeries, heart attacks and other urgent needs. In this podcast I sing a few lines from the song "Don't Be Cruel". Music by Elvis Presley makes me happy. This episode is about a trip down memory lane when I was in high school. I was in love with my boyfriend who was very kind, played football, made me feel safe and very happy. Being together on weekends lifted my spirits and made me feel alive. We didn't make it to the altar, but it was liberating for about one year. It just wasn't meant to be. When you are taught by other people to be aim at being second best, ask yourself this question. Why do I believe this? Think about the game of bows and arrows. The target is clearly marked. The goal is to hit the bull's eye in order to win. Ignore everything ever written about being No. One (beating competitors) and all psychological studies ever written and published for general consumption if being second best makes you happy. Why would you want to teach somebody else to be second best when being being FIRST or number one brings the greatest amount of happiness? Horse races. Marathon races. This episode is about a pasta cooking course I taught for adults while living and working in Annapolis, Maryland. It was an eight week course sponsored by the Department of Recreation and Parks beginning October 5, 1995. The first class was held four weeks after approval, not two. Students brought homemade dishes to share and sample penne pasta that was catered. Chef Lila Robinson-Berry, the speaker, prepared hot dishes for a local food market and talked about chicken fettuccini primavera. After that, students met at local Italian restaurants with presentations by cooks or general managers. All students received a 20% group discount for a special dinner selection not including alcoholic beverages. Five years later, I was hosting WineScoop, a website about food, wine and tasting events throughout northern New Jersey and New York City.
In Italian, primavera means spring, and this classic warm-weather dish is surely a favorite this time of year on account of its celebration of all things light and fresh. Today's podcast was inspired by a young software developer from Texas visiting a next door neighbor. After we talked, I remembered my job for a tech company in New Jersey with software developers. Every Friday after work during the summer, we gathered together on the balcony for beer and pizza to welcome the weekend. We were close to prepared food for breakfast and lunch at a cafeteria nearby and even closer to beer and wine in the office refrigerator. If you were lucky, there may also have been children's books to read at home with words and pictures. I also liked to read everything put in front of me from food labels and instructions to newspapers and textbooks. In the workplace as an adult, I found myself surrounded by accomplished writers. In an Britannica article refuting Bach's belief that music can be taught, there is little to no justification for these critical skills: memory, repetition, practice and fingering. Where and how are these skills activated? My theory is that they come from listening followed by action taken and then stored somewhere in the brain. This is about brain fitness if you will. Everyday requires motivation, warmups, determination and a set time for practice. Practice makes permanent. Mastery may seem to take forever but should happen based on these components: memory, psychological disposition, judgment, skill, and time set aside to practice. “Ode to Joy” was written by German poet/playwright Friedrich Schiller in the summer of 1785. The ideal he described, of hope and brotherhood triumphing, was exactly what Beethoven wanted to convey in his Ninth Symphony.
By the time Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, with its huge 'Ode to Joy' climax, was premiered on 7 May 1824, the composer was profoundly deaf. Ludwig van Beethoven's revolutionary Ninth Symphony is, without question, one of the greatest works in classical repertoire. “He uses solo voices in a symphony for the first time, setting the words of Schiller’s poem An die Freude.
It is the longest and most complex of all his symphonies, which we may regard it as the pinnacle of his achievement, because it is his last symphony – but he was working on his tenth when he died.
For almost 200 years, the famous hymnal theme to this symphony’s finale – the ‘Ode to Joy’ – has symbolized hope, unity and fellowship – across borders and through conflicts.

Beethoven’s ‘Choral’ is arguably the greatest symphony ever composed: the summit of his achievements, a masterful musical celebration of the human race and a massive work that makes all who hear it feel better about life. And yet, Beethoven himself never actually heard it.
The man who had done more than anyone before him to change the way we hear music had become one for whom sounds could no longer exist – and the bitter irony of this was not lost on him.
Despite his deteriorating hearing, though, Beethoven persevered with writing this mammoth symphony. Encouraged, no doubt, by his status as the composer of the moment, he penned a colossal work.
But, when Beethoven conducted its premiere, he was famously unaware of the rapturous response his ninth symphony received. It took one of the musicians to alert him to the cheering audience – and that was only at the end of the second movement.

When it comes to music, there are probably more musicians who are self-taught than there are stars in the sky. Without knowing the fundamentals of music notation, writing down your own songs (to remember) poses many challenges. One option is to make a recording. Your compositions need to be nurtured by a witness. With great music in his head during the last moments of his life, Wolfgang Mozart depended on another musician to write down the notes for him. My father grew up on a farm in SE Ohio during the great Depression. He was one of seven siblings who learned about growing things at a very early age. During one visit to the farmhouse where they lived, I fed the chickens. Within minutes there was a blister on my right thumb from the corn cob I was given to feed them. What I remember is that it was yellow corn, not white. Seemed wonderful at the time. Knowing about chicken feed in farm supply stores across the land makes it seem primitive unless your knowledge of the 1930's kicks in. I was eight years old during this visit. Many years later that I told my father I wanted to be a farmer. He cringed. It never happened. There has always been a deep appreciation of farm life, farm animals and growing things. Here's the recipe from my cookbook for couscous to serve with marinated shish kabobs. It is easier than making it by hand in a two-tiered steamer. Step 1: bring chicken broth to a boil. Stir in couscous and remove from heat. Let stand, covered for five minutes. Step 2: Place zucchini, red onion, grated carrots and one minced garlic clove into a large skillet with 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil. Cook and stir five minutes or until tender. Step 3: Add beans, seasonings and couscous. Cook and stir until thoroughly heated, about two minutes. Prep time: 15 minutes. Makes six servings. Today's episode is about having a feel good day. What does this mean? It means writing a to-do list starting with morning coffee. That's what I do everyday that I can remember looking back. Running to catch the subway when I worked in New York City meant stopping by the food truck near the station for coffee and a toasted English muffin. It meant having another cup at my desk from the coffee room in the office where I worked as a legal secretary or administrative assistant. Seems coffee was an essential part to my life everywhere I traveled to and from the office and restaurants, attending college classes, at mealtimes and on vacation. These days, much of my time is spent outdoors doing yard work, caring for two cats, growing things and baking apple pies. Each day begins with coffee to get me started and keep me going so I can have a feel good day. Not much time anymore for coffee breaks anywhere. I miss that. It could change at any moment by the sound of lawn tractors or trumpet practice by the boy next door. Reminds me of the movie City Slickers. Things changed from a quiet breakfast in New Mexico to a cattle stampede when Billy Crystal turned on his coffee bean grinder. Afterwards, Jack Palance, the cattle boss says disparagingly - "city folk". This podcast reminds me of the quiet life lived by my uncle and his family on a small dairy farm. Except for the sound of machinery and barn noise from milking cows, there was no music to be heard, just weather reports and farm news on the radio. In City Slickers, two friends organized a fantasy vacation for Billy Crystal who was depressed about turning 40. When do dairy farmers take vacations or time off on weekends? Rarely if ever. They are focused on work and tractor repairs, not listening to music. Staying home to watch a movie is more likely to happen than boarding a plane for a fantasy vacation with two friends. It's about being relaxed at home alone in control of the remote with devices turned off and having food delivered .... maybe. Not a bad thing. Just needs to happen.
What do we know about Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750). He was born in Eisenach, Germany, composer of the Baroque era, and the most celebrated member of a large family of north German musicians. In 1695, when he was just nine years old, his parents died. He was sent to live with his brother, Johann Christoph, an organist. Johann Sebastian Bach had a prestigious musical lineage and took on various organist positions during the early 18th century, creating famous compositions like "Toccata and Fugue in D minor." Some of his best-known compositions are the "Mass in B Minor," the "Brandenburg Concertos" and "The Well-Tempered Clavier." Bach died in Leipzig, Germany, on July 28, 1750. When it comes to playing piano, finding the right key and reading sheet music is as much about listening as it is about playing. During today's trip to Sam's Club, there were noticeably fewer shoppers indoors and more vehicles outdoors with drivers lined up to fill up their gas tanks in spite of temperatures reaching 90 degrees. Who does that? People who are motivated to act before gas prices move up even higher. Today, there were fewer people inside Sam's Club. It may have been due to the current heat wave. However, according to today's CDC's recommendations, when mask mandates are resumed hoarding may also return early this fall. Stock up now. Fill your gas tank now. Thank you for listening.
Increase your practice time enjoyment by playing piano along with recorded music. Play songs you know with or without sheet music at every level. Remember to quit while you're ahead. Don't worry about making fingering mistakes and keeping up with the indicated tempo. It's normal to lose your place while sight reading and playing. Believe ear training is important in the learning process and there is magic in your fingers and hands. Start by finding middle C. With regular practice music can become part of your life. Some digital keyboards come with more sounds than piano. On my Yamaha Portable Grand DGX-640 they are called voices. In this episode you will hear a brief presentation using drum kits no. 143. If there are children or grandchildren in your family or neighborhood with an interest in music and little fingers, this is a good introduction to the keyboard. Digital pianos, after all, are about having fun while learning to master the instrument. For classical piano students, continue working on scales, Hanon exercises and all the rest but take time to discover everything else this instrument has to offer. With portable keyboards and a few friends, you could form a small band and have fun learning to play together with different voices. One person on piano, another on strings and someone else on brass or winds. Remember to record your sessions in front of a camera and with flash drives. Share them with friends. What does it take to become a musician? Johannes Sebastian Bach believed anyone could learn to play a musical instrument if they were teachable and worked hard. The Encyclopedia Britannica published an review by an author with an opposing viewpoint including six skills needed to play a musical instrument. They are raw talent, imagination, psychological disposition, judgment, skill and experience. The author concluded that music is unteachable and unlearnable. What do you think? Meet the author. Thank you for tuning in to today's podcast about my life as a musician. What is that? The Internet defines it as a person who plays a musical instrument, especially as a profession, or is musically talented. Example: "Your father was a fine musician." Perhaps this describes you, a member of your family, a teacher or orchestra leader. I've known two orchestra leaders in my lifetime, one from New Jersey and the other from New York who was Greek. After several private bouzouki lessons, he said to me during one of our many conversations that I was "not made for one person." He had only known me a short time but was amazed at my interest in this Greek stringed instrument. Not only was I the only female student, but the only American student taking lessons. Welcome to today's podcast about the role of witnessing in relationships. Everywhere we turn today there are cameras pointed at us recording our behavior. Too much or too little? Today's technology makes being unobserved nearly impossible. Watching movies is a form of witnessing. Writers, artists and musicians who live alone may want to give this matter some serious thought before partnering up with another person. It may take longer to adjust after spending most days and nights being in the zone without being watched, distracted and interrupted by someone else. Just saying.
Today's podcast is about romantic movies and finding love on the Internet. Here is one summary from Sleepless in Seattle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan from Imdb - International Movie Database. Summary (edited): It was Christmas eve when Sam (Tom Hanks) pours out his heart on a national radio talk show about his magical and perfect marriage to Maggie. Sam is an architect. Eighteen months after her untimely death, he still misses her.
Annie (Meg Ryan), who is already engaged to be married to Walter is among the many women who hear Sam's story. She is a Baltimore-based newspaper writer. Walter is unlike Annie's dream love life in the movie "An Affair to Remember" released in 1957. Annie writes to Sam proposing they meet atop the Empire State Building on Valentine's Day. Love happens at first sight on that day when they meet face to face for the first time as the elevator doors close on the ride down to street level never to be heard from again. There are three ways to learn to play piano. First, practice in a quiet room without distractions – real or imagined. Second, stay hydrated. Take breaks with your favorite beverage. Learning to play piano is hard work for most students of any age. Third, change things up regarding a practice schedule. Suggested ways to do this are described here and on video at my YouTube channel with the same name: Music4dad. Your playing will improve over time when you give it your all. It may be difficult for some listeners to adequately define lyric and dramatic musical expression. Drama is often associated with theatrical excitement. Consider moments of great tension in movies and operas that are accompanied by music that is tense and exciting. The fire and spirit of a fuoco (Italian - a burning passion in a figurative sense. Source: Daily Italian Words) and the grandeur and majesty of a grandioso are just two ways to express drama in the language of music. In short, the music needs to suit the mood and occasion.
Within the first year of moving to New York City after high school, I found a small apartment with a Greek family in Queens. Living in the same home with a Greek family opened up a whole new world for me. My new life was now about Greek food, soccer, politics and the Greek Orthodox church. This new world felt so comfortable from the food, camaraderie and especially the music. The only music heard over the radio in the house was Greek. I fell in love with it as I listened for hours during the weekends.
During the week I worked in New York City as a legal secretary. On weekends I was becoming a Greek. I even took music lessons for a short time from a teacher who knew how to play the bouzouki.
