Jon draws on the ups and downs of his business to explain what has motivated him the most -- and what has led to a lack of motivation.
If someone is served three ads on the day they ultimately convert, which ad gets credit? Do multiple ads get credit? Do they all get credit? Here's how it works...
The idea of publishing a video every day is overwhelming to most people. But the truth is that it's actually not that hard, as long as you're committed to it and have a no-excuses approach. It's not about batch-recording your videos either...
When I started testing an AI chatbot, I knew it had the potential to add value. But what I didn't anticipate was the indirect impact it's had on my content creation.
How much of your budget should you dedicate to remarketing? Start with the 80-20 rule. But there are four primary factors that could impact this approach.
Meta wants you to turn on Advantage+ Placements every time you create an ad set. If not, when should you? And when should you be more careful?
They may not be dead yet, but all signs are that we're heading in this direction. Here's why...
AI chatbots are new and exciting, but they're coming out so quickly that we may miss some obvious issues with how they work.
If you have a video that does way worse than your typical videos, don't be afraid of republishing it. You may be surprised by the results that you get.
It makes sense why some ad reviews can take a while. But there are others where there's no excuse. The inefficiency likely costs Meta.
Is it possible that Meta gave two different products nearly exactly the same name? It sure appears so. And what's the deal with naming everything Advantage and Advantage+? And what does that + even mean?
Over time, we tend to get stuck in our ways. We learn from what works and what doesn't work for us, and this results in strong opinions and rigid processes. This can be dangerous.
Stop blaming the system when your ads aren't working. Don't tell me that Facebook ads don't work. They don't work for you. The way that you're using them. But, they could work for you!
If you're a Facebook advertiser, I encourage you to be curious. Don't worry so much about what others are doing. Instead of asking whether you should do something, try it. Experiment!
Meta gives you a whole bunch of metrics to distract you with. Be careful. Ultimately, there are only a couple of metrics you should truly care about. Everything else is merely secondary or tertiary.
We often overthink things with Facebook ads. Whether it's the optimization, targeting, placements, number of ads, or number of ads. While there are exceptions, less is almost always more.
This isn't about exploiting the ads algorithm or understanding how to create ads it prefers. It's knowing that it's powerful, literal, and not perfect. Know how it works and why. And know how that can help and hurt you.
Being ethical should be a habit. The risk otherwise to your business is too great. Know the rules inside and out and do all you can to follow them. Ignorance is not an excuse.
In a recent report, Meta reported that the percentage of views that included links is down to 7.7%, which is nearly cut in half since the third quarter of 2021. What might explain this? And does it really mean anything?
Meta recently announced huge changes to Aggregated Event Measurement, which is their protocol for handling opt-outs. It seems to be great for advertisers, at least in terms of making it easier. But I have lots of questions!
It would be foolish to ignore Barcelona, Meta's Twitter competitor which is due to drop in June. While Meta doesn't have the best track record with copying competitors, this could be different...
If you're a Facebook advertiser, understand the nuance. There are so many factors that determine whether or not your ads are successful, and many of these factors are outside of your control. It's okay to say "It Depends."
Meta announced that the average ad price dropped for the fifth straight quarter, year-over-year. How is that possible? Here are five potential explanations...
It doesn't matter what your budget, industry, or product. This approach will work... Right??
I started my short-form video journey on October 1, 2022. Prior to that point, I mostly used Instagram as an ad placement. From that point forward, I've published more than 250 videos to Instagram Reels. Here's what happened...
I've had a YouTube channel since 2012, but I've been very inconsistent with it. While I recently surpassed 15,00 subscribers, much of that came during the first few years. Very little happened on my channel up until November. And then I started publishing my short-form videos there, too.
For the longest time, I would have agreed that it's a bad idea to try to be everywhere, and that you should focus on one or two platforms. That feeling changed with short-form video. Here's why...
You're bound to find yourself in a situation where you want to increase your budget. Unfortunately, it's entirely unclear how much you can increase it without ruining your results -- and Facebook's guidance on this is awful. Here's how you can approach it...
You start testing at a low budget. You get great results. Then you want to increase your budget, but you're afraid to make any changes that would restart the learning phase and impact those results. Maybe we're looking at this backward...
A really interesting thing happened recently. Someone who had never heard of me before, typed in a prompt to get a recommendation from ChatGPT for courses and resources to learn more about Facebook ads. The result was that it referred business to me. This marks a shift in how marketers look at ChatGPT and other answer engines powered by AI.
Jon just hit 100 days in a row publishing a video to start 2023, and he can feel this in his bones. This is the best way to make progress -- even if it isn't blatantly obvious from day-to-day or week-to-week.
If you struggle to maintain a productive daily routine, this is for you. I've struggled with this myself, but I've found a solution: Streaks.
If you're having issues with Meta spending your ads budget, it's often due to a restriction of the algorithm related to one of four things.
These are the things that I did to grow to 10,000 followers on TikTok in under six months. The number isn't everything, but it does matter.

Is there an ideal frequency for publishing short-form videos? Some have said 3-5 times. What does Jon do?
One of the biggest mistakes Facebook advertisers make is related to conversion rate. Here's an example of how not all clicks are created equal and how your overall conversion rate can make you do crazy things.
While the Audience Network placement has earned its bad reputation among Meta advertisers, there may be times when you should keep it on...
It's been popular lately to claim that Facebook remarketing is now dead. While certain types of remarketing (particularly general remarketing of all of your website visitors) may not be as effective or necessary as it once was, there are certain types of remarketing that are absolutely still useful. And if you aren't using them, you're missing an important opportunity.
You may have heard creators recommend reposting the same video multiple times on TikTok. I decided to try this out, and here's what happened...
Jon put off this episode for as long as he could. He discusses the three phases of procrastination that he has dealt with, and maybe it can help you.
I have the goal of publishing at least one video per day in 2023, and it has very little to do with strategy.
What is the best, easiest, and cheapest way to set up the Conversions API? The answer isn't that simple. How are you managing the pixel right now? Does that tool have a built-in solution? Do you want to continue using that tool?

How would AI-driven search engines (Answer engines) impact website content strategy? This is a question I've been asking myself as I consider the potential impact these search engines may have on organic referral traffic.
If you rely heavily on organic search referrals, you need to start asking this question. Your world may change very soon.
On one hand, we're in the midst of an AI renaissance. Facebook has the reputation of being on the cutting edge of automation, machine learning, and optimization. And yet, they still can't detect and deal with the most basic scams. Why?
Jon and Luke were joined at the Pub by Rachel Woods, founder of The AI Exchange (https://theaiexchange.com/). In addition to being an AI founder, Rachel is a must-follow on TikTok (The.Rachel.Woods), where she creates short videos that make the complex easier to understand.
In this episode, Rachel talks about...
2:06 Her background working for Meta 6:54 How she built her TikTok account quickly starting in November of 2022 11:22 How Rachel decided to work in AI while working in the wine industry 18:22 How AI can be used for automation 24:17 What she tells people who are afraid of their jobs getting replaced 30:17 What hasn't she automated yet that she wants to automate? 34:25 The importance of prompt engineering 42:54 Should we worry about privacy and sharing too much with AI? 48:10 What is the GPT Playground?
The future of AI is both exciting and scary. Some of the scary stuff is based on predictions, and we really don't know what's going to happen.
Seriously, I don't know. It's not my expertise.
But what absolutely is scary is the required change that is coming. We will need to change how we do business. How we consume content. Even how we live.
Everything is going to change super fast. And we don't know exactly what's going to change or how.
That's freaky.
We can prepare the best we can and put ourselves in the best possible situation. But the truth is that we are going to need to be flexible in the coming weeks, months, and years.
That's easier for some of us than others. I don't like change. Hell, I just hopped into video about eight years too late because of my resistance to change.
But the nice thing I can take from this is that it's change that we are all facing together. It won't be easy, but it will be easier as a group.
We can do this, y'all. I know we can.
It's okay to admit that you need a little bit of luck.
I don't mean that we don't deserve our success. But there's an element of being in the exact right place at the exact right time.
As I look back at the 11+ years in my business, I can't help but notice this. But I failed to appreciate it at the time.
I was laid off at the end of 2011. I wrote about Facebook ads -- not because I thought it was a smart topic (although it was), but because that's what I knew. I wrote a LOT because that's what I was good at and I didn't want to create videos. I had a soft-sell approach because I wasn't a marketer at heart.
All of this worked. It was the perfect time for all of this to work. It almost felt like it was set up for me to work. Not because it was some grand strategy of mine (it truly wasn't).
I'm not saying that I didn't work hard or that I SHOULDN'T have had success. I just realize now how the stars aligned for me.
The important lesson is that I took it for granted and maybe assumed that I did have some sort of magic touch, thinking that this approach worked then and would always work. It doesn't.
I had to evolve. I didn't (until recently). I'm now trying to catch back up.
Just remember that there are so many factors that contribute to your success, or lack thereof. Don't assume that what you've accomplished is some sort of blueprint that anyone could follow -- or even that you could follow again.
Along those lines, you might be doing everything right, but you just haven't had that break yet. It's easy to doubt yourself when that break hasn't come, that you're doing something wrong.
I'm getting more philosophical as my perspective grows longer in this journey. And this is something that has truly hit home lately.
What do you think?
In this episode, Jon and JR explore the contradictions related to the way many business partnerships start and why Jon struggles to form them.
I worked with ChatGPT to create a 60-second movie and then I recorded it.
Creating this script was a process. I asked ChatGPT some specific questions. I didn't like the initial results. I gave it more instruction.
It was a series of many prompts. It's important that you understand that this isn't as simple as telling it to write you a movie and it comes out the way you want it. You have an important role.
If you have anxiety about ChatGPT and AI making your job obsolete, allow me to talk you off of this ledge.
Is it scary? Yes. Absolutely. This technology is likely to be more impactful and disruptive than anything we've seen since the birth of the internet.
That's scary.
But think back to the advent of the internet. Think back to how business was done prior to that point. It was different. Was the internet scary? Yes!
Your clients suddenly had access to all of the information in the world. All they needed to do was use the internet or run a Google search. But they still hired you to do it for them because you were good at the internet.
AI is like this. It's going to make certain things much easier to do. Let's imagine, for example, that anyone could assemble an ads strategy or develop a website in a matter of minutes with the help of AI. Imagine how that changes things.
Well, your client may be able to do that. But so could all of their competitors. How are they going to separate themselves? How are they going to compete?
You will still be needed, assuming you don't stick your head in the sand and hope this technology goes away. It isn't going away.
How you are needed will change. But if you leverage the technology to make you better and more valuable at what you do, you will still be needed.
I fully admit that this is scary. The unknown makes me anxious, too. There's plenty of bad that could come from this technology. And the same can be said about the internet.
Try not to focus on doom and gloom hypotheticals. Get to know the technology. And understand how you can best leverage it.
That will put you so far ahead of most people, who will be reactive and struggle to catch up.
Jon and Luke discuss the potential impact and use cases of ChatGPT and AI during this incredible time of discovery, innovation, and change.
Much of the criticism and skepticism in reaction to ChatGPT and AI is misplaced due to a misunderstanding of its value and purpose. Let's shed some light on how you should look at it...
This is a question I get a lot. Should you update your creative every couple of weeks? Every month? How can you avoid ad creative fatigue? There are three factors to consider.
The most common question I get these days is how I edit my videos. In some cases, I think the question is misguided. But I explain what I do here...
If you're an entrepreneur, this is a critical time of the year. Start 2023 by doing these five things.
You should have revenue and KPI goals. But first, you need to establish content marketing production goals. If you accomplish them, you'll be more likely to reach those KPI goals.

Here's how to create a powerful video funnel with Facebook ads.
Publish videos regularly to Facebook and Instagram. I'm publishing one or two Reels per day.
Create an audience of anyone who watched 95% of any of your videos during the past 7 days. You'll need to update this audience every time you publish a new video.
Target this group with another video. I use an Awareness campaign with Reach optimization because this is a small group, but use what you're comfortable with.
Create a custom audience of those who watched 95% of THAT video during the past 21 days or so. These people watched at least one video to completion during the past 7 days AND this video. They are clearly engaged.
Target this group to promote your product. Once again, I use Reach, but use what you want.
Feel free to try it out!
The content creation graveyard is littered with creators who started and gave up. The beginning is the hardest part. This is how you can approach short-form video with the right frame of mind...
Some of the conversions that Facebook reports in Ads Manager never required someone to click on your ad. Here are two examples.
If someone shares your ad and the person you did not pay to reach converts, Facebook will not report it. They could, but they don't. Likewise, if you have the pixel and conversion events on your website, Facebook knows if someone who engaged with your organic post converted. Facebook could highlight that, too. So, why don't they?
One of the most common sources of confusion among advertisers is a misunderstanding of how Facebook credits an ad for a conversion. Here's a quick explanation of how that works.
A successful 2023 starts with a plan. A plan requires prioritization and grouping of similar tasks by day to be as focused as possible. Here's how you can approach it...

There are a couple of updates Facebook advertisers desperately need that could drastically improve the quality and effectiveness of video views audiences.
Should you go completely broad with your Facebook ads targeting? No interests, no lookalike audiences, nothing? The strategy actually has some merit, but only for certain circumstances.
The frustrating part about short-form video is that it's not always evident that you're making an impact. If you create videos the way I do, you will rarely see direct ROI. But I was given two powerful examples recently of the impact that these videos are making.
There are countless factors that contribute to the performance of your ads -- some that you can control and some you can't. Here are 20 in under 60 seconds...
The Audience Expansion products should work, in theory. But there's one underlying problem with how they work now. And that problem could easily be solved with the addition of a very basic feature.
If you're new to TikTok, you're not ready to create ads yet. Take a step back and go through this process first...
You cannot assume that all platforms are the same. Your goals can change because people on some platforms consume content differently. Here's what I learned...
As we head into Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the holiday shopping season generally, know that this time isn't ideal for every brand. It's possible you should consider pulling back on ads by either lowering your budget or pausing for now.
Traffic and engagement campaigns for Facebook advertising are mostly unusable. But that could instantly change if Facebook made this one option available...
You can have Facebook optimize for a high Return on Ad Spend rather than focusing on the volume of purchases. Here's how that works...
Jon is suddenly hyper-focused on creating TikTok ads-related content. Why is that? Is he abandoning Facebook? Let's get straight to the point...
The algorithm is powerful. It can do things quickly and automatically that is simply not possible to do manually. But there are times when this powerful algorithm can work against you.
Not every marketing effort needs to have the goal of making money. In fact, there are times when you should create content with the explicit purpose of providing value while expecting nothing in return. Here's why...
How do you establish your campaign budget? Don't guess. Here's a simple formula to get you thinking about the ideal amount to accomplish your goals.
If you're a slow-talker who fumbles your words and struggles to get to the point (not mentioning any names here), short-form video can seem especially intimidating. You can actually do it without changing yourself or adding pressure to keep a recording concise and clean. Here's how...

Custom metrics can be hugely valuable when the basic metrics provided in Ads Manager are ineffective at telling a complete story. You've likely seen a new feature that allows you to make up to three different creative optimizations of your Facebook ad. This isn't scary. It's Advantage+ Creative, and here's how it works...
If you sell a product on Amazon or another third-party site, the struggle is real with advertising. You can't remarket to people who clicked on your ad. Your optimization options aren't ideal.
But, Meta has something they could do that, while it wouldn't solve every problem for this group, it would make things better. I explain on this episode.

This episode is going to be a little (or a lot) different than most. Not about Facebook ads. This is about balancing the million and one things you're doing both in and outside of work. It's about the guilt and shame of not doing it all. And it's about forgiveness and being kind to yourself...
Meta announced several new features that are either being tested or coming soon to your lead forms. While not a ton of details were provided, there is plenty that we can talk about...
Meta announced a bunch of new features recently related to messaging and lead generation. One that got my attention was the ability to send marketing messages to people who opt-in via Messenger in Meta Business Suite. This could be really interesting...
One of the most common refrains from marketers when a feature gets taken away or a platform gets shut down is "This is why you don't build your house on rented land!" While there's certainly some thread of truth here, it's a phrase that is so misused and overused that it loses all meaning. Here's a rant...
While you can make use of the Search placement, wouldn't it be nice to be able to bid against certain search terms when people use Facebook search?
The truth is that this existed at one time, but it was a buried template that most advertisers never knew about it. But, it would be so helpful if this was brought back in some way. Let me explain...
I've complained a lot during the past year about how little advertisers know about how much their targeting audience was expanded or how many results came from the expansion of their audience when Detailed Targeting Expansion or Lookalike Expansion is on. But, what if Meta added an Expansion option to the current Breakdowns feature that allowed you to break down your results and view separate rows for your targeted audience and the expanded audience?
Previously, we discussed the need for some sort of frequency control lever when optimizing for something other than Reach. But, there could be another option that would involve creating custom audiences based on people who have seen a specific ad. This could then be used for frequency control (exclusions) and campaign planning.
One of the issues advertisers struggle with most is controlling frequency. Currently, the only way to set a frequency cap within the Auction buying type is with Reach optimization. While there's surely a reason for this, it sure would be nice to have some sort of control over frequency using other optimization options.
Facebook Podcasts still haven't been fully rolled out, and there are rumors that Meta may change course on its investment. But, the addition of a few advertising options could make Facebook Podcasting an amazing opportunity.
Right now, you can target people who have viewed your videos for a certain amount of time. And optimization can focus on those who watched at least 15 seconds of your videos. But, both targeting and optimization would improve if Meta included some very important options.
Imagine you could target all people who followed your page during the past 30 days. Maybe send them a special message or invite them to subscribe to something. That may be valuable, right? You can't do it right now.
You can use Page Engagement Audiences to target anyone who has engaged with your page or anyone who has engaged with your page's posts or ads. But, what if we could add some granularity to that targeting?
Can you imagine if Meta offered standard events for actions that reflect quality website traffic? You could then optimize for and measure quality traffic actions like viewing two pages in a session, spending at least a minute on your page, or returning for a second session. You could then even target people based on these actions.
This one enhancement would drastically change my advertising, and maybe yours. Right now, the focus is to get you the most link clicks, landing page views, or engagement at the lowest cost. But, what if you could instead optimize for quality actions that have more value?
I'm not the only one who wants this, right? Meta undoubtedly has this information. Why can't we see how many conversions resulted from someone seeing or clicking our post or ad, regardless of whether we paid to reach them? There would be some helpful ways to do this...
A week ago, I published my 150th episode in 150 days. As difficult as it was to stop, it was time. I learned a ton from those 150 episodes, and now I'm going to pivot off of what I learned. Here's what to expect in the next phase...

Lately, I've started realizing more and more posts from pages that I don't follow -- that aren't ads -- in my news feed. I decided to dig deeper and perform a little experiment. Here's how my news feed breaks down and what we can learn from it...
I've actually talked before about two of the primary benefits of getting your domain verified related to Facebook ads and posts, but there are actually several more reasons to get this process completed.
I get it. There are seemingly limitless options and features when running a Facebook ads campaign. Where do you start? How do you set up your campaign? What metrics do you care about? Keep it simple...
First there was Detailed Targeting Expansion. Then Lookalike Expansion. It looks like Facebook is also considering Custom Audience Expansion. At least, I can tell you my ad account has been selected for a study to test just that.
I decided to do a Pubcast version of my 5 Facebook Ads Tips webinar, and oh... there's a story here.
Questions were raised recently about the accuracy of Facebook interests used for targeting, thanks to a NCSU study. You may start asking those questions yourself if you dig into your ad preferences to see some of the ways that advertisers can target you.
Researchers in a recent North Carolina State University study found that more than 30% of the interests Facebook connected to a user, which could be used for targeting, were inaccurate or irrelevant. In many cases, it was because the process that led Facebook to infer an interest lacked important context.
There's a ton going on in the world of Facebook and Meta advertising, so how do you stay on top of it all? There are three main things that I recommend.
There are plenty of good business reasons for merging Facebook business pages. There are also several obstacles to doing it. Some of these you can correct and some you can't.
Facebook is going to start punishing video posts that utilize "watchbait" by withholding important information, using sensationalized language, and misleading the viewer. So, why am I skeptical?
Do you use the word 'Meta' when referring to the family of apps related to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger? I've had a bit of a personal protest against the change. Here's my old man rant on why it's been so hard for me to say 'Meta.'
Earlier, I published a Shot about the basics of Meta Advantage. But, this topic deserves more attention. Here, I dig into precisely what this means -- not only now, but potentially for the future. And I have my concerns.
How much should you spend on Facebook ads? I get asked this a lot. There isn't a simple answer, but there are several factors to consider when determining how much you need to spend to get the results you want.
Facebook (or Meta) just announced that it is renaming its ad automation tools Meta Advantage. Does that mean new features and functionality are coming? What does it mean for the future of advertising optimization and automation?
One of the biggest challenges Facebook advertisers face is scaling. You can get great initial results, but either they don't last or everything collapses when you increase the budget. There are four strategies to try, depending on your business, to effectively scale.
Within custom Facebook ad reports, you can choose to have regular emails sent (daily, weekly, or monthly) with your saved report to specific members of your team. Here's how...
I've long complained about how Facebook removed the Compare Attribution feature from Ads Manager during the iOS 14+ changes of 2021. Well, it turns out that a workaround still exists -- though it's strangely buried in a way that makes little sense.
If you ever want to figure out the best creative, audience, optimization, placement, or strategy to use, a good option is Facebook's built-in A/B Test feature. Here's how it works...
Facebook is rolling out a new ads creative optimization feature called Dynamic Experiences. Here's how it works and what you need to know...
Facebook/Meta is really bad at naming stuff. There are several ad creative optimization features that have similar names or function in close to the same way. It's no wonder they're easily confused. I try to clear it up in this episode.
Web events are critical to conversion reporting, optimization, and website retargeting. Here's an introduction to how it works and what you need to know.

Facebook lead ads have been around for a LONG time. While I don't use them exclusively for lead collection, they should be a part of every advertiser's toolbox. Here's a closer look at their advantages and disadvantages.
Multiple Text Options is a great feature to use when you aren't sure of the best text to use in the primary text, headline, and link description fields. But, there are some things to consider first.
Call extension ads are different from your typical call ads, which start a phone call as soon as you click them in the news feed. Instead, a call extension ad looks like a link ad. When clicked, it loads a page of your website. But, there's a persistent "Call" button at the bottom of the page from a mobile device. Here's how to create them...
Facebook added an option when using Dynamic Creative called Optimize Creative For Each Person. This is actually a pretty big enhancement that allows Facebook to make major edits to your ads if it's believed that a user will respond favorably to them. Check it out...
Dynamic Creative is a nice option that helps you find the best combination of assets to get you, in theory, the best possible results. But, how do you view the best performing combinations?
A consistent, motivated approach to content creation needs a spark, however small. Don't worry about perfection. Start somewhere. Create. Here's how that happened for me...
Instead of creating multiple ads or running a split test, you may instead want to turn on Dynamic Creative. Here's how it works and some things to consider...
Audience fragmentation can become an issue when running multiple ad sets with different audiences that promote ads with similar creative and setup. The result can be less efficiency with your ad spend. Luckily, you can manage this with Automated Rules.
If you advertise for clients, you surely need to get approval on ad creative before ads can go live. There are two primary ways to do this.
Back in 2021, the Attribution Setting was born. This new unified setting took the place of the Conversion Window and Attribution Window from the pre-iOS world. This works differently than it did before, and it's important to understand how this impacts your advertising.
We know that website custom audiences will shrink due to iOS opt-outs. What we don't know, because Facebook never makes it clear, is to what extent this is the case. Not to mention, they never address specific scenarios that could create loopholes or confusion related to these opt-outs.
Most advertisers understand the importance of domain verification since the rollout of iOS 14+ changes in 2021. But there is actually another reason to claim ownership of your website beyond the benefits of configuring your web events.
Oh, this was fun. In this episode of The Pubcast, I take a trip down memory lane and remember some of the things that you may have forgotten about Facebook, Facebook marketing, and Facebook ads from as long as a decade ago. Remember That??
If you've spent any time in Events Manager, you've surely received notifications from Facebook related to unrecognized domains sending events from your pixel. You can control this using a setting called Traffic Permissions.
If you've run any video ads at all, you're undoubtedly familiar with auto-play. This can be good and bad, but it ultimately complicates reporting. You're going to get a whole lot of video plays, but you lose some context on the quality of those views. You can get this back with Breakdowns by Action, which allow you to separate actions with sound on and off as well as from auto-play or clicked-to-play.
Advanced Matching is a little thing that can provide incremental improvements to your conversion attribution, optimization, and targeting. Here's what you need to know...
Automatic Events can help you set up those pesky standard events automatically (hence the name) without code. Here's how to turn them on...
Facebook has started rolling out custom formatting for ad reports, and it could be super helpful. Here's how to find out whether you have it, how it might be used, and my one big issue with it.
The ad auction is what determines who sees an ad. How do you win an auction? Your ad needs to have the highest total score, which is based on three different factors. Let's discuss...
On November 10, I published a podcast episode. I had no idea what I was starting. I'd end up going on a streak of publishing a new episode every day for 100 days (and counting).
It's kinda crazy. In this episode, I crack a bottle of red and talk about how I organized myself to do this, the different methods of tracking, how it's impacted my content development strategy, and where it's going next.
Some advertisers have seen the Advantage Plus campaign creation method when setting up a conversions campaign in Ads Manager. It's actually been rolling out very slowly for the past several months. Is this a big deal? Does it offer significant benefits? Let's break down what we know...
The big spenders can make the most impact, but that doesn't mean that you can't drive results on a budget. But, with those restrictions, you can't follow the same rules. You should have three priorities for how you spend that budget...
The Pixel Event Setup Tool is a great concept. Add standard events to your website without the need for code. Unfortunately, it remains as flawed and limited today as the day it was released a few years ago. That doesn't make it completely worthless, though. Here are a few cases you should use it.
One of the primary ways that you can create a website custom audience is based on specific page or website. There are actually several different ways I use this within my advertising strategy.
Custom Conversions have a very specific purpose for Facebook ads reporting and optimization. Here, I provide an explanation of the three primary ways that I use them.
The Facebook Pixel Helper is an extension for the Chrome browser. It's a great, and free, tool for advertisers. Here, I lay out ways that you might use it.
View-through conversions have always been a thing. But changes during the past year have made them problematic. Let me explain what I was doing, what I found, my theory, and what I think Facebook should do related to view-through attribution.
Do you understand how custom conversions are different from standard and custom events and how you might use them? Let's clear up any confusion...
Have you ever run into a situation where Facebook isn't providing metric totals for conversions even though the rows above have data? This isn't a bug, there's a reason for it. Here's the explanation...
Businesses who haven't been able to verify their domains because their pixel was on a third-party website may have a solution due to Partner Level Configurations. This is a big deal!
If you use standard or custom events, you should also be sending parameters that provide more details about an action. Parameters are what provide granularity and power in reporting and targeting. Here's how they work...
Conversion numbers in Ads Manager rarely match up with other sources. One of the many reasons for this is view-through conversions. Here, I talk about what they are, when they might happen, and why they've been controversial.
You can now create custom audiences based on engagement with your product catalog. There are a couple of primary benefits to this over a typical website custom audience that should be useful for ecomm businesses.
Three months ago (on November 6, to be exact), I started an experiment. I wanted to see if I could reach all of my Facebook followers with a single ad. In this episode, I walk through what happened -- including some seriously weird and unexpected things -- and what I learned from it.
If you're only looking at surface-level metrics to measure the success of your ads, you aren't doing your job. You need to dig deeper. Ask these basic questions to help define what success looks like and what your ultimate customer looks like so that you can reach them.
If you're using both browser events from your pixel and server events from the API, you are probably sending the same events for each. This way, the API may pick up some events that the browser pixel does not. Of course, it's then important that Facebook runs a deduplication process to eliminate duplicates and prevent double-counting. Here, I walk through how to view your deduplication rate...
While cold, broad targeting is becoming increasingly popular, I still find warm targeting to be incredibly effective and important. This is especially the case for content creators like me, who attract website visitors to engage with free content. I then need to separate those levels of engagement to re-engage them or present a relevant product or opt-in. Here's exactly what I do...
Do you use custom web events to track, optimize for, and target actions that fall outside of standard events? I do! Here, I walk through the various events that fire on my website to help represent quality traffic, video engagement, and podcast engagement. I even explain how you can test my events!
Maybe you use your own formulas to determine the performance of your Facebook ads. You can actually use these formulas to create custom metrics that can be added as columns to your reports. Here's how!
Back in November, Facebook announced that they'd be removing some Detailed Targeting options. Now that those options were removed in January, we now know they weren't messing around. They removed a TON of targeting options, including ones that came as a surprise. So, now what should you do?
I've been experimenting with a new Facebook ads strategy that I'm really excited about. It remains unfinished as there are still things I'm trying to polish and fix. But, there's a specific need I'm trying to fill, and I can visualize exactly how it would work. Talk through this with me...
Facebook ads optimization is seriously lacking for content creators -- specifically for bloggers. Optimizing for Link Clicks or Landing Page Views doesn't cut it because Facebook doesn't care about the quality of those actions. Content creators do! Here's what Facebook should do...
Facebook is requiring advertisers to indicate that they have read and accepted terms related to non-discrimination, not only in regards to their advertising but on behalf of system users. If you don't, you won't be able to create ads.
Have you ever had results for a traffic campaign that seemed too good to be true? This is certainly possible, due to how optimization works. Here are some steps to take so that you can verify the quality of those clicks.
You may already manage Auction Overlap manually, but you can actually allow Facebook to manage this using Automated Rules. There are three ways that you can do this.
If you've been around me long enough, you've heard me talk about evergreen campaigns. These are campaigns that never go stale. They aren't magical, but it's all due to how they're set up that allows them to work this way.
Automated Rules are a great tool to automate and simplify the ads management process that is otherwise manual. Let's walk through how these are set up and some things to consider.
This isn't your typical advertiser brag about too-good-to-be-true results. It may be the opposite. Consider it a cautionary tale about how you should look beyond surface-level results. About how you should establish expectations based on data and know what to look for. This is a fun one. Enjoy!
Advertisers have been conditioned to believe that they shouldn't use text in ad images. The truth is that this rule was removed in September of 2020. No 20-percent rule. No scale. No throttling on images with more text. Use text if you want!
If you run Instant Experience ads, make sure that you don't use the default metrics or saved reports. There are metrics specific to Instant Experience that are available if you customize columns. But a question: Why can't you create targeting audiences based on most of these?
One of the classic ways to target people who have been exposed to you before is with Facebook Page Engagement Custom Audiences. Here, we talk about what they are, issues with them, and ways you might use them.
A useful targeting tool that anyone can use as long as you have the pixel set up on your website is the Time on Website Custom Audience. Here, I discuss what these are, how they work, and things you should think about before you use them.
You may know that I'm a big fan of Reach optimization. It's not magical, but it's a great tool for specific situations. Here, I explain how Reach optimization works, how you might use it, and examples of how I use it.
Attribution is how Facebook gives credit for a conversion to an ad. Advertisers are often confused regarding how this works, and it's also connected to why numbers don't line up with Google Analytics. Let's clear up this and other misconceptions.
It's episode 400! In this episode, I discuss the impact of my podcasting test 60 days after it started. Not only is it clear that this method can be applied to other platforms, but I fully plan on doing so once this test ends.
Facebook says that you will get your best results after exiting the Learning Phase. The problem is that if you make any "significant" edits after that point, your ad set will re-enter the Learning Phase. The great results you were getting may not come back. What's significant and what's not? Let's investigate...
One of my favorite features in Ads Manager is Breakdown, and it isn't utilized nearly enough by most advertisers. It easily allows you to segment results without having to segment the ad set targeting or placement itself.
Have you ever tried to create a new ad account but ran into an error that you had reached your Ad Account Creation Maximum? Everyone has a limit, and here I discuss what goes into that limit, how you can find yours, and what you might be able to do about it.
An old-school optimization option for Facebook advertisers wanting to control frequency is Daily Unique Reach. It works differently than Reach optimization with Frequency Capping. I discuss it in today's Shot.
Facebook is simplifying the objective selection process in Ads Manager, consolidating from 11 objectives to 6. It falls under the Outcome-Based Ad Experiences (ODAX) initiative. Here's what you need to know.

If you're like me, you create custom reports in Ads Manager instead of sticking with the default columns. If so, there's something you should keep in mind.
Jon and JR discuss the act of showing up, both in business and personal life. Why it's hard, how to approach it, and why there are benefits.
I love using Reach Optimization with Frequency Capping. But something you should be aware of is that Facebook doesn't always maintain a strict cap. You can monitor and control this, to a point.
There's a big group of brands that advertise only during the holidays, and they're stopping now. Don't be one of these brands. This is the time -- outside of the holidays -- that you're most likely to get better results. And if you advertise all year, your efforts can help make your advertising more effective once you get to the holidays.
What frequency is too high? Can frequency be too low? How should you manage it? We explore in today's Shot...
If you've run Facebook ads, you've undoubtedly run into the Learning Phase before. Let's talk about what it is and how you should approach it.
In this Shot, you'll get a better understanding of the differences between Clicks (All), Link Clicks, Outbound Clicks, and Landing Page Views. Not all clicks are the same!
If your focus is on Return on Ad Spend over volume, you should consider using the Minimum ROAS bid strategy when optimizing for volume. Here's how, and some things to consider.
"If you build it, they will come" doesn't work. You need to be on multiple channels. And what you do on those channels needs to work in unison. In this episode, I talk about what I'm doing and how you can apply it to your own strategy.
We've all been there. Your Facebook ad is stuck in review. You're up against a deadline. What do you do? There are four steps that you can take.
If you haven't already, you need to get your business verified. Don't wait until Facebook requires it. Here's why and how you'll do it.
Do you know when to use the Cost Cap bid strategy? Let's talk through what it's for, how it works, and an example of how you might use it.
Facebook has a buried feature that allows you to Optimize Text Per Person. It's not the Multiple Text Options or Dynamic Creative. This is different. Here's what it is and how it can be used...
All placements are different. Requirements are different. Performance and costs are different. Should you use automatic placements (which Facebook recommends), or manual placements? And if you use manual placements, which ones? Let's explore...
If you've received a warning from Facebook that one or more of your ad accounts is in violation of Item 5 of "Things You Should Know" in Facebook advertising policies, you're not alone. Here's what that means and what you should do about it.
There are nine things that I do that, by themselves, may not move the needle. But, together, they make for a comprehensive strategy to help drive growth of my podcast. I walk through those steps here...
Auction Overlap can lead to poorly performing ads. Here, explain why, how you can detect Auction Overlap, and what you should do about it.
Not to be confused with Targeting Expansion, Lookalike Expansion could also take some guesswork out of Lookalike Audience creation -- assuming it works as Facebook says. Listen for details on how it works, how you might use it, and how it's different from Targeting Expansion.
How Targeting Expansion works is mostly misunderstood by advertisers. In theory, Targeting Expansion should only work as a benefit. Here's an explanation of why, along with some problems.
Do you turn Campaign Budget Optimization on when you advertise on Facebook? Here's what you need to know about how it works and some things to consider.
As we know, the pixel will become less and less effective due to iOS 14 and browser restrictions. It doesn't mean you should stop sending people to your website -- that's crazy! -- but you should be taking advantage of the audiences that aren't impacted.
A bit of a diversion from your typical Facebook ads or business tip, here's my Christmas message to you...
If you are a proud member of the Hustle Culture, this message is not for you. Otherwise, this is my story, how it impacted my outlook on Hustle Culture, and how you can start constructing your ideal lifestyle.
Now, more than ever before, you should include Facebook lead ads as part of your strategy. Here's why...
Do you use URL parameters with the links you promote in your Facebook ads? You should! They can help uncover conversions that Ads Manager can't, which may completely change your impression of the ad.
It's important that you pick a client who sets you up for success. A client who puts you into a position to succeed before you start. And a client who will trust you to do your job. The wrong client can set you up for failure.
As an advertiser, it's important to understand what's in and outside of your control. Don't be distracted by the things you can't do anything about. Focus only on those things that you impact.
Ads get rejected, sometimes by mistake. But it's important that you know and follow the rules. Some are obvious and some aren't. Don't try to bend or get around the rules. Nothing is worse than disruption to your business or a client's business, whether it be a rejected ad or -- the worst-case scenario -- a banned account.
Possibly the most important advice I could give an inexperienced advertiser is to experiment often. Here's why...
I just completed a 30-day test with my podcast, publishing a different episode every single day. In this episode, I break down the results. Was it worth it? (You're dang right, it was...)
We know that not all customers are the same, just like not all website visitors are the same. You can actually isolate your highest quality customers by frequency when you create a website custom audience. Here's how...
When you run a conversions campaign, you could have Facebook show your ads to people most likely to convert. Or, you could should your ad to people most likely to lead to maximum purchase value and the highest Return on Ad Spend. Here's how...
You may have heard about my experiment, a challenge to reach all -- or as many -- my followers with an ad as I could. This is the latest on how that's unfolding.
If your audience is high-volume iOS, you should be very careful about the reporting window you use. Here's why...
Have you ever struggled with lead quality when running Facebook Lead Ads? You can change that by optimizing for Conversion Leads. That way, Facebook will show your ads to people most likely to convert into a sale AFTER the lead. Listen for details!
The Conversions API, used with the Facebook pixel, can provide a fuller picture of conversions. Here's my quick explanation of what the Conversions API is, how it helps, and why you need it.
I've learned the importance of goal-setting and planning, and I'm going big for 2022. Here's a collection of my goals for the upcoming year, and how I plan to accomplish them.
Have you ever noticed a strange, seemingly coincidental spike in traffic immediately after you publish a Facebook ad? It's no coincidence. That spike is due to ad review bots.
Do you suspect that Facebook is underreporting your results? It's possible, whether it be due to iOS 14+ or the shortened 7-day click attribution window. There is something you can do to increase your confidence in the full impact of your advertising effort.
I admit it, I'm obsessed with Reach optimization. I always have been. It doesn't mean that I don't optimize for conversions or target broader audiences, too, but I love the creative things that I can do with it -- and the challenges that come along with tiny audiences.
I've been using Google Tag Manager to manage my Facebook pixel for the last year or two, and I wish I would've started doing it sooner. This Shot explains why.
A common complaint among advertisers lately is that since iOS 14 changes, Facebook's reported conversions are incomplete and inaccurate. One solution may be optimizing for non-prioritized events.
I have a saved report in my Ads Manager for "The Good Stuff" -- the metrics that matter most to me. These are those 30 metrics. What metrics are in your saved report?
In this Pubcast, I talk about the realization of the mistakes I've made and seeing the impact of some of my decisions (some I don't regret, some I do) reflected now. And then how energized I am with a plan for 2022. Pop a bottle!
Website custom audiences may become smaller and less effective with time due to iOS 14 and opt-outs. But there are so many targeting options Facebook could provide that wouldn't be impacted. And they'd be awesome.
Advertisers during this time of year need to understand that their conversion rates can remain the same as what they've been all year, but Cost Per Conversion may increase drastically. That's due largely to seasonality, competition, and the impact on CPM.
My most common answer to people who ask about the quality of metrics and whether a result is good or bad is "It Depends." There are so many factors that create the context to properly evaluate performance.
If you optimize for link clicks or landing page views, Facebook doesn't care about the quality of those clicks or visits. They only care that the event happened. But, you can change actually force Facebook to optimize for quality traffic.
If you're targeting and optimizing properly, you don't even need to optimize for a purchase or promote content that sells a product. You'll reach the right people who want to purchase.
When you optimize for an action, Facebook will show your ad to people with the goal of getting you the most actions for the lowest cost. That's not always a good thing.
In a special Thanksgiving-ish episode, Jon sits down with John Robinson to reflect on the year, the struggles, the inspiration, and planning for good.
Whether you are celebrating Thanksgiving in the US or not, it's a good time to think about gratitude. Who and what are you grateful for? Who are the people who have made what you do possible, who make your life better?
Back in 2013 - 14, The Pubcast was a huge part of my business. Somewhere along the line, that changed. But for a few reasons, I wanted to take another shot at it. But it can't be a weak attempt. I have a plan. In this Shot, I break down what I'm doing and what I hope to accomplish.
On October 22nd, I created a campaign that was meant to reward and incentivize engagement with my website. We're reaching the end of it now, and I wanted to provide an update on what I've seen and what I've learned so far that I can apply elsewhere.
A couple of weeks ago, I started an experiment where I wanted to see if I could create a campaign that could reach most of my Facebook followers. I was curious how long it would take, how much it would cost, whether it was possible, and how Facebook would determine whom to reach first. This is an update of what I'm seeing so far...
I'll admit it: I have a problem when it comes to an obsession with numbers. Especially when I've recently launched a campaign. Check. Refresh. Come back. Refresh again. Am I the only one?
I know that well-meaning advertisers can get ads rejected and get ad accounts shut down for seemingly no reason. This message is not for you. Make sure to subscribe so you'll be notified of future episodes!
I've been experimenting with podcasting on Facebook for a few weeks now, and I've gotta say that I'm bullish. I don't get excited about much. But even though it's still very new and Facebook has barely scratched the surface related to what they CAN do with podcasting, the future looks bright. In this episode, I break down what podcasting on Facebook is, why it's impactful, my experience so far, and the exciting places this could go.
I use a Facebook ads funnel to drive traffic, build my email list, and increase sales. In this Shot, I break down the mechanics.
It absolutely baffles me that Facebook doesn't do more to inform marketers and advertisers of organic conversions. They have the information. It wouldn't be hard to surface it. And this information could significantly impact our overall impressions of a post or ad. More on today's Shot!
One of the most frustrating changes for advertisers related to iOS 14 is the removal of the "Compare Windows" feature and unification of an Attribution Setting. I explain in today's Shot!
We hear a lot about the negative impact of changes related to iOS 14 to Facebook advertisers. Some of them are real and some are imagined. But the biggest change is one that we don't talk enough about.
If you're running website remarketing ads, you may actually mostly avoid much of the iOS frustration related to reporting -- modeling and the Aggregated Event Measurement. There may be one loophole, but even that should be limited in volume. Facebook, of course, isn't clear on how that potential loophole is handled. Details in today's Shot!
Effective January 19, 2022, Facebook will be removing thousands of interest targeting options related to health causes, sexual orientation, religious practices and groups, political beliefs, social issues, and more. I provide the details and my thoughts in this Shot!
Okay, maybe the question isn't just CAN you, but SHOULD you? The question inspired me to try. In this episode, I breakdown what my approach was and the truly interesting results I'm seeing so far. I'm learning some things that I will likely apply to other campaigns later. Take a listen!
Today's Pubcast Shot answers a question from Samantha Shaler. Pubcast Shots are short, bite-sized bits for when you're on the run. To submit your own question, send it to info@jonloomer.com (with the subject: Pubcast Shot Question) or send a message to my Facebook page.
I was asked recently what my predictions were for Facebook advertising for 2022, and this was my answer. Pubcast Shots are short, bite-sized bits for when you're on the run.
I was wrong. While I felt Facebook's algorithm made sense initially YEARS AGO and had the potential to be used for good, I was wrong. Facebook has had plenty of time to tweak and adjust and make it right. They've instead taken intentional steps that underline their own greed. Pop a bottle...
Ooooooh, baby! Big announcement today as the "Facebook" parent company name is now "Meta." Does it matter? What does it mean? Listen to my thoughts and read my blog post here: https://www.jonloomer.com/facebook-is-meta/
This was difficult to record. I've kept my struggles largely to myself. But in this episode, I discuss how the pandemic impacted me personally and ultimately my business. We love celebrating the big accomplishments. But it's important to talk about the downturns, too. Hopefully this is something that others can relate to. You aren't alone.
In this episode, I discuss the potential pitfalls of Facebook ads optimization, how it can lead to misleading results and watered-down custom audiences. I also give you a roadmap to deal with it to help maximize the advantages of optimization.

As we continue to reflect on my first 10 years in business, it's important to acknowledge many of the struggles I've faced, particularly during the most recent five. There are unique challenges I was not prepared for, and many of the struggles I faced were self-inflicted if not partly by design. Pop a bottle...
During the third year of my business, traffic exploded. I found monthly recurring revenue and I tackled my fear of public speaking. This is that story...
To continue this series about my first 10 years in business, I take a look at Year 2 -- a pivotal and active year in every respect. I wrote 277 blog posts this year, finding a niche in advanced Facebook marketing and advertising. I started interviewing industry experts, hosting a podcast, and launching products. It was a big, big year. Pop a bottle, and enjoy the story!
In this video, I explore months 8-12 of my first year in business. It was when I finally started seeing consistent traffic (I published 134 posts during that stretch). While I had yet to create a product, I explore my early learnings from starting a podcast and initial methods of driving revenue.
This episode is the third in a series that explores how Jon's business came to be, through the ups and downs. It all began 10 years ago, following a layoff. In this episode, Jon talks about one of the most critical periods of time in his business. He made mistakes and learned from them. This is the story...
This is the second in a series where Jon reflects on building his business, 10 years later. In this episode, Jon goes through what he did during the first month after he was laid off. He started a website... And it didn't quite go the way you'd expect!
Jon recently celebrated 10 years since he was laid off (for the second time). While his business wasn't technically born on that day, he hasn't collected a paycheck from an employer since then. In this episode, he reflects on what was happening during that first 10 days: What he thought he wanted, what he was doing, and what he was feeling.
The iOS 14 changes related to Facebook ads are finally being enforced. What do you need to know? We cover it in this episode.

You may want to get access to or share access for a custom conversion. This is likely to become a bigger issue related to iOS 14 and Aggregated Event Measurement. How custom conversions are shared will depend first on how they are created.

Preparing to Speak - I am not a seasoned public speaker. It makes me nervous. I have long had a fear of it. But I am learning to enjoy it. It all comes down to preparation. - DON’T WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE (or at least the VERY LAST minute) - Pick a topic you have talked about before and are passionate about. - Break it down into a pain, a story and a solution. - Create an outline first and slides second. - Ask the audience questions. Get them involved. - Plan everything but also plan for spontaneity - Limit the text on each slide. Use slides as a guide to keep you on track, not as the entire content. - SOMEONE SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE SLIDES AND NO EXACTLY WHAT YOU SPOKE ABOUT! - Do something fun, entertaining or unexpected. - Write and re-write. Practice by yourself and for someone else. And edit again. Time it. On SMMW 15 - So awesome. - Everyone going to be there. - This time I’m going to have friends with me — RECOMMENDED for shy, antisocial types! - Go to stuff, but don’t feel like you need to go to everything! - BE SOCIAL! - Have a plan! - Planning on quick “Pubcast” style interviews. - No real expectations, except that I expect to enjoy myself! On Vacations, Relaxing and LETTING GO - I’m going to get as much work done as I can before leaving - I’m going to do as little work as I can when I’m there - Seeing the sights with my family - Not going to be cooped up in a room - I will do less. Something will slip. And it will be OKAY. - It’s also why I have a team. My business will not implode. - If you don’t have a team now, work towards having one — or work towards having some sort of backup plan when you’re away — so you can enjoy it! On how you must be motivated by more than money - Baseball season - Every decision I make is with this time of year in mind (partnerships, public speaking, traveling, commitments) - You must decide what motivates you. Envision what you desire and envision the motivation — the big way — and allow it to guide you. - This weekend, my boys’ baseball seasons officially get under way. And our lives are about to get crazy. - I work from home because of this time of year. - I started my own business because of this time of year. - I rarely travel because of this time of year. - I have created a scalable business that requires less of my time, less maintenance, less production because of this time of the year. On creating an environment that is perfect for production - I have a cluttered desk. - I share an office with my family. - The office has a glass door and sits immediately outside the entryway to the house from the garage. - New office is downstairs, away from everyone. - New office will combine video studio, audio studio and writing/production. - New office will have one big, empty white wall for recording, carpet for sound absorption. - New office will have a standing desk, beanbag chair and treadmill. - New office will be DECLUTTERED and have only what I need to be productive. - It doesn’t mean designing a new room. But create a space for production, free of distractions.

My Journey * I don’t have any regrets * I could have done things differently, but I didn’t — part of the journey * Looking back, I wish I was more willing to invest early * Looking back, I’m glad that I read A LOT to research what I needed to do, but you can put too much stock in the opinions of others. TRUST YOUR GUT! * Looking back, I wish I would have started an email list immediately, found my right niche immediately and did a lot of these things. * I didn’t, and that’s okay!
1) Determine an Initial Niche (this can change!) * Focus on a group that spends money * Focus on an area of expertise * Focus on an area where you could write a TON of content
2) Invest in a Home Base * Website * Logo * Photos * Hosting * DON’T SKIMP
3) Create a TON of written content * Write a list of questions you get from customers or potential customers * Take your own tour of the inner workings of your product, service, or topic that appeals to your audience — Create a list of every feature and the questions that likely come up * These questions are your blog posts * Determine a frequency that you can maintain and commit to * Share across Facebook, Twitter, etc.
4) Create How-To Videos * 1-3 minutes * Extension of the written content. HELP people interested in your related industry. * Upload to YouTube. * Upload to Facebook.
5) Create a Lead Magnet and Build an Email List * Pick an email list software (MailChimp, AWeber, Infusionsoft, etc.) * Create a guide, ebook, checklist, webinar or something of value that you can offer in exchange for it * Use OptinMonster, Pippity, etc. to push the opt-in to visitors
6) Facebook ads * Invest whatever makes sense in the early going. Prepare to grow. At least $1/day, but more if possible. * Create a Facebook page * Target website visitors and email subscribers (low amount early) to like your page, drive traffic and opt-in * Create lookalike audiences to do the same * Target interests and split test vs. lookalikes * Over time, your website visitors, email list and fans will grow. You will then move more of your budget to those groups.
CLOSING * More to come * Guests * Audio versions of blog posts * jonloomer.com/pub * Subscribe, rate and review

Dan Jost, who edits my Pubcasts, insisted on the "Return of the Mack" title -- a 90s R&B reference. I figured... why not??
Here's what was covered...
Review of 2014: * AMAZING! * Insane growth. * Email list from 10k to 50k. * Consistent revenue growth. * Building a team — now have “backup CEO” John Robinson * Wrote less — averaged once per week vs. 3-5/week * Still set traffic records * Personally — Baseball was awesome! * Just really fun building this thing. No experience doing it.
Resolutions: * No more winging it! * Refine a daily and weekly routine for work, health and play. * Better structure and processes for campaigns and customer service. * Get back to consistent blogging — thinking about 1-3 posts per week. * New branding and website design. * LOTS OF FACEBOOK VIDEO! * Get the Pubcast going again, but more structure. SCHEDULE GUESTS. * Develop an application or other software product. * Develop a new community product for companies looking for advertising consultants. * Experiment with things I haven’t done before and that make me feel uncomfortable (more public speaking, masterminds)
Resolutions (Personal): * Keep a clean desk. * Don’t overwork. * Read one book per month. * Run a half marathon. * Win another state championship! * Better organize time with my wife and kids. * Put away the device!
Important Tools I Use: * Infusionsoft * ZenDesk * DriftRock Flow * Power Editor * AdEspresso * Evernote * Photoshop * GoToWebinar * Basecamp * Screenflow * Google Analytics

Some Things to Consider... Business growth comes with change including pricing of your products and services. As you look to set your pricing, stop, make a list and ask yourself the following:
As you grow, inquiries increase. Weeding out the trolls. * Is the question about your product or service? * Do people pay for the information that is being requested for free? * Is the question reasonable? * Do you need help to respond to the reasonable questions?

2 Year Retrospective
Beginning to Now
First post: Why I started my Facebook Page.
Virtually no engagement the first month.
First year-plus, experienced some solid growth.
It wasn’t until this year — Beginning in July — when my business truly took off on Facebook.
Lesson: 1) Don’t Quit. 2) Build an audience through providing value. 3) Sell is final step, not first. 4) INVEST — time and money for positive ROI
Debate: Facebook is a waste of money
Forrester report
An open letter to Mark Zuckerberg
Survey of 395 marketers
Satisfaction average score of 3.54 out of 5.0 -> Last. First was on-site ratings and reviews with 3.84.
16% Reach Complainers. Ugh.

Pull up a barstool! On this week’s episode of the Pubcast, Jon sits down for a very special interview with JJ Loomer, CEO of JJ Loomer Wizibido, discussing how he went from no job to owning a business and having clients the next day. Pop a juice box!
Also on this episode, Jon discusses his 4 steps on Growth and Contests:
The Challenge: Grow to 20,000 Likes
Step 1: Know Your Value Proposition
Fans are users. Users are people. People aren't robots. People lead to business. Fans are numbers.
Why should someone like your page? What is interesting about you? What is unique? What value do you provide?
What can you share on a daily basis to make a person's (not FAN's) life better?
Craft branding, imagery, tagline, content and strategy around THIS, not a goal for a number.
IF YOU DON'T DO THIS FIRST, YOU CAN ONLY BUILD A NUMBER, NOT A BUSINESS
Step 2: Execute that Value Proposition
Regularly and consistently publish valuable, self-less, helpful content. The purpose of the majority of posts should be to educate or entertain.
Build organically.
Step 3: Attract with Ads
Offer something of value that appeals to your target audience in exchange for a like.
Micro targeting
Step 4: Contests?

The Life of an Entrepreneur and Life/Work Balance
The nice thing about recording by myself this week is that it gave me an opportunity to give you some insight into some of the things I'm dealing with. I don't have it all figured out, and I go through many of the struggles you do.
My life has been incredibly busy lately, and a big reason for that is baseball. I'm a huge baseball fan, and my three boys are all now playing. I coached my two oldest boys this year, and it was definitely the most fulfilling season I've had.
This busy baseball season came at the expense of business. I simply didn't have time to take on another client, start an online program or redesign my site. You pick and choose what is worthwhile, right?
That said, I am working on the redesign of my site. I'll continue to use Genesis Framework, but I am moving to a mobile responsive theme (more on that soon!).
I'm also working on a new online training program. I've been working on and delaying this for months, but I'm hoping to finally go public soon. I'll be opening for pre-pays shortly, giving early arrivals a big discount. Stay tuned!
If you haven't noticed, I'm making my One-on-One Coaching Sessions a higher priority for my business. This has been a hugely successful program, both for my clients and for my business. Simply go to JonLoomer.com to reserve a session. You'll have 45 minutes to get one-on-one time with me to talk about whatever your issues are with Facebook or content marketing.
Just for listening to today's show, you get a discount. Listen for the promo code!
Facebook Hashtags
The big news is that Facebook has launched hashtags. So, what are they? How should you use them? And what are the problems with hashtags? I discuss these things in great detail.
Tools I Use
People often ask me about what tools I use or recommend that make my Facebook marketing easier. I wrote a post on this, but here are the main ones and a short description:
ShortStack: What I've used for a year and a half to build all of my Facebook tabs. Love this tool!
AgoraPulse: Can be used for creating tabs, community management and a whole lot more. I use it for data analysis.
PerfectAudience: One of the tools I use to create FBX -- Facebook retargeted ads. This is the future of Facebook marketing. Use this link to get a free $70 trial -- this covers the ads themselves, too!
AdRoll: Another service that I use to create FBX ads. Use this link to get a free $60 trial that covers everything including the ads.
PropelAd: Helps you understand which posts you should promote based on interaction. I also use this to get alerts when posts are doing especially well.
PostPlanner: This tool has been a lifesaver for me regarding bulk scheduling Facebook posts. But also great for many problems associated with Facebook community management and content development.
Sit back and enjoy. CHEERS!

Ryan Hanley stopped by the Social Media Pubcast to discuss "Content Warfare" and the battle for attention. This pretty much became a Marcus Sheridan lovefest, but we did find time to talk about some interesting topics that include blogging strategies, effectively using video and the potential impact of Twitter cards.
Links discussed in this episode are below:
Jeff Ferguson of Fang Digital visited the pubcast today and we got crazy nerdy with stats. We talked about the similarities between what the Moneyball Oakland A's meant to baseball and how social media marketing needs a similar movement to help the industry start focus on the right metrics. We also talked about the dismantling of SEO and how that industry is also in for an awakening.

David Foster of Hubze pulled up a seat at the virtual bar this week to cover a wide array of topics. We talked so much that I ended up having to edit out 20 minutes of this conversation. What is left is podcasting gold!
David is an amazing example of a guy who built a company from scratch, bootstrapping with no formal training in programming or design. Hubze is a successful company today, and they are preparing to launch a very exciting new product. To learn more about the product and how you can help fund it, check out gofundme.com/hubze.
We also covered topics that included Facebook privacy, marketing with your head and of course the new Facebook News Feed and our first impressions.
Also make sure to check out my blog post on Everything You Need to Know About the New Facebook News Feed for all of the details, both for users and marketers.
Blake Jamieson pulled up a seat at the virtual bar on this week's Social Media Pubcast and we had an absolute blast. Blake's main claim to fame is taking the Pool Supply World Facebook Page from nothing to more than 75,000 engaged Fans in a very short period of time. Blake shares his secrets of success.
We also talk about Graph Search. I find it hilarious that neither of us have it yet, but Blake's mom does. Blake's mom actually comes up a couple of times in this chat!
Blake and I also take a nice, deep dive into the discussion of metrics; namely Facebook Reach and understanding the metrics that matter for your particular goal. Of course we talk about the reporting bug and our annoyance over that topic as well as sift through the data regarding which types of content are best for generating website traffic -- second guessing what many of us have been doing for quite a while.
If you liked this episode, make sure to subscribe, rate and review since that's the only way I can be found by more listeners. Also be sure to subscribe to my newsletter for regular tips and strategies -- not regurgitated news -- that will keep you ahead of the curve in the Facebook marketing game.

World reknowned blogger Danny Brown pulls up a barstool and fills up his glass as he and Jon tackle several topics. Danny, the author of DannyBrown.me -- one of Social Media Examiner's Top 10 Social Media Blogs of 2013, discusses his numerous transformations and why he redesigns as often as he does (he and Jon both built their sites on Genesis) and how he uses his blog to build his business now. We also debate email marketing tools, frequency and strategies as well as the importance of getting unsubscribes. Make sure to check out Danny's new company ArCompany as well as his new book called Influence Marketing, co-written with Sam Fiorella about social influence.

Jon welcomes Marcus Sheridan (AKA The Sales Lion) to today's show. The two sit at the virtual bar (Marcus with a Diet Coke, Jon with a Stout) to discuss business KPIs. Marcus asserts that comments and social shares are overrated while Jon isn't so sure (here is the blog post he wrote that inspired the discussion). The two also discuss money keywords and the importance (or lack thereof) of short blog posts or videos.
Marcus has been a major influence on Jon's career during the past year, and is the main reason this podcast was created in the first place. Make sure you follow Marcus' blog at TheSalesLion.com for brutally honest and entertaining posts that will help you improve your content marketing.
