The daughter of a dance studio owner, Chelsea spent her formative years absorbing everything to do with running a studio - from dealing with clients and staff to marketing.

After studying at a specialist performing arts high school, Chelsea went to university where she earned a BA majoring in Journalism and Public Relations. She landed a coveted

cadetship with Australia's largest media organisation straight from uni and a successful 15-year career in newspapers, magazines and online media followed.

After 15 years in the media, Chelsea decided to head back to the studio where she became a qualified teacher with two worldwide organisations. Teaching quickly became a passion and Chelsea expertly juggled two careers - freelance journalism for Australia's

biggest magazine and newspaper titles and teaching and managing her mother's dancestudio - for many years.

After moving interstate, Chelsea opened her own studio and quickly grew the student base by more than 40% creating a community-focused environment where her students thrived. The Covid pandemic brought on a change in direction and Chelsea is now using

Skye O'Sullivan is the Director & Founder of SOS Dance Solutions Pty Ltd.For many years Skye has been passionate about Early Education and Intervention of Young Adults and has also been a part of the dance community for 10+ years with her own daughters.

Skye has a Bachelor Degree in Social Work, with a minor in Community Development. Her background was in criminology in the reduction of recidivism within the community. This is where she found her passion for early interventional programs.

She is a member of The Australian Social Work Association (AASW) and a Mental Health First Aid Instructor through the Australian Mental Health Association (AMHA).

Mental health requires a whole system approach that is inclusive of prevention, early intervention, care and recovery processes. Skye has questioned for many years why we don't have mental health support and education within the dance community and endeavours to change this.

Today I sit down with Genevieve from Tutu School to chat about growing your preschool classes!

Genevieve Custer Weeks was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin. She received her early ballet training there, and took part in her first dance productions in the middle of her parents' living room.

At the age of fifteen, Genevieve moved to Chicago to study at the School of Ballet Chicago, and that same year became a founding member of the Ballet Chicago Studio Company. In addition, Genevieve supplemented her training with study at the San Francisco Ballet School, American Ballet Theatre, and with Suzanne Farrell at The Kennedy Center.

A contract with the Oakland Ballet brought Genevieve to the San Francisco Bay Area. Beginning in 2006, Genevieve began performing as a freelance artist, dancing principal and soloist roles throughout North America, and started dreaming of opening her own boutique school that would celebrate the things she loved most about ballet. During a break in her performance schedule, Genevieve's husband, Andrew, finally asked, "Why wait?" and Tutu School was born.

Since the founding of that first initial studio, Tutu School has grown into a collection of more than forty boutique ballet schools all over the US and Canada, and Genevieve – who retired from performing in 2012 – now divides her time between Tutu School and her life with Andrew, a photographer, and their three adorable kids.

ENROL NOW FOR STUDIO BLOOM HERE!

In my previous 2 episodes, I’ve shared with you the step by step strategy to secure a constant (and streamlined) flow of new dance students to your studio. I am sharing this with you because it absolutely breaks my heart seeing tired, overworked & stressed dance studio owners (maybe like you) struggling, wondering what is going wrong or whether they will ever feel like they run their business, rather than their business running them.

Take a listen to find out the secret that many dance studio owners don't know about!

There are so many courses you can sign up to and I bet a heap of them are awesome. But from what I have seen they are either super expensive 12 month masterminds which is also a strain on your finances or there might be lots of little industry specific ones you could sign up to but just don’t “get” what it takes to run a dance studio. Often then we get into a cycle of sign up to a course, implement what we can, but there is still a heap missing…. So you look for the next thing and the cycle continues.

I want to put an end to this cycle and give you EVERYTHING you need to know in one course to become a successful dance studio owner and get more students into your studio.

Studio Bloom is a 12 week comprehensive coaching program with short recorded weekly videos, grab & go templates, practical tasks and easy to implement strategies with 1:1 coaching each and every week to keep you accountable.

Studio Bloom has been created to help your business flourish. Together we will set the foundations and implement systems and automation to ensure your business is ready to grow. Without a rock solid business & marketing plan, your business will not be prepared for growth in the years to come. Together, we will outline your vision & long term goals for the business to create actionable steps to make those dreams a reality.

Want to bloom? 🌸

JOIN THE WAITING LIST FOR STUDIO BLOOM: www.assembledancestudiocoaching.com/studiobloom

Enrolments open - 29th OCTOBER 2021 6AM!

In my last podcast, I shared with you the step by step framework to securing an endless amount of new student leads (hint - it’s all to do with your business plan). Today I am going to share with you how to convert those leads & enquiries into paying and loyal students.

But before I tell you the biggest mistake I see, I am going to share a little personal story! Recently my Husband & I have been searching for a new car. He currently drives my first car (a cute little beat up red corolla) & I have a 4wd with temperamental air conditioning (not ideal with an infant in summer in Queensland).

But it got me thinking, have you ever been to a sales car yard? You won’t forget cause they are generally on you from the minute you walk in! But this is a huge part of their success! Generally the reason that car yards are so successful is they don’t leave you alone to make the sale. I am not trying to say you need to follow your new students around…. But guiding & supporting them through is a sure fire way to convert enquiries to dance students.

So, my question to you is this - how are you treating every new enquiry that comes through to your studio?

How are you keeping tabs on everything? Post it notes? Scribbles in your diary? Facebook? Text messages? There are so many different avenues we can receive information through and so many ways we can opt to capture their information. But if there isn’t a clear funnel, people can get missed or lost = less students & revenue.

Are you guiding them through your website with intentional copy? Or just hoping that the nice pictures will be enough to encourage them to maybe…. Possibly…. hopefully call you?

That is the biggest mistake I see dance studio owners make with their new leads and enquiries (plus not getting for their email address…. But that is a story for another day).

If you are listening to this thinking “Oh my gosh! This is me”. Don’t stress! We can FIX IT.

How?

In my next podcast, I am going to share with you something you can do to ensure that you are not only attracting the right kind of dance student & converting them, but converting them more often to grow your dance studio.

JOIN THE WAITING LIST FOR STUDIO BLOOM: www.assembledancestudiocoaching.com/studiobloom

Enrolments open - 29th OCTOBER 2021 6AM!

You might know me as a podcaster, business coach and dance studio owner. But do you know how I got into the industry? Like so many of you reading, my awesome Mum took me along to my first class at 3 years old and I was hooked. Once I graduated from school I did what most people from school did, went to university! But it was whilst I was studying (enjoying it, but not loving it) that I got a call one day from my Mum and she mentioned how a cute little hall near our house would be for a dance studio. That’s all it took, one little suggestion and I was obsessed. Fast forward to today and I have now been in the industry for over 15 years! I started my studio at 19 and I would attend conferences and events filled with other dance studio owners or business owners and I had so many people saying to me, “you’re so young”, “too young” or “wow, so young!”. I get it, looking back and now seeing 19 year olds, I was so young! But at the time, it pushed me. To have a successful studio I knew I HAD to work hard, but 24/7?? That’s not what I signed up for!

Whenever I attended these conferences or events, the one MAJOR topic that kept coming up when I spoke with more experienced DSOs was “I don’t have enough time with my family”... trying to find that work/life balance was a big issue for a lot of DSO’s and at the time, being 19, I didn’t think much of it. I wasn’t planning to have a family of my own at that time so I wasn’t worried it would be an issue for me. That being said I knew I wanted a family in the future and like most DSO’s starting out, I did EVERYTHING myself so I did often think back to those comments from DSO’s struggling to find balance and I wanted to make sure when that time came me and my dance studio were well prepared for me to not be doing everything myself!

So I started researching, learning & tweaking, trying to figure out what is the best way to build my business processes and systems! I knew you could grow or build a sustainable business with the business steps in your head… you need to take action! So I knuckled down and got to organising, hoping one day, all that hard work would pay off.

Everything came to a head when I had to take maternity leave early due to family reasons. I had to take a step back from the business and well… I am now in month 4 of maternity leave and everything is running smoothly. I jump in to pay bills and wages and I visit when I like, but aside from that my team run, grow & scale my business without me needing to be there!

I know what DSOs need to get more time, be in control of their businesses and ultimately grow their student numbers. That is why I started coaching and that is why I created Studio Bloom. If you haven't heard already, I have created a comprehensive 12 week coaching program called Studio Bloom with a 5 step process to really grow your business and watch it flourish!

  • Prepare: Avatars, Goal Setting, Product Ladders & Offers
  • Plan: Pricing, Sales Messaging, Cashflow & Budgeting
  • Nurture: Your Team & Systems
  • Grow: Events, Traffic, Connections & Community
  • Harvest: Automation & a Business Bloom Action Plan

Stop being okay with being okay…. It’s time to BLOOM!

Without a strategic marketing and business plan, you can try a heap of different things and it might get you to your goals eventually, but if you want to take clear, actionable steps to grow (& save your sanity)...This program is for you! On completion of the course, you will walk away with a comprehensive Business Plan that will set you up for success for years to come!

But you might ask, ‘how does a business plan lead to growth? Stay tuned for next episode!

We all know there is more to running an amazing dance studio then posting on social media and emailing with parents. Without creating an exceptional experience in the classroom, we don’t have an amazing product that we can share and grow.

If you are a one person show or growing your team, it is so hard to balance the time between all the administration that comes with running a business as well as creating exciting lesson plans from week to week. Here is where an amazing curriculum steps in!

If you have spare cash lying around, I would recommend looking to purchase a curriculum that is already done for you as it would save a heap of time. But maybe like me when I started the curriculum journey, if you don’t have a heap spare at minute, it might be time to create something yourself. Or even if you like creative control, creating a curriculum that is custom to your studio can be an amazing asset.

Over the next 3 episodes I am going to dive deep on the difference between a curriculum that works & one that flops, what you need to ask yourself when creating a successful curriculum & my 5 step curriculum creation process to create the curriculum of your dreams.

Over the next 3 weeks I will be sharing bonus tidbits, templates and videos in my Facebook group for DSOs. If you want to grab a copy, just join the FB community. It is all free! https://www.facebook.com/groups/assembledancestudiocoaching

Today we are going over the 4 questions you need to ask yourself before starting to create a curriculum at your studio.

Like many other DSOs I am a part of a heap of different Facebook groups & dance studio owner communities and something I consistently see coming up or being asked about is how to not feel guilty about not being at your studio?

Have you ever had these thoughts before?

  • How do I manage work/life balance?
  • How do I not worry when I'm not there?
  • Will parents be concerned I'm not there?
  • What happens if something goes wrong?
  • Have I spent enough time with family this week?
  • Ugh... I didn't finish everything on my to do list

If you are looking for some strategies to deal with this feeling, keep listening!

As a dance studio business coach, I speak with and see so many amazing dance studio owners every year. All of my clients generally want to grow or improve in some way obviously, but even as DSOs in the community I am sure you have seen and know amazing DSOs as well as some business owners who might be struggling to grow or manage their businesses.

If you don’t do these things - of course it doesn’t mean you aren't successful. I’m not perfect at all of these either.

Success is defined as “the accomplishment of an aim or purpose.”

"Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts."

-- Winston S. Churchill

In today’s episode I take you through the six differences between a successful and an unsuccessful dance studio.

  1. Invest time and money into team training
  2. Delegate
  3. Have a clear business plan with 1, 5 & 10 year goals
  4. Know their numbers
  5. Follow through
  6. Feel included as part of a community & be supported

If you are wanting to create more rapid growth in your business and yourself - make a note of the details above and take action to start implementing this week!

Well, in case you didn’t know I am pregnant, but by the time you hear this I might already have a little bub!

In todays episode I am telling you the steps I put in place for my maternity leave and how you can implement them as well! If you aren’t going on maternity leave or don’t plan to (totally fine), the same info in this episode

could be applied to a short or extended holiday, family emergency or even if you were to injure yourself etc!

I Have seen a lot of posts in Facebook groups from people who are unsure what to do, have last minute staff changes and are generally stressed about the concept of “leaving” for an extended period. I get it - it's not always possible and I am not claiming to have all the info or to be completely checking out for the next 4 months. But due to a few extenuating circumstances over the last month, I started my mat leave even a little early.

Here are my top 5 musts for me to be able to step away from the business:

1. Invested time and money into team training

2. Systemise your processes

3. Trust in your team

4. Schedule catch ups

5. Allocate roles & their ability to make decisions

If you have any further questions, please reach out to me! I would love to help! hello@assembledancestudiocoaching.com

In this episode, I sit down with Holly who is just about to open her own dance studio.....brings me back to when I first started, wow.

During the coaching call, I guide Holly into navigating what costs are worth it when starting out & what she can hold back on until her business grows.

16 years ago, Holly went to her first ballet class and fell in love with dance, 3 years ago she fell in love with teaching dance and is now bringing her passion and compassion to the Brisbane dance community.

A little about Holly, she is a 3rd year university student studying a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physics and a Bachelor of Business majoring in Economics. Holly is very passionate about promoting women in STEM and make it a priority in her life to be a good role model for my students, showing them a successful business and science woman, the woman we didn’t get a chance to look up to.

In terms of her dance career, she has been dancing for 17 years in styles including ballet, jazz, contemporary and musical theatre. She completed her Advanced 1 RAD ballet training and her CSTD Level 6 during her teenage years as well as performing in several musicals including ‘Cats’ and ‘Hairspray’.

Holly also makes it a priority of hers to express the importance of diversity, love and acceptance especially in dance. Multiplicity is an LGBTQIA+ friendly space, open to all walks of life, all skin tones, all pronouns, all bodies. Holly believes if she can empower just one of my students to stand up for themselves, accept who they are and be confident in themselves, she’s done her job.

Robyn Parras has a bachelor degree in primary education and has a certificate IV in training and assessing. During her last year of university in 2008, she opened up her own dance studio so that she had a full time job upon leaving university. While Robyn still taught in primary schools for 3 years, this gave her the opportunity to develop her studio. In 2011, Robyn was appointed the director of the Sydney Roosters Cheer Squad and is still the director today. The studio was dance only until In 2018 Robyn added circus to her studios repertoire. At the start 2020, Robyn and her team reached out to all of the local dance studios to put on a bush fire benefit concert which raised over $12,000 as a Dance community. During the covid pandemic, Robyn re branded her studio from Rock the Block Dance and Circus to Prodigy Performing Arts. Also during this time, Robyn developed The Dance Apprentice, teacher training for dance studios. Ever wanted to grow your dance studio or income by adding a digital dance studio or digital product? Miah Pullen did just that (and shared a heap of tips & tricks with us on today's interview). Miah started Dance with Me as a local at home dance program through her studio in May 2020. The program was a great solution for parents and students who didn't feel quite comfortable going back to the studio that summer with the global pandemic still in full swing. After seeing the possibilities in the online dance world, and that the need for online dance classes is not going anywhere, even after the pandemic is long gone, Miah decided to bring this program to the next level.

Miah was born and raised in Texas, and began dancing at the age of two. After high school and entering college, Miah started renting out a local studio to teach dance team prep classes for dancers who wanted to try out for the high school dance team. The business eventually grew enough to where Miah was able to open her own studio in August 2017, where in her first year open she ended the season with 180 dancers. The studio now has around 300 dancers. Miah is expanding her studio to open a second location in another city this summer and in February 2021 opened her online dance studio for kids, Dance with Me. Miah has also been the coordinator for the college dance team for 3 years and is a college instructor at a community college. Miah has been married to her husband Ronnie for over two years and they have two whippits, Ellie and Brock.

Want to find out more about Miah? You can find her on socials here: dancewithmeonline.co or at @dancewithme.online

Dance studio owners can join our affiliate program for free for a limited time! They just refer dancers to Dance with Me online, dancers sign up and they receive 15% commission.

Sheina is a dancer and traveller from Melbourne Australia. Although she entered the dance world quite late in the industry, at 20 years old, she realised that it was her passion and I went to all lengths to make it a part of her life. Fast forward through failed auditions and struggling with industry standards, she was teaching and performing on stages around the world. With her background in marketing, she paved a unique path for herself which gave her the freedom to design her own lifestyle.
