DISCIPLINE vs. FOCUS
Introduction
What is the difference between discipline and focus, and why does it matter so much? The confusion between these two terms has caused some heartache when trying to become successful. People have confused one for the other and misused them incorrectly, thus delaying their progress. I would like to review the differences and provide information on how best to use them.
Discipline
I would like to start with the basics of defining discipline to ensure we discuss the same thing. One of the best definitions I have ever heard was from Jim Rohn. He said, "Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment" This definition inspires me because it reminds me of when I need to be disciplined. I have learned that it does not take much to have a great idea; if you talk to someone long enough, they will tell you about theirs, but it takes effort to put a plan in place, with goals, to make that idea come to life. Once you have the plan in place, this is where discipline is needed. It is when you start having to put action into place to accomplish that goal.
Discipline involves self-control, self-restraint, and the ability to regulate behavior to achieve a particular goal or objective. Discipline can be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual and can be applied in various areas of life, such as education, sports, work, and personal development. It is often seen as a critical element in achieving success, requiring consistency, dedication, and focus.
I heard Mike Tyson once say in an interview that "discipline is doing things you don't want to do and still do it as you love it" Mike Tyson is considered one of the greatest heavyweight boxers ever. He had a remarkable career in professional boxing, with a record of 50 wins (44 by knockout) and six losses. If there is someone who can credibly talk about discipline and not just talk about it in a book, I think Mike Tyson ranks among one of the most disciplined people in the world.
However, if you prefer a more scholarly definition, Elbert Hubbard. He said, "Self-discipline is the ability to make yourself do what you should do when you should do it, whether you feel like it or not."
Focus
Now that we know what discipline is, let's talk about focus.
Do you ever find yourself struggling to concentrate on a task, getting easily distracted, or feeling overwhelmed by the demands of daily life? In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to lose focus and become sidetracked by various distractions, such as social media, email, and other interruptions. However, focus is essential to achieve your goals and succeeding personally and professionally.
What is focus? Focus directs your attention and energy toward a specific task, goal, or objective. It involves blocking distractions and other irrelevant information and devoting your mental and physical resources to the task. Focus is a skill that can be developed and improved with practice, and it is essential for achieving success in many areas of life.
Why is focus important? Focus is vital for several reasons. First, it allows you to prioritize and organize your thoughts and actions, which can help you achieve your goals more efficiently. When you focus, you can use your time and energy more effectively and are less likely to become distracted or procrastinate.
Second, focus helps you fully engage with the task, increasing your motivation, productivity, and creativity. When you are entirely focused on a mission, you are more likely to come up with new ideas, solve problems, and make progress toward your goals.
Finally, focus can help you to reduce stress and anxiety by enabling you to stay in the present moment and avoid worrying about the past or the future. Focusing on what you can control and influence in th
