During the days of Herod the Great, from 5 to 6 BC, a priest named Zechariah is serving at the Temple in Jerusalem and doing the once-in-a-life honor of serving at the Altar of Incense. He is greeted by the angel Gabriel who announces that his barren wife Elizabeth will conceive a child who will be a forerunner to the Messiah.
