Jason Greer helps people “master their story”! With more than a decade of work in diversity and inclusion, labor and industrial relations, Jason has a unique perspective on the subject of bias in the workplace. We discuss the following topics around bias in the workplace:

  • Implicit and explicit bias as well as examples of implicit bias in the workplace
  • In-groups, out-groups, the “dopamine effect” and the “cortisol effect”
  • Unconscious bias in the workplace
  • The value of finding common ground
  • The importance of being vulnerable

Leadership

“You are one commonality from truly understanding somebody else.”

If you prefer to read along while you listen, we’ve done all the hard work for you! We listened back to this episode and took notes below, and access is free! Bias Basics * Bias, from a brain perspective, is good. * Everyone has biases – it’s how we evolved. * Our ancestors lived in small groups – the group you lived in was your “In-Group”, and being in the company of your In-Group made you feel comfortable and safe (the “dopamine effect”). * In the presence of your Out-Group (which is anyone not in your In-Group), you felt stressed, triggering the Flight or Fight response (the “cortisol effect”).

Types of Bias * Explicit Bias: The type of bias we are consciously aware of. * Implicit Bias: Goes beyond surface level – inspiring reactions to things without you knowing why.

Bias in the Workplace * Bias can interfere with working relationships * Bias can motivate microaggressions in the workplace that can create hostile working environments. * Affinity Groups allow for minority populations within workplaces to reach out to one another for support and community – and in principle, this is a wonderful thing.

Combating Bias in the Workplace * Encourage people to tell their stories: “The more we understand each others’ story, the more freedom it gives you to master your story.” * Find common ground: “You are one commonality from truly understanding somebody else.”

GCI Workshops * GCI Workshops focus on “mastering your story” and understanding how diversity works for you, but how you can also work for one another. * Talking about diversity isn’t enough to make people conquer their biases. It’s enough to help people identify it, but not conquer it. * Vulnerability is critical to motivating others to let down their guard.
