10:58 / November 11, 2016 / Commemoration / Elgin Street at the National Arts Centre with Parliament Hill on the left and Chateau Laurier Hotel on the right / Ottawa is many things, including home of the Government of Canada, with its numerous national institutions, monuments and places of contemplation such as the National War Memorial (The Response) a tall, granite memorial arch with accreted bronze sculptures / Ottawa is a place where decisions are made to send women and men to war / This recording was made on 11 November, Canada’s Remembrance Day: the national day to remember those who died in military service – the anniversary of the Armistice agreement in 1918 that ended the First World War / The sounds recorded on this cloudy November morning are the singing of the national anthem ‘O Canada’ by a children’s choir and the public (a mix of English and French), a trumpet call, 11 bells on parliament hill, distant guns, flags at half mast, a minute of silence, a helicopter and a bagpipe //
