20:59 / January 17, 2017 / Pipes / Gas meter at Rideau Terrace in Lindenlea-New Edinburgh / We rarely listen to the sound of heat production / My mother, artist Jeannine Schryer, is from Ottawa and lives in this 1960’s era high rise apartment building / Each time I walk by this gas meter I am mesmerized by its unique sound : an enchanting ‘hiss’ that pulsates in a musical way / I recorded the sound on a cold winter evening, starting close up and slowly walking away (you can see the footsteps in the photo) / This Ottawa sound is significant to me because the heating of buildings is such an important part of life – of survival - in a cold winter city / I wrote this poem about the recording: moving through sound, punctured, filtered, listener controlled, distance felt, pushing into the sound //
