13:26 / December 29, 2016 / Metro Plus Domaine, 6550 Rue Sherbrooke E. / 45.582043, -73.542743 / Sitting In A Warm Spot On A Bench At A Grocery Store / Although the door to this grocery store is only a few steps away, and stays shut for a few moments before triggering open automatically, a sweet spot of warmth can be found right here, on the bench facing it / This time, the bench is empty, and I decide to sit down to record / Many familiar sounds can be heard in a stream or an endless flow: the rickety shopping carts being wheeled individually and more quietly by patrons or in larger groups and more loudly by employees; the heating system droning dutifully on while acting as a buffer against the bitter cold and wind that often accompanies snowfall in Montreal; the opening and closing of the automatic doors causing a rubbery friction that creates short sounds not unlike the cooing of a pigeon / To the left of where I’m sitting, patrons stream inside the grocery store with empty carts, or leave with full ones on the way to their cars / To my right, carts get wheeled and cans are exchanged for coins / This store called Métro Plus is conveniently located a few meters away from the metro / It reminds me of the kind of groceries stores found deeper inside the city, where artisanal beer sections are often found, and where the convenience of location is countered by the inconvenience of price / The muffled beeping of scanners barely cuts through the sound barrier, but operated by cashiers, it signifies time moving forward //
