This podcast is for family leaders and those who aspire to think multigenerationally about their money, culture, work, family and community. Living out a multigenerational mindset that embraces good stewardship as a building block of God’s Kingdom on Earth might produce Abrahamic levels of impact. Can you imagine?!
Every dad has been there. Your child says something disrespectful. Your spouse reacts in a way you didn't expect. Stress builds at work, and before you know it, you're responding out of emotion instead of wisdom. But what if there was a simple framework that could help you slow down, take ownership of your thoughts, and respond in a way that honors God?
In this episode, we're joined by James Lenhoff to unpack the powerful CTFAR method—a practical tool that's helped countless people navigate conflict, parenting, marriage, work, and even financial decisions with greater clarity and self-control. If you've ever wished you could respond more intentionally instead of reacting in the moment, this conversation will give you a framework you'll use for years to come.Links In This EpisodeEmotion Wheel: https://abrahamswallet.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Emotion-Wheel-1.jpgCTFAR Model Questions: https://abrahamswallet.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/07/Unknown.pdfWealthQuest: https://www.wqcorp.com/GoodSense: https://goodsensemovement.org/ FreedUp App: https://getfreedup.com/

What if the next great family business wasn't a business at all—but a car? Self-driving vehicles are arriving faster than most people realize, and they may completely change how families think about transportation, income, and stewardship.
In this episode, we explore why autonomous Teslas could become one of the most practical business opportunities available to ordinary families. Imagine a vehicle that can run errands, take Grandma to church, drive the kids to practice, handle airport runs, and potentially earn income while you're at work or asleep. It sounds futuristic, but the future may be closer than you think. Join us as we discuss the opportunities, challenges, and implications of a world where your next employee might be a car.

In this episode of Abraham's Wallet, we confront the pressure on Christians — especially fathers and church leaders — to stay silent on "political" topics. We will explain how the culture has hijacked the word "politics" to silence biblical truth on marriage, family, gender, human dignity, and creation order.
This is a call for men to lead their homes courageously by applying Scripture to every area of life, rejecting cowardly silence, and reclaiming bold Christian civic engagement. Perfect for dads, grandfathers, and anyone tired of the false divide between faith and culture.

Many Christians have been taught a version of American history that treats faith as an afterthought—or worse, a problem to overcome. But what if the story is more complicated than that? What if the men who shaped this nation regularly referenced Scripture, called for Christian virtue, and believed that faith was essential to preserving liberty?
In this episode, we explore the often-forgotten Protestant heritage of America and why it matters for Christian fathers today. Not because America is perfect or worthy of worship, but because understanding the inheritance God has given us helps us teach our children with gratitude, wisdom, and truth. If you're shaping the culture of your home, this is a story worth knowing.Links in this EpisodeRevolution: https://amzn.to/4vZ4bP6 The Light and the Glory: https://amzn.to/4oCbGsK Join our Online Community, UR: https://abrahamswallet.com/support/ AW Bootcamp: Aug 21-23 https://abrahamswallet.com/retreat/Please partner with us in inspiring and equipping multi-gen families at https://abrahamswallet.com/supportAW websiteApple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeFacebookLinkedInInstagram
Most Christians think of inheritance in terms of money, land, or possessions. But what if one of the greatest inheritances God has given you is the place where you live? Your neighborhood, your city, your state, and even your nation are not accidents—they're part of the stewardship God has entrusted to you.
In this first episode of our four-part America series, we explore the biblical call to seek the welfare of your place and why faithful Christian families have a responsibility to build, bless, and cultivate the communities around them. If you've ever wondered what it looks like to love your country without idolizing it, this conversation is for you. Please partner with us in inspiring and equipping multi-gen families at https://abrahamswallet.com/supportAW websiteApple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeFacebookLinkedInInstagram
What if the real win this summer isn’t building something new… but learning to actually enjoy what God has already given you? So many Christian fathers spend their lives grinding, building, planning, and striving that they forget to stop and receive the gifts sitting right in front of them: their current stage of life, meaningful friendships, simple meals, time in God’s Word, and quiet moments of peace.
Don’t fall into the “performance trap” and lose your ability to savor life. Scripture teaches that enjoyment itself is a gift from God—and an Abrahamic father is called not only to build faithfully, but to receive God’s goodness with gratitude and pass that joy down to his children. If your soul feels tired even while your life looks productive, this episode might be the reset you need.

A lot of Christian men treat fitness and health like optional side quests—something nice to care about after the important stuff is handled. But what if stewarding your body is actually part of your calling as a husband, father, and leader? Right behind spiritual and relational capital sits physical capital, and ignoring it eventually impacts everything else God has entrusted to you.
In this episode, we talk honestly about the “dad bod” mindset, why physical health matters more than most Christian men want to admit, and some practical ways to start taking stewardship of your body seriously. Steven shares the conversation with his doctor that changed everything for him, and together we unpack how better health can help you show up stronger for your wife, your kids, and the work God has given you.

Most families don’t lose the farm because of bad markets—they lose it because relationships fall apart during the transfer. But Hayden and Sheree Ballinger are building something different. On their 230-hectare dairy farm in Victoria, Australia, they’ve found a way to honor parents, preserve sibling relationships, and create a model for multi-generational living that actually brings the family closer together.
In this episode, we unpack how they structured the transfer of their family farm, why proactive stewardship matters, and what it looks like to protect both the assets and the relationships. They didn’t just inherit land - they stewarded a legacy of peace. To see how they did it (and how you can too) watch this episode.

Most Christians think of the church building as “the temple” or “the sanctuary”… but biblically, that’s not true. In the New Covenant, God’s presence doesn’t dwell in a building—He dwells in His people. That means you are the temple. And by extension, your household becomes the front line of worship, holiness, and spiritual leadership.
In this episode, we unpack the biblical meaning of the temple and why fathers must take seriously their role as spiritual leaders in the home. If you’ve grown tired, faced resistance, or felt like your efforts aren’t making a difference—don’t quit. What happens inside your home has eternal significance, and your leadership matters more than you realize.Links in this EpisodeAW Bootcamp: Aug 21-23 Family Worship by Joel Beeke

A lot of Christian dads think budgeting is only for people who are broke. But imagine standing before God—the true Owner of everything—and saying, “We made money… we just don’t really know where it went. And we don’t have a plan for what’s next.” That’s not freedom. That’s careless stewardship.
In this episode of Abraham’s Wallet, we talk about why even prosperous families must budget like serious managers of wealth, how budgeting actually protects your future, and why the habits you build now will serve your family for decades. If you’ve ever thought “we don’t need a budget,” this one might change the way you see money forever.About Abraham’s Wallet: Abraham’s Wallet exists to inspire and equip Biblical family leaders. Please partner with us in inspiring and equipping multi-gen families at https://abrahamswallet.com/supportAW websiteApple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeFacebookLinkedInInstagram
Whole life insurance is being rebranded right now as “Bank on Yourself” or “Infinite Banking”—and the pitch sounds incredibly attractive. It promises safety, guaranteed growth, and the ability to borrow from your own policy like you’re your own bank. But what most families don’t realize is that for the average Christian dad, this strategy often creates more financial drag than freedom.
In this episode, we break down the real differences between term vs whole life, why whole life gets sold so aggressively, and the few situations where it can actually be useful. But mostly, this is a warning: what looks like wisdom on paper can quietly keep your family from building real wealth, margin, and generosity. If you’ve ever been pitched infinite banking—or you’re considering buying whole life—watch this first.About Abraham’s Wallet: Abraham’s Wallet exists to inspire and equip Biblical family leaders. Please partner with us in inspiring and equipping multi-gen families at https://abrahamswallet.com/supportAW websiteApple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeFacebookLinkedInInstagram
The culture is aggressively sexualized right now—and if you feel overwhelmed as a dad, you’re not crazy. Media, entertainment, and even government messaging constantly push the idea that sex has no boundaries and no consequences. But the fruit of that “freedom” is everywhere: broken hearts, depression, shattered marriages, fatherless generations—and children being exposed far earlier than ever before.
In this episode, we speak directly to fathers about how to fight for your children’s sexual purity. This is a real battle, and your kids are in the crosshairs—but God designed you to be the shepherd of your flock. We talk honestly and explicitly about what dads must do: how to start the conversation early, build guardrails, pray over them, watch carefully, and lead with courage so you can one day hand your child to their future spouse with a clear conscience.

Most churches love to celebrate big giving stories—but for a lot of Christian dads, that kind of generosity right now wouldn’t be godly… it would be irresponsible. If you’re drowning in debt, living paycheck to paycheck, and stressed about providing, writing a big check doesn’t fix the real problem—it just delays it.
In this episode, we rewind the conversation and break down the 4 A’s of Godly Financial Health—a simple biblical framework that helps you build margin, get disciplined, and lead your family with clarity. This is the path toward real freedom, long-term family vision, and eventually the kind of joyful, aggressive generosity that lasts for generations.

Most Christian men don’t realize how deeply the culture around them has shaped the way they think about money. What feels normal—how we spend, borrow, upgrade, and define success—often mirrors the world far more than it reflects the wisdom of Scripture.
In this episode, we unpack the hidden pressures behind modern money habits and explore how fathers can intentionally build a different financial culture in their homes. One that prioritizes faithfulness over appearances, wisdom over impulse, and long-term blessing over short-term comfort. AI isn’t coming. It’s here. And it’s already shaping your kids.
While most parents are barely aware of what tools their children are using, classrooms are changing, homework is changing, and the way young people think and create is changing. The question isn’t whether AI will be part of your family’s future — it’s whether you’ll lead your home through it intentionally or let it shape your children unchecked.
In this episode, we train fathers to think clearly about artificial intelligence: the real dangers, the subtle temptations, and the massive opportunities. What are teachers seeing in classrooms right now? How should Christian parents respond? And how do you disciple your children to use AI as a tool — not a crutch, not a shortcut, and not a master?
Technology always discipled someone. The question is: will it disciple your kids… or will you?

In the final episode of the Abrahamic Starter Series, we step back and ask a bold question: If a man actually lived this out — what would his life look like? Not the vague, lonely retirement story our culture sells, but the good life God designed. A faithful husband. A fruitful home. Grandchildren around the table. Debt-free. Assets compounding. A legacy stretching 200 years into the future. We’ve torn down the broken pop-Christian script. We’ve reclaimed dominion, dynasty, sacrificial headship, and kingdom-minded money. Now we paint the picture of where that road leads. Most Christian men handle money exactly like their unbelieving neighbors. They tithe a little, save for retirement, and hope it all works out.
But what if money was never meant to fund comfort — but dominion?
In this fourth episode of the Abrahamic Starter Kit, we zoom in on the Abrahamic money mentality. This is about building wealth that serves a 200-year vision — not just coasting through a safe suburban life.

Most Christian men aren't building their families in a way that is producing strength, legacy, or long-term faithfulness. The Bible teaches us a better way.
In the third episode of this "Abrahamic Starter Kit Series," we unveil The Abrahamic Model — a completely different operating system for marriage, child-raising, and money. In this episode, we go back to the biblical mandate and show what it looks like for a man to lead his home with sacrificial authority so that his wife thrives and his children grow up ready to carry the family torch. This isn’t about trends. It’s about reclaiming God’s original design — and building something that lasts for generations.

Every February, we do something that feels almost rebellious in today’s culture—we practice telling ourselves no. No extra spending. No impulse buys. No quick coffee runs or “let’s just grab takeout.” Instead, we use what’s already in the house, clean out the freezer and pantry, and slow life down just enough to notice how often spending has replaced presence.
In this episode, we talk about why this simple reset is so powerful. Saying no to consumerism builds self-control, margin, and connection. And it often leads to better conversations, more time together, and a surprising amount of peace. If you’ve felt stretched thin, distracted, or stuck on the spending treadmill, this February challenge might be exactly the reset your family needs.About Abraham’s Wallet: Abraham’s Wallet exists to inspire and equip Biblical family leaders. Please partner with us in inspiring and equipping multi-gen families at https://abrahamswallet.com/supportAW websiteApple PodcastsSpotifyYouTubeFacebookLinkedInInstagram
This is Episode 2 of the Abrahamic Starter Kit, where we lay out what Scripture actually calls the primary mission of men: marry, multiply, and fill the earth. We return to Genesis 1 and 1 Corinthians 7 to challenge the idea that marriage and children are optional, secondary, or a distraction from “real” ministry. They aren’t. They are central to God’s design.
Whether you’re single, married, or already a dad, this episode resets the vision for family, fruitfulness, and legacy. We talk practically about how marriage must function differently when dominion—not comfort—is the goal. If you’re ready to stop drifting with culture and start building something that lasts for generations, this episode will rewire how you see your mission.

After the sudden loss of a close friend, we felt compelled to have a conversation most fathers avoid—but shouldn’t. In this episode, we talk honestly about preparing your family for the unthinkable. Not because money can ease grief (it can’t), but because wise preparation can remove unnecessary fear, confusion, and pressure when tragedy strikes.
This isn’t about morbid planning or living in fear. It’s about faithful stewardship and providing for your family which is what every father is responsible for. “Multi-generational Wealth” is a bit of a buzz word, but it’s not something that you can just get up and make happen. It takes sacrifice and dedication. It takes living a life on mission. Listen to today’s episode to find out how to protect your money to build wealth, not for yourself but to impact future generations.

$1M in your retirement account doesn’t make you rich. For one, wealth is not defined by the money in your bank account. And even if your monthly paycheck is high, that does NOT mean you are on the path to sitting pretty in retirement and passing down tons of money to your grandchildren. - Honestly, it often is quite the opposite. But you can be wealthy, financially secure and pass down money to future generations. Listen to this episode to find out how.

After Justin Wolfenburg began to have kids he realized that fatherhood wasn’t about making his kids' lives fun. Instead, it was a way to lead a team on adventures. Even as young children, Justin made it his focus to build resilience in his children and push them to do hard things, overcome great obstacles and enjoy the feeling of accomplishment.
In order to teach this, you must allow your children to suffer well by coming alongside them and showing them that hard work is good. It might not always be fun, but work is a good thing we were created to do. And pursing hard work yields great results.

When I think about a Patriarch Family, I think of Joe Freudenberg and how he used his journey in life to make something new for his family. Joe went from youth ministry to a factory work. He knew needed to learn more in the areas of being a good father, financial responsibilities, and growing in his faith. He used his time working on the line in a factory to listen to hundreds of podcasts and books to grow in these areas. Whenever he would meet someone that had a rhythm in their family that he wanted, he would invite them to coffee and learn from their life experiences. Through humbling himself and growing in these areas, Joe started his own pickleball court construction company and God is using this to bless his family in innumerable ways. It is very rare to find a family who says, I want to do exactly what my parents did. So many couples today are building something completely new for their families. They are inspired by new traditions of those around them and have begun incorporating those traditions in their family as well.
If this describes you, then you are a “New Patriarch.” We see you and we applaud what you are doing. We want to encourage you to continue to be bold as you try new things. It’s scary to step out of the box, but it is completely worth it. But while you are trying new things, don’t lose sight of your commitment to your marriage. Work together to strategically determine the new rhythms of your family and train up your children in the new ways they will go.

It’s become increasingly popular to have the goal of “retiring early.” We see Grandpa living in a retirement community where he plays golf all day and has no commitments. That sounds great! Why should I wait until I’m 65 to do that? I think I will be super frugal and start coasting along in life at 50. Sounds great, right?
This is the heartbeat of the FIRE movement. (Financial Independence Retire Early) And while we love the tactics used to live debt free and save money, the goal is 100% self-focused. People who retire early do not feel more free and fulfilled, they actually feel more depressed and their lives feel meaningless.
Why is this? What does the Bible have to say about work? What good things can we take from this FIRE movement and use to glorify God and build generational wealth instead? Watch this episode to find out.

When I (Steven) first got married, I had a desire to find a marriage study that taught what the Bible directly said about marriage. I couldn’t find what I was looking for, so I made one. It has been tweaked and altered over the years and now it is ready to be passed on to you.
Outside of your relationship with God himself, there is no more important relationship in your life than with your wife. This relationship takes the development of skills that you will develop for the rest of your life.
God is the creator of marriage. How does he say it should work? What does the picture of Christ and his church mean for our marriage relationships? How can your story with your wife play out the bigger story of the larger story of God and his people? All this and so much more is included in the 10 week study.

There are often two ditches churches can find themselves in. There are the churches who think, my pastor is such a good public speaker. If he doesn’t EXACTLY fit in the qualifications of an elder, it’s ok. We are all just trying our best. I can look past this and that.
Then, there is another type of church whose members think it’s their personal responsibility to hold their pastor accountable to the qualifications of the elders and every implication that they think it holds. They are constantly on guard, looking for any potential sin in their pastor's lives.
Both of these ideas are wrong. But what isn’t wrong is the idea that there are very clear qualifications for elders and it is our responsibility to hold our pastors to them and be on guard for false teachers. How do we do this in a balanced and gracious way? Listen to our latest podcast episode to find out.
Last week the S&P 500 hit an all-time high. (Woohoo!) In light of this, we decided to take a minute (with the help of "Cletus") to demonstrate the importance of making “boring” financial investments.
But, patience is not only a virtue when it comes to finances. We also need to be patient as we shepherd the hearts of our children. This sounds great in theory, but what do you say and do when your 4 year old wants to get saved or get baptized? We get into all of this today.

Poverty is invisible; it exists in your work ethic, your personal discipline, your aversion to pain, and even your ability to make a plan. Steven and Mark kick around the Biblical idea of poverty, and give tips on how to wrestle it into submission, so that you can lead your family into true, deep, lasting prosperity. Also, Mark is excited that Texas now has razor wire!

There is a family (okay, there are many families) who have decided that, one month a year, they'll spend as little as possible, wear not-spanking-new clothes, forego lattes, and eat everything they already have! The LoDo exercise we do here at Abe's Wallet every February helps train us in spending, our ability to restrain ourselves... and helps train our money to not be our master! Give this experiment a listen and maybe try it yourself!

In this episode, Steven and Mark lay out a case for AMBITIONS: it's good to have them, but they can be dangerous if vanity is present.

What can the Chronicles of Narnia, a decades-old children’s fiction teach us about having a godly home? Mark Parrett talks with Aaron Bair, a teacher and author of A Joyful Outpost, which is an exploration of the Narnia stories created by C.S. Lewis. Aaron believes that a Biblical home of order, security, celebration, bravery, and hospitality are all wonderfully modeled for us by… Mr. and Mrs. Beaver!??

Let's talk about DIVORCE. Is it ALWAYS off-limits? Might there be ANY circumstances, Biblically, when divorce would be justified? Can we have compassion on people no matter WHAT their situation is? And is there any conflict between God's perfect laws, Moses' 'policies' that he wrote, and Jesus' controversial words on the subject? And... would it worth being punching a buddy in the face over it? I mean, if you even care a LITTLE BIT about multi-generational family building... THIS SUBJECT MATTERS so let's get down to brass tacks!

Linda Manuel shares a lifetime of wisdom gleaned from hard work, thrifty parents, personal responsibility, and the challenge of independence. She tells us why being over generous with children (as well as helping them out of all their troubles) is unwise and unproductive. She explains that being good at a job, getting up on time, meeting your responsibilities, and personal autonomy are all fostered very early on… and tells us how she did it!

In this week's episode, Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett discuss the need of obedience at home. Assuming fathers are in submission to God, how do they train their children to obey as well? And... how important is that, anyway? Isn't obedience training swimming upstream of culture, pop psychology, and just about every modern notion? Besides the fact... don't we want to get ALONG with our kids!?

Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett discuss a long-standing social problem. With the latest Bud Light/Dylan Mulvaney kerfuffle, and with Target (and other retailers) rolling out the rainbows this summer… what is the Christian playbook on protesting and boycotting products and brands that violate our conscience? Is there any recourse to just complaining or demanding these companies change their policies or messaging? It’s a hot topic… and it ain’t going away. If you’re going to lead your family, you should have an answer to this question. AND… you should have a plan for how to build something stronger than the current cultural sentiment. Join us as we discuss Chic-Fil-A, BP, and Goya Beans.

Steven Manuel shares a method for dedicating property (think: homes and businesses) to God... and cleaning out whatever might have been there before. If expanding the Kingdom is part of our mandate, then this is a super helpful skill for all would-be Abrahams! Watch as Ross Dykstra dedicates a new business property and see how "anointing" is practically done. (Wait... do we believe this stuff is actually real???)

Mark and Amelia Parrett sit down for a frank discussion about how to talk to children about sex. Starting with the very earliest years, describing their bodies to them (and telling them what they’re for!) sets children up to eventually become family leaders in their own rite. Amelia’s experience as a lecturer to school and church groups about “Maturation” makes her a great resource for practical help for a contentious subject.

Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel describe one of the most important skills anybody can master when it comes to financial acumen: the ability to deal with debt. First of all, what does the Bible say? Is it legal for Bible people to borrow (or lend) with interest? Then: is getting out of all debt ASAP always the best policy? Might there be GOOD debt as well as BAD debt? And what does LEVERAGE really mean? Also: what about that time the fellas went out to Las Vegas to watch some hoops?

There are rumblings and mumblings out on the street, and we're going to get to the bottom of it all. Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel talk through the headline grabbers, grabbing helpful insights and wisdom from all the goo. Much of the hype should be ignored, they say (which is a normal maxim for them). The Bible tells us to keep level heads, even when banks are failing, cryptocurrency's value is indeterminate, and the FED is fighting inflation with everything they've got. Stay abreast of financial news and get a heading in those shark-infested waters.

Steven Manuel takes time to answer a listener’s email about why fathering feels more like drudgery and less like delight. There could be several factors at play including: Are you and your wife on the same page? Do you enjoy your children? (i.e., are you training and disciplining them?) Do you have a family vision? And do you see fathering as part and parcel with your discipleship? Steven comments on being the first in a family to follow the LORD- that’s what a patriarch is! Steven also takes his mic on the road (literally) and gets the input from Michael, a happy father of 8 in this honest episode. And, for YT viewers: a visit to the treehouse!

Steven and Mark interview Ben Kirby of PreachersNSneakers (6:00). We talk about the uneasy relationship Christians have with luxury (13:30), the allure of fame for Christian leaders (25:00), what any church leader has to confront when their work is successful (43:00) and the temptation to stop actual service and pursue fame. Steven also shares his experience with being a low level celebrity in megachurch world, and discusses Abe’s Wallet as a temptation to grasp at popularity and minor stardom. (35:00) Ben also boggles our brains by dropping more celebrity and fashion names than, frankly, we’ve ever heard.

Steven Manuel sits down with Denis Beausejour to talk about grandparenting (4:00). You are going to be SO BLESSED, ENCOURAGED, and CHALLENGED as you have your concept of grandparenting EXPLODED into something waaaaay richer than just someone giving your kid a bike at Christmas (although, hey, bikes are pretty sweet, too). From someone who’s actually doing it, right now, we gain insight into Bible passages that describe grandparents, constructing a physical space for grandchildren (9:45), the eras of life (13:25), The grandparent’s responsibility (17:45), handling generational sin (25:45), how a grandparent’s role is different from a parent’s (37:25), how to pray for grandchildren (42:20), obedience w/re: grandparents (48:45), and a sample schedule for a super engaged grandparenting couple (52:45). (I am astounded by this part.) Denis also shares the financial implications of grandparenting (1:10:40). Anyway hold onto your hats and enjoy the wisdom and intentionality of Denis Beausejour.
NOTE: your family does NOT have to do grandparenting like the Beausejours do! This is ONE inspiring family who’re taking the role seriously and this is THEIR attempt at honoring God with this season of life. You can do it your way. Just let the B’s model help you dream and create vision for your own family-

Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel discuss the concept of the tithe (10:30). Some say we must tithe to this day; some say we are free from this law. Which is it? Didn’t Jesus affirm the tithe? Didn’t it exist before the law was given? They look at the Biblical references, consider the New Covenant context we live in, and give practical advice on what it means for the regular guy trying to please God now. But first! Chicken coop updates, and NBA hot takes (5:30).

Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel discuss examples of multi-generational families. (6:45) They describe the false American narrative, the story of the Kennedys (21:20), the Roosevelts (27:30), the Currys, the Bushes… and friends we know. (47:00) They begin, however, by discussing LinkedIn, the Manuels 20th anniversary getaway and, yes… Steven’s shirt (eye roll).
Want to sweeten and deepen every family, friendship, and business relationship in your life? Want to express love and kindness in a tangible, memorable way? Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel discuss how to give great gifts (3:45), one of God’s hallmarks for celebrations. Mark reviews some stories and tips for gifts given well, in the tradition established by God Himself. This very special episode is interrupted by someone bringing Steven a real-time gift! No really! (31:45-34:49)
Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel sit down and talk about the various versions, successes, and failures in their ongoing attempts to pull off a Passover seder in their homes (and restaurants) (12:00). They also have it out about the subject of Easter (Steven is against, Mark is for). Earlier, Steven gives a review of the Large Families Tour that happened in April (5:40), and Mark describes a recent Twitter kerfuffle that shocked him. [It isn’t all that shocking… but Mark can’t help himself.]

In their last episode, our hosts tackled the Biblical/theoretical concept of retirement, and whether it’s good or not (it is). Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel now finish their one-two punch on retirement with this conversation about tactics (11:20): How do you know when your pile of money is big enough? Is it okay for retirees to take out new mortgages? When should you bring your children into your full financial picture and plan? What if you feel “behind” in your retirement savings? (28:30) At what age is it “too late” to open an IRA? How does Social Security plan into this conversation? (35:00) Could you retire early and still get SS benefits? What if you wait later to collect? Does that number go up? Also, what can retirement age look like for someone who pastors and disciples young men? (45:00) And what about long-term medical care or hospice? And don’t miss the Snappy Review of the entire episode at 54:20! …but first, an important analysis of praise flags and hype men.

Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel discuss retirement (6:50) Why do people feel guilty about this concept? What are some common misperceptions? What is the Biblical purpose of post-earning years? Is church so dull you pinch yourself to say awake? Or so silly and thin on substance that you leave weak and hungry? Steven Manuel sits down with a bunch of guys every other week, and they argue about what the Bible really MEANS. He finds this recurring event so inspiring, exciting, and nourishing that he asks Justin Wolfenberg and Jeremy Pryor to explain the idea behind MIDRASH- a Jewish practice of men gathering to discuss the Scriptures. It’s NOT a “Bible study”; it’s a full-contact family leaders fight club where men get educated, challenged, and sharpened to (if we may) lead their homes and dough like a Biblical boss! This episode features real, live recordings of in-session discussions, and a bit of a how-to guide for men who want to start midrash gatherings in their area.

Mark Parrett and Amelia Parrett have a conversation about their various trials and successes in hiring house helpers. Is it RIGHT for believers to hire outside help for the running of their home? If so, how do you find the people? What kinds of things should you discuss and agree upon before hiring someone? What and how do you pay? Can/should they live with you? The Parretts go into all this and more.

Steven Manuel and his old good friend Jeff Davenport talk about the importance of reading to your children and how fathers can get good at it. [The most important book you can read to your family is THE BIBLE, but other works are great too] (9:00). But first, they waste our time yammering on about Earnest Shakleton and Fuddrucker’s hamburgers. They also spend an inordinate amount of time in the middle of this episode talking about Public Service Announcements shown during 1980s kids television programming (21:50) before eventually getting back on topic (26:40).
They cover: The Scriptural basis of fostering intelligence in children (10:20), The benefits of reading to children (33:15) The ways readers can improve in this important activity, and (44:00) Then give us some examples of good vs bad reading (1:04:00) Then finish by reviewing practical opportunities for dads to read (1:10:15).

Once they get past talk of the markets and fantasy basketball (5:45) and all things LoDo (9:45), Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett finally get around to talking about VACATION (12:00)
Is it in the Bible? It is western laziness run amok? Or does God actually demand it?
If it’s a thing, is there a way to do it better? Can you be STRATEGIC about VACATION? What types of vacations are there? What purposes to they serve? How do vacations complete or complement five capitals? What are some handy tips for making them work?
And wouldn’t it be great if SOMEbody, SOMEwhere would give us some kind of a GUIDE that would help us plan and execute great vacations??? THAT would bring us more luck, even, than black eyes peas on New Year’s Day.

We continue our very occasional series that has been dubbed “Abrahamic Tent Tours”, wherein we visit someone who has applied their Family Vision to the physical space of their home. We believe that wealth is what happens when we follow Biblical financial standards… but that wealth is not the goal. Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett discuss this idea, identifying its cultural ubiquity, its downfalls, and how we can put money (and the expectation of wealth) in its proper place. (8:25) Mark also reviews his time in Austin with Jeremy Pryor et al.

Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett discuss inflation (8:00) and all its implications. How does it start? How does the government cause it, then seek to control it? What are its effects? And for goodness’ sake, how should we respond to it? (1:03:45) They also wax lyric about the new Ford Bronco and give us a LoDoFeb report!
Steven Manuel continues the series on Delighting in Small Beginnings by interviewing a man who started small (with zero dollars to his name) and has built an El Paso mainstay business. Never think you have to have huge financial capital and tons of experience to start a business. You have to have faith (which Fabian has in abundance) and, as you’ll hear him say over and over… WORK HARD!
Steven Manuel and Mark Parrett discuss the value in God’s sight of small beginnings (10:30). We all tend to cheer the ARRIVAL of a dream, the FRUITION of years of faithfulness… but what about the seeds? We need to see that every act of faithfulness is a foundation stone onto which more can be built- in both the spiritual AND financial (40:30) realms. They also spat about whether you can put mozzarella cheese on a taco (3:00).

Steven Manuel and Mark Douglass (his old friend from Texas) talk about the concept of ‘dominionism’ that’s moving around some circles and inspires a new group of books (listed below). This is NOT a thorough dissection of the subject; Mark is a novice at the topic and Steven is just trying to get his head around it. They discuss whether God wants his sons “taking over”, where godly ambition and selfish ambition diverge, and the “pope of Bastrop, Texas,” Bob Long.
Mark Douglass’ community, training center, and equipping confab is The Viceroy Project. Get him out into your neck of the woods to train your families to be stronger for the Kingdom. Seriously. Do it.

Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel begin a series on training children financially. In PART ONE of this series, they discuss the necessity of training one’s children (17:30). The church at large doesn’t talk about this issue, but leaving a godly inheritance necessitates this kind of training. They also get into whether Christianity, as known in the culture, is going to make it or not (1:00), and the cultural issues surrounding Dave Chappelle (9:00).
Mark Parrett reprises his “best books I read this year” gimmick with AW friend Jeff Davenport. They discuss books old and new, fiction and nonfiction, funny and profane- basically, whatever they ingested in the past year. It’s a review of interesting books, and and advertisement for reading in general. it’s 2021’s Book List!
Mark Parrett gives a quick overview on an inflation hedge: iBonds. They’re treasury certificates and you can buy up to $10k worth of them annually. If you’re looking for short-term returns with good interests rates… Listen to this quick primer and consider iBonds!

Steven Manuel sits around a campfire and waxes theological as he describes 5 levels of sonship based on Greek words translated “son” in the scriptures. These levels are not foregone conclusions; they’ll require increased levels of diligence, discipleship, and responsibility. He urges men to apprehend that for which Christ has apprehended them, namely, FULL maturity in Christ. This kind of maturity is not being sufficiently preached in modern evangelical congregations… but the ancient truths must be upheld and reiterated no matter what. Join him at the campfire!

I know I know I know – Dave Ramsey told you never to have a credit card. And for some of you that’s sage advice, but if you’re managing your budget like a boss and don’t have any consumer debt in your life, we think there’s some treats in store for you simply by taking advantage of the amazing free stuff credit card companies are willing to hand out in attempt to snare you. Because you’re running your home like a Biblical boss, we know you’ll skirt the snare and run away with the goodies – so in this episode Mark and Steven discuss their favorite credit cards.

Tune in as old friends kick around a subject every Christian parent will eventually face.

Murray went from reactive, fear-based decision making to the shrewd use of debt and careful research as he evolved from car buying novice to auto financing expert. Learn from Murray and avoid some of the pits into which he fell!
Steven Manuel offers a counter-intuitive perspective on the decision to prefer the livelihood of a business over the comfort or support of an individual. Referencing his days as a hair salon owner, he offers a short lesson in how a business, much like a ministry, is a platform for good works and Kingdom expression. And if that is the case… then the business must be protected!
What should you do when your weekly rhythm runs into a roadblock? This week Mark and Steven discuss how to react when your regularly scheduled Sabbath runs into a conflict or an opportunity. Should you say no to anything different on these set aside days, or is there a way to make your rhythms flexible enough without sacrificing their important place as guide rails for your family?
Dads, you have a narrow window of time in which you can tie the heartstrings of your children. Did you know you need to win their hearts in that window? Most dads don’t know that they need to be hard at work ingratiating themselves to their children RIGHT NOW. In this pod we discuss the why and the how, with guest Seth Spading.
We made it – the finish line for our Build Wealth Like an Ant series. Last week we sung the praises of plain old stocks and bonds (aka ‘boring investments’) and this week we talk about where to put them once you get your hands on a few of those suckers.
Steven and Mark sat down to tell the end-to-end story of the formation of their business, Outpost Advisors. In part 4 we sing the praises of good ol’ boring stocks and bonds. No matter how you plan to build and steward the resources that you’ve been entrusted with, we think that this investment class is worth a good look. There are not many other assets that require so little of your direct efforts in order to grow, and stocks and bonds can provide a fantastic foundation for other wealth-building efforts you might undertake later in life.
Could we be more excited to answer some listener emails right on the air? Nay. In this episode we hit questions about work, mortgages, tithing, generosity, our content and we even talk about meeting up with listeners in person. Give it a listen then write us your own listener email by sending your thoughts to mark@abrahamswallet.com.
Lately I’ve run into more and more talk from companies who will use language of family (which makes my skin crawl), even religion, to convince employees to sacrifice everything at the altar of profits, which they will disguise with language about vision, culture, inclusivity or whatever they think will adequately mask their true intentions. Some companies, I’m convinced, will do this unintentionally because they have drunk their own Kool-Aid at the highest levels. They really believe that the company doesn’t exist to make profits but to, say, “Improve life.” Some, as you’ll see in this episode, do it with very clear (can we say evil?) intentions.
What is the most important ingredient to wealth building once you’ve been wise enough to go out an earn some money? TIME! And it doesn’t matter if you’re investing in stocks and bonds, or start a business. In fact, you starting a business with a solid business plan and two years’ worth of living expenses in the bank will terrify your competitors far more than any degree of hustle or clever social marketing that you might come up with.
Do you reallywant to start building “an enormous arsenal of resources”? Well you’re going to need some dry powder to get that ball rolling, and the way that most of you young bucks are going to accumulate that will be to find a J.O.B. And I’m not talking about a 6-month side hustle. The Normal and Unsexy Job is very out-of-fashion right now, but allow us to vaunt the security that health insurance and a regular paycheck can provide to a young family builder in the early season of their journey. It is not insignificant.
Mark and Steven recorded this short chat on the topic of weekly rhythms and how they provide rails for our households when it comes to our work, parenting, spiritual lives and even our finances.
Goday, we’re going to talk about one specific part of your calling, which is: expressing the heart of the Father. You might already know this, but you’re God’s ambassador. That means, if I may just quote the Bible instead of paraphrasing, that God is making His appeal through you. He intends to use you–your gifts, your personality, your relationships, your career, your money–to explain to the world what He’s like, and make His Name glorious in all the platforms you occupy. One of those platforms, as I’ve said exhaustively in this series, is your money. Money is influence and power and possibility–and the Master wants all of yours, thank you very much.
You wanna run your home and dough like a Biblical boss? Well you need some brothers around you to do that well. And anyone who has been around churchworld for long knows that the standard programming (let’s have coffee and talk about our feelings) feels not so nourishing to the male soul. In this episode, Steven lays out his step-by-step guide for how to create a men’s group that will challenge and grow you along with 3-6 of your best buddies.
From this point on, I’m going to act like living out the administration of the Kingdom is YOUR problem, and that you’ll answer straight to Godon what His Kingdom looks like in your locale. (As if, you know, God was making His appeal straight through you…) So please do not interrupt today’s diatribe with “but my church/religious organization…” I’m not talking about them; I’m talking about YOU.
Flex your muscles, boys. I’ll remind you that a Big Packet of Money will go through your hands this year, and what happens with it is ENTIRELY UP TO YOU. That’s power. I’m going to assume from this point that you understand, based on your thorough digestion of Part 2 of this series, that giving to your community of faith is Quite Important and that we can proceed from there. So let’s do it.
Giving is one of the great blessings God bestows upon His sons. According to Hebrews 2:10, God is in the process of “bringing many sons to glory”… that wonderful process (which concludes with our being entrusted with the Father’s business, a la the Psalm 2-based affirmation of Jesus when He was baptized) trains us in awesome Kingdom skills. But WHERE are we to put that giving dough? To what should we be giving? Here we go….
As America begins to reopen after the COVID shutdown, we’re asking the question, “just how much of the many changes we’ve put in place over the recent weeks should we undo now that we’re seeing the beginnings of a return to ‘normal’ life?” In this episode Steven and Mark discuss fear, how to maintain healthy rhythms that you’ve discovered during the quarantine, and the notion that we steward those just like we would steward financial gains.
Giving isn’t some random, meaningless “good deed” that you do casually and it just goes into God’s Great Big Penny Jar In The Sky which we hope He remembers 100 years from now. It really matters. And it matters NOW. In this BlogPod episode, Steven brings you an ice cold six pack of points to back that strong assertion up!
It’s not every day that you wake up to an extra grand or two in your bank account (thanks Uncle Sam!). In this pod we give you our thoughts on how to make the most of it. For those who haven’t read or listened to our Slush Budgeting thoughts, you can click here to read about the framework we discuss in this episode: https://abrahamswallet.com/2018/04/11/a-framework-for-your-slush-budgeting-202/

Heard of The Tiger King? Of course you have. You’re probably like me and have that steady IV drip of Hollywood coming straight into your family room. To be real clear – we don’t think you should watch this garbage – it’s just that I’m sure you’re well aware of its prevalence right now in the zeitgeist. In need of some triviality recently, I listened to a podcast with one of these Tiger King fellers on it. You’ll never believe this, but I actually heard something kind of pithy come out of this guy’s mouth, about the human capacity for managing problems. It got me thinking, and I’ve concluded there’s (at least) one big lesson that can be learned from the outrageous dumdums over at The Tiger King…
My friend Mark Douglass from The Viceroy Project sent me this book by Amor Townes a few months back about how to live well whilst under house arrest. Given the current state of the world, we thought it would make for good listening as you seek to make your homes places of order and peace during the quarantine. Check out the link below for more from The Viceroy Project:

In this episode Mark and Steven discuss how choosing hope and optimism (which you’re commanded to do anyways) will transform your work, your finances and your home life in a time when the rest of the world seems to be panicking and choosing the opposite emotions.
What does it look like to lead your family during a quarantine? In this episode we walk through specific tactics that you can use in each of the 5 capitals: spiritual, relational, physical, intellectual and financial.
In our second emergency podcast of the past 4 days, we’re coming to you with some tips on how to navigate your likely and unplanned transition from not-homeschooler to homeschool family. Steven has been at this for a while and has some great tips to share from what has worked in his family!
We had to do it guys – instead of waiting until next Wednesday, we wanted to provide some financial insights into what is happening right now and then give you some actionable tips. Whether you have millions of dollars invested or nothing, we’ve got some steps that you can take to shore up your family’s strength in an uncertain time like this one.
In this podcast, Steven sat down with his parents, who have been through multiple life-changing financial disasters, and talked with them about how they responded. You WILL be better equipped to trust the LORD and deal with unexpected bad news after listening to this episode!
This week we have a chat between Mark Douglass and Steven Manuel on Terrence Malik's film, A Hidden Life.
We have so few examples right now of men who truly stand up for right even when they are standing all alone. Heck, most folks who wish to stand up for something can pretty quickly assemble a few hundred like minded standers on Twitter or something. But a movie recently came out that gave us a fantasic example of what it looks like to be willing to play the oppositional role, while submitting wholeheartedly to Jesus.
Before you blast into this episode, first go watch the trailer if you've not seen this movie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJXmdY4lVR0
And after you enjoy this episode, head over to The Viceroy Project for more good stuff from Mark Douglass and his crew.
We are just closing the books on an annual family tradition in which we spend as little money as possible through the month of February. LoDoFeb, as it’s been dubbed, is our rhythm of intentionally saying no. (And, heck, it can be yours, too. Matter of fact, we recommend it. You can have LoDoMar or LoDoNov for all I care, but you’re going to have to deal with more than 28 days of it if you do. Sorry.) As with any form of asceticism, I’m always a bit relieved when it’s over (because I can get back to my indulgent, freewheeling lifestyle), but while I’m inside it, I’m always thinking about it and reflective of its benefits.
A quick BlogPod this week in which Mark will kick you some good books that were read in the past year or so, and also encourage you to get into a habit of reading things that don't appear on your computer screen. For those interested, find links to the books right here:
The Household and War For the Cosmos, by C.R. Wiley
Gospel Patrons, by John Rinehart
Endurance, by Alfred Lansing
The Sparrow, by Mary Doria Russell
Into Africa, by Martin Dugard
I am a Field, by Jeff Davenport
What does it mean to be a multigenerational team on mission? Jeremy Pryor, author of Family Revision, joins Steven to talk about his own fatherhood journey, how our culture has created a counter-narrative to the Biblical ideal of fatherhood and how you can start realigning your own family rhythms and goals with a classical understanding of family. This is one of the best episodes we've had - learn more about what Jeremy is up to at https://familyteams.com/.
I can make you hundreds of dollars in one month by telling you what to NOT do. You will end that month having eaten well, having fun, and at more peace than when you started. Don’t think I can? I can.
Do you remember the good ol’ days when a man who wanted to wander with his nether sexual parts had to leave his abode, physically walk into a seedy part of town, enter a building known by everyone to be a house of ill repute, and THEN and ONLY THEN dive into the dark arts? No? I don’t either… But up until recently (let’s say the past 80 years or so, out of the millennia of human existence), there were effectively NO options for having your illicit fancies tickled (or tickling your fancy… or whatever you call that thing) that didn’t require you to at least risk public exposure. Those days are gone, and we are going to talk about the implications for your household.

Mark and Steven want YOU to join us for Lo Do Feb – the month in which we suck in our financial waistbelts and see just how little we can spend. Whether you use the proceeds to enjoy a little family generosity or to kill off some toxic debts, the month will be good for you.

Steven and Mark sit down to chat through a couple of articles that we wrote on technology and the value of sometimes being bored. As we’re trying a new format here, we’d love your feedback. You’ll notice that we had a technical issue mid-pod that forced Steven to the phone lines, but we think you’ll get good stuff none the less. Please let us know what you think!
Articles we discuss: Alright, let’s talk about smartphones
And: Give Boredom a Chance
We made boys! Kinda how you felt when you sat down for the 32nd session of Netflixing and finally finished The Irishman, we're at the end of our insurance series. In this double whammy, we discuss disability insurance, umbrella policies and provide you with the cautionary tale of Arsenio the Alpaca. Don't be like Arsenio - finish strong and tune in for our parting shot on insurance.
Live from the Aronoff Theatre, and then Live from Steven's treehouse! This week is a longer chat that Steven and his buddy Paul Nichols had about one of our favorite books around these parts - The Benedict Option.
Join Steven in the coffee shop this week as he lets you in on a little secret: God is preeminent over all things, at all times. Even if you deny Him this and temporarily steal His glory, He will eventually be proven right and you will be disappointingly corrected. As first and preeminent, He demands the first part of ANY and EVERYTHING to either be sacrificed or redeemed. The first part matters An Awful Lot To Him.

Join us for an instructional Q&A with mild mannered reporter Jimmy Olsen. First off, permanent insurance – which includes products like whole life insurance and universal life insurance – combines savings and investment with insurance coverage. If you’re already unsure that you’re going to make it to the end of this article, then you can just jot down our thesis statement right here: We believe that investing and insurance are both important and good, but it rarely makes sense to combine the two objectives.
Head over to www.outpostadvisors.net if you want to talk in depth about your own decision process as you navigate complex financial issues!
Operating out of a position of fear will cause you to make stupid decisions when it comes to your money, your family or pretty much any other arena in your life. In this episode Steven and I discuss how we've seen fear stop guys (including ourselves) from making wise moves.
When It comes to life insurance, you most likely fall into one of two camps. Either you’re all jumbled up in your brain about coverage amount, policy types, term vs. whole life, where to title your policy, etc. OR you have no questions at all about insurance and are just now considering that you might need to purchase some. (“Didn’t my employer say I get free life insurance at work? I’m sure that’ll be enough…?”)
In this episode we'll explore four key questions on life insurance and hopefully give you a starting point for how to think about your own needs in this area!
Gents, it’s time we broached a subject that I KNOW impacts all your lives. You’ve either worried about it, scoffed about it, or perhaps given in to it to a degree that concerns you. Because, for faith-guided missiles like us, these waters are murky, and it’s unclear if playing ball is wise or faithless. You know what I’m talking about because it’s in the title. We talkin ‘bout INSURANCE.
Giveaway Alert! Send your insurance questions to mark@abrahamswallet.com and one lucky inquisitor will receive a copy of Jeff Davenport’s new book – I am a Field.
Jeff Davenport is a longtime friend of everyone over here at Abraham's Wallet, and he's just published his first book - I am a Field. You're going to love it, and it's going to make you want to read the whole book, which you can buy using this link right here!

How would you change the way you parent if you knew for 100% certain that your kids would obey the Lord EXACTLY the same way that they obey you? In this (long, live) episode, Steven digs deep into the complexities of how they are striving to raise children in his household. You'll forgive the audio quality because the content is just so sweet! Buckle up for a good one amigos.

Your ability to delay gratification might be one of the most powerful determinants of your success in finance… heck, in all of life.
Don’t believe me? Well, have you ever heard of the marshmallow experiment? Sure you have: some gentlemen at Stanford, back in the late 60s, offered over 600 children a choice. They were sat down at a table and a marshmallow (or similar treat) was placed in front of them. They were told they could eat the marshmallow as soon as the researcher left the room – no problem – OR they could wait 15 minutes and receive a second marshmallow to enjoy. Some kids chomped the treat immediately, others waited and saw a 100% return on their investment.
Why do I care about this experiment? Well, the two gents who were running this experiment followed up on each group over the next several decades and found some fascinating correlations. Those who delayed gratification ended up winning at almost every stage of life in significant ways. They were described by their parents as significantly more competent as adolescents. They had higher SAT scores, faster reaction times in an emergency situation, and were better as adults at controlling their response to alluring temptations.
Have you ever heard of a worship album that requires an explicit tag? We think you’re in for a treat today with this conversation between Craig Dockery and Steven Manuel on what it looks like to move outside of the normal Christian music safety zone and into new, grittier, and perhaps more masculine spaces. This one is a bit outside of our usual programming, but we think you’ll dig it!

No lie: shame is the number one word that men (and women) are using when they talk honestly with us about their money scene. Some of those people have made huge messes of their financial life, but others, by any outside evaluation, are doing great. Shame is an indiscriminate predator.
This week, Steven brings you his thesis on why your home exists. Think about it: your God-oriented home is, like Abraham himself, looking forward to a city “not made by human hands, whose Designer and Builder is God“. You are surrounded by people who don’t see it that way. And your outpost will have to represent a Culture that doesn’t much exist in your town. You’re an ambassador for a coming King. Your job is to produce a few people who understand this Kingdom’s foreign culture as their own… and then export it to as many people as are willing to receive it.
Could there be a lurking trap in the oft-glamorized world of debt freedom? This week I sat down with Scott Dotson and heard something I’ve never heard before in the personal finance media – that there was a hidden, dangerous side to the path he and his wife walked as they aggressively eliminated almost $200k in debt over 3 years. Tune in for some wise words to anyone thinking about how to approach tackling their debt (and don’t worry, we’ll still be rooting for you as you pay that stuff down).
Sukkot is one of the big Jewish holidays that we at Abraham’s Wallet have come to love and value for its impact on our families. It tosses us fathers a veritable softball to smash out of the park: the teaching opportunities are easy, highly physical (easy for little brains to grasp, since they’re so sensory)… and lots of fun. That makes Sukkot a great holiday for the budding family leader seeking to get his feet wet. (“I don’t know how to get into this crazy world of Jewish stuff! The bar for entry is too high!” “No, not really. Just try. Everybody will love you for it. The Wallet will show you how, monsieur.”)
In this episode Mark and Steven come at you live from St. Louis and discuss the importance of having a bias for action. A relevant follow up to last week’s talk about the need to move from ignorance to readiness, this week we talk about what it’s like to move forward in faith even when that requires a bit of risk. Have we been acclimatized to so much safety that we find it difficult to take a risky step forward into the sometimes unknown (even when all signs point to that being the right way)? Here’s our thoughts on moving through that hesitation.
Many of us are like the fool from the parable of the talents in Matthew 25 – we prefer to bury our financial problems and ignore them instead of confronting reality and creating a plan. In this episode, Mark and Steven got together to talk about what it looks like to move from ignorance, to order, to readiness – in your financial life and elsewhere.
In the final episode of our inheritance series, we bring you 25 actionable tips on how to make your family a place where inheritance can be a positive, and not destructive force.
This week is part 2 of 3 on the topic of inheritance. You’ll want to grab some snacks and settle in for scary stories of inheritance gone afoul. After we spin these tales, we’ll wrap everything up next week with 25 tips on how you can set up a household to produce healthy, Biblical inheritance, whether you end up with much or little in terms of material wealth to pass along.
The Bible says we are supposed to leave an inheritance… but does this mean what we think of when we say that word? (hint: no). In this episode, we explore what the Bible means when it says the word inheritance all over the old and new testament, and we think about the implications for a family builder in the various stages of life.
Whether or not you even had any kids, you should listen up as we discuss the benefits of the 529 savings plan as a vehicle for creating multigenerational inheritance – even for yet-to-be-born people! In this episode we give you a quick overview of why 529 plans are powerful and discuss how very few people use them to their fullest advantage.
A little change of pace this week – we bring you an episode that we actually published over a year ago on the blog when we were wondering if we could ever make podcasts. Well, now that you’re here at the OFFICIAL Abraham’s Wallet podcast, we thought you’d like to sit in on this chat between Mark Parrett and Steven Manuel, in whence they cover the following:
Mastering the art and skill of budgeting will result in you ending up with more money than you need to run your household. Did you hear that son? Tis true my hombres – you don’t need a raise or a side hustle—necessarily (though we love them)—to end up with more than you need. You just need to get good at this one thing, and, barring irregular circumstances, you’ll have extra money at the end of the month (which we call slush). Amazingly simple. The converse is also true: if you don’t get good at budgeting, you’ll never end up with extra cash and you’ll usually fall short in some areas, no matter how much money you make.
In this episode we explore some advanced tips on how to budget for the times when you end up with more income than you planned for.

Culture creation in the home is your job, and I’m here to tell you bros that NOTHING–not a daily prayer time, not memorizing Bible verses before bed, not even (fire up the grill for this sacred cow) GOING TO CHURCH–will do for your family, from a culture-creation standpoint, what this one move will do: Honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Listen up as Steven Manuel shares tips on HOW to do Sabbath well and enjoy every minute of it.

What qualifies as luxury spending? Is luxury spending in moderation OK for the Abrahamicly-minded family leader? Is the amount of luxury that is permissible for me relative to my overall income or savings? These questions are great! And super hard to answer! AND, one more thing: if you don’t answer them, our luxury addled culture will answer them for you.

In this episode we share 4 tactics that helped us to pay down $180k in student loans in less than four years. And, they’re not just for student debt! Apply these to any kind of debt and see huge gains!

In this episode, we break from our usual format to bring you a longer form interview with Mr. Michael Foster, one of the founders of the website It’s Good to be a Man. Michael is a serial-entrepreneur who has been in bi-vocational ministry the better part of his adult life. God has blessed him with a beautiful wife and seven children, and they all just relocated to the Cincinnati area this week. Michael can also be found on Twitter @thisisfoster and on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/itsgoodtobeaman/.
In our culture, when the whole family gets together from grandpa all the way to the newborn cousins, you’ll typically see the youngest people in the crew occupying the seat of honor and attention. At Abraham’s Wallet, we think that might be backwards. In fact, we try to make a habit of soliciting the stories from our older generations – over and over and over – until we can all recite them by heart. In this episode, you’ll get to sit in on storytime, as Steven Manuel’s father Roger tells a few of the stories that shaped him into the family-builder that he has become.
Ever heard of a “side hustle”? Sure you have: it’s when you find smart ways to bring in extra income (on the SIDE of your primary source of income) through work and hustle. The side hustle has become a cornerstone for the modern idea of working (because “putting in 40 hours for the same company for 50 years” is as out of fashion as the leisure suit), as scads of people put multiple streams of income together to form their self-selected salary. Well, Lots of blogs will tell you that you need a side hustle, but wouldn’t you rather get paid to recreate?

At Abraham’s Wallet, we believe in the real need for heavy community involvement in your financial life. This is both important and totally foreign to us. In an era where social media, that great destructor of actual relationship, has obliterated most social norms (“Don’t talk about politics with people you don’t know well”? Yeah, that sounds almost quaint, now…), you still don’t see people posting their budget or income on the Facebook. But we Kingdom dudes do things quite a bit differently so…

Can I take a moment to address the dads among us? Today, I’m out to tell you a cautionary tale of a series of events that, individually, lie somewhere in the zone of thoughtless oversight, but collectively form a perfect storm of marital horror. Read up gents, and don’t do what I did.

We’re big on goals here at the Wallet. A cool and amazing promise: once you start setting goals, you’ll be utterly amazed at how you can “speak things into existence” just the way that your Abba does. So pull up a chair and listen to Uncle Stevie tell ya how we do goals…

I’m here to tell you that spending less is not the goal; I’m here to tell you that spending BETTER will revolutionize your life. I mean it. But we can’t even talk about spending until you realize that you don’t own all that stuff and money you’ve managed to pile up. Let’s get to that and we’ll end up dealing with your spending questions along the way.

So you’ve budgeted your heart out. Nice work. And you are spending less than you are earning. Enthusiastic high five! And your budget has revealed to you that you previously thrown off cash like a Kardashian jettisons marriages (We’ll be here all night! Try the shrimp!)? Womp womp. The result of your former ways may very well be (in fact, statistically speaking, almost certainly is…) the American Dream-maker… DEBT! Or you may have mountains of debt and framed papers on your wall to show for it. Or perhaps a lovely 4 bedroom craftsman-style home, replete with open concept kitchen remodel with bleached faux barn wood flooring. Regardless of how you got here… shall we consider how to deal with debt? (Yes, let’s!)

The explicit goal of this website is to equip YOU to be capable and confident of stewarding more (more children, more disciples, more money, etc.). As illustrated in our fabulous, touching, soon-to-be-award-winning Abrahamic drama above, he who cannot give an account of how he has managed what he has should NOT be entrusted with more. (Big definition coming up, get ready…) A BUDGET is a tool for planning and monitoring the financial assets and income streams with which we have been entrusted.

Welcome to the Abraham’s Wallet podcast! In this show, we are turning the written content from the site into audio content for those gents who love what we’re doing here but aren’t all that into reading words on a screen. So, listeners rejoice – you can now bone up on how to run your home and dough like a Biblical Boss, while you also fold laundry, exercise or groom your chinchilla.
In this, episode number one, we explain what it is that we’re out to accomplish here at Abraham’s Wallet.
