The church has spent a lot of time focusing on the fences, the theological, moral, and ideological boundaries that define who is “in” and who is “out.” Yet we believe that Jesus’ promise is that “whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst” (John 4:14). What value do fences have when our faith is nourished at the well? In this 4-week series, we will learn that fences would be better turned into signposts that accurately point toward the well rather than boundaries keeping some in and some out.
Let’s take an inventory of our hearts and our community. Do we focus on wells or fences? Are we insiders or outsiders or a little of both, and does it really matter?
