Even though we are in the dog days of summer and kickoff is still weeks away, that doesn’t mean that we can’t talk about college football. In fact, this is the time where people make fools of themselves by putting their foot in their mouth.
Perhaps no better example of that took place this past week in Tampa with SEC Media Days. It was four days of ass kissing from the media and it gave us some of the dumbest things I have ever heard. Let’s go over some of the highlights, shall we?
We start with the evil emperor himself, Greg Sankey. Some may call him Greg, but I call him the devil. Either way, the guy loves to hear himself talk and has no shortage of yes man behind trying to find every data point known to man as to why the SEC didn’t get every team in the playoff.
Greg decided to kick things off with a bang and suggested that the SEC was considering breaking away from the rest of college football. Even Georgia, head coach Kirby Smart and his bad haircut said the same thing.
Well, what are you waiting for Greg? Do you not already have enough power? Are you mad about not getting enough teams in the playoff? I just don’t get it. Greg is the type of guy who smells his own farts and tells everyone they don’t stink when the truth is the stuff coming out of his mouth is actually worse than what comes out of his rear.
He just can’t help himself and when he doesn’t get his way, he whines and makes empty threats like this. It’s funny because as the week went on, he back tracked a little bit after taking so much heat nationally. If the SEC wants to take their ball and go home, I sure as hell don’t want to get in their way. In fact, I dare them to.
If you thought Sankey was bad, try listening to Missouri head coach Eli Drinkwitz talk for more than 20 seconds. Within minutes of being on the podium, Drinkwitz turned his press conference into a stand-up comedy routine that seemed worse than the taco bell parasite which I would rather have than listen to his awful jokes and jabs.
When asked about the Big Ten winning three straight national titles, he mentioned that part of the reason is that the Big Ten is not required to play a non-conference game against a Power Four school. I guess when Indiana beat Alabama by 35 in the playoffs, it was because of their non-conference schedule?
Then he decided to take shots at the state of Kansas saying “What’s the best thing that comes out of the state of Kansas? I-70. What do you call a good looking girl in Kansas? A tourist.”
But the real reason why he loves to do this is because it takes away from anyone looking into what he’s accomplished at Missouri which is absolutely nothing.
Outside of two seasons (2023 and 2024), Drinkwitz is 25-24 overall and 15-19 in SEC play. So, it’s been two good seasons and four below-average years at best. And if you look closer at 2023 and 2024, he didn’t beat a single team with a winning record in conference play.
So even during those “magical” two seasons, Missouri beat nobody worth a damn. Every time they played someone with a pulse, they folded up faster than you can spell M-I-Z-Z-O-U.
Yet, the people of Missouri didn’t see it that way, and they ended up giving him a six-year, $64.5 million contract extension late in the 2025 season when he was 2-4 in conference play.
And to nobody’s surprise, his four conference wins came against teams that had a combined SEC record of 3-29. So who is laughing now?
Finally, is the golden boy himself, Joe Freshwater, I mean Lane Kiffin. He started talking about the way the playoff committee should be looking at teams from different conferences. Kiffin said, “Until we can get into a world where people can actually look at teams and say, that team that is 9-3 with their schedule is a better team than that 11-1 in a different conference, which now I think we aren’t even close to doing that, I think it causes problems.”
Should a 9-3 SEC team get in over a 11-1 Big 12 team or ACC team? Hell no. Especially, when stats like ESPN’s FPI exist that reward SEC teams for playing a cellar dweller in their own conference more than if they were to play a top tier team from the Big 12 or ACC.
Strength of schedule should only carry so much weight. If two teams have identical records from different power conferences, then sure that can be used as a legitimate point but between an 11-1 and a 9-3 team, there shouldn’t even be a comparison to be had.
