Is it me or is anyone else getting tired of talking about Brendan Sorsby? It’s exhausting but when he’s making headlines every week, I don’t really have a choice, and it feels like I am being held hostage by Brendan Sorsby. Maybe I should sue him. I am kidding of course. Well, maybe.
The NCAA denied him originally and then denied his appeal, which looking back means absolutely nothing. All Sorsby did this week was go in front of a Texas judge and got what he wanted. It was as simple as that.
One of the things I found odd during the ruling said that Sorsby “demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this Court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 Football season.”
They made it sound like he was in a bad car accident, and he needs to play college football for his mental health. I mean, what are we even doing anymore? Brendan Sorsby bet on his own team, even in games he played in for thousands and thousands of dollars, got caught, got help, got banned and let back in faster than you can say the word lawsuit.
This situation tells me all you need to know about how powerless the NCAA truly is. It shows that you can literally do anything you want and still be eligible. Want to gamble on your own games? Sure, go ahead, want to do drugs? Sure, go ahead, oh you commit a felony? Sure, come back and play. You can do whatever you want without any consequence.
The only rule is that there are no rules. This is the wild west out here and until the NCAA steps up and grows a pair, or we get politicians involved, nothing is going to change. If you don’t like what the NCAA tells you, go to your local judge and get it fixed.
College football is a broken system. As much as I enjoy it, I also hate what it’s turned into. It’s no longer about getting an education, playing for the school you love, the logo, the traditions, none of that crap. It’s about money. How much can I get paid, how many wins can we buy. It’s not a sport; it’s a business and the only thing that matters is the bottom line. And if we continue on this path, this house of cards will fall.
As the only collegiate sport being played right now, it’s mid-June and that can only mean one thing. It’s time for Omaha baby and if you are a baseball junkie like me then this is the closest thing to Heaven and Iowa for that matter.
West Virginia is the lone Big 12 team left in the College World Series, and they will be joined by Troy, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, and Alabama. The Mountaineers will face Troy in game one on Friday afternoon, which is about the best draw one can ask for.
Is West Virginia the most talented team in the field? Probably not but they are red-hot right now and that’s all that matters. I expect Mountaineer fans to pack Omaha, drink a ton of beer and Rocco’s Jello Shots, and make a run. The Big 12 has your back West Virginia, make us proud.
