This 2019 episode strikes very relevant today; Phil Di Bella delves deep into a rather intriguing question: Why do we see numerous cafes and restaurants shutting their doors, even as new ones keep springing up? As we get ready for the festive season, Phil provides a comprehensive analysis of the factors at play in the hospitality sector and how it affect us, the consumers.

Main Points Addressed:
🔸 Supply and Demand: The current oversupply stems from outdated planning laws and developers pushing for more retail space, often leading to an abundance of food and beverage outlets.
🔸 Dilution Effect: More cafes with no unique selling proposition means dilution. Even if a cafe isn't popular, it still takes away business from others, leading to closures.
🔸 Consumer Behaviour: With rising expenses, consumers expecting more for less is unsustainable. Understand the actual cost behind that cup of coffee or plate of bacon and eggs.
🔸 Controllable vs. Uncontrollable Costs: Increasing costs, especially those beyond the control of cafe owners (like wages), are affecting profitability.
🔸 Understanding Developers: Many new establishments are opening because developers offer huge incentives to have operational businesses in their spaces.

Key Takeaways:

  1. The oversupply problem arises from outdated planning laws and developer incentives.
  2. Many cafes lack a unique selling proposition, leading to business dilution.
  3. Consumer expectations need to be managed; prices reflect rising uncontrollable costs.
  4. Hospitality is pivotal for Australia, providing skills to youngsters and acting as a country's backbone.
  5. Compassion and understanding of the industry's challenges are essential when enjoying hospitality.

Phil passionately shares that hospitality has been a significant part of his life. This industry is not just about food and drink; it’s about experiences, skills, and the backbone of many communities. But with the current challenges, its sustainability is at risk.

When you're next sipping your coffee or savouring a meal out, take a moment to appreciate the intricacies of the industry that serves you. Understand the value, be patient, and support your local cafes and restaurants.

📢 Your Action: Next time you're in your favourite cafe or restaurant, appreciate the value they bring. Understand the costs behind their services. Share this knowledge with friends and family to ensure a sustainable future for hospitality.

📍 Welcome to another insightful episode of FlashCast by PDB with your host, Phill Di Bella. In this re-uploaded episode, we delve into the world of leadership and shed light on some prevalent misconceptions. Leadership, often regarded as a buzzword, is frequently misunderstood. Join us as we explore and debunk these myths to gain a deeper understanding of what true leadership entails.

💡 Key Takeaways:

  • Misconception #1: Leaders are born, not made. Contrary to popular belief, leadership is a teachable skill that anyone can develop. While some innate traits may contribute to leadership abilities, effective leadership is primarily nurtured through communication and continuous learning.
  • Misconception #2: Leaders are charismatic. Charisma does not define leadership. Authenticity is the key. Not all leaders possess charismatic personalities, and true leadership lies in being genuine and true to oneself.
  • Misconception #3: Leaders simply delegate and don't have to work. Leadership is not about delegating all tasks but leading by example. The best leaders are hardworking individuals who actively engage and contribute alongside their team members.
  • Misconception #4: Leaders are defined by their position, rank, or title. Leadership is not solely tied to a formal role or authority. True leaders can be found at all levels of an organization, and their impact often transcends hierarchical boundaries.
  • Misconception #5: Leadership is a rare ability reserved for a select few. Leadership qualities can be found in every individual. Whether at home, school or in the workplace, everyone has the potential to lead and inspire others, regardless of age or formal designation.
  • Misconception #6: Leadership is easy. On the contrary, leadership is a challenging journey. It requires constant self-improvement, embracing responsibility, and learning from experiences. The best leaders strive for personal growth and continuously work towards creating a better tomorrow.

✨ In conclusion, leadership is not confined to predefined notions or limited to a chosen few. It is a skill that can be learned, developed, and applied by anyone. Authenticity, hard work, effective communication, and a commitment to personal growth are vital components of effective leadership. By debunking these misconceptions, we empower ourselves to become better leaders and inspire positive change.

As you may be aware from previous podcasts, Phil is dad to a 14yr old daughter and a 12yr Son. One of the many subjects that Phil and his wife cover with their children is Gratitude and how it is important.

Carole Dweck is a great resource for discovering the growth mindset.

Children are sponges, and what they see us do, they will mimic and learn from.

If your child is not ‘performing’ to expectations, it usually is because what they are doing is what we ourselves as adults have shown them.

So, how do we breed gratitude into our children?

Teach and show your children how. Actions speak louder than words.

When you are out with your children, pause and take note of different things, and ask them to list a reason why they are grateful for that thing.

Teach them that it doesn’t matter who the person is, but to show thanks and to say thanks at any given opportunity.

Listen in to Phil as he talks us through different ideas and tactics we can embrace, to help our children breed gratitude.

To terminate or not to terminate, that is the question.

After 21yrs in business, Phil still hates firing an employee, and now with the current laws and regulations, it is becoming increasingly difficult to get rid of an employee.

There are 3 zones that all workplaces and employers need to navigate. The No Go Zone, the grey zone, and the Ok Zone.

Not only are these 3 zones applicable to the firing of employees, but to the laws that can affect your business.

One of the suggestions Phil offers is if in doubt ask an expert and get guidance. There are now hotlines available where you can ask for such advice.

As always, the rule of Measure Twice Cut Once becomes applicable, and if you cut wrong it can harm your company in the long run.

Another avenue that you can use is to reach out to the Coffee Commune.

Speaking from experience, with having 2 teens in the house, both Phil and Gianna tackle anxiety from not only the viewpoint of being parents but also as survivors of anxiety themselves.

For Phil, his anxiety happens when his mind and body fail to sync up. Finding himself fighting the classic signs of Panic Attacks, Phil has learned that the best way to get his brain to relax and match the speed of his body is through meditation. Taking those deep breaths and grounding himself, letting his brain realise that it’s time to slow down from the 100 miles per hour speed it normally runs at, to a much easier and slower speed.

Gianna then opens up about her own battles in her early 20s, and not being able to afford support, having to rely on informal support in the form of her sister. With every negative thought, Gianna’s sister would challenge her to turn it into something positive. Gianna also goes into how reading and teaching herself about the brain and its functionality has helped her with her anxiety.

With the speed of the world and our brains not being able to keep up with the constant changes, listen to parents Phil and Gianna talk about the 4 steps to take to help reign in anxiety and the 7 steps that not only parents but all caregivers should be on the lookout for in their teen or tween, that show when they are battling anxiety.

Listen and learn how Phil has tackled this with his own children Arley and Anika.

Schools teach children mostly to use the left side of their brains - the logical, analytical and information side but what they don't encourage is the use of the right side - the creative side.

Phil gets his son involved on the holidays with small projects that incorporate both sides of the brain. Just last holidays Arley started up his own small coffee business. How? Listen to Phil as he discusses the logistics and how from little things, big things have grown.

Everything though is in moderation, and learning a trade is coupled with some fun, exciting and interesting pastimes.

Phil also lets us in on his very own childhood and how he learnt appreciation, not just for money but also for people and moments.

Remember - Children have different size feet, and not one shoe will fit all. How can you, then, as the parent, learn to adapt to what your child needs as they grow into successful adults?

Listen to Phil and pick up some handy hints to help you solve the mystery of the teen.

An interesting point is highlighted at the beginning of this Flashcast when Phil highlights that we are often able to point out things in others that we are blinded to in ourselves, and how a psychiatrist would say that the faults we see in others are often our very own faults.

Phil brings in author and mindset engineer Joe Dispenza, and how being aware of your thoughts and how to file them appropriately can help you in your day to day dealings.

The great thing about moving into a senior school – grade 7, is learning more about people and their personalities. Finding themselves and who they are, and what works for them in the education world.

Listen to Arlee as he talks about what he is doing outside of school, which includes working and learning with Ian ‘Powerhouse’ Jacobs. Jacobs is not only training him in Thunderball but also reinforcing some life lessons and grounding techniques.

Listen to Phil discuss the difference between mindsets, and how we can learn the difference between a positive mindset and a negative mindset.

Using both of Dr. Caroline Dweck’s and Dr. Joe Dispenza’s theories that are highlighted in their books, Phil gets us to challenge our own mindsets.

One of the mindsets that are challenged is that of a victim’s mentality, and how we approach things in 2 different ways.

1.      When in a positive mind frame – Embrace and Say: Tomorrow will be better than today

2.      When in a negative mind frame – Play the Victim: Allow the problem to overwhelm.

How do you challenge your negative mindset? What methods can be employed? Do you focus on the destination or the journey?

These questions and more will be answered in this FlashCast.

The customer is NOT always right. They are the most important part of the transaction but they're not always right.

The customer deserves, and requires, to be treated amazingly well, nevertheless always you'll have customer complaints; all is feedback and should be taken accordingly, as data, so analyse it and the plan your strategy to solve it. All organisations need customer feedback, so make sure there is a channel to get feedback, so you tackle issues before they become a complaint.

In order to expedite a complaint process Phil Di Bella is giving us three tips:

  1. Understand the full context of the complaint
  2. Always propose a resolution (remember the "yes if' mindset
  3. Show respect

At one point in our lives most of us have been through it, but if we can understand what motivations they might have, it will guide us on how to react to it. some of the reasons can be:

  • When some people are insecure they tend to feel better about themselves when they can put themselves above others.
  • They can be on a stage in their lives where something is make them feel miserable
  • They feel insignificant, thinking they haven't achieved anything
  • They have a victim mentality

But most importantly, how to deal with it? here are a few tips that can help

  • Ignore everything, make a clean cut from the whole situation
  • If it annoys you, stand up to them, approach them
  • Don't let the whole situation intimidate you, not everybody has to like you
  • There is a lot of crazy people out there, if you spot them, just stay away

In the end, remember that other people's opinions don't define who you are, only you can do that, so don't let negative comments get into your head and define you.

Phil got invited to speak on the “Mindset Week” at the Aspley State High School, so in this episode he is sharing with us some of the most relevant questions he got asked there, and gives us some tips on how to improve our growth mindset.

Phil tells us the story of how he first learned about mindset by watching how and why people failed, and seeing them repeat the same mistakes over and over, filled with pessimism, with no evolution or growth strategy.

Then he finishes with tips to improve our mindset, like putting ourselves in constant learning mode, being aware of our thoughts because “you are what you think’, and recommends us to make growth mindset part of our daily routine, make sure we are surrounded by positive, honest people, and don’t judge and value ourselves based on others and their thoughts of us.

“Everything we hear is an opinion, not a fact. Everything we see is a perspective, not the truth.” — Marcus Aurelius

What to do to keep opinions at bay? In today ‘s episode Phil gives us his take on how to manage other people's opinions, through these 7 easy takeaways:

People will always have a judgment or opinion about someone

Your self worth isn't defined by others think of you, but you

They don't know your journey,

Trust your intuition, know yourself

You will never please everyone, stop trying

If is good for someone else, doesn't mean is good for you

Take the high road, we’re here to thrive

Sometimes it will affect you, that's ok, take it, absorb it, analyze it, and move forward.

In today’s episode Phil explores the meaning of friendship, what makes us get closer with other people? What makes them important? The core of it relies on values, and a “what can I do for you” attitude? so ask yourself, do the friends around you have a “what can I do for you attitude, rather than what can I get from you? If the answer is no, then this is an opportunity to practice affectionate detachment.

Today I want to talk about the beautiful concept of leadership, and tell me how many times do you hear someone call themselves a leader in the world and I can go to town with examples with this when executives teachers schooling and, the one I use a lot and have to be careful with, is politicians. Everyone’s a self-proclaimed leader. Just ask them. Everyone believes that they’re a leader if they can talk, you know strong and tough and motivate and get out the front and drag people to success and all the rest of it; well simply put, I’m going to talk over the next few minutes about my concept of leadership but I’m going to give you a resource to go to, It’s been my go to for many years that I put up when I’m speaking and it’s go to YouTube and it’s lessons from a dancing guy, there you’ll get a very very clear and great example of what leadership is all about. And it’s a model that I followed for many years and simple to me the best leaders in the world lead from beside or behind. What they do is that they set very very clear vision and destinations for people so that people can emotionally buy into what they’re doing and then they set the parameters so something that I work really hard on in my companies and when I’m consulting to others is to say people make sure that you know let people know where and what the destination looks like and then make sure that you’ve got very clear banks of the river and at times as banks of the river have to come in and narrow sometimes they can widen your trick as a leader is to stand beside people and behind them and guide them towards the destination whilst moving those you know the banks of the river closer and wider when necessary.
