Episode Recap Guest and author, Perry Covington, shares his experience publishing his books series, with guest interviewer and aspiring comic writer, Caleb Arnold.
The Creative Writing Process Once Perry has an idea for a book, he likes to outline his books on a big white board and write it out chapter by chapter. Occasionally, he finds that the character drives the story and the story evolves over time.
Creating a Following on Social Perry believes it’s all about the fans. From that angle, it’s really important to have a presence on social media. He started out with nothing but after being published and making sales he has grown. Although he is a published author, it’s on the author to do most of the marketing for their book.
Social Strategy You should know what platforms are being utilized by which demographics. Then tailor your content to match those demographics. For instance, kids are not using Facebook, but they are using Instagram. It’s honestly a trial and error process, according to Perry. The important thing is to know who you are marketing too and stick to the best platform. Otherwise your marketing can consume your life.
Networking Perry prefers face to face networking above any of form of networking. He is attending Nerd Con this year. He loves attending these events to meet the passionate fans, answer questions, receive critique, and sign books. Meeting the fans can help you power through creative block. “It can be intimidating when someone reads your book in front of you because obviously you want them to enjoy it.”
Books to Movies Naturally, Perry prefers books adaptations over movies. However, he recently stopped comparing them side by side and recognizes they are individually great in their own way. Sometimes things need to change for the big screen for a good reason. For instance, Wolverine’s bright yellow costume.
Balancing Life and Work Perry has two daughters, a wife, and a day job on top of writing. His methods involve staying up late and drinking lots of coffee.
