Episode Recap: Passion is important but paying the bills is imperative. Get actionable tips to take action in making your place in the design marketplace so you can start making money.

Getting Your Family On Board First

If you are working while saving money for your passion, this makes things a little easier. If you are NOT currently working and are trying to build your business from the ground up, it is wise to have a discussion with your spouse about setting a budget or a specific timeframe for when you need to start making income before you have to get a day job or part time job to supplement income.

These are NOT easy discussions and you may have to have them a few times. Show how your goals in your business can help you obtain goals in your marriage. IE: Saving for vacation or serving the community.

Find Someone Who Has Obtained Your Goal Before

Find someone that works in a field that is related to yours or someone who has already achieved something you want to do. Reach out to them and share what you are most struggling with. Their time is precious, so try to only ask one question at a time.

Share That You Are Available

If you are transitioning from one job to another, it’s ok to let people know you are in transition. Everyone goes through transition phases. If you are too prideful to let people know, you might be missing out on opportunities for work or clients.

Be Positive – Don’t Sound Desperate

Good: “I’m independent but I’m looking for more opportunities.” “I love what I do and I’m looking to grow.”

Bad: “Are you looking to hire someone? Let me tell you 20 things I specialize in…”

You attract what you put out. Act confident.

Act Even When It Feels Pointless

How do you know if you are working on the right things each day to bring in income and build business? You don’t always know but you can evaluate what you’re doing and ask yourself, “Is this giving me any return?” If it’s not, adjust. If you feel like the work you are putting in is harder than it should be, perhaps you underestimated the work it takes to get to where you are trying to go. Persistence is key.

Exodus 14:13-15 Moses tell his people, “Don’t worry God will save you!” God replies, What are you waiting for? Get moving a divide the sea!

Feeling Lost? – Ask Yourself These:

  • What is my goal for my job and career?
  • Is this action in line with my goal and how is it bringing me closer to my goal?
  • Do I need to focus on this right now?
  • Can I save this task for a later time?
  • Is there something more important I should be doing?
  • Am I letting distractions getting in the way?
  • Can I afford this – does it fit my budget?

When you can evaluate and redirect your energy, you show competency in your business.
