The word shastra, in the Hindu tradition, denotes the Vedas including the Upaniṣads and all the allied sacred texts such as the Vedanga-s, Itihasa-s, Puraṇa-s and Smriti-s. In the Abrahamic traditions, the word scripture means a book which the God reveals for the guidance of all humans through a chosen person, called prophet, at some particular time in history. Veda shastra, however, manifests at the very beginning of creation and so there is never a time when humanity is bereft of them. Vedas become manifest as impersonal knowledge and become an object of cognition to a rishi. This video discusses the differences between these two words and the reasons why they cannot be regarded as synonymous.
