Color is a big factor when it comes to design. It not only changes the appearance but also carries an identity of a design or brand. To make your design stand out, you can apply various techniques of color combinations. And a Gradient is one of them.
In this article, we'll cover how to create a transparent gradient in Illustrator. We can divide this work into two parts:
The Panels You Will Use to Create a Transparent Gradient in Illustrator Gradient Panel: In this panel, you can apply the gradient to your artwork and edit or adjust the gradient. To use this panel, you need to enable it from the Window menu. Go to Window and select Gradient. * Transparency Panel: This panel helps you adjust an object's opacity. It also allows you to choose a blending mode from several options. To enable this panel, go to Window and select Transparency*.
Transparency PanelGradient PanelCreating Transparent GradientLet's begin the step-by-step tutorial on how to create a transparent gradient in Adobe Illustrator. I'll use this Azulejo pattern from Vecteezy.
Step 1Place the image or the design object you want to apply the gradient to in your artboard. You cannot add any other design element after adding the gradient. If you have more than one element in your design, you must group them first.
Step 2 After placing the artwork, select the Rectangle Tool and draw a rectangle over the design. While drawing the rectangle, make sure it covers the entire design.
step 3 Click the Gradient Panel while the rectangle is selected and apply a gradient. In this panel, you'll have different gradient options such as linear gradient, radial gradient, and freeform gradient.
Step 4Select the Selection Tool from the left toolbar or use the shortcut key (V) to activate it. Now select the rectangle using the Selection Tool.
Step 5With the rectangle selected, go to Edit from the overhead toolbar and choose Cut. You can also press Ctrl+ X to cut the rectangle.
Step 6Select the image and go to the Transparency Panel. You'll find it on the right side of your screen if you have enabled it from the Window menu.
Step 7Click on Make Mask from the transparency panel. Don't worry about the skeleton figure of your design you see at this point, as this is not permanent.
step 8 Click on the black box in the transparency panel and paste the rectangle here. The gradient is now applied to your design.
Editing the GradientYou can edit the gradient you applied anytime you want. You can also change the type of gradient after applying it. The gradient can be changed using the gradient panel or the gradient tool.
Gradient PanelInside the Gradient Panel are a few types you can choose. There is a gradient slider beneath the stroke and angles fields. Drag the white and black circles to change the shades of black and white. There is another pointer in the middle of the slider that will decide how black and how much white you want in your gradient.
Gradient ToolThe Gradient Tool can be found in the left toolbar, and the shortcut key for this tool is (G). This tool has almost the same function as the gradient panel. The only difference is that this tool will allow you to adjust the gradient directly on the canvas.
A gradient is a fun way to make your design look cool and unique. You can explore various designs using the combination of various gradient styles and your creativity.
