We are listening to the first chapters from the novel Hungarian Rhapsody by Wendy Teller. The Hungarian Women’s Rights movement of the early 1900s is the backdrop for this story of two young radicals. Teller’s straight forward narrative style pulls the reader into the story and highlights the setting of the novel and the personalities of the characters.

Hungarian Rhapsody, the first book in a trilogy, is heavily researched and based on the story of Teller’s family. The novel’s protagonist, Ella, is modeled on her grandmother. She decided to turn it into fiction so she would have the leeway to explore the emotions of the characters. She hopes listeners get a flavor for that slice of time and society that Ella grew up in, and an understanding that even with all their privileges, the women were still considered chattel.
