Apple unveiled an updated version of its iPad tablet with a brighter screen on Tuesday, at the cheapest price ever for a full-sized tablet. The California-based company is widely expected to unveil an update to its flagship iPhone this fall that might have new features such as wireless charging, 3-D facial recognition and a curved display. In the meantime, along with the new iPad, Apple announced a variety of incremental updates and releases, including a new app for creating videos and sharing them with friends. The new app, along with extra iMessage features released in recent years, pushes Apple closer to competing with the features in social networking apps like Snapchat. It’s rare for Apple to release a full-sized iPad at such a low price. The new edition differs from its pricier sibling in several ways. It isn’t compatible with accessories like the Apple Pencil or SmartKeyboard; it’s missing the iPad Pro’s sharper camera and 4K video capabilities, offering a smaller camera, but it’s still plenty powerful for those who intend to browse the Web, check email, stream Netflix and play games. The discounted tablet could be a move to boost sales in an Apple product line that’s been steadily declining. In its most recent earnings report, Apple revealed that total iPad shipments dropped by 19 percent, while revenue from the tablets was down by 22 percent. Offering a cheaper option could give Apple fans and tablet shoppers a more compelling reason to upgrade from an older model or a mini.
