The US White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) recently advised federal departments and agencies to promote free, immediate access to data that supports publications of federally funded research (1). However, the guidance did not address federal science journals’ policies regarding access to data and computer code used in peer-reviewed articles. Federal journals should adopt the free, immediate data access policy of OSTP as well as the code access policies of top independent journals.
