At age 37 Carly Moosah was diagnosed with breast cancer and soon discovered she carried the BRCA1+ gene. She had her breasts removed and reconstructed from her tummy tissue. With a hip-to-hip scar and a new belly button, Carly has a ‘smiley face of scars’. Now, every day she thanks her body for everything, and life has become Carly's biggest privilege and gift. We can get knocked again and again, things can get incredibly hard and dark and we can feel battered. But, if we just hold on to tiny little things, and some days all we can do is crawl, those little movements move us forward. Since her diagnosis, Carly has learnt how to show up, be appreciative and grateful for even the most difficult days. Having the knowledge that she has got through some incredibly difficult times, ‘this too shall pass’ are four words she falls back on during harder moments. Having accepted life happens for you and not to you, her darkest times have ended up being the most enlightening. Acceptance is difficult; being diagnosed with breast cancer at 37 was not part of Carly’s grand plan. But, the acceptance of letting go of whomever we thought we were meant to be, and connecting with whoever we are, can be exciting and liberating. Carly’s past was all stories she has about herself, and now she can be whomever she wants to be, starting today.
