Faith can look strong when life is going well, but testing reveals how deep our roots really are. In Luke 8:4-15, Jesus warns that shallow faith may flourish for a season but will wither when suffering and trials come. Deep roots are built before the storm, so the question is whether your faith is strong enough to remain when life gets hard.

Every orchard tells a story, and so does every life. Drawing from Jesus' teaching in Luke 6, we learn how the seeds we plant, the influences we allow, and the condition of our hearts shape the fruit we produce. God desires more than outward religion—He wants a transformed heart that reflects His grace, truth, and love to the world around us.

Jesus never says to ignore the speck in someone else's eye. Instead, He calls us to examine our own hearts first, extending the same mercy, forgiveness, and grace that we hope to receive from God. Jesus’ definition of blessing looks radically different from ours. In Luke 6, He declares blessing over the poor, hungry, grieving, and rejected while warning those who place their hope in wealth, comfort, pleasure, and approval. What looks like a debate about Sabbath laws becomes a defining moment about who Jesus really is—Lord over it all. In this teaching, we dive into Paul's sobering warning to Timothy about the rise of false teachers and the dangerous attitudes that will characterize people in the "last days." According to Paul, this era spans from Christ’s ascension to His eventual return—and we are living in it now.

Paul doesn’t hold back. He gives a list of 19 specific actions and attitudes that will become more and more prevalent. These traits weren’t just for some distant future—they were already threatening the church in Ephesus, and they still plague our world today.

One of the most chilling indictments Paul gives is that these people will have a “form of godliness but deny its power.”

They may sound spiritual. Look spiritual. Study deeply. But they are not transformed. They are void of the Spirit of God, and their faith is ultimately rejected—not because they rejected faith, but because true Faith rejected them.

Paul once again specifically addresses the dangers of quarreling in the church. We all know of people who just like to argue over things that do not promote the work of God, and apparently this was a significant issue in the church in Ephesus. Yet, while we may find it annoying, Paul declares it to be deadly. He says it spreads like gangrene, leads to ungodliness, to a departure of the truth, and destroys faith.

The Gospel: The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus, and all that we gain from it. It is so glorious that it is worth anything that it costs us…even suffering and death.

As Paul launches into the final letter he would write to Timothy, he begins with a word of encouragement. He reminds Timothy of his calling…and he reminds Timothy of his giftedness…and lastly he reminds Timothy of the Spirit that God has given him.

And then Paul invites Timothy into his suffering. Suffering that is worth it because of the grace of God that was given through Jesus. Suffering isn’t something to be ashamed of because we serve a savior who suffered.

Paul told Timothy not to be ashamed because Paul was in prison. And to be willing to join him in his suffering. And Timothy would suffer. Hebrews 13:23 indicates Timothy was eventually put in prison himself.

God’s plan from the beginning was that faith was to be passed down from generation to generation. The old testament is filled with commands to share with your children the great things God has done. In Malachi 2:15, God says the reason God takes 2 and makes them 1 in marriage is so that they will produce Godly offspring.

Both Paul and Timothy come from faith filled families. Paul was a Jewish man who’s ancestors served God faithfully. Timothy faith came from his mother and grandmother. His life was changed by their faithfulness.

As Paul wraps up his letter to Timothy, Paul gives him a charge. To flee from the sins that entraps so many pastors, the pursuit of money. And encourages him to instead pursue righteousness, godliness and the like.

It isn’t enough for us to flee something…we also have to pursue something.

Paul implores him to fight the good fight of faith. Keeping faith is a fight. Apparently Paul doesn’t believe it will just happen. But it is something that must be fought for. He also places the onus on Timothy to “take hold of the eternal life” that comes with the good confession of faith.

It is clear that Paul does not assume that one can just coast to the finish line of faith but you must persevere to the end.a

Paul ends the book of 1 Timothy by giving instructions to those who are slaves. Slavery was a common part of life in the Roman Empire and Ephesus would have been no exception. What makes this text interesting is that there are no corresponding instructions to the masters in the church (at least in 1 Timothy). However, Paul does instruct a master in the church in a letter to Philemon.

The letter of 1 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul to a young pastor named Timothy to help him understand how the church would operate. It makes perfect sense that Paul would address the expectations that come with being a pastor (also known as an elder, shepherd, and overseer).

There are some benefits, such as being paid for your work: Paul makes it clear that the one who’s job is preaching and teaching should be compensated. Accusations against the pastor are to be corroborated before they are to be believed. However, when a pastor is found to have sinned, he is to be reproved in public.

“What do you suppose people might think we are ‘training for’ just by watching our life this week?”

“Paul uses the language of sweat and struggle: ‘we labor and strive.’ We often think of that as a call for all believers—but what are some quiet, behind-the-scenes ways that pastors in our church labor and strive that many of us might not even see?”

“If we had eyes to really see the weight our pastors carry, how might we respond differently?

Paul, writing to a local body of believers in Ephesus writes, “submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.”

This command isn’t written just to the women, or even to the wives, it is written to the church. Our general disposition toward one another should be one of submission. With that general understanding in mind, Paul moves specifically to speaking to wives and husbands. If you are in Christ, you have been given a spiritual gift meant to be used with and for the body of Christ. The big idea of these verses is that the body is made up of many parts, but they are designed to work together. The goal of Paul's exhortation here is that the body would be unified and mature.

In the western church, we often see church as an event we attend, instead of a body to which we belong. In a body, every part is important. If one part hurts, the whole body is affected. If one part is missing, the body doesn’t function as it was designed. Do we see the church, and our role in it, with that kind of importance?

As we enter into chapter 4, the letter now takes a turn. Paul begins to move from theological to practical. He shifts from reminding us of what Christ has done, to what we should do because of what Christ has done.

In Paul's day the world was divided up in two groups, Jews and gentiles. The two did not mix, there was hostility between them. The Jews believed they were the ones who had received all the blessing of being God’s people…the gentiles had been left without hope.

But God’s design from the beginning was to take the two and make them one…and he did so through the blood of Christ.

Chapter 2 begins with Paul teaching the good news, but to accurately teach the good news, people need to hear the bad news. Paul shares the bad news first. There is a cultural idea that we are all good people: since we are all children of God we must do something really bad to have that status removed. "Good” is our default position., and we have to behave our way to “bad.”

However, that isn’t what scripture teaches. We begin as those under the wrath of God, and without Christ, that is where we will remain.

This week our study of the church of Ephesus moves us into the book of Ephesians. This letter was likely written around 60 AD. Paul left his ministry in Ephesus around 56 AD. He went to Jerusalem and was arrested and eventually was taken to Rome. It was from his Roman detention that Paul writes this letter back to the people he spent over 2 years doing ministry with. The letter to the Ephesians begins with a reminder of all that comes with being “In Christ”. This term is used in some fashion 9 times in the first 14 verses.

We often think of the ministry of the Apostles as always being adventurous and excited, filled with feats of bravery and miraculous events. Yet while that is often true, there is more to the story. In Acts chapter 19 we find Paul fulfilling his promise to return to Ephesus. He meets some disciples there, who, like Apollos, didn’t quite get the baptism piece right, so Paul corrects them. Then he does what he always did, he started preaching in the synagogue sharing about Jesus. He did this for 3 months. And when he wore out his welcome, he rented a local classroom…and preached and teached everyday for two years! Two years of faithful gospel proclamation.

Well hey, welcome to the Becoming Better Podcast here at QuadCity. I'm Josh, I'm the host for today's episode.

Myself, Jason, and a new guest to our podcast, Brad Greene who is new to our staff will be joining us as we talk about week one of our new series we just kicked off this past Sunday, "Transformed."

"Transformed" is all about the heart and Jesus' teaching around generosity and our heart. And it ties in with this journey that we've been on as a church through Excel. So we are at the midpoint of our journey and as Jason mentioned as he kicked off the sermon, last year was focused on what God wants to do through us, but this series for these four weeks are all looking in at what God wants to do IN us. How God wants to transform us, which all of us would say we want if we are disciples of Jesus, that we want to be better.

So as always if you haven't yet listened to the sermon this week, listen to that because it will help make sense and give more context around this conversation.

We are grateful each week that you all listen in and join with us, so here's this week's episode.

Jesus, in his sermon on the mount, makes it very clear that we will store up treasure somewhere. The act of storing treasure isn’t condemned, but we should pay close attention to the location in which the treasure is stored. Jesus makes a concise statement of “where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” So the question is, as Christians, where are we storing up our treasure? On earth? or in Heaven? It’s gotta be one or the other.

In a world where sex outside of marriage was expected for all men, the early Christian ethic of sex only between a husband and a wife was counter-cultural. The early disciples also saw sexuality as an equal gift and responsibility to both husbands and wives. The needs of women were never taken into consideration like this before. Early disciples saw sex, not just as a physical activity, but a spiritual one as well.

Everyone is willing to do for those who can do for them. But what set Christians apart from the very beginning, was their care for those who could not care for themselves. Just a heads up, this is a longer episode, because this is a conversation with a lot of nuance to it, and so we just ask that you hang in there with us and hopefully find some good pieces for you to have conversations with your neighbors and friends.

All of us wonder at times if our prayers do any good. James is convinced that the heart of God can be moved by the prayers of faithful people. Sick people can actually be made well, sinners can be forgiven, and prayer with confession can result in healing. The same God who answered Elijah’s prayer is eager to answer ours.

Life is hard, especially if you are trying to live for Jesus. Paul made it clear to the people he pastored, “We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God.” James calls us to be patient, because the coming of the Lord is near. However, it's not just about being patient, it's about perseverance, because there is no salvation without perseverance.

James has some very severe words of warning for wealthy people (like us). He is especially harsh with those who have wealth they have hoarded. The questions for us are: How do you know you have enough? When does wise saving become excessive? What should we do to make sure the warnings of James don’t come to pass for us?

On your tombstone there is a birth date and a death date and the rest of your life is a dash in-between. James teaches us that dash goes fast…our life is but a midst. Our time here is short. Which means we don’t have time to waste. Which is why wasting any opportunity to do good is a sin. We are presuming on God to assume we will have another chance to do the good tomorrow that we have the opportunity to do today.

Jesus made a promise to his friends that just as the world hated him, the world would hate them too. Yet, for many who claim Christ, they have instead chosen friendship with the world, without knowing that means enmity with God. There are two powers at work around us, the power of God and the power of the Devil. And inevitably we will submit to one, and resist the other.

We have all said things that we instantly regret. Things we wish we could unsay. Our words have deceived people, hurt people, insulted people, and angered people. While we often blame it on the tongue, the tongue only expresses what is in our heart. We have a heart problem, and while no man can tame the tongue, we worship a God who can transform our hearts.

It doesn’t matter what you believe if that belief doesn’t impact what you do. Biblical faith is not simply attesting to a set of doctrinal truths, it is living your life in the light of the doctrinal truths. True faith is always displayed through actions. And if you have no actions, then your faith is as good as dead.

We live in a world where prejudice is rampant. From the way one speaks, to the color of one's hair, the neighborhood they live in, the shape of one's body, and to the color of one's skin. However, it should not be that way among the people of God. We have been given a very specific command from God, “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Your big neighbor, your black neighbor, your rich neighbor, your ugly neighbor, your Republican neighbor, your homeless neighbor, and even your pastor neighbor. In the end, we are not going to be judge, we are going to be judged. The way we judge now will impact how we are judged then.

Most Christians thoroughly enjoy hearing good teaching. We are often wowed by truths that good teachers and preachers bring out of the text. The problem is, far too many of us don’t do anything with what we learn. In the words of James, we “deceive ourselves” by thinking that simply hearing the word does us any good. This week we are going to talk about actually doing what the Scriptures say.

How can we consider it "pure joy" when we face trials? It's not that the trials are joyful, but rather it's what the trials produce that we should take joy in. Trials test our faith and produce perseverance. Therefore we should be joyful in the perseverance that is produced through trials, which strengthens our faith.

Zechariah was a priest, and the father of John the Baptist. He and his wife were very old and unable to have children. Then one day the angel Gabriel visits Zechariah to tell him that God has chosen his family to fulfill the final promise of the Old testament, that they would give birth the the "prophet of the power of Elijah" who would declare and pave the way for the Messiah. Because of his doubts, Zechariah was made mute (and possibly deaf as well) until the birth of his son. When Zechariah names him John, his tongue is released, and the response is praise and thanksgiving in the form of Zechariah's Song.

We don't know a lot about Mary, but we do know from the book of Luke that she was highly favored by God. But why was she so "highly favored?" Why did God choose her as the one to birth and raise the Messiah? What made Mary so special? The answers are found in "The Magnificat" also known as "Mary's Song of Praise" in Luke 1:46-55.

Jason, Josh, and I sit down, and we discuss the common misconception that the people that have the most are the most generous what it means to Chase after the goal of sacrificial giving, and how debt plays into your ability to get there.

Generosity in the church is a shared sacrifice.  While not all people can or should give the same amount, we should all give with the same sacrifice.  We are called to give according to our means.  And our giving will be accepted, according to what we have…in other words…God doesn’t just look at what is given he also looks at what is left.  Question:  Has your giving grown with your means?

Generosity isn’t something we have to do; it is something we get to do. Our generosity is an outward reflection of our devotion to God. It reveals the sincerity of our love for God and others. And our sacrificial giving is a reflection of the sacrificial love of Jesus, who went from rich to poor for us!

When it comes to surrendering ourselves to Jesus…often the last part of our lives that we surrender is our money. Jesus expects that as Lord of our lives, he is Lord of all. Yet, for many, we live as practical atheists. Where we say we believe in a Gracious God who will supply all our needs, but we live as if God doesn’t exist. As if the only way to have all our needs met is to disobey what the God we believe in commands us to do.

And for those who have grown in their discipleship and do give…they believe that giving at all is giving enough. Whether it is an amount or a percentage, there is a line to reach, and once it is crossed…we can check the box forever.

But Paul has to teach us that just as we are called to grow in our faith, and grow in our speech and grow in our knowledge, and grow in our earnestness, and grow in our love…we are to keep growing in our generosity.

“Gave themselves first to God then by the will of God to us.”

Even after Jesus had a full day of ministry, the first thing he would do is retreat to a place by himself to commune with the Father. Why did He do this? What benefit would it be for us to do the same? Silence, solitude, praying, and listening to God were intensional essential times for Jesus and His ministry. Therefore we should consider what that should look like for us in our modern time where constant noise competes for our attention.

Special guest Jay Greer from Mustard Seed Network (a church planting ministry in Japan) brings us a message about the importance of spending intentional time praying in humble reverence to our Creator. It's a spiritual discipline that we often feel we are great at, but when we take a closer look at what the Bible says about prayer in our lives, it might be a blind spot we neglect.

We live in a culture that values productivity, so many of us are constantly on the move. From our 9-5 to our side hustle, sports tournaments, and hobbies, we have become accustomed to this relentless pursuit of "Busy." But what if there was a practice from the Way of Jesus that directly contradicted the anxious and marginless lives most of us live? As we dive into the spiritual practice of the Sabbath, we see that scripture teaches us that Sabbath is more than just a day off... It is the biblical rhythm that God wrote into the DNA of humanity from the very beginning of time.

Being fully transparent with people is one of the hardest things to do. However, we see in James chapter 5 the importance of being a part of a community that has confession. When we live out this spiritual discipline of community with confession we find healing and freedom. Community with confession can produce change and help us become better disciples of Jesus.

Memorizing scripture is not only biblical; it's awesome, and everyone should do (it including you). Be more awesome.

If you’ve been around church for much time at all, you probably recognize that as Christians, we should be reading our Bibles. But the unfortunate truth is that most Christians aren’t spending time in the Word of God nearly as much as they should be, which may be caused by not understanding how valuable scripture truly is. When we are healthy in our spiritual discipline of Bible intake, we will better know our Lord and become better disciples of Jesus.

Paul ends the book of Romans with a few parting instructions. He speaks of unity among the believers, being steadfast in obedience and he sends along a few words of greetings from those who are with him. And he ends his letter where he begins, restating his goal: that all gentiles might come to the obedience that comes from faith.

No one does ministry alone. In every successful ministry endeavor there are always people behind the scenes that make sure the mission is accomplished. It was true for Paul and it is true for us. In this section of the letter, Paul sends greetings to some of the most important men and women who have played a pivotal part in his ministry.

As we near the end of this letter. Paul shares with the church his future travel plans. Through this text we get a reminder that these are real people who lived in a real place in real time. We begin to see how this letter fits inside the timeline and life of Pauls other ministries and letters. We also get a picture of what role the local church plays in the advancement of the Gospel.

How do we respond to those who are spiritually less mature than we are? Just like Jesus did for us. We bear with their failings as Christ does with ours. We endeavor to build them up, as Christ does us. We accept them just as Christ accepted us.

"It is for freedom that Christ sets you free” Gal. 5:1. We are no longer bound to the law. Does that mean we can do anything we want…short of sin? Not exactly. Being a part of the family of God, being a part of the body of Christ, means that we don't have the freedom to do things that hurt other people's faith, even if we are free in Christ to do it. Part of dying to ourselves…and putting others first…is giving up our rights for the sake of others and putting their needs first.

Not everything is black and white when it comes to living out our faith. Paul makes it clear there are disputable matters. So how do you know what you can do and can’t? What should you do and shouldn’t? The answer is you do what honors your master. And what honors the master for one servant may not honor the master for another.

We have never been closer to the coming of Jesus than we are right now.  How would you live if you knew he was coming soon?  How would you treat people?  How important would obeying Jesus be?  Is there anything you are doing that you would stop?  Anything you aren’t doing that you would start?  Our salvation is nearer now than it has ever been.  It’s time to live like it.

Should we submit to God or Government?  And the answer is yes.  In a country that is divided most deeply by political ideology, the idea of submitting to government is an inflammatory one.  Paul invites us to see the government not as an enemy of God but as a weapon of God. And to live in rebellion against the governing authorities is almost always to live in rebellion against God.

What does loving people look like?  In this section, Paul rattles off many practical implications of loving people. From honoring others to showing hospitality to feeding your enemies.  In a world where everyone is looking out for themselves, one of the greatest acts of gospel proclamation is loving others more than ourselves.

What do we do now that we have come to faith in Christ?  Starting in Romans 12, Paul begins to give us application for the gospel in our lives.  It starts with worship…not simply singing…but offering our whole body to him and joining in our body to his body…the church.

All Israel will be saved?  Romans 11:25-36

Can God be trusted to keep his promises?  What about his promises to his people, the Israelites?  As we exit Romans 11, Paul finally answers these questions.  And his answer is summered up in two words, disobedience, and mercy.

When it comes to the family of God, there is only one family tree. And in this family tree, Some branches that once were a part, have been cut off. Other branches were not original, but have been grafted in. And Paul has some good news and bad news, those who have been cut off, can be grafted in again. And the bad news: those who have been grafted in can be cut off again.

As a God follower, there will likely be times when you feel all alone, when it seems you are the only one still trying to be faithful. The reality, however, is that there has always been and always will be a remnant chosen by grace. We can rest assured that as followers of Jesus, we are never alone.

View Details

No one comes to faith in Jesus without hearing the gospel of Jesus. No one can believe the good news that they haven’t heard. And we have been tasked with making sure those around us hear it. But we can’t make people respond in faith. As Paul teaches in this text, there will be some who hear it and reject it. But our job is still the same: Preach the word!

Who gets an invitation into the kingdom of God? ANYone and EVERYone! The gospel isn’t just good news for the few, it is an invitation for all to call on the name of the Lord. The question this text has for us is have you responded to the good news of Jesus?

Some teach that it doesn’t matter what you believe or what faith you practice as long as you are sincere. But Paul teaches otherwise. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life, and no one comes to the Father except through me. There is no way of salvation outside of Jesus, no matter how zealous of God you are.

Are people chosen for salvation or destruction? If so, is it fair for God to hold people accountable for a choice they couldn’t make? This is one of the most difficult questions Romans 9 makes us ask.

How much do you care for those who are outside of Christ? In this text we see Paul willing to give up his own salvation for those he loves who are outside of Jesus. And we are reminded, again, that it takes more than having Abrahams's DNA to be his child; you must have his faith.

Who can be against the people of God? Lots of people. We do have an enemy who is against

us every day. And we are at war with sin and flesh every day. The question really isn’t who can

be against us…the question is, who can defeat the people of God? And the answer to that is no

one or nothing! We are more than conquerors through Jesus!

Suffering in this life is inevitable. Does that mean God is powerless, absent, or angry? Not at

all. God is sovereign, and no matter what suffering we endure or why we endure it, God is

great enough to use it for good. Although this isn’t a promise for everyone. It is a promise made for those who love him.

View Details

Everyone wants to live forever like Jesus, but not everyone wants to suffer like Jesus. But what will you do when you learn that you can’t have one without the other? Suffering isn’t optional for anyone, not even the children of God. But, for the children of God, it is temporary. And no matter how bad the suffering gets, it does not compare to the glory to come.

Does the Spirit of God live in you? If you are a child of God, he does! The Spirit of God is what

makes you a child of God! But there is a war within each of God's children. A war

between the desires of the flesh and the desires of the Spirit. The flesh urges us to obey it,

and the Spirit invites us to obey him. And which of those you are fighting for will determine

whether you live or die.

If the Law was good, why does it make people bad? The answer is it doesn’t! The Law doesn’t

make people bad; it simply reveals that people are bad. The Law shows us what we should be

and helps us realize we aren’t. And the issue isn’t that we don’t want to be good, but that we

can’t! We can’t live up to the standard of the Law…we need a savior.

View Details

At one time, we were all married to the law. Meaning we were obligated to serve it. And

marriage is a sacrament that binds two people together as long as they both are alive. But

thanks be to God, through Christ’s death, we died. And are now free to marry another and

serve him.

You are a slave to whatever you obey.  Everyone is a slave to something.  In this text, Paul gives us the option, to become a slave to sin or a slave to righteousness.  There isn’t an option to not be a slave…you will be a slave to something. You can be a slave to that which pays off in death or that which brings the gift of eternal life.

Baptism is not a symbol, it is a sacrament. Meaning, it has spiritual ramifications in the heavenly realm. When we were Baptized, Paul says we were baptized into his death, burial and resurrection. And because we died with Christ, we also rose victorious with him. And just as sin has no mastery over Jesus, it no longer has mastery over us. Just as Jesus is free to live fully to God, we too are now free to live fully to God.

In this text, Paul unpacks how we got to where we are.  All were once in Adam, and thus all sinned when he sinned.  Sin isn’t just something we do, it is part of who we are.  But just as we were once in Adam and his sin infected us all, we have been invited to be born again in Christ and thus be infected with his righteousness.  In Adam we all experienced death, in Christ we experience eternal life.

Because of the love of God Jesus died for the unworthy not the worthy. God did not wait for us to get it together, he died for us while we were still his enemies. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus we are transformed from enemies of God into children of God. And through his death, Jesus reconciled our relationship with God.

View Details

Through faith in Jesus, we get to experience peace with God instead of the wrath of God. Through the hope of Jesus, we glory in our sufferings not just in our victories. And because of God’s love for us, he has gifted us his spirit.

Paul continues to use Abraham as an example of what it means to live by faith.  Many of us grew up singing the song “Father Abraham” without knowing what it really meant.  In this text Paul lets us know.  Abraham is the father of all who have faith in Christ.  The righteousness that was credited to Abraham can also be credited to us, by faith in God who raised Jesus from the dead.

View Details

There are 3 world religions that trace their beginnings back to Abraham.  Two of them use his life a picture of what it means to follow the Law of God.  And one, Christianity as described by Paul, uses Abraham as an example of what it means to live by faith.  Righteousness was not a wage that Abraham earned, it was a credit he received by faith.  It wasn’t something he received because he followed the law, but before.

View Details

We are all powerless to be righteous on our own. We can’t obey our way into the kingdom. That can leave us all a bit hopeless. Which is what makes the Gospel Good news. There is now a righteousness available that doesn’t come through the law…but comes by faith to ALL who believe. Those who had Fatih before Christ…and those of us who have faith after christ can ALL be made righteous through the blood of Jesus. And because it isn’t something we have done, but what he has done, we don’t take the credit, instead we give him our lives.

View Details

Paul has argued that all will be judged based on what they do. If you keep the law, you are righteous. (2:13) if you do not, you are condemned as a law breaker. (2:25-27). So our best hope is being better at law keeping, right? Wrong. There is no one righteous…not even you. The law wasn’t given to make people righteous. It was given to prove they aren’t righteous.

There are advantages to being in the company of the believers, even if you aren’t a believer. Living the word, even without believing the word, will bless your life. We all benefit from living in a nation that was founded on the word of God. Even those who don’t believe it. Paul also declares that God’s faithfulness is not predicated upon our faithfulness. He will be faithful to his promises, both good and bad, no matter what.

View Details

We often judge others by their actions, while judging ourselves by our intentions.  Paul declares that everyone will be judged, not by what they have heard, or even what they have believed.  We will all be judged by what we do.  Not that our actions save us…but our actions testify to whether we are saved.  We will all be held to account for what we do with what we know. (Note the pronoun “you” he is talking to Jews).

In this text we read one of the scariest lines in the Bible for a third time: “God gave them over.” As Paul outlines the wrath of God on the gentiles, he gives them over to the depraved mind they so long for. And as a result, Paul shares 21 sins that are a result. When these actions and attitudes seem normal and natural to su, we can assume we have a depraved mind too.

What do you do when you don’t want to obey God? You create your own. In this text Paul describes people who choose to create their own Gods, so that they can live their lives however they want. And in doing so they exchange the immortal Glory, for Mortal glory and the truth for a lie. And the result of idol creation is always sexual immorality.

View Details

Before God reveals his wrath, he reveals himself. The creation we live in reveals the creator behind it. God has not left people in the dark. If they don’t know him or see him, is because they choose not to know him or see him.

In this text, we learn Paul has yet to visit this church, but he longs to. Even though he did not plant this church he has a passion for them. He is praying for them constantly. He wants to strengthen their faith. He wants to see a harvest among them. He is obligated and eager to preach the Gospel because he is not ashamed. Which begs the question, how many of us feel compelled to share the gospel with those around us?

View Details

Paul begins this letter by stating his mission and his calling. The purpose of his life is to share the Gospel as an Apostle of Jesus to the gentiles…and call them all to the obedience that comes from faith. Obedience doesn’t bring Fatih. Faith produces obedience.

This week we will kick off the series by seeking to answer some of the context questions of the letter. Who wrote it, who was it written to, and when was it written? How did the church in Rome begin? We want to make sure that as we study this text we first understand the context. We will talk about Paul's calling to the gentiles and his connection to the church in Rome.

One of the most popular stories inside and outside the church. In this message, we discover a picture of the gospel of Jesus…and our place in it. Contrary to what most of us have been taught…we aren’t David in the story…Jesus is. We aren’t the hero…Jesus is. We are the cowardly Israelites in need of a savior to fight an enemy we can’t defeat. Sin and death.

This story is a story of integrity and faithfulness in the face of overwhelming adversity. In this story The evil king thinks he is the one who determines outcomes…that he is in control. But Rack Shack and Benny know better. The greatest truth of this story is summed up in one line…from verse 17 ”but even if he does not…” God is the one who controls outcomes. We are to be faithful…and trust God for the rest.

One of the greatest part of this fantastic story is found in Chapters 5:13-15. The truth God is not for us…we are for him. We spend so much of our prayers trying to get God to be for us …be he is not joining us we are to join him.

This story is used to decorate children’s rooms and nurseries the world over…but this is far from a children’s story. It is the point in the story of God where he regrets ever creating man. Pours out his wrath in the form of water and destroys nearly everything and starts over. This story is a reminder of a couple of truths: 1. God cares deeply about this world…its state grieved him. 2. He is a God of restoration…not simply destruction.
