Today we speak with Independent member for the Federal seat of Indi, Dr Helen Haines. Haines is busy giving politicians a good name by working to legislate for what she calls AFIC, the Australian Federal Integrity Commission, a body designed to hold federal politicians and employees to the sorts of standards we the people expect. However, just as she was about to launch a parliamentary debate on her legislation, the Federal Attorney General, after months of prevarication, called a press conference and released the government's own, much weaker version of an Integrity Commission. We speak with Dr Haines and get the lowdown on how her legislation compares with the government's, what she hopes to achieve in introducing it, and how she will respond to the government's ambush (that's our word, not hers). We also spoke to her about the role of independents more generally, and we think you will find her comments completely fascinating. Finally, we talk, briefly about US politics. The show was recorded before the results of the US election were declared, back when The Donald (remember that nickname?) was still in with a bit of a chance, even though we all felt that the end was nigh. We took the opportunity to consider just how President Trump might react once his Presidency was declared over. Will he just disappear as the power of the office drains away, or does he have something else up his sleeve?Welcome to the #transitzone!
