In this fourth message from the ROOTED series, we continue our journey by asking: What are our roots growing into?
This week we turn to grace — one of the central truths of the Christian gospel, but something we can find surprisingly difficult to actually receive and live from.
Paul’s words in Ephesians 2 remind us where we were, what God has done, and who we are now. We were separated from God and unable to save ourselves. But God acted. Out of His great love and mercy, He made us alive with Christ and saved us by grace.
Grace isn't something we earn. It isn't a wage, a reward or payment for getting everything right. It is a gift. And the Christian life isn't about constantly trying to prove that we're worthy of that gift. It is about learning to live from what God has already done for us in Jesus.
Being rooted in grace means allowing God's love, mercy and forgiveness to become the foundation of our identity rather than our performance. We don't obey so that God will accept us — we obey because, in Christ, we have already been accepted. We don't serve to prove ourselves — we serve because we have already been served by Jesus.
And just as a tree doesn't produce fruit in order to become a tree, our good works don't earn our salvation. They are the fruit that grows when our lives are rooted in God's grace.
So where are your roots? Are they in your performance, your achievements and how well you think you're doing? Or are they going deeper into the grace, mercy and love of God?
Because the gospel doesn't say, “Look what I've done for God.” It says, “Look what God has done for me.”
