Optical communications—the backbone of the internet—use modulated lasers to transmit over a hundred different colored channels (using wavelength-division multiplexing) each with a hundred gigabits per second of speed. Multi-bit encoding modes—instead of just 1s and 0s—have been proven in the lab to increase throughput even further, but all suffer from errors introduced by noise in the channels, especially over free-space channels such as to satellites, submarines or even through living cells, according to researchers at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa). Now Wits’ researchers have demonstrated a mode-division multiplexing (MDM) scheme using a quantitative measure for a vector (polarized) beam’s purity, its vector-quality factor (technically, its polarization separability) as the information carrier that can encode not just 1s and 0s, but countless modes of vector light that are virtually unaffected by channel noise.
Deep neural networks (DNNs) using reinforcement learning are getting harder to come by, due to sensitivity to the initial hyper-parameters chosen (such as the width and depth of the DNN, as well as other application-specific initial conditions). However, these limitations have recently been overcome by combining RL with evolutionary computation (EC), which maintains a population of learning agents, each with unique initial conditions, that together "evolve" an optimal solution. The U.S. Electronic Communications Privacy Act (ECPA) grants government agencies permission to surveil citizens who assume privacy in their electronic communications. Today such oversight, even by the U.S. Congress, is opaque (summarized and anonymized), and any notification of those being monitored nearly always takes place after the fact.
New Mexico State University (NMSU) researchers presented a paper at the ACM Conference on Computers, Communications and Security (CCS 2019, London) in which they claimed to be able to automate proactive oversight that prevents privacy violations before they occur, using algorithms and blockchain in the form of what they call the Enforcer software.

At the International Conference on Cyber-Physical Systems (ICCPS 19) last month in Montreal, Canada, researchers turned the tables on drive-by-wire automobile hackers. The world's largest maker of quantum computers, Canada's D-Wave Systems Inc., recently announced the Pegasus generation of its quantum computers, featuring 2.5 times the qubits (more than 5,000) than its predecessor, as well as the elimination of a major stumbling block to commercialization by directly connecting each of those qubits to three times as many nearby qubits as its previous generation, the Chimera.
Most micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) inside your smartphone, smartwatch, or other wearable electronic device require a pair of silicon dice—one die for the MEMS moving parts, and one die for its complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) supporting electronics—requiring at least four cubic millimeters.
U.K.-based nanodevice startup Nanusens has developed a MEMS-inside-CMOS process, which yields a device that fits on a single cubic-millimeter chip-scale package (the same size as a chip's die).
