Every year on the Tuesday before Lent, my mom makes the donuts—it isn’t called “Fat Tuesdee” for nothing.

It’s a tradition that her mother started many years ago and she continues since her passing.

The old fashion donuts are just that—a simple old fashion cake donut, nothing fancy.

Add the basic homemade icing and jimmies and it is the best treat of the year.

My grandmother’s donuts were deep-fired and sugar-coated; today my mom simplifies and uses a portable donut maker.

The method may be different, and the recipe may be different, but they are still made with the same TLC.

Recipe for Old Fashioned DonutsIngredients

• 4-1/2 cups flour
• 1-3/4 cups sugar
• 7 teaspoons baking powder
• 2 teaspoons salt
• 1 teaspoon nutmeg
• 3 eggs
• 2 teaspoons vanilla
• 2 cups milk
• 1 cup oil

Instructions

1. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and nutmeg.
2. At medium speed, beat eggs and vanilla.
3. Add milk, oil, and dry ingredients alternately to the egg-sugar mixture.
4. Beat well after each addition.
5. Add batter to each donut mold in a pre-heated oiled donut maker. Bake until browned.
6. Makes 20-22
