Is there a more hated face for Eagles fans in the NFL right now than Jonathan Gannon? First, his defense crapped out in the Super Bowl, failing to get any stops in the second half. Then to make it worse, it came out around draft time he was talking to the Cardinals about taking their head coach job while he was supposed to be preparing for the Super Bowl. A guy Eagles fans already hated for his soft defensive scheme, became public enemy number one.

But now he is piling on. Jonathan Gannon recently sat down with Zak Keefer of The Athletic for an interview. In that interview, they got into the debacle that was his Super Bowl defense. He continued to avoid taking any blame for it.

““I’m the reason we lost the Super Bowl,” he says, mimicking the criticism.”

I mean, is he the only reason they lost? No. But he is probably suspect number 1 for it. You can’t blame the offense, they put up the most points by a Super Bowl loser ever. The defense getting no stops, and some bad special teams play, is why they lost. If it was a few scattered bad performances by the defense, you could put the blame on the players, and not the coach. But it was the whole defense. That tells you it was bad coaching. They could not get a good pass rush because of the bad field, and Gannon couldn’t adjust. It was an issue we saw all season, Gannon struggling to adjust to things on the fly.

Gannon threw his own players under the bus a bit too. Suggesting the Kadarius Toney TD was something where the play should have been covered. He was at least humble enough to say the Skyy Moore TD later in the game was on the play call. How kind of him to take the blame for one single play.

…Another baffling part of the interview was Jonathan Gannon saying that he was surprised by how good of a head coach Nick Sirianni became. On the surface, that seems like a nice thing to say. But it is also a backhanded compliment. It is Gannon saying he did not have much faith in Sirianni before, which makes it odd that he took a job as his defensive coordinator.

That may just be another example of Gannon being a weirdo who does not understand how to interact with people, see his “hype speech” for further proof of that. He may not realize that what he said could be considered an insult too. But either way, it is a strange thing to say.

Everything this guy says or does just makes him easier to dislike. We haven’t even mentioned him taking a random potshot at the Philly media. He was unlikable when he was DC here, despite his defense’s success on the field. He became insufferable when his defense cost the team the Super Bowl. And since he became the Head Coach of the Cardinals, he has become the type of guy many Eagles fans will actively root against. These most recent comments have only made Eagles fans hate him more.

But will this roster do as well as they did last year? There has been some trepidation from fans and hosts alike in the last few weeks. Maybe that is just our natural inclination to be worried. Enough has gone wrong in Philly sports, especially the last couple of years, that it is understandable to be slow to be optimistic. And there are some question marks on the team entering this year. How will they replace losing all of their starting Safeties and Linebackers? Can the RB room reproduce what Miles Sanders gave them last year? And does the team suddenly have depth issues on the Offensive Line?

This still is a very good roster though. They bring back most of the same players on offense and have some new exciting faces on defense. But are they good enough to do what last year’s team did? Or are those concerns people keep bringing up enough to hurt them? Let’s look at each position group, and see how this new Eagles roster stacks up to the one that made the Super Bowl last season.
