Subcontracted workers in the UK can beabruptlyfired for the littlest of "infractions", such as eating a catered sandwich that wasn't used inthe meeting it was purchased for and was waiting to be scavenged.

I would guess it is similar in the US, but I don't actually know. The protection ofworkers'rights in the USis very flimsy after decades of lobbying by employers.
