Daniel Kowalski. Swimming’s Mr Nice Guy.

When I was growing up, I mostly only admired athletes for their medals. Athletes who won specifically, or broke world records.

But Dan was different, even though he was an amazingly successful athlete winning medals in 3 individual events at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - something I could only dream of! More importantly, Dan was kind. He was respectful of his competitors and respected by his peers. That has ALWAYS stuck with me and I believe helped shape who I wanted to be outside of the pool. Because you could be a great competitor and a nice person!
