We have spoken in the past of the great sensitivities th at Gedolim have for the feelings of others. There is a famous story about the Steipler that illustrates this point. It was the high holiday season in the Kollel Chazon Ish, where great Sadikim such as Rav Shteinman, Rav Michel Yehuda Leftkowitz and others prayed on the high holidays. Next to the front row was a small bench w here some of the children of the great rabbis would pray. A man, Rabbi Halpern,had printed very large Machzorim in his printing press, which had gone bankrupt, and he decided to donate the leftover Machzorim to various shuls. These Machzors were the size of a Gemara (which is probably why they went out of print). One 11-year-old boy decided to use this very large Machzor. The Steipler sat directly across from this boy, and noticed that for the entire prayers, the boy was shaking back and forth with what seemed to be a Gemara. Th e Steipler thought it was strange that the young boy hadn’t separat ed himself from the Gemara entire time. Even though he was only 11, he was supposed to be praying on Rosh Hashanah. Then , when the boy lef t, the Steipler got up, picked up the Machzor, (which he thought was a Gemara) and put it with the rest of the Gemarot on the bookshelf. When the boy came back and didn’t see his large Machzor, he found a regular Machzor and continued to pray. Two years later, the father of this boy invited the St e ipler to his son ’ s bar mitzvah . The St e ipler then asked the boy ’s father to please do him a favor ; once the boy becomes a Bar Mitzvah, ask him for Mechila in the Steipler’s name, for paining him two years earlier on Rosh Hashana. The Steipler also sent a present for the boy. Two weeks later, the St ei pler met up with the boy’s father and asked him if he had asked his son for forgiveness. The father confessed that he had forgotten, and the Steipler asked him to please go now and ask his son f or Mechila. He did, and went back to inform the Steipler, who thanked him. These are the details of this wonderful, small story, which is actually not so small. A great man made a mistake, realized his mistake, did not forget that he needed to ask forgiveness, but did not ask forgiveness of the boy at age 11 because he was too young to forgive. He waited for him to become old enough to forgive him for what he had done. Wonder of wonders, the sensitivity of great people. Have a wonderful day.
