We continue with the words of the Bet HaLevi. He tells us that we can see how our Galut/exile is much longer than the first exile, because the sin of hatred destroyed more than the horrible sins of the first Bet HaMikdash. Everything that we have today is all from the sins of that original hatred. Therefore, he says, there is a guarantee from God that before the final redemption, there has to be peace in the world. He quotes a pasuk in Malachi, (who was the last prophet) in chapter 3, where God says, “ Behold I will send to you Eliyahu HaNavi before the great awesome day comes . He will cause the hearts of the fathers to go upon the sons, and the hearts of the sons to go upon the fathers etc. ” The Bet HaLevi quotes this pasuk as a source that there will be peace in the world. Now, this pasuk doesn’t say anything about peace, but the Bet HaLevi is basing himself on a Rashi that says, simply, that it means that fathers and sons will get along with each other and coax each other along in the ways of serving Hashem. Then, Rashi explains that Eliyahu HaNavi‘s job is to bring peace into the world. That is why Eliyahu HaNavi must come before Mashiach. We need peace. Rashi’s source for this is a Mishna in Masechet Eduyot, chapter 8, where the Gemara discusses the reason for Eliyahu HaNavi’s coming before Mashiach. The Mishna says, “ Not to distance families, not to bring families close. Rather, to bring peace in the world.” Although the pasuk doesn’t mention shalom , the Mishna understands that Eliyahu HaNavi’s job is to bring peace. Why? Because if the whole original sin was a sin of hatred, we cannot have Mashiach come until we fix that sin. Eliyahu HaNavi is a man of peace, and that’s why we need him to come before Mashiach comes. The sefer Havot Yair, in chapter 192, makes an interesting point. He says that we are all familiar that Eliyahu HaNavi will come to answer all the questions that we have. Tiku , in the Gemara, stands for Tishbi,Yitaretz Kushot V’Abayot Eliyahu HaTishbi will answer all our questions. He explains that one of the reasons that we do not have peace is because there are arguments in Halacha . So Eliyahu Hanavi will come and bring peace between the different opinions. Everybody will agree on the Halacha and there will be peace. There will be no more arguments. Eliyahu HaNavi will say who is right and that will bring peace into the world.
