Achan hid his sin before God and Israel. God says that this is the reason Israel could not stand against Ai. Israel experiences the power-sucking effect of sin. When we live in hidden sin, we experience the same spirit-sucking infirmity in our Christian lives. In our passage, we see God exposing Israel’s sin. At first it seems like disaster, but we see his purposes in it. God is drawing them to restoration. At the end of the passage, we see the strangest covenant renewal in the Pentateuch. The people say nothing. They just stand silent. In this passage we will see the surprising plan of God at that renewal that left everyone speechless. It was a shocking message of grace. In our sermon today God will show us the danger of hidden sin, the danger of covetousness and the overwhelming mercy of God.
