This episode shares an interview with Soraya and Catriona from the Grassroots Remedies Co-operative based in Scotland. They share all about their work from sliding scale clinics to ‘closing the gap’ and working with local plants. We talk about relationship building, community organising and co-operative working while navigating the complexities of class and public perceptions of herbalism.
Their central philosophy is that herbal medicine is the medicine of the people and should be accessible to everyone - we talk about what this means in practice for them, and so much more.
About the Guests
Soraya Bishop (she/her) has a background in ecology, conservation and community gardening and organising. Along with other GRR co-op members she believes that social and environmental justice and community herbalism are deeply intertwined. Soraya runs workshops and courses in sustainable foraging practice, sensory herbalism and practical remedy making and helps manage one of GRR co-ops larger medicine gardens - a small corner of the 100 acre Lauriston Agroecology Farm in North West Edinburgh. Soraya also has a love for birds, beats, hills and cooking.
Catriona Gibson (she/her) is a Medical Herbalist (BSc MNIMH) and foraging tutor (AoF), offering consultations, seasonal walks and workshops across Glasgow. Catriona is interested in herbal medicine as it brings together her experiences working with people with chronic health problems and her interest in nature connection. She sees working with people to make their own medicines, with locally available plants as a means of enhancing environmental sustainability.
About the Grass Roots Remedies Co-operative
Grass Roots Remedies is a workers’ cooperative based in Scotland. Our central philosophy is that herbal medicine is the medicine of the people and should therefore be accessible to everyone. We align our ethics with the three Permaculture ethics of Earth Care, People Care, Fair Shares, and endeavour to continually reflect upon all areas of our work as we practice herbalism in the 21st Century.
GRR is currently made up of four co-op members - Ally Hurcikova, Soraya Bishop, Rhona Donaldson & Catriona Gibson, and three others involved in running the Wester Hailes Community Herbal Clinic, facilitating workshops and delivering projects. Our shared interests and experience include: clinical and community herbalism, social and environmental activism, non-hierarchical organising, community and therapeutic gardening, horticulture, permaculture, ecology and bodywork.
Our work spans four main areas: herbal education; low cost community clinics; community herb gardening & providing online DIY resources.

This episode shares an interview with Bonnie from Raven Sun Apothecary. We talk about herbalism, anarchism, herbal mutual aid, reciprocity with the land and so much more.
About Bonnie: Bonnie (they/them), founder of @RavenSun_TraditionalTrading grew up on Cucapá lands, their early life was defined by a deep connection to family, food, and nature. This bond was shattered when they lost their mother to deportation and their father to suicide, forcing them into a restrictive foster care system defined by total separation. Though they survived the system and excelled in college, discovering a passion for culture, art, and medicinal plants, unresolved trauma eventually led to severe addiction. At 26, the plants called them back, grounding their seven-year recovery and inspiring them to launch Raven Sun Traditional Trading. For the last eight years, they have used their lived experience and endless study to share herbal medicine with unsheltered relatives and anyone who wouldn't otherwise be able to access these offerings, turning grief and rage into community healing.

This episode shares a recording of a talk by Nicole Rose (she/her) at the Together We Resist Feminist Congress in Basel, Switzerland.
About the talk: This workshop is for anyone experiencing repression due to their work for liberation, as well as those involved in anti-repression and solidarity efforts. It explores how state and systematic repression impact the nervous system, body, and overall health, and how herbal medicine can offer support in both the short and long term. From calming acute anxiety to rebuilding after burnout, trauma, or imprisonment, herbs have a vital role to play in sustaining resistance. The session shares practical examples of herbal solidarity from supporting people post-arrest and in court, to navigating incarceration and healing after release. Grounded in lived experience and collective care, this workshop aims to nourish movements as much as bodies.

This is an audio recording of the Overcoming Burnout book – with accompanying journal questions! Sign up to access a link to the show: https://solidarityapothecary.org/product/overcoming-burnout-podcast/
About the book:
Organising with others for human, animal and earth liberation can be one of the most empowering experiences alive. Yet frontline resistance comes with risks to our physical and emotional health that can lead many people to burn out and abandon social movements altogether.
This book is about overcoming burnout, linking the author’s journey of recovery with wider systemic forces such as classism, sexism and power dynamics in groups, poverty, chronic illness and ableism, as well as grief and trauma from prison and state repression. It is a call for models of mutual aid and collective care. Simultaneously deeply personal and acutely political, for anyone involved in grassroots organising, it is a must read.

Tina (she/her) is a single mum whose son has been in prison the last 18 months. Since he’s been inside his self-harm has worsened to the point of repeated suicide attempts. Tina is nervously exhausted from phone calls and prison visits. Her arthritis has flared up so badly that she is now using a walking stick on very bad days. She has body pain all over and isn’t refreshed by sleep. She feels tense and unable to relax on a daily basis because she is so worried about her son. She takes Ibuprofen and Paracetamol regularly but no other medication. She is in early menopause and sleep is affected by night sweats. She has lost her appetite.

In this episode, Nicole (she/her) talks all about the new Herbalism and State Violence book! She shares about the different sections and content of the book, where to buy it and more.
The book blurb: State violence is a brutal reality for vast numbers of people. It is an experience that is racialised, classed and gendered in its design and application. It intersects with nearly all forms of oppression. Plant medicines can be a tool for solidarity and resistance; they can practically support us to survive and they can help us recover from trauma.
From herbal care for handcuff injuries to healing from incarceration, this book looks at examples from around the world of herbal solidarity in practice. Writing from her lived experience of incarceration, political organising and of running the Solidarity Apothecary, Nicole Rose explores some of the many connections between herbalism and struggles for liberation. Through recipes, remedies and stories from the herbal frontlines, she invites us to connect with our allies in struggle – the plants – to rest, to heal and to continue the fight.

This is part four of a workshop that explores herbalism, incarceration and abolition. This particular section introduces abolition (very briefly!) as well as the roles of herbalists in abolitionist movements.
About the workshop: This workshop explores the role of herbalism in supporting prisoners, families and communities affected by incarceration, and herbalist roles in the abolition of these systems of oppression. There are more than 11.5 million people incarcerated worldwide, including a massive 2.2 million in the so-called United States. Most are completely excluded from herbalism yet many can find plants cracking through the concrete. These plants can bring hope, connection and health support to people experiencing the worst of state violence.
In this workshop we will explore the health impacts of incarceration, and look at herbal strategies to support people experiencing traumatic stress and PTSD. We will look at some practical uses of plants commonly found in prison yards and what practicing herbalism in prison can look like. The workshop explores ‘abolition’ as a framework and the role of herbalists within these movements.
