Episode 56 The Pennsylvania Head
On December 12, 2014, a teenager in Economy Borough, PA in Beaver County, made a shocking discovery as he walked in the woods along Mason Road. What he found turned out to be an embalmed human head of a woman. The discovery shocked local police who weren't used to that kind of crime happening in their jurisdiction. Attempts to ID the head proved fruitless despite a lot of publicity, casts, and drawings being made of the head. Police wondered if a grave someplace had been robbed, or if the head had come from a funeral home someplace. There were few clues to work with other than the cuts made to the head, the eyeholes which contained rubber balls, and the dental work which proved the woman had been alive after the 1980's to 1990's. Even attempts to obtain DNA from the head came up empty. In an effort to get attention for the case, and ID the woman, investigators enlisted the help of Netflix who featured the case on a 2024 episode of Unsolved Mysteries. In the episode, one potential person who might have some information about the head was featured. He failed multiple polygraphs, and he just happened to live directly across from where the head was discovered. When he died, he took any secrets he may of held about the origin of the head to his grave. Today, the case remains unsolved.

Episode 54 The Austin Yogurt Shop Murders Part 1
On December 6, 1991, an unthinkable crime happened in Austin, Texas. As four girls were closing up the ICBY shop at 11pm(I Can't believe it's Yogurt), they were attacked by one or more people. What followed was a terrible quadruple murder in which each girl was shot execution style in the head. The victims were four teenage girls: 13-year-old Amy Ayers, 17-year-old Eliza Thomas, 17-year-old Jennifer Harbison, and Jennifer's 15-year-old sister Sarah
The crime also included sexual assault, and arson. When firefighters arrived on scene thinking that they were dealing with a burning business, they found the bodies of the four girls inside, and it didn't take long to realize that they didn't die as a result of the flames.
The murders of the four young girls shocked Austin residents, and they began to wonder if an outsider had come to their city and done the unthinkable, or even more unsettling, could the killer or killers be living amongst them? Police rounded up every customer that they could find that had been in the store that night hoping that they may have important information. From the witnesses who were there that night, an assorted cast of potential suspects was generated. Police worked feverishly to locate and question all of these people. They only found some. Eventually, a group of local teens were focused on, and two were convicted of the crimes following an alleged confession. The convictions were later thrown out, and DNA believed to be from the killer did not match any of the young men suspected in the crime. The case went cold and remains unsolved to this day. However, investigators in this case have worked hard to solve it, and hope that DNA and other evidence may one day ID the real killer, or killers. In part 1 of our coverage, we discuss the crime, and the aftermath, as well as the investigation. In our next segment, we will look at other potential suspects as well as DNA clues.

Episode 52 The Burger Chef Murders Part 1
The small town of Speedway, Indiana is world famous for its connection to the Indianapolis 500, but in November, 1978, it would capture headlines for a perplexing quadruple murder known as 'The Burger Chef Murders'. On the night of Friday November 17th, four young workers from a local Burger Chef fast food restaurant were in the process of closing up the store when something went terribly wrong, and they were presumably taken from the store. When the unoccupied store was discovered, and police investigated, they found signs of what appeared to be a robbery with cash missing from the store's safe and registers. All that was left behind were rolls of coins, as well as the purses and jackets of the missing workers.
Incredibly, despite the fact that local fast-food restaurants had been robbed leading up to this event, the authorities believed that the group of employees had taken the money and run off. They didn't investigate the store as a crime scene and instead, told management that they could clean up and open for business as usual. Two days later, the bodies of 20 year old Jayne Friedt, 16 year old Daniel Davis, 16 year old Mark Flemmonds, and 18 year old Ruth Ellen Shelton were found by hikers in a secluded area of Johnson County; 20 miles away from the Burger Chef. Three of the four, Ruth, Jayne, and Daniel had all been shot or stabbed to death. The fourth victim Mark, had signs of bludgeoning on his face, and had died from choking on his own blood. Jayne's Chevy Vega was found abandoned not far from the Burger Chef.
The brutal murders of the four young Burger Chef workers set off shock waves, and police were under tremendous pressure to solve the case in light of them botching the early investigation. Rumors swirled as to who may have been responsible for the murders, and whether the murders were linked to the earlier string of fast-food robberies, or to the 'Speedway Bombings' case; in which as series of bombs exploded in Speedway two months earlier in September. The case eventually went cold, but despite the police failures early on in the case, it seems that there may be physical evidence in this case that may help lead to the identity of the killer, or killers.
In Part 1 of the Burger Chef Murders, the panel discusses what happened, and what evidence may help solve the case. In the next episode, we will discuss potential suspects in the case.

Episode 50 Bible John Part 1
Between 1968 and 1969, a serial killer who came to be known as 'Bible John' stalked women in Glasgow Scotland. He would take the lives of three women in brutal fashion. All three women had various things that connected them, including a dance hall that they all visited. Despite eyewitnesses seeing the likely killer, and a composite sketch being created of him, he was never identified. In this episode, the team talks about the details of the case, and the things that are common between the victims. In part of of our Bible John coverage, we will look at some suspects in the case.

Episode 48 The Santa Rosa Hitchhiker Murders Part 1
From 1972-1973, the city of Santa Rosa, CA experienced a series of abuductions and murders of girls and young women in the area. Most of them were known to be hitchhikers. There are thought to be at least 8 victims. Some of the victims were found dumped in the area. One had been poisoned to death, and others had been strangled. At least one victim was never found.
Were these abductions and murders the work of one person, or a team of two killers working together? Or could two separate killers have been selecting victims from the same area at the same time? In part 1 of our coverage, we explore the victimology, and the area where the abductions and murdered happened in, as well as where the bodies were dumped. We are joined by Geoprofiler Doug MacGregor.

Episode 46 The Oakland County Child Murders Part 2
Our deep dive into the Oakland County Child Murders case continues, and in this episode, we look closely at two prominent suspects who may have been ruled out based on the results of polygraph tests alone. Both of these men had records for unspeakable sex crimes against children. Although they look good on paper, the polygraph tests alone seem to have taken them off the suspect list, but can we find something more solid that could perhaps take them off of the suspect list, or will we find something that makes them worthy of being placed back on it? Once again, we are joined by Geographic Profiler Doug MacGregor in this episode.

Episode 45 The Oakland County Child Murders Part 1
For just over a one year period between February 1976 and March 1977, four children were abducted and murdered in Oakland County, Michigan. Although two of the victims were boys, and two were girls, and despite clear evidence of rape and binding on the male victims, police came to believe that one killer, or a set of killers was responsible for each abduction and murder. In each case, the victims were held for extended periods of time, fed, and cleaned. Each was re-dressed prior to being disposed of. Fear struck the residents across that area, and most parents were afraid to let their kids go outside alone. Just as suddenly as the murders started, they came to an end. A task force was put together to hunt down the killer or killers. Along the way, they looked into several suspects and local sex offenders of children. They also fielded many tips including one of them that led police to search almost every AMC Gremlin withing sight along with their drivers. In the end, the case went unsolved and remains so to this day. The good news is, there appears to be clues to work with, and physical evidence that may one day solve this case.
In part 1 of our investigation into the Oakland County Child Murders, we explore each attack and examine the known clues. We also explore where the victims were abducted from, and where their bodies were dumped, and we are aided by Geographic Profiler Doug MacGregor to see if we can find any clues in the killer's movements.

Episode 44 Ladies of the Lake
Between 1994 and 1997, a serial killer preyed on sex workers in the Parkdale neighborhood of Toronto, Onatario in Canada. The bodies of 3 women were found in or on the shore of Lake Ontario. The crime scenes were nearly identical. Each victim was strangled and violated,then drowned. Other elements of the crime scenes mirrored each other as well,demonstrating a clear signature with each crime.A potential suspect was developed, but for reasons that aren't fully understood, a strong enough case couldn't be made against him and the case remains unsolved. Who killed the Ladies of the Lake? In this episode, the team discusses what potential clues and evidence might finally answer this question.

Episode 43 The Dardeen Family Murders
In November, 1987, a shocking crime happened in the small community of Ina, Illinois.
After failing to show up for work, police were called to a secluded mobile home to do a welfare check on 28 year old Russell Keith Dardeen, and his family. When police entered the trailer through an unlocked door, they were greeted with a gruesome scene. In the bed of the Dardeen bedroom, police found the bodies of 30 year old Ruby Elaine Darlene, and her son 2 year old Peter. They had been beaten to death with a baseball bat that belonged to the Dardeens. Sadly, Elaine was pregnant with the couple's second child; a daughter, and during the beating, Elaine went into labor and delivered her daughter. Coldy, the newborn baby was also beaten to death. Missing from the home was Keith, and his car. Police first suspected that Keth had killed his family and fled, but the mystery deepened when he was found shot to death in a field a mile from his home. His penis had been cut off. It was a ghastly scene. His car was soon found parked very close to the local police station.
The Dardeen family murders shocked Ina residents. An investigation by police could reveal no motive for the murders. There was no sign of infidelity, or anything shady in the Dardeen's lives. Robbery also was ruled out because valuable items were left behind, and there was no sign of forced entry. In the weeks and months leading up to the murders, Keith reportedly had been very concerned about crime in the area- so much so, that he planned to move his family out of Ina without even having a new job lined up. Some people would theorize that Keith was worried about a very specific threat, but what that threat was if there was one, eluded detectives. Because Keith was very wary of letting people into his home, it seemed possible that the Dardeens knew their killer or killers, and let them in.
Without clear suspects, it wasn't long before a violent serial killer named Tommy Lee Sells became a potential POI in the case. He had a history of similar crimes, and admitted to killing the Dardeens. But Sells's story kept changing, and the facts of the case that he gave police had been published in newspapers. So was he the killer of the Dardeens, or a red herring? Police have been tight lipped about the case and what evidence the have, but to date, there have been no arrests.

Episode 42 The Tylenol Murders
In the Fall of 1982, seven people in the Chicago area fell ill and died after taking over the counter Tylenol that was purchased at various locations across the city. It soon became clear that all seven had died as the result of cyanide poisoning, and city officials working with Tylenol manufacturers raced against time to get the product off of store shelves; sending the public into full fledged panic. The murders were deemed to be the result of product tampering, ushering in new methods of safety sealing the medication; methods which still exist to this day. The authorities didn't have much to work with and sought to ID one bearded man who was captured on grainy store surveillance, but he never came forward, and the murders were never solved. In this episode, the team discusses the clues, possible motives, and a strong potential suspect, as well as copycat crimes that were inspired by the Tylenol murders.

Episode 41 Oakey 'AL' Kite
Oakey Kite, who went by Al, was a friendly and well-liked 53 year old man living in a home in a quiet section of Aurora, Colorado in May, 2004. When his lifeless body was found in his finished basement apartment, it was quickly obvious to authorities that his death was a homicide, and a brutal one at that. He had been bound, beaten, tortured, and stabbed. A motive for Al's murder was elusive; he didn't have any enemies, and nothing in his personal life seemed to point to a reason that he would be killed in such a brutal fashion. Whoever had killed Al had carefully wiped down the home for prints, sanitized the crime scene, and destroyed potential evidence.
It soon became apparent that the suspect in this case was a mysterious man who had answered Al's classified ad offering to rent out his basement apartment. This man it seems used a variety of accents, and disguises, and multiple sketches of the suspect seem to show two different looking men of different ages.It also became clear that this same man may have replied to other area classified ads for rooms to rent before settling on Al as his victim.
The man's image was captured on an ATM camera after he used Al's debit card to withdraw money, but he was wearing a mask in the video, so it didn't help much,although, it hasn't stopped some online sleuths from commenting that the man's eyes are very similar to those of serial killer, Israel Keyes- a killer that often used extreme measures like Al's killer to evade detection.
Golden State Killer investigator, Paul Holes, looked into this case extensively on his show 'The DNA of Murder' and we consulted him for this episode. Paul is convinced that this killer may have been a 'pro' or hitman that came to the U.S. from another country, and a single bit of DNA blood evidence found at the scene seems to back this up, but to date, Al's killer has evaded capture.
In this episode, the team discusses the case, the clues, and the M.O. of the killer, and compares it to other crimes with some similarities.
Al's would be renter, who identified himself as "Robert Cooper," claimed to be from the East Coast and to work for Wells Fargo Bank. He provided false identification and contact information on his rental application. Witnesses generally described the suspect male as white, in his forties or fifties, 5’10", 170 to 180 pounds, with black or brown hair. Witnesses reported that he walked with a limp and used a cane, and another reported that he spoke with a possible Romanian accent.

Episode 40 The Monster of Florence
In this episode, the team explores Italy's most infamous unsolved murder series by a killer dubbed 'The Monster of Florence'
For a decade from the mid 1970s until the mid 1980's, the Monster of Florence stalked unsuspecting couples on secluded lover's lane areas, and was responsible for at least 14 murders in the Florence countryside. The attacks were brutal, sadistic, and sexual in nature. Despite a few tantalizing clues; including possible eyewitnesses, and a letter mailed to police which included the flesh of one of his victims, this diabolical killer was never caught. In this episode, the team discusses the known victims, as well as other potential cases he may be linked to, and analyzes potential suspects.

Episode 39 The Black Dahlia; Rosenda Mondragon
In our continuing coverage of the Black Dahlia murder, we look closely at the case of 20 year old Rosenda Mondragon to see if her murder may be connected to the Black Dahlia murder, Rosenda's nude and possibly mutilated body was found in Los Angeles in July, 1947. She had been strangled with a silk stocking. There were clues to work with along with eyewitnesses that provided information to police, but the case went cold, and to this day, it's not clear if her death is connected to the Black Dahlia murder.

Episode 36 'The Black Dahlia' Elizabeth Short Part 1
In January, 1947, the body of a dead woman was found in a lot in the Leimert Park section of Los Angeles, California. But this wasn't a case of a simple body dumping, the unidentified woman, who would become known as 'The Black Dahlia' had been bisected at the waist, and her body mutilated. Her mouth had been sliced to resemble a ghoulish smile, and she was covered in cigar burns. Examination of her body by the ME would reveal more disturbing details of the torture she endured finally culminating in her death. Eventually, the Black Dhalia was identified as 22 year-old Elizabeth Short, a down on her luck transplant from the East Coast. Elizabeth's murder shocked residents of Los Angeles, and quickly made national headlines. Police were pressured to find the killer fearing that he may strike again. Soon, taunting letters possibly, from the killer, were received. These only deepened the mystery and put more pressure on police. But with no clear suspects, the case began to cool. Over the decades since Short was murdered, theories abound as to who was responsible for her grueseome murder. Although police had potential suspects, the case officially remains unsolved to this day. Some theories have linked Elizabeth's murder to other similar murders.
In part 1 of our deep dive into the murder of Elizabeth Short, the team introduces the case to listeners, and takes a closer look at some of the clues in an effort to see if we can solve one of the most infamous, and shocking unsolved American mysteries.

Episode 34 Tyson Wright
On January 29th, 2021, firefighters in the Zena, Oklahoma County area responded to the report of a burning car. When they finally put out the flames, they found 49 year old Tyson Wright dead inside. The fire was determined to be a case of arson, and Wright didn't die as a result of the fire, he had been shot to death. Despite theories and rumors about who murdered Tyson Wright and why, his murder remains a mystery.

Episode 33 Phillip Porter
In January, 2012, 56 year-old Phillip Porter was brutally murdered in his Grove, Oklahoma mobile home. His throat was slashed in a bloody crime scene. Originally, the authorities ruled the death a suicide, but it soon became clear that this was a homicide, in part due to no weapon being found. Rumors began to swirl about who might be responsible and why, but nothing strong enough to make an arrest ever materialized, and the case remains unsolved to this day.
The Citizen Detective team is hoping to sort through all of the rumors and get to the truth based on the clues and evidence.

Episode 30 Barbara Johnson-Willard
The team continues to work alongside Delaware County, Oklahoma officials tacking some of their unsolved and cold cases. In this episode, the panel dives into the case of 29 year old Barbara Johnson-Willard who went missing from Jay, Oklahoma on June 17, 1996 after a late night out watching a movie. Ten days after she was last seen, her red Mercury Cougar was found in a ravine near Colcord in southern Delaware County. Someone had attempted to set it on fire. Although Barbara was nowhere to be found, investigators discovered evidence of decaying flesh in the trunk of the car. Barbara was never seen again. It's not clear whether Barbara ever made it to her home the night she vanished, but there was no sign of a struggle or forced entry there. However, police did discover that Barbara's bedding from her bed was missing. A look into Barbara's background linked her to a man in prison named John Lee Weeks, a serial rapist. Evidence including DNA and prints recovered from Barbara's car links Weeks to it, but to date, he hasn't been charged in Barbara's case.

Episode 28 Danny Oakley and Doris Harris
We kick off our partnership with Delaware County, Oklahoma in examining some of their cold & unsolved cases, with the February 1996 murders of Danny Oakley and Doris Harris.
On the morning of February 21st, 1996,firefighters responded to a housefire in Afton, Oklahoma. Inside one of the bedrooms responders found the bodies of Danny Oakley and Doris Harris. Both victims had been shot once in the head.
Investigators spoke to many witnesses who reported that Danny was in fear of being arrested or killed in the days before his death. Danny was reported to be a major drug dealer in the area. One theory was that the couple was killed because of drug money owed to a supplier. Another theory was that they were murdered because of a feud between Danny and a different man.
The day after the killings, a man was found passed out behind the wheel of one of the victim’s vehicles eighteen miles away. The man was arrested on other charges and questioned about the murders. Questioning led police to another man who reportedly spent the day before with the victims. As each witness told their tale, police quickly realized they had a long list of potential suspects in the case, yet to date, the case remains unsolved, and the families of Danny Oakley and Doris Harris are still awaiting justice.

Authorities in Delaware County,Oklahoma have asked for the team's help in bringing attention to several unsolved and cold cases in their jurisdiction. Dustin Ray Carver, (male 20) missing from Kansas, Oklahoma since March 2014.

Johnny Lee Eller, (male 34) was found dead of a gunshot wound while on vacation at Red 11 Port Resort in Grove, Oklahoma.
Misty Dawn Faulkner, (female, 29) missing since January 2011 from Eucha, Oklahoma.
Doris M. Harris and Dan "Danny" Oakley, (Female, 40, male, 37) were found shot to death in Oakley's mobile home near Afton, Oklahoma in February 1996.
Barbara Johnson-Willard, (female, 29) missing from Colcord, Oklahoma since June 1996.
Timur Mardeyev, (male, 27) Missing from Grove, Oklahoma since November 2011.
Phillip Porter, (male, 56) was found dead in his home with his throat cut in January 2012. Ruled a suicide.
Brett Adam Scheele, (male, 37) was found dead in a woodsy area in Colcord, Oklahoma in December 2021.
Peggy Sweeten, (female, 52) missing from her home in Grove, Oklahoma since January 1988.
Christopher Teel, (male, 32) was last seen on January 2, 2017, in Jay, Oklahoma. Remains found in February 2023.
Tyson Wright, (male, 49) was found dead in burned vehicle in the Zena area in January 2021.

Episode 26 Mr. Cruel
In the late 1980s and early 1990's, a serial predator targeted young girls in the Melbourne, Australia area. He would enter homes with a weapon subduing family members while sexually assaulting or abducting young female victims. Often, he wore a balaclava to disguise his face. Eventually, at least one one of his attacks and abductions resulted in murder. Despite police a lot of clues to work with, much of them provided by Mr Cruel's brave young victims, the case remains unsolved to this day.
The Citizen Detective team discusses the various suspects in this case, and whether there may be other victims. They also discuss how modern technology and DNA Science, may be able to help ID this predator once and for all. Geoprofiler Douglas MacGregor, who has heavily researched this case and has been a guest on the show before, is back to lend his expertise to the discussion.

Episode 25 The West Memphis Three
In this episode, the team is joined by Bob Ruff of the Truth and Justice Podcast to explore one of the biggest unsolved cases in the true crime world; The West Memphis Three.
On May 5, 1993, Eight year olds Christopher Byers, Michael Moore, and Stevie Branch went out on their bikes in West Memphis, Arkansas, and didn't come home. A search led to the discovery of their bodies in a creek area known as Robin Hood Hills. All 3 had been murdered; the victims of blunt force trauma, and drowning. They were nude, and bound, and it appeared to investigators that at least one of them had been mutilated. In an era of 'Satanic Panic', police quickly focuded their attention on 3 local young men, Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley Jr. They apparently were suspected because of their goth like appearance, and because they believed that that at least one of them, Damien Echols, was a Satanist. With no physical evidence connecting any of the 3 men to the crimes, it was a false confession, and lying witnesses that led to them being convicted for the murders. The 3 men served 18 years in prison before being released after the trio signed Alford Pleas in which they maintained their innocence but acknowledged that prosecutors have evidence to convict them. As part of a plea deal, they were given time served as their sentences.
Now that the 3 are out of prison, they maintain their innocence, and want their names cleared once and for all, and for the real killer to be brought to justice. They have pushed to have physical evidence in the case tested for DNA that might clear them, but the state has refused to allow that to happen.
30 years later, the case remains at a stand still. Did the police arrest the right men, or did the real killer get away with the brutal murders of 3 little boys?
In this episode, the team sifts thru the details and evidence in the case, to figure out what happened, and who might be responsible. Bob Ruff worked on the documentary The Forgotten West Memphis Three that focuses on this case, and he shared his expertise and insights with the team.

Episode 24 Lizzie Borden
On August 4th, 1892, a shocking and brutal double murder took place in Fall River, Massachusetts, and became one of America's most infamous and discussed cases.
Andrew Borden, a wealthy businessman, and his wife Abby were found hacked to death in their home. They had been killed with an axe. Word of the bloody crime scene and shocking crime quickly got out to area residents who wondered if a madman was living amongst them. But suspicion quickly fell on one of Andrew's own Daughters, Lizzie. At times, her story from that day changed, and witnesses observed her doing suspicious things. She was eventually tried for the murder of her father and stepmother, but acquitted. No other arrests in the case were ever made.
Did Lizzie get away with murder, or might there be more than meets the eye? Over a century later, unanswered questions remain, and the case continues to captivate people.

Episode 23 The Texarkana Phantom
From late Winter to the Spring of 1946, a hooded killer dubbed 'The Phantom' terrorized the sleely Texarkana region of Texas and Arkansas. In a series of moonlight attacks mostly on youg couples parked on lover's lanes, the killer is believed to have been responsible for at least 5 deaths. The attacks were brutal, and sexual in nature. Law enforcement at the time scrambled to catch the killer before he struck again, but as suddenly as the attacks started, they ended.
The killer was never caught, but several possible suspects were identified.

Episode 21 The Zodiac Killer Part 2
In the second part of our Zodiac Killer coverage, we explore 2 separate attacks. First we examine the September 1969 attack on Cecelia Shepard and Bryan Hartnell in which the killer wore an executioner's hood while he repeatedly stabbed the couple in broad daylight at Napa County's tranquil Lake Berryessa. Next we look at the October, 1969 murder of cab driver Paul Stine in which he shot Stine in San Francisco's most upscale neighborhood signaling a departure from the couple's normal MO of targeting younger couples. After the murder of Paul Stine, there was never a confirmed Zodiac attack again.

Episode 20 The Zodiac Killer Part 1
On December 20, 1968, just after 11pm, 2 teenagers David Faraday and Betty Lou Jensen were parked on sleepy and dark Lake Herman Rd on the outskirts of Vallejo, CA. The spot where they parked was one often chosen by young people to due it's privacy. On this night, they weren't alone. A killer pulled up beside their car. What happened next is not known, but what is known is that minutes later, a woman driving by the scene found both of them shot lying near David's car. She raced off to get help and brought police back to the scene. Responding officers found David barely clinging to life. He had been shot once behind the ear at close range. 28 feet away, Betty Lou lay dead, the victim of multiple shots to her back. The randomness of the double murder and clear lack of a motive cast a dark cloud over the coming Christmas holiday. As the holidays passed, the murders faded from memory.
Seven months later, on the night of July 4, 1969, just a few miles away from where David and Betty Lou had been killed, Darlene Ferrin and Mike Mageau sat talking on a different Lover's lane area in Vallejo; Blue Rock Springs park. Their peaceful night was interrupted around Midnight when a car pulled in behind them. It's driver exited the vehicle and carrying a flashlight, walked up to the passenger side of Darlene's Corvair. WIthout warning, the man shined the flashlight into the car and opened fire shooting Darlene and Mike multiple times. He walked back to his car not realizing that his victims were still alive. When Mike cried out in pain, the shooter came back to the car and shot both Mike and Darlene additional times. He then walked back to his car and drove off leaving Darlene in Mike badly injured. First responders rushed Mike and Darlene from the scene. Darlene would not survive her injuries. While Mike was badly injured, he would recover and provide police with a few details. While police were processing the scene 40 minutes after the shooting, a caller using a phonebooth in Vallejo called the operator and reported the attack. But he wasn't a witness, he was the shooter, and he provided details of his crime. He also took credit for the 1968 Lake Herman Rd murders. But the killer was far from done, and from that moment on, using the moniker 'The Zodiac', he would terrorize the SF Bay area for the nect 5 years.

Episode 19 Cheri Jo Bates
On October 30, 1966, 18 year old college Freshman Cheri Jo Bates was brutally murdered on her college campus at Riverside City College in Riverside, CA. She was savagely stabbed and her throat slashed. Her murder shocked the quiet Southern CA city. Residents wondered who would kill the pretty and popular cheerleader. Police theorized that Cheri's killer disabled her VW Bug while Cheri was in the college library and when she came out to leave and found her car disabled, the killer came along acting as a good samaritan and offering help. After gaining Cheri's trust, he led her to a dimly lit alley between two abandoned homes on school property and initiated his attack. 30 days after Cheri Jo was killed, an anonymous typed letter was sent to police & the local press claiming responsibility for Cheri Jo's murder. Police initially believed that the confession letter contained details only the killer could know, but in reality, much of what was in the letter was published in AP news stories about the case. Additional letters would come in Cheri Jo's case 6 months after her murder. This time the hand scrawled letters were sent to not only to police and the press, but cruelly, also to Cheri Jo's father.
The Riverside Police locked onto a suspect that they felt was a jilted suitor of Cheri Jo's. He was never identified publicly, but was given the moniker 'Bob Barnett' in online discussions of the case. For years, police were interested in this suspect, but did not have enough to build a case against him. Complicating matters, he moved out of the country. When the suspect returned to the US for a visit, police swooped in and obtained his DNA for comparison against DNA in Cheri Jo's case. It seems that the DNA collected from the suspect did not match DNA in the Bates case. But that did not stop Riverside PD from pursuing a case against their favorite suspect.
In 1970, a tipster in Riverside read a story about the infamous Zodiac Killer attacks and letters happening in the SF Bay area over 400 miles North of Riverside. Feeling that Cheri's case may be connected to the Zodiac crimes, the tipster reached out to SF Chronicle reporter Paul Avery asking him to see if the cases may be connected. Avery came away convinced that Cheri Jo's case was connected to the Zodiac case. The state's top handwriting expert Sherwood Morrill agreed that writing on letters in the Bates case matched writing in the Zodiac case. Police however were split on the conclusion. While investigators in the Zodiac case were open to the possibility that Cheri Jo Bates was an early Zodiac victim, Riverside PS dismissed the idea, instead focusing on their favorite suspect. Decades later, Cheri Jo's case and the Zodiac case remain hopelessly intertwined, and both are still unsolved.

Episode 18 The Night Marauder
Between 1919 and 1926, a serial predator attacked, raped, and murdered a string of victims in the Knoxville and Alcoa areas of Tennessee. Despite people being on high alert, the attacker who came to be known as the 'Night Marauder' slipped through the cracks under the cover of night looking for victims. At first, he targeted lone women, but then became more brazen and attacked when their were multiple people in one home, or when a husband was home. There were a few people accused of the crime, and one very promising suspect, but the case was never solved.
In this episode, the team discusses the case and what clues or evidence there was, and whether or not there is enough to solve the case once and for all. We are joined by GeoProfiler; Douglas MacGregor and Dr. Nancy Locklin-Sofer who has worked extensively on this case.

Episode 17 The Short Family Murders
In August 2002, a brutal double murder shocked the residents of the Oak Level community in Henry County, Virginia. Michael and Mary Short were found dead in their home, the victims of an execution style shooting. There was no sign of robbery as cash and other valuable items were in the home. What was missing however was the Short's 9 year old daughter, Jennifer. A search of the area failed to locate her and despite an Amber alert going out, there were no signs of her.
As police worked to figure out who murdered this average Virginia family and presumably abducted the youngest member, the community feared that a killer was moving amongst them and was on edge. Six weeks later, a horiffic discovery would take the case in a new direction. Jennifer's decomposed remains were located on a property in Stoneville NC, about 30 miles from the Short home. Like her parents, Jennifer too had been shot to death. An autopsy could not reveal if she has been sexually assaulted.
News of the triple murder spread like wild fire through the area between where the Shorts lived, and where Jennifer's remains were found, and soon a potential suspect would emerge. A tip led authorities to investigate a man who lived not far from where Jennifer's remains were found. What tipsters told police about this potential suspect sounded almost too hard to believe, That's because it was.The tipsters had made up a story about this man and police spent time and resources investigating him.
The case went cold. Along the way, it was revealed that local police investigating the case were caught up in a string of illegal activities that overshadowed the investigation into the Short Family Murders. New leadership within the police department aided by the State Police & FBI vowed to keep trying to solve the case. One of the few clues police had to work with was a mysterious man in a distinct truck seen parked close to the Short home shortly after the murders. The man described as a White Male in his 40s was seen sitting in a White Single Cab truck with wooden side rails. Police wanted to talk to this man, but he was never identified.
Today, more than 20 years after the murders of the Short Family, the case remains unsolved.

Episode 16 The Mary Morris Murders
On October 12, 2000, Mary Henderson Morris, a 48 year old bank loan officer didn't show up for work.
The Baytown, Houston area woman was very professional, and very reliable, so her co-workers were alarmed. When her husband Jay Morris became aware that she didn't show up for work, police were called in to look for Mary. According to Jay Morris, his wife had left that morning for work after 6am as usual, and nothing was amiss. Hours later, Mary Morris was found dead in her burning car in a secluded area 3 miles from her home. The fire was so intense, that it took days to identify the body inside as that of Mary Morris, and her cause of death could not be determined. Because a powerful accelerant had been used to start the fire, police suspected that Mary was the victim of a homicide from the beginning, but they were stumped and could not find anyone who had a motive to kill the friendly and professional mother and grandmother. Days later, when Mary's daughter Marilyn went to pick up her mother's effects following the funeral, the mystery took a bizarre turn.
Marilyn was told that they were not done processing her mom's remains. She was confused after just burying her mom. After some checking, the authorities confirmed that the remains still in their custody were that of a different Mary Morris; 39 year old Mary McGinnis Morris.
Like Mary Henderson Morris, Mary McGinnis Morris was found dead less than 72 hours later in her vehicle in the Houston area. Mary McGinnis Morris, a nurse, had been shot to death. The gun used to kill her was found in her car, and it turned out that it belonged to her husband, Mike Morris. Mike Morris told police that he had given the gun to his wife for protection. Mary had had run-ins with a co worker and apparently was on edge. Police disclosed that a 911 call came in during the Mary McGinnis Morris's murder, and that the murder itself, or parts of it may have been recorded. Although police did not release the 911 call, they said it was chilling. As for Mike Morris, he had an alibi for the time of the murder; he was at a movie with his daughter Katy at the time of the murder.
Suspicion fell on the husbands in both cases as is typical in these kinds of murders, but both men lawyered up. Things that they said and did after the murders along with holes in their stories were scrutinized. Other potential suspects were looked at, but to date, no arrests have been made in either case. After being featured in a popular episode of the hit show Unsolved Mysteries, the 'Mary Morris Murders' became a popular case to discuss on online forums like Reddit and Websleuths, and several podcasts have done episodes about the murders. All kinds of theories and rumors have popped up over the years, the most popular being that both women were killed by some sort of inept hitman, but at the end of the day, there is nothing that conclusively proves that.
There are similarities in the two cases. Both women were well-liked professional women in the Houston area. They were of similar age and appearance. They had both been found dead in their cars less than 72 hours apart. It was reported that rings were missing from both women, but later that claim would be challenged when one of the rings turned up.
The murders of both Mary Henderson Morris and Mary McGinnis Morris remain unsolved and are as popular as ever on discussion forums. Unfortuately, this has led to a lof of misconceptions, inaccuracies, and gossip. In this episode of Citizen Detective, listeners will hear directly from Mary Henderson Morris's daughter Marilyn, and Mary McGinnis Morris's daughter Katy, in an effort to once and for all separate fact from fiction, and help the panel sift through all the puzzling clues and details in the Mary Morris Murders.

Episode 15 The Doodler
In the late 1960s and well into the 1970s, the historic city of San Francisco, CA was overwhelmed by high profile crimes including the Zodiac murders, the Zebra killings, and the SLA/Patty Hurst crime spree. But one series of murders there in the mid 70s failed to grab the public's attention. From January, 1974 until September, 1975, an unknown killer, or killers, quietly targeted San Francisco's gay community. The series of murders was dubbed 'The Doodler' murders, because one potential suspect was an unidentified African-American male who used to sketch portraits of men in local gay bars, perhaps to gain their trust. Despite all attempts to ID this person, police were unsuccessful, but they did discover a strong suspect who remains unnamed publicly.
Murders attributed to the Doodler range from half a dozen to more than a dozen. Some possible victims however were said to be lucky enough to escape from the Doodler including a famous actor, and people from the political world.
The Doodler case officially remains unsolved. Join the Citizen Detective team as we explore the clues in this case.
Episode 14 The Moscow Idaho Murders
The college town of Moscow, Idaho a population of 25,000 people was shocked and on edge following the brutal November 13, 2022 quadruple murders of 4 college students in their off campus home.
The victims Ethan Chapin, 20, Madison Mogen, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20, and Kaylee Goncalves, 21, were found stabbed to death in a bloody crime scene by other housemates.
Police called the murders 'isolated' and 'targeted' and stated that the residents of Moscow were not in danger. But without motives, answers, or an arrest, the community feared for their safety and many students chose to leave the area rather than stay there and continue their studies.
The case became front page news and the lead story nationwide as the press descended on Moscow. The police, aided by the FBI, scrambled to find the killer, but motives and leads were in short supply.
Finally, a major clue came in the form of a White Hyundai captured on surveillance footage near the crime scene around the time of the attack. Police made a public plea for help in identifying the car.
After more than 19,000 tips in the case, police finally made an arrest in late December on the other side of the country. . 28 year old Bryan Kohberger, was arrested in Pennsylvania, and charged with four counts of first degree murder, and one count of felony burglary. He's currently awaiting for a preliminary hearing which won't come until June, 2023.
An affidavit shed some light on the investigation into Kohberger, but only scratches the surface. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, and theories. In this episode, the panel discusses what's been reported in the case, and mentioned in the affidavit, and discusses what evidence the authorities may have against the suspect. We also hear from our citizen detectives who share their takes on the case.

Episode 13 Cheryl Lynn Tunnell Springfield
In this episode, the team explores the December 25, 1980 murder of 21 year old Cheryl Lynn Tunnell Springfield. Early that Christmas morning, she was found beaten and strangled to death near the Christmas tree in the Fort Worth, TX home that she had recently moved into. An ironing cord was still wrapped around her neck. Cheryl had been sexually assaulted.
Just feet away from her in the next room, her young son was found unharmed. In another room, another child slept unharmed as well. Since it was her ex husband who found Cheryl, he became a suspect in the murder, but after cooperating with police, and taking polygraphs, he was ruled out.
At Cheryl's funeral, her sister Jan promised Cheryl that she would not stop trying to find her killer, but despite her efforts, the case remains unsolved 42 years later.
It came to light that one of Cheryl's roommates had been in a relationship with a violent man who she later married. He had a troubling history of violence; violence that included murder, and he is serving a life sentence in prison. Was he the killer, or a red herring? The team, joined by Cheryl's sister Jan, explores the evidence, and the possibilities.

Episode 12 Katherine 'Katie' Janness
The big city of Atlanta, GA is a melting pot in many ways. With a population of half a million people, it's as diverse a city as you can find. There are countless people of every race, creed, and religion that call Atlanta home, and there is a very proud, and accpeted LGBTQ community there. Someplace in the big city of Atlanta, a sadistic and vicious killer has managed to get away so far with a brutal crime that shocked residents of Atlanta.
In the early morning hours of July 28, 2021, 40 year old Atlanta resident Katherine 'Katie' Janness was murdered in the scrolling Piedmont park along with her beloved dog Bowie. Katie often walked Bowie in the park without incident, but on this occasion, she crossed paths with a cold blooded killer who savagelt stabbed Katie and Bowie to death. Katie was stabbed dozens of times.Even more shocking, her killer carved letters into her body.
Sadly, it was Katie's girlfriend Emma who discovered Katie and Bowie dead. She had gone out to search the park for them after they didn't come home.
In the aftermath of the murders, it came to light that many of the park's cameras were not working. Had they been operational, this case may be solved. The city has now taken steps to ensure that the park is secure and that cameras are working properly, but sadly, it's too late in this case.
The news of the shocking murders of Katie and Bowie understandably left the community on edge, and some residents were wary of venturing out after dark fearing that a maniac was moving amongst them. But did Katie and Bowie die randomly at the hands of a deranged serial killer, or were they targeted by someone who was familiar with them? Could Katie have been killed in a hate crime because she was a Lesbian? Even Katie's girlfriend Emma has been accused of being involved, and police have not publicly cleared her.
Unfortuately, there are many questions and possibilities, and not a lot that points in any one direction.

Episode 11 Janette Roberson
In January, 1983, 27 year old mother and wife Janette Roberson was dealing with a lot. She had recently moved to Reed City, Michigan looking towards a brighter future, but as the year began, she found herself facing issues beyone her control.
Janette had recently found out that her husband was having an affair, and the couple were in the midst of a separation. To make matters worse, Janette had been receiving troubling phone calls from an unknown caller at her home. But Janette focused on rasing her kids, and on her job at the local Gambles store in Reed City. Janette's work in the pet department located in the basement of Gambles ensured her a certain amount of peace, but it's location being both quiet and secluded, would provide cover for a dangerous killer.
On January, 19, 1983, Janette worked her shift as she normally did, and somehow despite a store full of employees and customers above her, someone made their way into the basement and brutally stabbed Janette to death. The attack on her was brutal, and sexual in nature. What was perhaps most shocking was that the killer had spent a good amount of time with Janette in the basement before slipping away unnoticed.
Police descended on the gruesome and bloody scene, and what they found was something that they had not seen before in Reed City, a town of only 2,000 people. Police scrambled to find both potential witnesses and suspects. They looked at several people including Janette's husband Alvin, but he was eventually cleared. Sketches were created and circulated of a young man who was a possible person of interest in the case, and police hoped they would ID him. They never did, and the case went cold.
Almost 40 years later, the murder of Janette Roberson remains unsolved. Can clues and evidence collected back in 1983 perhaps lead investigators to the identity of Janette's killer, or is Janette case destined to go unsolved?
In this episode, the Citizen Detective team discusses the possibilities, share their theories. They are joined by Janette's sister, Lana Jarvie who walks the team through what she's been able to learn about her sister's senseless, and violent murder.

Episode 10 The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run
The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, AKA the Cleveland Torso Killer, was responsible for a series of brutally horrific and shocking murders in Cleveland, Ohio in the 1930's.
While no one is sure of his victim counts, some opinions range between 12 and 20. The killer preyed on the down and out citizens of the impoverished Kingsbury Run neighborhood. The still unidentified killer would leave gruesome clues to be found by area residents which included body parts of those that he dismembered and decapitated; some of them while they were still alive.
Although the odds are against this case being solved, the team tries to get in the killer's head to determine who he might have been, and applies modern investigative thinking, and discusses how modern day tools and Science might one day help solve this case.

Episode 9 Tanya Marie Frazier
On July 18th, 1994, 14 year-old Tanya Marie Frazier of Seattle, Washington, left school. She was scheduled to work at a local thrift shop, but never showed up, and she disappeared. Five days later, a dog walker found her partially nude body in an upscale neighborhood, about 10 blocks away from where she was last seen. Her throat had been cut. Weeks later in another location, some of Tanya's belongings turned up.
Police did not have many leads to work with early on, and focused on Tanya's mother, and her mother's boyfriend, but DNA eventually seemed to clear them. Other names and shady people popped up in the case over the years, but police were never able to tie the crime to anyone.
For some reason, whether it's lack of funding, or a misunderstanding of new investigative techniques, the evidence in Tanya's case has not been re-tested recently using the newest technology and tools.
The team is joined in this episode by Rose Winquist and Kathy Decker, two investigators who have not given up on trying to solve the mystery of who murdered Tanya, and why.

Episode 8 Barbara Nantais
In the early morning hours of August 13, 1978, 15 year-old Barbara Nantais and her boyfriend, 17 year-old James Alt were brutally attacked as they slept in their sleeping bag on Torrey Pines State Beach in San Diego, California. Barbara was sexually assaulted, and her breast mutilated. She was strangled and beaten to death. James was also bludgeoned leaving him with severe head wounds and no recollection of the attack or the killer. After he regained consciousness, he stumbled to get help unable to see clearly from the attack.
When first responders arrived, they found evidence of a sadistic and bloody attack.
Jim was rushed to the hospital and doctors raced to save him and repair the terrible wounds he had suffered. Eventually, metal plates had to be put in Jim's skull. As Jim recovered in his hospital bed from his wounds, shockingly, he soon found himself on the suspect list, a list that he claims he is still on to this day.
News of the 1978 attack shocked Torrey Beach area residents, but it wouldn't be the only shocking crime to occur there. Just over 6 years after the murder of Barbara Nantais, 14 year-old Claire Hough was murdered on Torrey Pines State Beach just a couple hundred yards from where Barbara Nantais was murdered. And as in Barbara's case, Claire's breasts were also mutilated. Despite DNA pointing to possible suspects, one a known sex offender, and one a San Diego Crime Lab employee, there has been no official resolution in either murder.
In this episode, the team dives into the clues in both murders to see if there is anything that actually links them, and they are joined by Jim Alt who walks us through the awful details surrounding the attack on him and Barbara, and he discusses his efforts to see justice done, as well as his frustration with police investigating the case.

Episode 7 The Hopper Road Murders
On December 9, 2006, 34-year-old Curtis Francis and 30-year-old Jennifer Burgette were shot to death as they slept in their bed in the home they shared on Hopper Road in Piketon, Ohio.
Despite potential motives, and witnesses who pointed out obvious suspects, the case remains unsolved. The possible murder weapons and other evidence may have been located in a well on a suspect's property, but police efforts to recover the evidence from the well have proved fruitless, further frustrating the victim's families. The case has been side tracked by local police cooperation and ineffectiveness, and overshadowed to a great extent by the high profile case of the Rhoden Family murders, AKA 'The Piketon Massacre'.
In this effort, the team is joined by Curtis's cousin Angie who has spent countless hours trying to get justice for Curtis and Jennifer. She discusses the hurdles and roadblocks that she has encountered, and walks us through the problems that have plagued this case since the very beginning.

Episode 5 The Colonial Parkway Murders Part 1
When 27 year-old Cathy Thomas, and her girlfriend 21 year old Rebecca Ann Dowski were found brutally murdered in October, 1986 inside Cathy's White 1980 Honda Civic along Virginia's idyllic Colonial Parkway, police were at a loss over the brutality and senselessness of the murders. Both women had been bound, strangled, and their throats were cut. Their killer, or killers, had moved their vehicle and pushed it down on embankment towards the water after failing to burn the vehicle using kerosene. Cathy, a stockbroker who had a stellar background as a US Naval academy grad, and Rebecca, a senior at the college of William and Mary, did not seem to have enemies. But a closer look into their background revealed possible motives for the murders. Cathy had essentially been forced out of the Navy because of rules at that time that prohibited gay or Lesbian soldiers from serving in the military. Rebecca also had an ex-boyfriend who was upset with her for leaving him and starting a relationship with Cathy. While there were possible motives for the murders, investigators also needed to consider whether the two women were killed by a random stranger, and were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. It wouldn't be until more couples were murdered or went missing in the same area, that authorities began to suspect that a serial killer was roaming the Colonial Parkway. But were all of the cases actually connected, and was the same person or persons responsible for all of the cases?
In part 1 of our 2 part coverage of the Colonial Parkway Murders, we look very closely at the murders of Cathy Thomas and Rebecca Ann Dowski, aided by Cathy's brother, Bill Thomas, a staunch advocate for not just his sister's case, but all of the familied and cases in the Colonial Parkway series. He has worked tirelessly for over 3 decades trying to get answers in this case, one that remains unsolved to this day, and he shares the bumpy road he's had to travel to get justice; one that often has left him at odds with the investigators working the case, in particular the FBI. We are also joined by DNA expert Suzanna Ryan who shares her insights and expertise regarding the clues and physical evidence left behind by the killer, or killers.

Episode 4 Catrina Mowrey
On June 25th, 1985 police in Dallas, Texas received a phone call from a concerned citizen who reported an abandoned car in an alley with a foul smell coming from it; a car that had been in the same spot for days. When police investigated and opened the trunk, they found a dead woman inside the trunk. She was nude and wrapped in a sheet. The victim was soon identified as 24 year-old Catherine Mowrey, who went by Catrina. Much of Catrina's life in Dallas was a msytery to her family back home in Kansas. When Catrina's body was found, she was supposed to be back in Kansas visiting her family. The car was traced to Catrina's boyfriend who claimed to have no knowledge or involvement in Catrina's death. According to him, Catrina had driven his car back to Kansas to see her family. Police theorized that Catrina had taken her own life. They then shifted to the theory that Catrina had died of a drug overdose, but when no drugs were found in Catrina's system, they one again changed direction dismissing the death as 'undetermined' and essentially that's where investigation into Catrina's death seemed to stall. Due to decomposition, the medical examiner left the official cause of death as 'undetermined'. For years, Catrina's family fought an uphill battle to find out the truth behind Catrina's death; a battle that they still are fighting today.
In this episode, we are joined by Catrina's niece, Catrina Marshall, as well as death investigator Landen Wilson, and Jared Bradley of MVAC DNA extraction services.

Episode 3 Dale Williams
42 Year-Old husband, and Father Dale Williams was a well-liked, and well-known around the town of Nucla, Colorado; a town of less than 1,000 people. Dale, the owner of a body shop, had the reputation as someone who would help anyone in need. After Dale and his wife helped a friend move away from her abusive husband, Dale found that his shop was broken into, and photos of Dale and this couple were found torn up on the floor next to some bullets. Dale's gun had also been stolen, and later turned up when it was placed in the drop slot at his wife's video store. Was this an ominous warning of some kind? On May 27, 1999 following this incident, Dale received a mysterious phone call at his shop from someone asking for help with car trouble they supposedly had. An ear witness caught part of the conversation, and got the impression the call came from a woman. Dale ventured out to help the person, and along the way stopped to talk to a friend of his. This friend got the impression that Dale was worried somehow about heading out to help the motorist in need, and sensed that he had really stopped by to see if her husband was around to perhaps go with him. Unfortuately, he wasn't and Dale drove off to help the motorist in trouble. It was the last time he was ever seen. Dale vanished along with his truck; a white 1994 Ford F250 pickup. When Dale's didn't come home, his wife knew something was wrong. A search for Dale and his truck came up empty. When Dale's wife put missing persons flyers up, she was shocked to find out someone was taking them down- someone they knew. It wasn't until weeks later that someone fishing at an area swimming hol,e known only to locals, discovered Dale's truck submerged in 13 feet of water. Police recovered it, but there was no sign of Dale. In the weeks, months, and years after the discovery of Dale's truck, his tools began to turn up on the side of the road not far from where his truck was found. Sadly, Dale never turned up, and was declared legally dead, suspected to be a victim of a homicide.
Over the years, rumors have swirled in the small town of Nucla about what happened to Dale Williams, but as of now, there is no clear answer.

Episode 2 Rachael Runyan
In this episode, the panel examines the heartbreaking August, 1982 abduction and murder of 3 year-old Rachael Runyan in Sunset, Utah. Rachael was playing at a park alongside her brothers, just feet away from her home. Their mom Elaine, watched from the window as she prepared a meal for the family. Although Elaine was nervous about letting the kids out to play, she wanted them to have fun, and they'd only be outside for a short while until it was time to come in. But in the blink of an eye, tragedy struck. A stranger approached the 3 young siblings and asked them if they wanted ice cream from Bobco's, a local store. Rachael's brother warned her not to follow the man, but she took a few steps toward him and within seconds, the man snatched Rachael up and was gone. Rachael's brothers raced inside to tell Elaine, and she called police who were at her home in less than 5 minutes. Police quickly took action and set up a county wide roadblock, but they did not find Rachael of her abductor. Police worked closely with Rachael's brother to gather details of what he witnessed, and despite his young age, he gave police a very detailed description of the man and his car. The suspect had dark skin and was possibly Black, or Hispanic. He was 5'8" to 6'0" tall, with a medium build, and a black mustache, and between twenty-five and thirty-five years old. His car was described as blue midsize car with wood grain stripes on the side- possibly a Ford Pinto Squire Station-Wagon, or similar vehicle.
Sunset Utah had a heavily Caucasian population, and despite the very distinct description of a suspect who was possibly Black or Hispanic, along with a very unique car, no suspect was identified.
Almost a month later, Rachael's naked body was found hog-tied in a creek off a dirt road in Morgan County, twenty miles from the park where she had been abducted. Due to decomposition, Rachael's cause of death was unclear, and it could not be determined if she was sexually assaulted. Rachael's case shocked the Sunset community, and they only became more troubled when it came to light that Rachael's murder may have been connected to the occult or a snuff film.
40 years later, there have been no arrests, and Rachael's case is still unsolved. Rachael's mom Elaine, as well as Private Cold Case Investigator Jason Jensen are guests in this episode. They discuss this tragic case in details from their perspective and share details of a promising suspect who they hope may be proven to be Rachael's killer.

Episode 1 Russell and Shirley Dermond
In the premiere episode of Citizen Detective, hosts Mike Morford, Naama Kates, and Dr. Lee Mellor explore the truly bizarre double murder of Russell and Shirley Dermond.
In May of 2014, 88 year old Russell Dermond, and his 87 year old wife Shirley Dermond, were enjoying retirement in their gated waterfront home in Great Waters Reynolds at Lake Oconee in Putnam County, Georgia. When they failed to arrive at a neighbor's Kentucky Derby party, the neighbor tried to get ahold of the Dermonds, but was unable to do so. Worried, the neighbor went over to the Dermond home on May 6, and after finding the Dermond home unlocked, they made their way inside. What they found shocked and horrified them. Inside the garage lay the decapitated body of Russell Dermond. His his head was missing, and so was Shirley. The news shocked local residents and the community at large, and police scrambled to figure out who had murdered Russell, and where was his wife Shirley. Over a week later, Shirley's body was found floating in Lake Oconee. The killer, or killers, had tried to weigh her body down in the lake with concrete blocks. With the recent arrest of a suspect, Coley McRaney in the murder case of Tracie Hawlett, and J.B. Beasley, to say that our season 1 coverage of this case was thrown a curve-ball would be an understatement. While we await the court process to play out with that suspect, we turn our attention in this episode to the original 'suspect' in this case, Johnny Barrentine. Johnny's story is so complex, we will need to tell it over 2 episodes. His arrest was accompanied by mis-information, incorrect details, and a questionable interview by police.
