Worksleeve started in 2018 as a weekly podcast to help engineering students get internships and entry level jobs. I was able to engage with students from all over the world and see my advice actually affect them in their career planning. I committed to this weekly podcast every single Wednesday for an entire year. In 2019, Worksleeve turned into a monthly podcast that focused on Asian American Studies, where I was able to meet so many individuals from across this country and hear their stories as Asian Americans. The podcast also took me to my first trip to New York City where I recorded a live interview at the Asian American Hotel Owners Association.

And for the past 50 days, I’ve been recording and publishing this podcast to document the events that occur in my life as well as some content reflecting my creative process in podcasting. Today, August 10th, 2020, this will be the second to last episode of Worksleeve.

If I was to write a book, Worksleeve will be a significant chapter… and like with all chapters, there must be an ending. As I prepare for the next chapter, I am now in a position in my life where I am embarking on a greater challenge of serving my community and making an Impact in South Dakota, which is my home. I am starting a business and am going back to school for my MBA.

There will be one final episode of Worksleeve that will be published at the end of August.

Thank you so much for listening to this podcast, and Id also like to take this moment and thank all the guests that have been on the show - its been truly a pleasure to speak with each and everyone of you. I’ve learned so many lessons in each conversation.

Franz Kafka, the Austrian philosopher and poet, once said, "You need not leave your room. Remain sitting at your table and listen. You need not even listen, simply wait. You need not even wait, just learn to become quiet, and still, and solitary. The world will freely offer itself to you to be unmasked. It has no choice; it will roll in ecstasy at your feet."

EP 30 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE.

There are a few essential components in each podcast episode.

First is compression. Audio Compression is the process of adjusting a signal’s dynamic range. Dynamic range is the difference between the loudest and quietest parts of an audio signal. When you watch a movie and a character is whispering or speaking softly, the audience (being you) is able to hear the quiet voices because the audio is compressed! Obviously in reality, you probably won’t be able to understand a single word the character is saying from a distance. This is how films immerse the audience into intimate scenes, as if you were sitting right next to the person that is speaking. Furthermore, if you were to listen to an audio signal of a voice that is screaming and whispering, by using compression, you are effectively reducing the loud parts of a signal (the screaming) and you are increasing the quiet parts of a signal (the whispering).

Next is a limiter. A limiter is similar to a compressor but the main differentiation between the two is that a limiter is generally done in the mastering phase of the production and is used to prevent an audio signal from exceeding a specified decibel, which prevents audio clipping. After the audio track is compressed and mixed, a limiter is used to amplify the overall volume of the track without degrading the dynamic range that was completed by the compressor.

EP 25 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE.

Listeners have been asking me about this new daily podcast, Get The Room Noise. Id like to take this moment and differentiate between this daily podcast and The Worksleeve Podcast program.

Right now, you are listening to Get The Room Noise. This is a daily podcast that serves two purposes: 1) the content in this program is designed to be under 5 minutes in duration for listeners who want quick content. 2) this podcast is about my creative process in podcasting. In addition, this program is to document the process of creating on a daily basis. Most episodes in this program is recorded and published on the same day.

The second program on this platform is called The Worksleeve Podcast which is a monthly podcast that interviews and shares stories from creatives of Vietnamese and Southeast Asian Diaspora. Generally, at the end of each month, The Worksleeve Podcast will publish a 30 - 60 minute episode that features a guest which highlights the stories that shaped them into the creatives that they are today. These episodes are promoted on the Worksleeve Instagram page. The last episode was number 62 featuring Creative Storytelling Coach, Haylee Thikeo. A new episode will be published at the end of this month, July 31st, 2020.

One last thing: every single episode that is published on Worksleeve will explicitly detail the name of the program in the show notes.

For any questions or comments, please send me a DM on Instagram @worksleeve.

EP 22 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE.

Months ago, I discovered an interview from Karrie Coughlin with Wilbur Sato. This interview was marked as Public Domain so I decided to experiment with sound design and modified the interview in small creative snippets of audio. I called this project, Bui Doi Journals.

Wilbur Sato spent his early childhood in San Pedro and Terminal Island. When ordered to leave Terminal Island, his family went to Boyle Heights before being sent to Manzanar. Just after arriving at Manzanar, Sato, a stamp collector who'd had to leave his albums behind, had a birthday. To celebrate, he recalled that: "œWell, my mother surprised me with a couple of stamps. I didn't know what to do with them. In the past, I would save stamps and I would admire them for their color and design and dream about the places where they came from all over the world. And you'd study places on the map and learn all the capitals and all that, but, gee, after that experience I just, I just couldn't do it anymore. Just because of that connection somehow." The family left Manzanar for Des Moines, Iowa. The transition was difficult; Sato recalled a fellow student punched him in the stomach. Shortly after that, the other students rallied around him. Sato and his family eventually returned to California. Of his Manzanar experiences, Sato said: "œThis alienation that you go through, that stays with you for the rest of your life. Even now you wonder, "Gee, am I a part of this? Are these really my friends?' You just wonder whether or not you're a part. But you just have to put that aside and assume that you are, and just participate."

EP 13 of the daily podcast, GET THE ROOM NOISE.

Last year, I wrote a song about my fears of working the corporate 9-5 and falling into a cyclical and mundane lifestyle of money and becoming too comfortable. The bridge of the song is sang in an apathetic tone and recites the words that my therapist told me before starting my new job in Denver.

My friend, Dyllan Harrington, helped me record, mix, and master this record and am I very pleased with the final product considering the time and energy that we put into the project in a cabin tucked away in the mountains. This was a new experience for me as I wrote the composition for each instrument and performed on the guitar, bass, vocals, and drums.

This record is inspired by the work of Matt Berninger, Black Francis, Alex Edkins, Steve Albini, Kurt Ballou, and the late Grant Simanton.

We released this EP under the Band name, Haunting Hands.

The law of conservation of energy states that the total energy of an isolated system is constant; energy can be transformed from one form to another, but can be neither created nor destroyed."

[Excerpt from the episode]: "It’s in the work right now but it’s something I want to talk about. I’m (Cham Phan) from Sioux falls and there’s a couple things that I want to plug. One is the One Sioux Falls Fund that helps everybody in Sioux Falls that needs help, assistance-wise. Coming up here, if you support the arts, arts is a huge thing for me and I’m working with the Sioux Falls Arts Council director right now to figure out how Kaizen could help their goal of creating a fund for artists. We’re trying to create a fund for artists right now and the wheel is moving. So hopefully by the time this is out, there will be an artists fund from the Sioux Falls Art Council for artists but in the meantime, you can visit the Sioux Falls Art Council website and they set it up so you can support these artists by directly buying stuff from them. That’s what I recommend because at the end of the day, I got into commercial work and making my way of life starting with art. It always will be art for me. So at the end of the day, I urge anyone that can if you're not being completely destroyed by this economically, please support artists. Solely based on the fact that we've been in this struggle before the virus. This is daily life for us. If you think this is hard now, imagine doing this daily with the goal of creating to make people happy. I feel like that’s what all artists are. They want to put their work out there and express things to build connections and have a shared human experience. That’s not always the most profitable way of life so if you can, please support your artists."

She fondly remembers serving as her mom’s “prep cook” on early weekend mornings preparing for large family gatherings by: wrapping hundreds of egg rolls, folding freshly steamed rice crepes, deveining countless shrimp, slicing meat for soups, washing herbs from the garden, and chopping veggies. She has carried these cooking skills with her into adulthood, and the distance and years since her upbringing in Little Saigon hasn’t diminished her appetite and enthusiasm for Vietnamese food. Kim’s goal for Miss B’s Vietnamese Food Truck is to share her life-long passion and love of good Vietnamese food with her community in Denver.

In this episode, I have the opportunity to interview one of my role models, Ngoc Thach. She is currently the Director of Public Relations in the hospitality industry and has a passion for journalism and public service. In our conversation, we speak on several topics including growing up Vietnamese in South Dakota, our names, our family relationships, and more.

One thing that I've learned from Ngoc is that many people may relate to my story regardless of their upbringing and heritage. With this new perspective, I've been rethinking about how I communicate with the people in my life and what are the intentional ways I can earn someone's trust. Up to this point in my life, I never considered "trust" as something that I've valued from others. However, Ngoc simply reminded me of that when you gain someone's trust, you have a feeling of acceptance...and acceptance has been something that I've always strived for.

Ngoc always wanted to be the pink Power Ranger and she is a badass. I'm so happy to call her family.

Getting a degree in engineering is not easy. Yes, there may be a general process on how to get a degree: go to class, get good grades, graduate, and get the job. In the United States, many students who are studying a degree at university will have to take one to two years of general courses to complete their degree. These general courses may include social sciences, humanities, english, and math. r/EngineeringStudents is a subreddit community on Reddit and it is a space for students who are interested in or are currently pursuing engineering to ask questions and get help on Resumes, career advice, and anything related to engineering. This online community is a great resource for students who are interested in STEM. I am frequently on this subreddit and decided to select three questions to answer that were posted in a recent forum.

These questions are submitted by students and involve: (1) is Mechanical Engineering a realistic degree?(2) what real world experience should I get in Electrical Engineering if I have zero internships? (3) which engineering major should I pursue?

As we welcome a new year, many people put together a list of new year resolutions. Although it is great to have goals, new year resolutions sometimes can be overwhelming - especially if you have a long list of unachievable goals.

For 2019, Id like to challenge students to set only one goal for their new year's resolution and that is to develop a routine. Specifically, treat your school schedule like a work schedule.

From my own personal experience, developing a routine was essential to graduating from engineering school. It wasn't until my senior year when I had a firm routine in play and I really wish I would've done it sooner.
