The Hebrews needed guidelines on fundamental, everyday issues of diet and nutrition, hygiene and diseases, agriculture and animals, sex and other aspects of moral behavior. Maybe most of all they needed worship rituals that would keep them attentive to God’s preservation and forgiveness in their everyday lives, a sacrificial system that would replace the abhorrent child-burning sacrifices to the god Molech.”
