Concluding our summer series "One Three Nine," Pastor Jim Ellis tackles the final, challenging section of Psalm 139:19โ24. While this Psalm is easy to love in its earlier verses, it takes a difficult turn as David uses strong language regarding his enemies and expressions of hate. Jim unpacks how these verses are descriptive of David's raw human emotions, rather than prescriptive for how we should live. Ultimately, Davidโs example teaches us to bring our most intense feelings honestly before God, exposing our hearts so we can release them to Him. Grounded in the truth that every single person either is or was an enemy of God, this final message invites us to submit to the One who was slain for us, crying out: "Search me, know my heart, and lead me in the way everlasting."

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," former BCC pastor Maury Millican returns to the pulpit to unpack the beautiful truth found in Psalm 139:17โ18. While we cannot fully comprehend the vastness of all of God's thoughts, Maury reminds us that through the Holy Spirit, we can know the most important one: God loves you unconditionally, completely detached from your performance. Exploring passages from 1 Corinthians and Romans, this message challenges us to untangle our minds from the performance-driven metrics of the world and anchor our identity in the lifelong process of being transformed by the renewing mind of Christ.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Walter Fisher unpacks the breathtaking truths found in Psalm 139:15โ16. Pulling back the curtain on how we are formed, Walter reminds us that we are not random accidents; we are God's unique handiworkโmeticulously embroidered in secret and given a distinct identity to make an eternal impact. Because God intimately designed your frame and intentionally purposed every single one of your days before you drew your first breath, He wants to strategically deploy your unique desires and gifts to advance His Kingdom right where you are planted.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Hannah Venable dives into Psalm 139:13โ14 to unpack the deep intentionality behind how God created us. Hannah explores the Hebrew imagery of being "knitted together," reminding us that our design wasn't an instant zap, but a careful process that gives every human being ultimate dignity, value, and worth. Made in the image of God and designed to be temples of the Holy Spirit, looking inward at how we are made ultimately pushes us outward in wonder and praise toward our Creator.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Dennis Sailer dives into Psalm 139:11โ12 to explore how we navigate the difficult, dark seasons of life. Dennis reminds us of the profound truth that to God, the darkness shines as bright as the day. When we feel overwhelmed by difficult circumstances, Godโs omnipresence breaks through to deliver us from the domain of darkness. By anchoring ourselves in His purity, truth, and divine presence, we discover that living in His light can actually bring us closer to Him than ever before.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Mark Krenz walks us through Psalm 139:9โ10 to tackle a question we all face at some point: Is God truly present, or is He distant during our hardest moments? Looking at the imagery of "deep waters," Mark reminds us that God actively pursues an intimate, personal relationship with each of us. No matter how deep or difficult the season you are walking through right now, you cannot outrun His reach. Even in the deepest waters, God promises to hold you fast, guide you, and be right there with you.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Marcus Staley dives into Psalm 139:6โ8 to remind us of the powerful promise that God's Spirit is always with us. When life feels too overwhelming or great to understand, Marcus uses the illustration of pointillism art to show how we often get stuck zooming in on a single, difficult moment while God is painting a beautiful, larger masterpiece. Even when we experience seasons of lament or try to run away like Jonah, we cannot escape His presence, His mercy, and His grand design for our lives.

Continuing our summer series "One Three Nine," guest speaker Randy Palmer explores Psalm 139:4โ5 and what it means to be securely "hemmed in" by God. Looking at Luke 17:21, Randy challenges us to see that God's kingdom isn't found in worldly institutions or power, but is actively dwelling within us and moving in our midst through the Holy Spirit. Even in a broken world, we are invited to stop looking through a dim glass and instead recognize how God's Spirit is speaking to us and working through His church today.

Pastor Jim Ellis kicks off our summer series on Psalm 139 by focusing on verses 1โ3 and the foundational truth that God intimately knows everything about us. While we often hide behind facades out of fear or shame, this passage reminds us that the Lord sees to our very core and loves us still. Our deepest longing is to be fully known and fully loved, and true transformation begins when we stop hiding and step into relationship with the God who refuses to reject us.

Guest speaker Pastor Jared Lee returns to BCC to explore Davidโs cry for help in Psalm 40:1โ12, reminding us that spiritual growth rarely happens in a straight line. When we find ourselves stuck in the messy, overwhelming middle of life, true growth begins when we stop striving in our own strength and start waiting on God to rescue us. Even when the journey feels unsteady, we can trust that Jesus walks the line with us, exposing our need for His mercy and transforming our hunger for Him.

In the finale of our "Plant a Garden" series, Pastor Jim Ellis looks at John 15:15โ17 and the ultimate goal of the Gardener: a harvest of fruit born out of true friendship with God. We explore how cultivating an experience-based friendship (philos) with Jesus is the very vehicle He uses to transform our hearts. As the series concludes, we are challenged to examine what keeps us from spending the time necessary to abide in the Vine and enjoy this deep connection.

Pastor Jim Ellis turns to John 15:12โ14 to explore how Jesus prunes our lives so that we can truly fulfill His commandment to love one another. While pruning can be painful, it is the process God uses to shape a community defined by sacrificial, life-laying-down love. Moving from abiding to action, we are invited to actively co-labor with God in the world.

In this message from John 15:10โ11, Pastor Jim Ellis explores how Jesus patiently walks with us as we growโeven when our roots feel exposed by life's challenges. Pastor Jim Ellis continues our "Plant a Garden" series by looking at John 15:8โ9 and the "hidden" work of spiritual growth. Just as phosphorus strengthens a tree's roots, Jesus feeds and strengthens us as we abide in Him, allowing us to bear the fruit of the Spirit and bring glory to the Father.

In this installment of "Plant a Garden," Pastor Jim Ellis explores the "if" statements of John 15:6โ7 and what it truly means to be united with Christ. We look at how Jesus "waters" our lives through His Word and prayer, inviting us to be vulnerable in our requests not to change Godโs mind, but to deepen our trust in Him as co-laborers in His kingdom.

Pastor Jim Ellis continues our Colossians series by exploring what it truly means to "walk in Him" (Col. 2:6). We discover that because God is the initiator of our salvation, we no longer have to strive in our own strength; when we walk with Christ alone, we truly flourish.

This week, Pastor Jim Ellis continues our "Journey Through Scripture" series with a study of Colossians 1:15-20. In a world where many are pressured to turn away from the Gospel, Paulโs message remains clear: it is all about Jesus. He is not merely a man or a prophet; He is God the Creator. The Main Point: Jesus is the Creator of all things and the one who holds all things together. But what is He creating now? Jesus is building a Kingdom movement where hearts are changed from the inside out by agape love that lays its life down for others. Today, He invites us to be part of that story. #BCC #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #Unity #BibleStudy #ChristianLiving #JimEllis #BiblicalTruth #BCCBismarck #GodsStory #JesusIsCreator #Colossians #Discipleship

This week, in our "Journey Through Scripture" series, Pastor Jim Ellis examined the command in 1 Corinthians 11:1: "Imitate me, as I imitate Christ." This was presented as a direct calling for every believer to become a living, imitatable example of the Jesus we follow. Pastor Jim challenged us with essential questions: Is your life accessible and worthy of emulation? And what happens to the next generation if we don't intentionally disciple them? Listen to discover how to model Christ's love and influence those who are learning from you. #BCC #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #Unity #BibleStudy #ChristianLiving #JimEllis #BiblicalTruth #BCCBismarck #ImitateChrist #LiveALifeWorthImitating #Discipleship #NextGeneration #ImitatableExample #WalkTheTalk

This week in our "Journey Through Scripture" sermon series, Pastor Jim Ellis delivered a message based on Luke 8. The sermon focused on some of the miracles of Jesus: subduing a storm, bringing freedom to a man bound by demons, granting healing to a suffering woman, and resurrecting a deceased girl. Pastor Jim pressed us to look inward, asking for our personal response to Christ. The ultimate call was one of action: once we've had our own personal encounter, we are commissioned to proclaim to all those around us the incredible testimony of what Jesus has done. #BCC #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #Unity #BibleStudy #ChristianLiving #JimEllis #BiblicalTruth #BCCBismarck #Luke8 #MiraclesOfJesus #PersonalEncounter #GoAndProclaim #TellYourStory

Pastor Jim Ellis kept our "Journey Through Scripture" series moving this week with a personal message on forgiveness. He looked at the parable of the servant who was forgiven an astronomical debt but then refused to show mercy for a tiny one. Jim reminded us that forgiveness is ultimately a decision that starts in the heart, even when our emotions feel complicated. It's also vital to remember that forgiving is not the same as automatically "forgetting" the pain. The core challenge Jim left us with is to find a personal process or tool that allows us to do the difficult but worthwhile work of truly letting go. Through Christ's example, weโre invited to step into this new, lighter way of living. #Bismarck #church #BismarckCommunityChurch #BCC #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #Unity #BibleStudy #ChristianLiving #JimEllis #BiblicalTruth #BCCBismarck #forgiveness #ForgiveFromTheHeart #TheDecisionToForgive #LiveForgiven #NewWayOfLiving #WorthTheWork #BiblicalForgiveness #ParableOfTheUnforgivingServant #GospelLife

In this message, Pastor Jim Ellis continued our "Journey Through Scripture" series by examining several key passages (including Mark 8:23-9:8) that confirm the complete authority of Jesus. Jim explored the connection between the words "Author" and "Authority," noting that as the Creator of all things, God possesses all authority, which He has entrusted to Jesus. This foundation set the stage for the week's central challenge: If Jesus holds absolute authority all things, what does that demand of our allegiance and our lives? #Bismarck #church #BismarckCommunityChurch #BCC #Gospel #JourneyThroughScripture #ReadBible #Unity #BibleStudy #ChristianLiving #Sermon #JimEllis #BCCJourney #SermonSeries #BiblicalTruth #BCCBismarck #AuthorityOfJesus #ChristTheAuthor #authority #AuthorHasAuthority #JesusIsLord #CreatorGod

Hans Urs Von Balthasar: Seeing the Form
Beauty is the word which shall be our first. Beauty is the last thing which the thinking intellect dares to approach since only it dances as an uncontained splendor around the double constellation of the true and the good and their inseparable relation to one another. Beauty is the disinterested one, without which the ancient world refused to understand itself, a word which both imperceptibly and unmistakably has bid farewell to our new world, a world of interests, leaving it to its own avarice and sadness. No longer loved or fostered by religion, beauty is lifted from its face as a mask, and its absence exposes features on that face which threaten to become incomprehensible to man. We no longer dare to believe in beauty, and we make of it a mere appearance in order the more easily to dispose of it.
Our situation today shows that beauty demands for itself at least as much courage and decision as do truth and goodness, and she will not allow herself to be separated and banned from her two sisters without taking them along with herself in an act of mysterious vengeance. We can be sure that whoever sneers at her name as if she were the ornament of a bourgeois past โ whether he admits it or not โ can no longer pray and soon will no longer be able to love.
