In this episode of Teleios Talk, we are looking at Psalm 65 through the lens of grief, loss, and worship. We begin with the heartbreaking story of King David mourning the death of his son Absalom, crying out in anguish, “My son, my son! If only I had died instead of you!” Yet remarkably, from this season of sorrow came a psalm not of lament, but of praise.

How do we praise God in the midst of grief? Psalm 65 offers a powerful answer. Together, we explore three movements in David’s prayer: praise for God’s forgiveness, praise for His power and provision, and praise for His abundant blessing. Along the way, we consider what it means to grieve honestly, to recognize God’s goodness, and to live out praise in action.

From David’s broken heart to Horatio Spafford’s hymn “It Is Well with My Soul,” this episode reminds us that sorrow and faith can meet, and that the goodness of God is deeper than our deepest grief.

Who are you to judge me? Only God can judge me!

When Jesus told His followers "Do not judge." in Matthew 7:1 was he telling us that any moral statements on our part would be a sin? As a cultural shorthand to self-ingratiation is the command not to judge an open door to every moral failing in the name of love?

I'm pretty sure we've lost the plot on this one. Even as far back as Tertullian and the early church fathers, this command by Jesus has created controversies. But the command is clear. So why all the fuss?

I am told over and over that the Bible contains errors and contradictions that make it hard to believe. I am told that the God of Christianity is a tyrant; maniacal and vindictive; looking to decimate whole civilizations at His whim. But I don't read about a God like that in Scriptures, and I don't see the errors and contradictions that seem to be rampant on every page. Why is that? Am I just willfully blind and deceived? There is a lot to be said about what we find in the Biblical text and often we find things we aren't looking for.

We see the analogy of the Good Shepherd in both the Old ad New Testament. Certainly, I expect most people can recite Psalm 23 from memory; yet, when Jesus referred to Himself as the Good Shepherd how did His analogy change our understanding of the words of David?

In the 18th century the divide between Christianity and Science was cemented in culture to the point that our schools now teach our children the religion is only for the weak. But wasn't science a product of theological investigation? This is such a divisive topic that there are those in our churches who are leaving because they cannot reconcile the debate.

The Doctrine of General Revelation tells us that no one has an excuse for knowing about God. Has our church invited an unholy alliance within its people? Today there are many things that have been grafted into our common worship; be that on Sunday morning or in our daily lives. But do some of the new ideas and practices carry with them a spirit of the occult? We often laugh at the simple sinful Hebrews in the Old Testament who just couldn't get it right and fell back into the pagan practices of their forefathers. But, is their story our story? So, your pastor has just been let go. Why did it happen? Is there a culture of dismissal in our churches? Today's pastor is too often treated like an expendable member, held to expectations which would be seen as abusive in any other profession. What is the expectation of the pastor and what is the expectation of each church member? Should we as a church address how pastors are treated in a new way?

Based and my personal experiences, that of friends and family who have been pastors, and discussions going back to 2003. The intention here is to be blunt and honest about what happens behind closed doors. If what you hear hits close to home, know that you are not alone. The themes discussed in this podcast are not unique and nearly always ignored. If we as Christians are to become mature in our faith then topics like this need to be discussed.

As Christians we are called to prayer. If prayer is our personal communication with God, then why do struggle to do it? Maybe an unanswered prayer has left you asking, "Why pray at all?" Jesus taught His disciples to pray, and if, as Christians, we have been shown how to pray then perhaps practice makes perfect.

There are many different ways we describe grace: sacramental, unconditional, and prevenient. But what is meant when we discuss grace? The doctrine of grace is one which we learn about early on in the Old Testament. Let's talk about what grace means to us.

Blessings come when we are obedient. In the story of David and Goliath the obedience of David meant that he did what God wanted. He did not heed the words of his brothers or even the king. In out lives, who do we listen to? How do we go about defeating giants?

What does it mean to attend a church? Do you go to a place of worship with others or do you choose to skip the "organized" church to worship on your own? And what about church discipline? Should the church be allowed to say who is in and who is out? In this episode we will talk about all these topics and more.
