This is one of the most exciting running of The Travers Stakes in a while. That is saying a lot considering the history of the race. We have the Kentucky Derby winner, The Preakness winner, The Belmont Stakes winner and an exciting group of prospects joining them in what likely determines who is the three-year-old champion and possibly the favorite for The Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Rosario Montanez is not only one of the toughest jockeys you will ever meet, he is one of the toughest people you'll ever meet. Welcome to another great episode of Past the Wire TV and our phenomenal One on One Rogue's Gallery series.
If you want to talk fearless and jockey injuries this is an episode you do not want to miss. Faith, determination and believing in himself carried Rosario Montanez through what most of us would not make it through, not once but twice.
This is a rider who did not let having his face practically ripped off, his eye taken out, being in a coma, breaking his back or his neck stop him. There is obviously no quit in Rosario Montanez. Rosario had the bug with Irad Ortiz and fate brought their careers in very different directions. Montanez suffered a bad fall and horrific injury at Saratoga and was away from riding a long time. After paying his dues and then some he won by open lengths on his first mount back for Steve Asmussen. Fate was not done with Rosario by any means however.
You'll have to hear this inspiring story for yourself. Definitely hit the like button and show some love to this jockey. Leave a note of support or encouragement as well. We will all appreciate it and so will he.

As promised we have finally done “The Bounce” show with Jeff Franklin of Thorograph. Jeff has quite a history in the game as you’ll learn on the show. An ADW pioneer and the Jockey Agent for Gary Stevens when he won The Kentucky Derby aboard Winning Colors.
The bounce as us sheet users call it is a real thing. It is often misunderstood, misinterpreted, and ignored. When understood and used properly it is a significant EDGE as will be explained on the show. Of course there is more like tidbits from the late greats Bobby Frankel and Charlie Whittingham, two of the best ever, coming from two of the current best bettors, Jonathan Stettin and Jeff Franklin.
This episode is a phenomenal introduction to Thorograph or a better understanding of Thorograph for more advanced users and players. If you are a beginner or a pro this show is for you. Up and coming trainer Keri Brion joins us in the rogues’ gallery for a One on One with Jonathan Stettin.
Keri liked her long shot first time starter, and she might just like another one coming up soon! You’ll have to watch! It’s worth it.
Keri has had quite the career already and learned her craft from one of the best, Jonathan Shepherd who knew how to win at Saratoga. Learn how Keri got into the game, won steeplechase races in Ireland, trained an Eclipse Award winner, The Mean Queen (we love the name) and her goals for the future. Keri is also only second trainer to win over one million dollars in a season on the National Steeplechase Association circuit.
Now for the controversy. As we all know Saratoga has been plagued with inquiries resulting in what most feel are inconsistent ruling, with no transparency or explanations. Keri was in the middle of one of these controversies and she talks with Jon quite frankly about what it is like from a trainers perspective. Do the stewards communicate with the trainer? Is the decision explained? How does it affect the horses next start?

Professional Handicapper and successful horseplayer Jonathan Stettin talks about the Thorograph patterns on all The Kentucky Derby horses this year.
The Pick 6 King goes over what he looks for in the Thorograph numbers. He talks about the patterns on all the horses and who looks like they will go forward, who looks like they will regress or bounce, who is the fastest and who looks too slow.

We have all heard the saying "Pace Makes The Race" and it is definitely true. Pace has a significant impact on the outcome of many races daily. Turf, dirt, long, short, pace comes into play. Is it the only factor and end all be all? Of course not, but knowing who will be running where and how fast, and who will and who won't be running fast enough to win at the end of a race is critical to have a chance at long term success.
On this Past the Wire TV video Jonathan Stettin talks about how he deciphers pace, why pace figures and projectors and even computers can't beat the human mind in this area. In this year's Kentucky Derby we saw just how much pace can affect the outcome of a race when Rich Strike benefited from the perfect pace and trip for him to beat horses he would not beat in different pace scenarios. That was an extreme example but lesser examples happen daily and often at big prices.

Mike Smith has one of the best resumes of any jockey in the history of Thoroughbred Horse Racing, the Sport of Kings! He is a Hall of Fame, Triple Crown winning jockey who has ridden some of the best horses in the world. Mike has also won more Breeders’ Cup races than any other rider in history and he is not finished yet.
Mike rides Taiba in the Kentucky Derby this year. Taiba is owned by Amr Zedan who also owned Medina Spirit. Should Taiba win the Run for the Roses on the First Saturday in May, Mike Smith will become the oldest jockey to win the Kentucky Derby. It will be his third win in the most exciting two minutes in sports horserace.
His first was aboard Giacomo, one of the biggest long-shots to win the race. His next was on Justify who went on to win The Triple Crown. It was Justify who ended that whole Apollo thing about no horse winning the Kentucky Derby without racing at two since, well Apollo of course who won in 1882. Taiba not only did not race at two, but he has only two starts. Interestingly enough Leonatus won The Kentucky Derby in 1883, the year after Apollo, and Leonatus had just two starts.
If Mike Smith and Taiba cross the wire first it will truly be historic, but will give Mike some asterisks that will never be repeated or equaled. It is quite the story.
Mike sat down for some One on One Q and A with Jonathan Stettin to talk a little Derby and Taiba.
Do you have to be first or second turning for home in The Kentucky Derby to win since they changed to the points system? A lot of handicappers, especially statistics gurus, seem to think so.
The Kentucky Derby changed from an earnings based system to a points based system for the 2013 running of The Run For The Roses. This kept some sprinters with high enough earnings to race in The Derby from competing in the race. It also kept the fillies out unless they race colts and earn enough points prior to the First Saturday in May.
There is no question, the charts certainly tell us we have had our share of winners who were one, two, turning for home. Can you still win from far off the pace? Is there another reason for the results we've seen besides the point system change?
Long time pro Jonathan Stettin weighs in with his thoughts on the subject. You'll also hear our co host Michael Vale weigh in. On this episode of Past the Wire's podcast, Gate to Wire, our hosts Michael Vale and Jonathan Stettin take a look at a few different topics.
They discuss why and how the sad passing of Midnight Bourbon occurred in his stall at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning, but was not reported until Wednesday by the Daily Racing Form.
Apparently Midnight Bourbon fell ill from some sort of gastrointestinal issue following a five furlong workout. The colt reportedly declined rapidly and succumbed to the illness later in the morning. It is a sad and tragic loss. Midnight Bourbon was one of the top stakes horses in the country and had most recently raced in both The Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia and the Dubai World Cup in Dubai. Not many horses compete in both those races and most horses who ship there to run get a break when they return to the states. Midnight Bourbon had only been back a few weeks and was already working seemingly with no break. Additionally the horse was stabled with his trainer, Steve Asmussen at Churchill Downs. Asmussen also trains early Kentucky Derby favorite Epicenter and the Derby is just over two weeks away. That makes the fact this went unreported for three or four days even stranger.
On a slight stray from the course Mike and Jon take a little look at the Mike Tyson plane incident. We think you'll appreciate their takes.
We also take a look at the return of champions Malathaat and Letruska on Friday at Keeneland and Saturday at Oaklawn. Mike and Jon both like a horse in the Apple Blossom, and it is not the heavy favorite and tough to beat champ Letruska.

The Twitter account @HorseRace2Day Horse Racing Today posed some interesting questions on the social media platform this week. They asked what are the most underrated and overrated handicapping angles out there. The responses were interesting and we all can learn from each other and who knows where the next edge or score can come from?
Two topics that got a lot of attention were weight and the gallop out. Frankly we were surprised at the amount of handicappers who place little or no importance on these two aspects of the game.
We discuss the importance of each and what might be gained by paying attention to them. We may not sway you but Michael Vale grills Pick 6 King Jonathan Stettin on what he looks for in a gallop out and why weight matters, a lot.

Chantal Sutherland recently was on the receiving end of a backlash of criticism on horse racing social media for two separate incidents. The first involved a horse she rode named Barbara who decided to bear out turning for home leaving Chantal with nothing to say or do about it. The second incident was the result of a comment Chantal Sutherland made on a racing podcast where she talked about giving Tyler Gaffalione room to get out when his mount was loaded and hers was finished.
Instead of discussing the two incidents here we'll let Chantal and the show do the talking. We will say the backlash directed at her was hard, and we think she was most courteous to come on Past the Wire TV along with our Gate to Wire podcast and set the record straight. Jonathan Stettin will offer his perspective as a long time professional player and handicapper and Jeff Metz will offer his as a trainer and horseman.

BARBARA set the pace for six furlongs in the two-path, bore out badly carrying out MIA CAMILA coming off the far turn, and ran on near the outside rail to hold the show spot. MIA CAMILA got bumped by SCHOOL DANCE at the start, raced four wide to the far turn, got carried out to near the outside rail by BARBARA at the top of the stretch, and was cautiously handled near that rival after straightening away.
FOLLOWING A STEWARDS INQUIRY, BARBARA WAS DISQUALIFIED FROM THIRD POSITION AND PLACED FOURTH BEHIND MIA CAMILA FOR INTERFERENCE LEAVING THE FAR TURN AND INTO THE STRETCH.
Fresh off his first graded stakes win with Clear Vision in the Grade 3 Tropical Turf at Gulfstream Park, up and coming young trainer Matthew O' Connor sits down with Jonathan Stettin on Past the Wire TV and our Gate to Wire podcast.
Not only did this sharp, young, and dedicated trainer get his first graded stakes win, he did it with a horse he claimed just two starts back for $25,000. Matthew ran Clear Vision off the claim in the Claiming Crown Emerald, and the six year old Artie Schiller gelding ran a good second. Matthew stayed aggressive with the new acquisition, and ran back in the Tropical Turf and got a graded stakes win for himself and his owners, MEB Stables LLC.
Jon and Matt talk about Matt's career, what he saw in Clear Vision, his philosophies on training and the concerns we all share about the current state of our sport as well as its future. Matthew brings a lot of enthusiasm and hope to the table which is something the sport needs. he also brings a pretty solid background and has worked his way up the ladder from hot-walking to ultimately training. Matthew is not only active claiming, he is at the sales and scouting and making purchases. Matthew has worked for Dominick Schettino, Robert Falcone, and Hall of Famer and two time (should have been three) Kentucky Derby winner Nick Zito.
We think you will enjoy meeting Matthew O' Connor and it is probably a good idea to put him on the radar screen. He can have a very bright and positive future in horse racing!
Not voting for Bob Baffert trained horses legit or not?
Is the effort to ban trainer Bob Baffert from the Kentucky Derby legit and in the best interests of racing, or is it another targeted scapegoat scenario?
Attorney Bill Gotimer joins Jonathan Stettin on Past the Wire TV to explore these possibilities along with the legitimacy or lack thereof in excluding horses like Corniche from an Eclipse Award vote.
Complicated issues with both legal and moral implications.
Suffice to say Jon and Bill do not agree on everything, but they, as many can't nowadays remain civil and cordial despite differing views.
Bill provides more of a legal perspective while Jon is a little more from the shall we say street school of thought. However you feel this is an interesting conversation between two passionate and experienced individuals in the Sport of Kings.

There are three important elements that require some level of expertise to "beat the game" and wind up one of the few who can show a profit and even the smaller percentage of professional players that can actually make a living playing horses. Yes, it can be done but it takes work and dedication.

Make no mistake, the Humane Society of the United States is not PETA, nor do they share the same philosophy or goal for the sport of horse racing. To the contrary, they are a largely unknown by fans and bettors, ally to racing, and actually support safe racing.
The Humane Society of the US worked with the Jockey Club and Congress to get the Horse racing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) passed.

Valerie is a horse person herself, and is also a supporter of racing, as long as it is done as safely as possible for both the equine and human athletes. Her views of that are not unrealistic, nor are her expectations. Valerie was involved in pushing HISA into law, and was a welcomed help to the Jockey Club and other industry leaders who want what most of us do, safe, drug free, uniform racing with a level playing field and clearly defined rules by a central governing body.
In this episode you will see how the Humane Society views our sport, and how they want to both see and help it grow. They are more involved than many realize in trying to make the reforms and changes most of us know are needed actually happen.
Contrary to what some may think, this organization is a help to our industry, not an enemy of it. Unlike other organizations, they understand the sport, and want the best for it while also wanting the best for the horses. That was refreshing to learn.

Dean Reeves loves thoroughbred horse racing. It is apparent as soon as you meet him and start talking horses. We are pleased to feature Dean talking with Jonathan Stettin on this episode of Past the Wire TV.Dean has had tremendous success in the game.
He campaigned Mucho Macho Man to run in the Kentucky Derby and win the Breeders' Cup Classic. He also has an Eclipse Award for Channel Maker on his mantle so he knows a thing or two about playing this game at the highest level.
Dean's passion for the horse and sport is part of why he is willing to deep dive and tackle some of the issues plaguing the game today. He is eager for things to improve and offers ideas and hope on how to make that happen. You won't find many if any more passionate people about the sport we love and the two discuss how the owners and bettors are the ones putting in the money, and at times it seems as if they have the least say.
Dean describes the unique way he got into the game, his philosophy on running his stable, and his thoughts on keeping the playing field level for all.Of course Jon brings up a horse Dean owns he has his eye on, and that part of the show is definitely paying close attention to as is when they talk about some of Dean's horses to watch.
Mucho Macho Man is one heck of a story and is part of two great comebacks, Kathy Ritvo and Gary Stevens. Tax who Dean is also partners on is on the comeback trail. Channel Maker has taken them around the world. This man is obviously doing things the right way is and surrounded by a lot of talented people.

To date three lawsuits have been filed against trainer Bob Baffert whose Medina Spirit won the Kentucky Derby, then tested positive for betamethasone. All three lawsuits were filed by bettors who lost their wagers, and one of the suits also names Churchill Downs as a defendant.
To date, Medina Spirit remains the Kentucky Derby winner pending the results of a split sample test. Both Churchill Downs and NYRA took action against Bob Baffert prior to completion of the split sample test, and as of now the sample has not yet been sent out. Both Churchill Downs and NYRA banned Bob Baffert from entering or running any horses at their racetracks. The CHRB, which governs California racing issued a statement they would not take action until the process played out and a ruling was issued. The rules in Kentucky give a trainer three days to request a split sample, but only state the sample has to be sent out following the request "as expeditiously as possible."
Bill Gotimer opines on the merits of the lawsuits, which all contain RICO allegations. Bill also provides his thoughts on how he would have proceeded, the likely defenses, and what we may see play out.
Bill and Jonathan Stettin discuss the facts surrounding the cases, some of the things we know, and some of the things we don't know just yet.
This is both an interesting and important show not just for bettors, but for anyone with a stake in the game. It is always insightful to hear from an attorney not directly involved, and also a bettor like Jonathan Stettin who obviously would follow a case like this. Bill Gotimer has been active in the legal community for a long time and is familiar with racetracks, racing, and has represented people involved in the sport in the past.
Jose Santos grew up loving horse racing and was also the son of a champion jockey and one of the best around. Jose Santos ruled the roost for many years on the New York and Florida circuits while winning a Kentucky Derby and his share of Breeders' Cup races along the way. The Belmont Stakes, The Breeders' Cup Classic, name it and there is a good chance Jose won it. His son, also named Jose but often called Joe affectionately to differentiate the two, wanted to follow in his father's footsteps and be a rider. His height, size and weight said no, you'll have to find another way.
Joe thought he would be a trainer but eventually realized being a jockey's agent was more to his liking and he has become a very respected agent in this highly competitive field.
Joe sat down with Past the Wire's Jonathan Stettin and Michael Vale to discuss his career, how he got to where he is, and what his unique vision is for jockey agents in the future. The show is available both on our Past the Wire TV YouTube channel and our Gate to Wire podcast!

Rosario became available after trainer Bob Baffert decided not to run Concert Tour who Rosario was scheduled to ride. Jockeys in the United States for the most part ride without contracts. It is usually a handshake type of thing which depending on which side of the fence you sit, can mean it is a strong commitment or no commitment at all. The conversation gets interesting and offers differing perspectives on business decisions and loyalty.
We did invite John Sadler onto the show. He never answered us. We also invited owner Kosta Hronis who did answer and say while he enjoys the show, it was John’s decision and he did not want to discuss someone else’s decision. He also offered that through the years of having horses with John he has never provided any input on riders.

On the heels of trainer Joe Orseno's comments about Lasix following Imprimis bleeding at Keeneland, and Hidden Scroll bleeding following a race on the same card the panel sat down to discuss Lasix. Sure we know the topic has been debated many times in the past, but now a federal law exists that will ultimately ban the drug from race day use in the United States, or at least in the states which opt in to the Horse Racing safety and Integrity Act. There is so much to work out and the panel starts by exploring what has changed in racing creating an environment where over 90% of our horses race with the drug, and how much it helps as opposed to whether it hurts the horses both short and long term.
As with many aspects of the Sport of Kings, Thoroughbred Horse Racing one issue ties into another which ties into another and it almost seems endless. This is a video and podcast you won't want to miss as the panel brings so much to the table and hits on so many topics and issues hindering the success and growth let alone the survival of the sport we love.
With a panel like this you can expect solutions offered with their opinions. This is an outspoken and passionate bunch who may differ in thoughts and views but share a commonality in their love for the horse and the animals well being put first before the business of racing and breeding.
Lasix as a mask for other substances is debunked but the use of other substances is explored along with policies of racetrack management and state governing bodies on doing what is necessary to create a level playing field for healthy and sound horses. If you care about the horses and the sport this is a show you will wamt to check out.
What would racing be without the bettor? Nothing, the bettor is the customer with no voice in the game, well not one that anyone hears or listens to anyway. Our panel tackles that issue as well realizing the bettor is an integral and vital piece of the equation. This reminds us of Jonathan Stettin's Who Yields the Power article and it is always the one with the checkbook or money.

Nicholas Vaccarezza is the perfect example of what the future of horse racing should be. He has passion for the sport with his love of the animal itself always coming first. He has carved out a path and road for himself he hopes will take him to the top of the world in the Sport of Kings and from what we see he is doing it the right way and is the type of man the game needs. He is paying his dues, and learning all the facets.
Nicholas comes from a racing family, but it was not always that way. His father, Carlo Vaccarezza is probably best known for multiple graded stakes winner Little Mike who currently resides at Old Friends Farm in Lexington where Nick and Carlo visit him. Carlo was able to transition himself from a fan and gambling man while an extremely successful restauranteur in New York City into an owner, buyer, breeder, and ultimately a trainer. It is not easy to break into the Sport of Kings coming from a restaurant and gambling background but Carlo did it.
Nick is outspoken about his views on key issues in the sport, and also what he thinks are viable solutions. We think you will enjoy meeting and getting to know this young man who sets a good example of desire and work ethic getting you where you want to go. As gamblers ourselves our bet is Nicholas Vaccarezza has a bright future in horse racing and that is good for all of us who love this sport.

Gulfstream Park track announcer Pete Aiello was kind enough on busy Florida Derby week to join the Past the Wire clan on their podcast Gate to Wire brought to you by Spendthrift Farm.
Sure they talked the Florida Derby and who Pete, Jon, and Michael vale all liked and disliked. Things got fun however when Pete handicapped the Pick 6 King himself pegging Jon's single in the mandatory rainbow pick 6 payout. If that wasn't bad enough, Jon is planning on singling a horse who was beat more than 20 lengths in her last start and that is not something you see every day.
Pete has a pretty good speed play opinion on the big race which closes out the mandatory payout rainbow 6. Jon has his single in the sequence and a horse he has been following into the Florida Derby. Vale comes in with his thoughts on the race also.
It is impossible not to have a great show with Pete at the table. In addition to the Pete handicapping the Pick 6 King himself the two also reminisce about the one ride the great Frankie Dettori would probably like to have back. Joel Rosario, known for his strong finishes, is one of the best riders in the world. He has won the Kentucky Derby, Dubai World Cup, Breeders' Cup Classic, the Belmont Stakes, and multiple other Breeders' Cup races and graded stakes. Before coming to the United States Joel even won the Dominican Triple Crown. You can add two wins and counting at Royal Ascot. There is little question Joel's resume is already one of the best, and he will only keep padding it.

Some players like to use the all button. Pick 6 King Jonathan Stettin is not one of them. He hardly ever uses the all button. Co host Michael vale agrees with him. They are probably in the minority of today's horseplayers. It seems with an emphasis on larger tickets in smaller denominations most players favor the all button when fishing for those big long-shots.
