We met around Oscar Tuazon’s Fire Worship to rekindle memories of the Aspen Art Museum from the last forty years. This marathon-style session will draw on voices that are to be featured in a new publication by the AAM, including individuals who participated in StoryCorps recordings in 2018. This warm gathering will collectively trace the oral history of the museum through two-minute anecdotes.
In 2017 and 2018, as a part of a whistleblowing effort, James Lindsay, Peter Boghossian, and Helen Pluckrose wrote ideologically-driven, morally horrific papers and submitted them to leading peer-reviewed academic journals. Seven of these were published, and seven more were under review before their project was uncovered and subsequently revealed by the Wall Street Journal. The trio’s intention was to expose a kind of academic corruption (idea laundering) that puts radical social and political agendas ahead of scholarship and a dispassionate search for truth.
Aspen attendees had the opportunity to hear from all three whistleblowers who discussed what, in their opinion, is going on behind the scenes in universities today, and how activist "scholarship" is making its way into many aspects of our increasingly fraught civic culture. They explained what they dubbed "grievance studies," described how certain university departments are indoctrinating college students into a perpetual "grievance" mindset, and illustrated how "applied postmodernism" seeks to "remake society."
Selah Schneiter, at 10 years old, is the youngest person to climb El Cap in Yosemite Valley. Selah and her father Michael are from Glenwood Springs, Colorado and are avid rock climbers in the Roaring Fork Valley.

In February 2019, Jamie was appointed to the World Health Organization expert advisory committee on developing global standards for the governance and oversight of human genome editing. Jamie previously served in the U.S. National Security Council, State Department, Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as Executive Vice President of the Asia Society and with the United Nations in Cambodia. Jamie appears regularly on national and international media discussing global issues and his syndicated columns and other writing on Asian affairs, genetics, virtual reality, and other topics are featured regularly in publications around the world. An avid ironman triathlete and ultramarathoner and former White House Fellow and Aspen Institute Crown Fellow, Jamie holds a Ph.D. in Asian history from Oxford, a JD from Harvard Law School, and is a Phi Beta Kappa Magna cum Laude graduate of Brown University.

Dr. Sandra Bond Chapman is Founder and Chief Director of the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas, where she holds the Dee Wyly Distinguished University Chair. A cognitive neuroscientist with 50+ funded research grants and 200+ publications, she is committed to enhancing human cognitive capacity and the underlying brain systems across the lifespan. She applies novel approaches to advance integrated reasoning and strategic memory, strengthen resilience and healthy brain development, and expand innovative thinking.
One of the pioneers creating the field of brain health, in 2017 she launched the Brain Performance Institute to deliver rapidly emerging discoveries in cognitive brain health to the public. Dr. Chapman is also the co-leader of The BrainHealth Project, an international, multi-year research collaboration of brain scientists and change-makers focused on harnessing the brain’s potential to lengthen and strengthen its functionality.
After starting out as a math major at The University of Texas - Austin, Dr. Chapman shifted to a clinical focus, receiving a BA and MA in Communication Disorders from the University of North Texas, where she was later recognized as one of the top 100 graduates in its 100-year history. Dr. Adam Gazzaley obtained an M.D. and a Ph.D. in Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, completed Neurology residency at the University of Pennsylvania, and postdoctoral training in cognitive neuroscience at University of California, Berkeley. He is now Professor in Neurology, Physiology and Psychiatry at University of California, San Francisco and the Founder & Executive Director of Neuroscape, a translational neuroscience center engaged in technology creation and scientific research. He designs and develops novel brain assessment and optimization tools to impact education, wellness, and medicine practices. This novel approach involves the development of custom-designed, closed-loop video games integrated with the latest advancements in software (brain computer interfaces, GPU computing, cloud-based analytics) and hardware (virtual/augmented reality, motion capture, mobile physiological recording devices, transcranial electrical brain stimulation). These technologies are then advanced to rigorous research studies that evaluate their impact on multiple aspects of brain function and physiology. This utilizes a powerful combination of neurophysiological tools, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
Dr. Gazzaley is also co-founder and Chief Science Advisor of Akili Interactive Labs, a company developing therapeutic video games, and co-founder and Chief Scientist of JAZZ Venture Partners, a venture capital firm investing in experiential technology to improve human performance. Additionally, he has been a scientific advisor for over a dozen companies including Apple, GE, Nielsen, Deloitte, Magic Leap, and the VOID, as well as the President's Council on Fitness, Sports & Nutrition. Dr. Gazzaley has filed multiple patents for his inventions, authored over 130 scientific articles, and delivered over 600 invited presentations around the world. His research and perspectives have been consistently profiled in high-impact media, such as The New York Times, New York Times Magazine, New Yorker, Wall Street Journal, TIME, Discover, Wired, PBS, NPR, CNN and NBC Nightly News. He wrote and hosted the nationally-televised PBS special “The Distracted Mind with Dr. Adam Gazzaley”, and co-authored the 2016 MIT Press book “The Distracted Mind: Ancient Brains in a High-Tech World”, winner of the 2017 PROSE Award in the category of Biomedicine and Neuroscience. Dr. Momo Vuyisich is a founder and Chief Science Officer of Viome. He is also an Adjunct Professor at the University of New Mexico and New Mexico Tech. Besides providing scientific leadership at Viome, Momo focuses on product development, clinical certification, and clinical research.
Before co-founding Viome in 2016, Momo spent 12 years at Los Alamos National Laboratory, where he was the leader of the Applied Genomics team. His research focused on applying modern genomics to the areas of gut microbiomes, host-pathogen and microbial inter-species interactions, pathogen detection, cancer biology, toxicology, infectious diseases, antibiotic resistance, forensics, etc. He also helped set up several genome centers in Africa and Asia.

Stuart Mace was a botanist who came to Aspen in 1948 and created an ecological and artistic haven at Toklat, which became a foundational component of ACES.

Speaker: Van K. Graham, Retired Terrestrial Wildlife Biologist Description: The Greater Sandhill Crane is an iconic bird species of the Yampa Valley in Northwest Colorado. Van will present a narrative describing the life history of Colorado’s Greater Sandhill Cranes. He will discuss the annual cycle of crane migration in the fall and their return to our high country nesting habitats in the spring. His presentation will reveal intimate knowledge of how cranes interact with our mountain environment, other wildlife and human settlement in the West. Speaker Bio: Van K. Graham is a retired wildlife biologist who worked for Colorado Parks and Wildlife for 32 years. His interest in sandhill cranes began while working in Steamboat Springs where the core population of Colorado’s nesting and staging cranes is located. Sandhill cranes were listed as a Colorado endangered species in 1973 and by the mid-1970s research on cranes had intensified, primarily to gather baseline data and begin development of management plans and programs. Throughout his career he assisted with annual work plans, inventories, field studies, and development of a Greater Sandhill Crane recovery plan. He worked with CPW wildlife managers based in northwest Colorado and collaborated on plans with the U.S. Forest Service. Van currently lives in Grand Junction, where he works as a private environmental consultant, primarily in western Colorado. He is a Board Member of the Colorado Crane Conservation Coalition, which sponsors the annual Yampa Valley Crane Festival in Steamboat Springs in late August-early September each year. He maintains a deep interest in sandhill cranes and enjoys traveling to various locations to observe, photograph, and enjoy sandhill cranes across North America. While not on the job working to conserve wildlife, she loves exploring wild-lands, back-packing, wildlife watching, and all forms of skiing, in the U.S. and internationally.

Speaker Bio: Ray Mendez is a Manhattan native who started his career at the American Museum of Natural History in NYC. After leaving the museum he started his own firm, Work As Play. His projects have ranged from the insect wrangler (he coined the phrase) to movies such as Silence of the Lambs to designing exhibits for museums and zoos all over the world, including the first two trash museums in the US. He also has worked on large theme park projects such as Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The natural world and especially its small residents have always been his passion and he has served on the board of the Asa Wright Nature Center in Trinidad and Tobago for over 30 years.

Description: The Colorado River has long served as an icon of the arid American West and the central character in the story of human manipulation of water resources in the United States. However, the Colorado River Basin has shaped and been shaped by the development and use of rivers around the world. In this talk, Sara Porterfield will explore the history of a global exchange of information, technology, and ideology between the Colorado River Basin and international river basins in the late nineteenth century—an exchange that continues to the present day. Through stories of the engineers, bureaucrats, policymakers, and whitewater boaters who traveled to and from the Colorado River Basin to rivers around the world, she will show how the international history of the Colorado River Basin can help us better understand the past while also providing valuable lessons and insights for current policymaking and water management decisions.
Speaker Bio: Sara Porterfield, PhD, is a historian, river guide, educator, author, and founder of Tributaries Consulting whose work focuses on the Colorado River Basin and water in the American West. Sara’s love of the Colorado River began during childhood on family road trips across the West. After college, her interest in the river led her to working for the Colorado Outward Bound School where she has guided trips on the rivers of the Colorado Basin since 2005. Not content with just floating the river, Sara began her doctoral studies in order to understand the natural and human history of the Colorado and water in the West. After graduating from the University of Colorado Boulder with a PhD in History, Sara founded Tributaries Consulting in 2018 in order to bring historical perspectives to the Western water community through research, writing, education, and public outreach. Sara, her husband Jeff, and their pups make their home in Boulder, Colorado. When not writing about or researching the rivers of the West she enjoys running rivers, drinking coffee, trail running, eating chocolate, and doing yoga.
