She has contributed chapters to 44 textbooks, written 197 posters, served as the principal investigator on 1054 studies, written 674 published papers, served on or contributed to 38 journal editorial boards, functioned as the editor-in-chief of the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology for 10 years, and was a past member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology and the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery. She was elected Vice-President of the American Academy of Dermatology. She is recognized as a pioneer in cosmetic dermatology and received a lifetime achievement award from Health Beauty America for her research and the 2008 DermArts award for her contributions to dermatology. In 2010, she received the Albert Kligman Innovation Award and in 2016 she was awarded a Presidential Citation from the American Academy of Dermatology for her research contributions to advance the specialty. She received the prestigious Maison deNavarre award from the Society of Cosmetic Chemists for her contributions to the art and science of cosmetics in 2017. In 2019, she was the inaugural recipient of the Florence Wall Award from the Society of Cosmetics Chemists naming her as the most influential women in cosmetic science.

Dr. Valerie Gershenhorn has always believed in the integrative approach to healing. This is why she attended the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she graduated in the top 5% of her class. Dr. Gershenhorn then went on to complete an internal medicine residency at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York where she became chief resident. After staying on for a chief residency year, Dr. Gershenhorn earned board certification in internal medicine. Dr. Gershenhorn completed her dermatology residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital and earned board certification in dermatology. She has been practicing dermatology since 2006. Dr. Gershenhorn feels aligned with integrative dermatology because she believes that the skin is a “check engine light” for what is happening within the body. Her approach to patients always involves their internal health and well-being. Following her passion, Dr. Gershenhorn completed Dr. Andrew Weil’s Integrative Medicine program in 2020. In 2023 Dr Gershenhorn completed a Root Cause Dermatology course under the mentorship of Julie Greenberg ND in which she learned how to interpret advanced functional labs such as GI MAP stool test, OAT (Organic Acid Test), Mycotoxin test, DUTCH Hormone test, and many more tests to uncover root cause issues linked to skin dis-ease. Dr. Viera finished one year of general surgery and four years of dermatology residency at the University of Miami Miller Medical School. She has more than 20 years of experience in the field of medicine. Mark Kaufmann, MD, is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City, a position he has held since 1995. He was in solo private practice for 23 years until he joined The Dermatology Group in November 2017. Yuval Bibi, MD PhD is a distinguished dermatologist of Israeli origin who currently resides in the United States. He holds certification from the American Board of Dermatology and boasts a diverse range of talents and achievements. Dr. Bibi commenced his academic journey at Ben Gurion University in Beer Sheva, Israel, enrolling in the MD/PhD program. Jason E. Hawkes, MD MS is a board-certified dermatologist and Associate Professor of Dermatology at the University of California Davis in Sacramento. He completed his medical degree and dermatology residency training at the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he was also enrolled in the Program’s 2+2 dermatology research track. In addition to his clinical training, Dr. Hawkes completed a research fellowship in translation immunology at the National Institutes of Health as part of the HHMI-NIH Research Scholars Program and received a master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from Rockefeller University in NYC.
Dr. Hawkes’ principal clinical and research interests are the treatment of complex inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and eczema. Dr. Hawkes is currently serving on the Medical Board of the National Psoriasis Foundation and has served as the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of multiple pharmaceutical-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trial protocols. He is the recipient of multiple research grants and teaching awards and was recently named the 2021 Outstanding Educator in Psoriatic Disease by the National Psoriasis Foundation. Neal Barnard, MD FACC, is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, hormonal symptoms, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 100 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers and is the editor-in-chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.
As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care.
Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health.
Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee.

Jason Hawkes, MD MS is a board-certified dermatologist in the greater Sacramento area. He received his medical degree and completed his dermatology residency training from the University of Utah School of Medicine, where he was also enrolled in the Program’s 2+2 dermatology research track. Dr. Hawkes then worked as a medical dermatologist as a faculty member in the Departments of Dermatology at the University of Utah, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and University of California Davis. In addition to being a board-certified dermatologist, he completed a research fellowship in translation immunology at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and received a master’s degree in Clinical Investigation from Rockefeller University in NYC. Dr. Hawkes is currently serving on the Medical Board and Scientific Advisory Committee of the National Psoriasis Foundation (NPF), as well as his role as Councilor in the International Psoriasis Council (IPC). He is the recipient of multiple research grants and teaching awards, including the 2021 NPF Outstanding Educator in Psoriatic Disease. He has served as the Principal Investigator and Co-Investigator of multiple pharmaceutical-sponsored and investigator-initiated clinical trial protocols. He is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and 10 book chapters. Dr. Hawkes’ principal clinical and research interests are the treatment of complex inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and eczema, using novel systemic or biologic therapies. Nada Elbuluk, MD MSc specializes in pigmentary disorders and skin, hair and nail conditions affecting individuals of color, along with general medical and cosmetic dermatology. She is the founder and director of the USC Skin of Color and Pigmentary Disorders Program at Keck Medicine of USC. She also established the USC Skin of Color and Pigmentary Disorders Research Fellowship and the Dermatology Diversity and Inclusion Program at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. Dr. Elbuluk received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Princeton University. She received her medical degree and master’s degree in clinical research at the University of Michigan. She completed her dermatology residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Afterwards, she was a fellow and clinical instructor in the Dermatology Department at the University of Pennsylvania and then spent four years as an assistant professor at New York University’s Grossman School of Medicine, where she was the founder and director of the pigmentary disorder clinic and served as the diversity ambassador for the department. Dr. Elbuluk’s clinical and research interests include such pigmentary disorders as vitiligo and melasma, as well as conditions that cause lightening or darkening of the skin. Among the procedures she performs are chemical peels, microneedling, lasers and botulinum toxin injections for all skin types. In addition, Dr. Elbuluk is devoted to ensuring health equity for all patients and improving health disparities. A passionate teacher, she created a Skin of Color educational curriculum for Keck Medicine dermatology residents and serves as the director of curriculum equity for the Keck School. Dr. Elbuluk serves on the board of directors of the Global Vitiligo Foundation and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. She also holds various leadership roles and memberships in the Skin of Color Society, the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery and the American Academy of Dermatology. Additionally, she is a sought-after media expert and has been widely interviewed by local, national and international news platforms, including print, radio and TV, on a range of topics related to dermatology, as well as health equity. Outside of her clinical practice, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, along with traveling, playing tennis and trying new foods.

Dr. Davis completed her baccalaureate studies at Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, AL, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a degree in Biology. She obtained a Master’s of Science in Cell & Molecular Biology from Tulane University. She then received her medical degree from The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences in Washington, DC along with the Walter F. Rosen Award for Outstanding Student in Dermatology. Dr. Davis completed her dermatology residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where she was chief resident her senior year of residency training. While in residency Dr. Davis was influential in coordinating the first Skin of Color Symposium helping to promote awareness of the unique features of skin of color from both a medical and cosmetic dermatologic viewpoint. She has authored several journal articles and textbook chapters (both for medical and cosmetic dermatology) and presented some of her work at local and regional dermatology meetings. She is also the Co-Founder of Sunblock Kids which helps to bring awareness about the importance of sun protection at an early age. Dr. Davis is fellowship-trained in cosmetic dermatology and laser surgery. She completed an ASDS-accredited fellowship program under the directorship of Dr. Mark B. Taylor at the Gateway Aesthetic Institute and Laser Center in Salt Lake City, UT. Working with over 70 lasers, Dr. Davis has expertise in laser skin resurfacing, body contouring, and laser blepharoplasties. Dr. Davis is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), American Society for Dermatologic Surgeons (ASDS), the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery (ASLMS), the Women’s Dermatologic Society (WDS), Skin of Color Society, and the Texas Medical Association. Dr. Davis has served as the resident liaison for ASDS, a member of the curriculum task force for the AAD and has received scholarships for mentorship opportunities through the ASDS. She is the daughter of the late Fred Davis, Jr and Sherill Davis and a proud native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her interests outside of medicine include hot yoga and dancing, and she was previously an NFL cheerleader for the New Orleans Saints football team. She enjoys international travel, trying new cuisines, and spending time with her family and friends. He is the author of more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and 8 book chapters. Dr. Hawkes’ principal clinical and research interests are the treatment of complex inflammatory skin diseases, such as psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa, and eczema, using novel, targeted systemic or biologic therapies. She serves on the Board of Directors for the Society for Investigative Dermatology and editorial boards for Natural Product Reports, Scientific Reports, and Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine, and is an associate editor for Frontiers in Pharmacology.
Beyond her academic research and teaching activities, Dr. Quave dedicates significant effort to scientific outreach and engagement with the public. She is the co-creator and host of “Foodie Pharmacology,” a podcast dedicated to exploring the links between food and medicine, now in its fourth season. She is the creator and host of the “Teach Ethnobotany” channel on YouTube, which is dedicated to sharing educational videos about botanicals, pharmacology, and natural products. Dr. Quave has authored more than 100 scientific publications, two edited books, twenty book chapters, and seven patents; her work has been cited in the scientific literature more than 5,000 times. Her research has been the subject of feature profiles in the New York Times Magazine, BBC Science Focus, National Geographic Magazine, NPR, PBS, and the National Geographic Channel. She has written opinion essays for The Wall Street Journal and The Conversation. She is author of an acclaimed science memoir The Plant Hunter: A Scientist’s Quest for Nature’s Next Medicines. Meg Gerstenblith, MD is a board-certified dermatologist with a focus on melanoma and other types of skin cancer. Her training includes basic science and patient-based research focused on cancer, specifically skin cancer, in addition to Dermatology residency. After completing a second research fellowship after residency, she joined the faculty at Case Western Reserve University, where she focused on melanoma both in terms of patient care and clinical research. In addition, Dr. Gerstenblith mentored many medical students, residents, and fellows both in clinical care and in research projects. Dr. Gerstenblith is currently seeing patients part-time on the faculty of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and is finishing a collaborative research project, funded by the NIH, focused on melanoma as a part-time faculty member of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. She continues to mentor medical students and residents both in clinic and on research projects and truly enjoys the teaching aspects of her profession. Dr. Gerstenblith also greatly enjoys writing scientific literature as well as translating what she is learning to her patients in clinic.

Active in clinical research and teaching, she was voted by the UCSF residents to be the best dermatology instructor among the adjunct clinical faculty in the department in 2010 and 2020.

In addition to being the founder of Associated Dental Specialists of Long Grove (1981); he is the Research Coordinator of the Pediatric Dental residency program at Ann and Robert Lurie Children’s Hospital, Chicago, Illinois. Dr. Cannon has 40 years of experience in pediatric dentistry and has presented lectures both nationally and internationally. He lectures on many oral health topics including evolutionary oral medicine, the gateway microbiomes, biologic and bioactive dental materials (patents owner), probiotics, and all aspects of everyday Pediatric oral health. Dr. Cannon has humbly accepted two invitations by the Karolinska Institutet, first to the Nobel Forum (2016) and secondly to the Nobel Assembly (2017). Dr. Hawkes was also a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Dermatology in the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where he saw patients and taught residents, fellows, and physician assistants.

These programs empower and teach clinicians how to identify unmet-clinical needs and collaborate with research faculty and industry in finding solutions to these problems. Due to the measurable success that these programs have achieved, they have now become nationally and internationally recognized initiatives. As a humanitarian, Dr. Garibyan has pioneered and established sustainable, medical laser clinics in Armenia for effective treatments of scars and vascular anomalies. Her team has taken several lasers to Armenia and has trained Armenian physicians on the use of laser technology to treat life altering skin diseases. Dr. Garibyan recently founded and serves as the President of a nonprofit organization called “Face of Angel” to continue the mission of this humanitarian work. Lela Altman ND, MSA, LAc began working in the medical field in 1998, first as a nursing assistant, then as a medical assistant. This experience inspired her to pursue an education in the natural health sciences. Dr. Altman earned her Bachelor’s in Science from The Evergreen State College where she focused on ethnobotany, biology and chemistry. She then earned her Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine and Master of Science in Acupuncture at Bastyr University in 2011. She went on to complete a 3-year residency at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health. While working as a chief resident she completed additional training in evidence-based medicine and carried out diabetes research. She created the Digestive Wellness clinic at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health which she currently supervises. Additionally, she teaches full-time at Bastyr University, has a private practice at the Bastyr Center for Natural Health and sees patients at the Center for Integrative Medicine at Virginia Mason Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle, WA. Dr. Altman also is considered an expert in the field of small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Mazin Al-Khafaji is the founder and director of Avicenna Centre for Chinese Medicine, Avicenna Skin Clinic and Dermatology-M. He is recognized as the leading expert in the field of dermatology and Chinese medicine in the West, and over the past three decades has taught thousands of students worldwide. Leslie Baumann, MD is internationally known for her contributions to the field of cosmetic dermatology.
