Charles Yerkes
Charles Yerkes, from the Simple Not Shallow Blog, shares insights he has learned while growing into a deeper faith in and developing a vibrant relationship with Jesus Christ. That is what the name is about, keeping faith in Christ simple; simple enough that a child like himself can understand it and yet, not so shallow that when the storms of life hit, his faith is forced to run aground. The goal, simply, is to connect with other like-minded Christians; ones who also want to discover the vibrancy found in a simply kept yet profoundly known faith in Christ.
So, let me ask, what is your first reaction to the word repentance? I mean, did you just cringe a little bit? I don’t know about you, but I find that, too often, this word is one of the big, bad, negative words in the Christian vocabulary. When it is one of its most positive words.
To see this will mean that we need to look at this through the same lens of what it means to be a Christian. Which is a following of Christ that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to a life lived from what is learned. All three altogether, not one or the other. But all are intrinsically linked and in balance with each other.
Scripture referenced:
2 Corinthians 7:10 ~ Godly sorrow brings repentance, leading to salvation.
Luke 3:8 ~ Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.
Acts 26:20 ~ Repent and turn to God and repentance is shown true by what you do.
Luke 24:47 ~ Repentance leads to the forgiving of sins.
Acts 3:19 ~ Sins are wiped out, forgiven, when we turn to God, that is repent.
Mark 1:4; 4:12; Luke 3:3; Acts 2:38; 5:31; 8:22; and even Old Testament 2 Chronicles 7:14 all share repentance comes before forgiveness.

Welcome to the Simple Not Shallow Podcast. My name is Charles, and this is the Coffee Side Chat series. So named because of this amazing cup of coffee sitting on the counter right beside me. We are coming to you from the hallowed halls of Mykitchen University. The kitchen counter is the perfect place to stand, talk, laugh, and learn together while sipping on a cup of beautiful coffee.
Let me ask you a question. Why is forgiving others so important to our faith? Well, let’s kick this around while looking at it through the lens of what it means to be a Christian and see what we come up with. Now, this lens is a following of Jesus that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to a life lived from what is learned. All three altogether, not one or the other. But all are intrinsically linked and in balance with each other.
So, forgiving others… Why is it so important?
Matthew 6:9-15 ~ The Lord’s Prayer, forgiveness linked to forgiving others. And Jesus saying that if we do not forgive others God will not forgive us.
Matthew 22: 36-40 ~ The 2 greatest commands ever given and Jesus saying that these 2 from the basis for all other commands.
1 John 4:8, 20, 21 ~ If we do not love we do not know God.
Proverbs 10:12; 1 Corinthians 13:5; and 1 Peter 4:8 ~ Love forgive, covers over sin.
Proverbs 17:9 ~ Forgiveness promotes love.

In this episode, we will do this by delving into the common experience of feeling that God has withdrawn from us as Christians. Many of us have encountered this feeling where he seems so distant, though there was a time when we felt so close to him. What’s up with that?
In looking into this, I came up with two suggestions. I know there may be more, and please leave others in the comments section for me.

Hebrews 13:5 ~ God promises he will never leave or forsake us.

In this episode, we are going to look at the best and worst parts of Christian life. And we are going to do this while looking through the lens of what it means to be a Christian, which is a following of Jesus that involves a relationship leading to studentship leading to living a life based on everything learned. Indeed, it is only as we look through this lens that we can see these parts as being fully the best and fully the worst.
Let’s start with the best part. I like to start on the positive side of things. Don’t you? In this episode, we are going to talk about the question: Who is Jesus? I know. In a fairly short video, are we going to explore this question fully? Yeah, no. But we are going to talk about a framework you can use while pursuing your relationship with him while learning who he is.
So, what comes to mind when you hear the question, who is Jesus? You might be saying, “He is God.” Yes, but is that all we know about who he is? What else can you think of? “Lord and Savior?” Yes. What else? “Son of God, Our redeemer?” Yes, what else? “He died on the cross and was raised for our sins?” Yes, that is what he did, but who is he? “You going to keep asking that question or get on with the chat?”
Alright, I’ll move on. But the reason I ask is that, well….

In this episode, we are going to consider the questions: what is prayer, and why is it so important? Many have talked about prayer, going into depth on the hows and whys of it all.
So… what can a man, even one standing in these hallowed halls while chatting over a cup of coffee, contribute to the insights of such heavy hitters as these and other thoughtful scholars? I don’t know, but what better place to kick around an idea than at a kitchen counter over coffee?

In this episode, we are going to consider the question, what is Christianity? Or to phrase it another way, what does it mean to be a Christian?
I mean, the goal here is to view every topic discussed through the lens of what it means to be a Christian. We should probably discuss what it means to be a Christian. Right?
Here’s what I have found while looking through the Bible. Christianity is following Jesus. Now, before you say, “Gee, Captain Obvious, can you be any more obvious?”
Why yes, yes I can. But follow me for just a second as I add a little more depth to this obvious statement.
Scripture:
It is a Relationship:
Revelation 3:20 ~ I stand at the door and knock, if anyone opens the door, I will come in. I will dine with him and he with me. (The relationship begins. Doesn’t say, learn from me or do these things for me and I will dine [spend time] with you. Just open the door).
Ephesians 5:1 ~ we are called beloved children.
1 John 4:7-21 ~ Those who do not love (love is always relational) do not even know God. (So the relationship must first be established before all else).
Matthew 22:34-40 ~ The greatest commands are to love. (Relationship is a must.)
Involves Studentship (Discipleship):
Matthew 11:29 ~ Take my yoke upon you and LEARN from me. (The relationship means to be learning.)
Matthew 28:19 ~ Tells us to go make Disciples, not converts. We are to be teachers and trainers; this implies the studentship that is part of the relationship. Yes, this is a very brief look at the Great Commission, and I do not mean to remove any other aspect from it. But I am simply highlighting the studentship aspect that is integral to it.
John 15:15 ~ Jesus calls us friends because we know (have learned) what he has taught and made known to us.
Involves Doing, the Religion aspect:
James 2:17 ~ Faith without works is dead. It is not faith at all. A loving relationship that does nothing is not a loving relationship at all.
James 1:27 ~ Religion is a way of life, not mere church-time worship.
John 15:10 ~ Doing results from abiding in love (actively pursuing a relationship with God). If you abide, you keep the commands. Interesting that the command then given (v.12) is to love each other as he loves us.
Examples of studentship and doing religion without a relationship:
John 5:39 ~ Pharisees and Scribes pore over scriptures and miss out on Jesus.
Luke 11:42; Matthew 23:23 ~ Doing religious things but neglecting what is really important.
1 Corinthians 13 ~ This chapter shows the true value of trying to study and do things without love. Without a relationship to Jesus, they are worthless.
Can you love without doing?
James 2:14-25 ~ No.

I’m Charles, and this is the Simple Not Shallow Podcast.
In this episode, I want to introduce our new series of Podcast episodes. Entitled the Coffee-side Chat series. So named because of this cup of coffee on the counter right beside me. And we’re coming to you from the hallowed halls of Mykitchen University. The kitchen table is the perfect place to sit, talk, laugh, and learn together. While sipping on a cup of beautiful coffee.
I have found that too often, the lens we use tends to be a favorite aspect of faith or lesson that…. Let me put it this way: We can get so focused on that one aspect, that one tree, if you will, that we lose sight of that tree's place in the great and dense forest that is the Christian faith. I guess you could say that I want to help us see not only that one tree but that tree's place in the rich dense forest as well.
And yes, we will take God and his love very seriously, not ourselves.
One of the hardest lessons I’ve learned is to not take myself too seriously. In fact, you could say that I take myself with a grain of salt. And, as a Christian, I’m supposed to treat everyone as I would wish to be treated, right, the Golden Rule. So, I promise I will take you with a grain of salt as well. And perhaps that way we will get some wonderful conversations going about our faith.

After our last conversation, it took Old Man Tom a few days to get back by the house. But as old as he is, his memory is tack sharp. Indeed, it was he who reminded me that he had wanted to follow up and share what our last conversation had inspired.
He started off by saying, “Good morning, Charles. Hey, have you heard the rumor about the butter?”
“The butter? No.”
“Oh, I’m not going to spread it.” Now, I may have grimaced just a little bit. Because he began to laugh even louder.
Once he stopped laughing, he said, “Do you remember how we left off our last conversation?”
“Oh, yeah. But I’m not going to spread it.”
Ok, that’s what I wish I had said. What I actually said was, “Um, you said that there was something that your thoughts on being perfect brought to mind. Correct?”
“You remember!”
I simply smiled; well, no sense in telling him just how barely I remembered. And then, I said, “Tom, come on in, brother, and I’ll put the coffee on.
Now, if you haven’t met Old Tom just yet, despite his being full of such ‘quaint’ jokes, he is a man with uncommon clarity of thought. You might say he is a man blessed with more common sense than many a drug store has pills. Also, as he is usually a man of few words, I find it is generally well worth the listen when he does say something. So, I was genuinely interested in hearing him out.

The other day, as I was sweeping off my front porch, Old Man Tom came by and asked me something that caught me slightly off guard. He started simply enough by saying, “Good morning, Charles.”
“Good morning to you too, Tom.”
But it is what he said next that caught me off guard. He said, “Has anyone ever called you perfect?”
Have I mentioned that Old Tom doesn’t exactly beat around the bush?
As for me, not to be outdone, I very eloquently said, “Excuse me, what?”
“Has anyone ever called you perfect?”
“I was once called a perfect goofball, does that count?”
He laughed, shook his head, and said, “No. No, it doesn’t.”
Now, if you haven’t met Old Tom just yet, he is a man with uncommon clarity of thought. You might say he is a man blessed with more common sense than a drug store has pills. Also, as he is usually a man of few words, I have found that it is usually well worth the listen when he does have something to say.
Knowing this, I said, “Tom, this is going to take at least a full pot of coffee to talk about, isn’t it?”
He smiled real big and said, “Oh yeah, at least one.”
I said, “All right, come on in, Tom, and I’ll put the coffee on.”

The other day, I was speaking with Old Man Tom. Old Man Tom, that’s what everybody calls him anyway. Whether that is because he’s a wise old soul or, simply put, because he is older than dirt, I genuinely don't know. But whatever the reason, he is a very sage individual, having more common sense than a drug store has pills.
Anyway, on that particular day, he said: “Charles, I have a question for you.”
I said, “Good morning to you too, sir.”
“Oh, yes, good morning. So, I have this question… do you have coffee?”
“Coffee? That is your question?”
“No. But as the wise philosopher once said, ‘Coffee first, questions second.’”
“Wise philosopher…? Yeah, I have coffee, and I’ll put some on. What’s your question?”
“Jesus said that narrow is the gate and restricted is the way that leads to life (Matthew 7:13-14). He also said that he came to give an abundance of life to those who believe in him (John 10:10). My question is, how does this work? How can the narrow gate and the restricted, difficult path lead to an abundance of life?”
“French Roast.”
“What?”
“French Roast, this is definitely a French Roast type of question. Come on in, and I’ll put some on. And believe it or not, this will be my first coffee of the day.”
“First of the day? Well then,” he said with a smile, “it is fortunate for you that I came by with my question, is it not?”
Sometimes, it’s best to just remain silent, shake your head, and make the coffee, which is what I did.

He says, “Hey Charles, how would you explain Christianity in just a sentence or two?” Then, without missing a beat or waiting for my reply, he answered his own question. “I would say that following Jesus is about living a whole life from our whole life. Isn’t that an interesting thought?”
Well, indeed it was. It was so interesting to me that I asked Tom if he wouldn’t mind taking the time to explain it to me.
He said, “Well, you know, I might be persuaded to do that for a very good cup of coffee.
Fortunately, I just happened to have some excellent coffee stashed in the kitchen. I said, “Come on in, Tom; I’ll put some on.”

This past week I have had cause to get angry at work. Now, the ins and outs of why are not crucial to our chat. For we all know what it’s like to get mad at work, right? But the anger itself is what is of interest. Because it brought to mind an age-old question; is getting angry a sin? Is it a sign of weak faith? The teaching of Jesus is that of having troubles in this world but to be of good cheer found in John 16:33. And the one from James is that trials should be considered pure joy as they help produce perseverance, which brings about spiritual maturity and complete faith, which is found in James1:2. Can I just say that while context is king, tone may well be the Secretary of State? It is amazing how the tone used when we hear or read something colors how we listen to it; if we listen to it. For instance, the word “Hello.” Depending on the tone, it can be very warm and welcoming, or cold and even almost rude. The same is true of how we read the Bible. Isn’t that intriguing? The Bible can sound very warm, welcoming, and compassionate, or it can sound aloof, cold, and holier than thou. Which is a bit ironic, but…. The exact same words, the same exact verses, yet two very different presentations, two very different outcomes. The first leads to tuning in to what the Bible says and learning to love. The second to tuning it out, barely hearing what is on the surface of the passage, and so being more callous than we need to be. Can I just say that moving is one of my least favorite things in the world to do? But for the past two weeks, that’s where I have been, moving. But thankfully, that is all behind us now. Now, can I just say, concerning this Psalm, that the thing that impressed me most in this concise poem is that the Psalmist covers so much ground? This is perhaps the shortest Psalm we have ever done, but it is absolutely full of information. It is all about blessings—God’s blessing his people and the Psalmist celebrating that blessing. Yet, instead of quickly passing over this psalm and relegating it to a simple psalm about God’s blessings, let’s take a moment to steep in what is actually being said. When we do this, we find that it reveals something profoundly profound about those blessings. Well, I tell you what, let’s first hear the psalm. Then we’ll chat about it.

Can I just say that of all the things I was expecting to find in a Psalm of praise, the psalmist praises God for something that wasn't even on the radar? It caught me entirely by surprise. Though, it does make perfect sense. He is praising God for refining his faith through a similar process to which silver is refined. Silver has to have the impurities burned out of it in order to be pure, and that fire is very hot. Another way this could be said is that he is praising God for disciplining him and helping him grow in his faith. And yes, doing so through the fiery ordeals of his current situation and pain. I know, right? Yet, this does align with what is said of this discipline in the New Testament. That is simply mind-blowing. Now look, well, I tell you what, let's first hear the psalm. Then we'll chat about it.

Can I say that the Bible is full of beautiful twists and turns? For example, here in Psalm 59, we start with the Psalmist asking God to save him from fierce and strong enemies. Can I just say, that this psalm seems to have many layers to it? Specifically speaking, the phrase, “Those who say, there is no God,” can apply to 2 different sets of folks. The first is a straightforward application. Those who say there is no God are the people who simply want nothing to do with God. The second one is found just under the surface and it is, if possible, an even more tragic one. What if the irreligious unbeliever spoken of, is one we consider to be very religious? One who goes to church and says that they are a Christian. How can this be? Before going there, let’s first hear the psalm then we will chat.

Can I just say, one of the most satisfying things I have ever experienced is being trusted by other people? An earned trust, given because of who I had proven myself to be. Can I just say that praise is more than just a word to use in a church service? I mean, I often hear the phrase, “Praise God” or “I give praise to God” while at a church service and am often left thinking, “Ok… and what is the praise you’re giving?” Now hear me out. If a friend, co-worker, or boss were to come up to you and say, “I want to praise you,” maybe expressed as “I want to tell you, good job,” but then say nothing else; are you completely satisfied with such statements? Can I just say that the Psalms always seem to bring the heights of creativity and eloquent expression to bear in the worshiping of God? For example, here in this psalm, we find a poem that, on the surface, looks like one praising a king on his wedding day. Yet, under the surface, it is actually one praising the messiah and celebrating a believer’s relationship with him. This Messiah, according to the quoting of this Psalm in Hebrews chapter 1, is none other than Jesus. Which makes the believers all of us who believe in him. Yes, I know! To poetically capture the Messiah as king and those who believe in him as the queen and her attendants, all involved in a wedding… that is very eloquent indeed; and very biblical. Can I just say that it is so easy to read this psalm, number 41, and simply think, “Ok, this is just another cry for help?” Yet…. Yet, by slowing down just a bit and letting this poem sink in; I find this to be a praise of certainty. Yes, even in his trying ordeal, the psalmist stays certain. Can I just say that I find this psalm to be most interesting, most interesting indeed? Ever think it best not to say anything about something only to have the matter consume your attention, to burn within so to speak? When it moves to the forefront of your mind and will not let you go? Well, in this psalm David starts out by telling us about one such of his experiences. He begins by saying that he was determined to keep his mouth shut. He was going to take the high road and wasn’t going to be guilty of spouting off at the mouth when he shouldn’t be. And he was successful at doing this for a little while, but it didn’t do him much good at all; for this caused him great pain and he began to burn from the need to speak about it. In short, he was finding life empty and meaningless while the only source of meaningfulness was God. In God’s forgiveness… well, let’s hear the psalm before we go further. See ya on the other side.

Can I just say that it never ceases to amaze me how I can be reading a Bible passage I have read many times before and I’ll see something I have never seen before? Like in this episode for instance. I mean, we all know that sin is a bad thing, right? That part of coming to and relating to God is owning up to it. Owning it and asking for forgiveness and then pursuing God on his terms. Yet, in this episode, we get introduced to an idea that… I had not considered it before. This thought, mind you, comes from the Psalms originally being used in worship services. Here it is; the owning of our sin and confessing it and its consequences, is actually an act of worship. That it not only is what must happen before we can enter into a relationship with God but in the context of that relationship, it is also expressing worship to him. How intriguing is that? Well, before we speak more of this, let’s hear the Psalm, Psalm 38.

Have you ever been reading along in the Bible and suddenly you find yourself wanting to say something that you normally say to that one good friend who kicks you in the rear-end to get you moving in the right direction? You know, “Shut up.” Well, can I just say that this is what happened to me as I was reading the Psalm for this episode, Psalm 37? This is especially true of verses 1-9. Where it says things like do not be excited or vexed, agitated or envious, and to leave anger and rage behind. And instead, to roll all concern onto God’s shoulders. Yeah, life is going to happen, so focus on God and let him do the heavy lifting. A lesson that is easy to agree with and less easy to fully live out. But before going any further, let’s hear the psalm, shall we?

Can I just say that for this episode, number 64, there was so much to talk about? There is the basis for a compassionate view of the one without God in his life, not of sin or of evil, but of the individual. There are parallels between this psalm, number 36, and Psalm 1, how God’s graciousness is the protection he provides, and many more besides. It was hard to choose just one topic. But here we go, the one we’re going to talk about is God being the source of all life and living. Can I just say that this is the hardest Psalm, so far, for me to talk about? I mean, in each Psalm Tuesday episode, I share one thing that I learned or found to be profound. Yet, here in this Psalm, number 35, even after spending hours praying about it and pondering what to say… I was coming up blank. I was left wondering just how did this make it into a worship service, as the Psalms were originally used? I mean, yes, it’s an example of honest communication with God. And yes, it’s an example of the comfort of knowing God wants us to bring all our pain to him. And yet, these seem inadequate here. Because there is so much pain in this one. The psalmist says it's like he is bereft of a child. Hard, but not impossible. For, as the title suggests, I was led into a discovery of something quite profound. Something that speaks of the depths found in relating to and loving God. As always, let’s first hear the Psalm, then on the other side I’ll share what I’ve found.

In this episode, the Psalmist is praising God for his goodness. But how does he know God s good and worthy of praise? Well, the Psalmist states it rather plainly at a little less than halfway through the psalm. He says it’s all about perceiving this through actual experiences with God. Isn’t that rather profound? Have you ever been reading the Bible, and then all of the sudden have something simply jump off the page at you? Something that just demands your attention? This is what happened to me during the preparation for this particular episode. I was recording Psalm 33, which we’ll hear in just a moment, and all of the sudden, this one phrase in the very middle of the Psalm, well, approximately the middle of the Psalm, all of the sudden lept out calling attention to itself. It seemed to be telling us just how much God does love and value his People. And as I thought about this phrase, it seemed to open up some insight into a prayer Jesus made on our behalf in John 17. Now, I’ll tell you what, before we get into any of that, it might be nice for you to hear the Psalm first, so you know what I’m referencing. So, let’s listen now, we’ll chat more afterward.

In this episode, the Psalmist speaks of being protected, delivered, and surrounded with protective shields. I know, what’s new from the Psalms, right? This is what is new. This time, he is speaking in reference to himself. Yes, himself. Specifically, about the evil found within him. His obstinate refusal to admit his sins and ask forgiveness for them was the source of his torment from which he needed deliverance. He compares his situation to cream that has soured and curdled in the heat of the day. Now that is some nastiness. Yet, once he had decided to admit all to God and ask forgiveness, things changed. Joy and peace were his. Indeed, they became what shielded him from his torments. What an amazing thought. Have you ever contemplated the joy and protective nature of forgiveness?

In this Psalm, the Psalmist shares something profound. He shares that trusting God involves doing so even when your emotions have turned you upside-down. It involves telling God you know he is in control and that he has your back, and, at the same time, telling him that everything is not good. That, as things stand, they are depressing and a source of great grief. And asking him to change the situation, to rescue you from these sources of pain. In other words, it involves knowing that you are secure even while you are feeling anything but. There is an interesting note to add, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s listen to the Psalm and then I’ll share this thought that I find quite intriguing.

In this Psalm, we get a look at an all too human trait. Our need to be delivered from ourselves. We have a tendency to make the blessings of God a substitute for God. When this happens, we have placed the good things God gives in the way of our relationship to God. And in this psalm, in which the Psalmist is thanking God, he praises God for also delivering him from himself.

Have you ever noticed God’s presence in nature? Not that God is nature, but that nature reflects aspects of who its creator is. Haven’t you seen things in nature that remind you of God? In this episode, the Psalmist has and he relates this to us in a most eloquent and poetic manner. He shares how a dark and violent storm at sea reminds him of the power of God, of the voice of God. How he finds, in this chaotic storm, all of nature screaming out the glory of God. And, almost as if he knew someone would try and say that he was equating the storm with God, he ends by stating plainly that God is enthroned over the storm, he is the one who rules over the storm, he is not the storm itself. And because he is more powerful than the storm, he is able to bring peace to his people. Ready for this?

In this episode, David provides us with a beautiful example of how to pray. Granted, he doesn’t say, “This is how you should pray.” But he does offer us an example of simple, pure, and honest communication with God. It starts by acknowledging who God is and who he, David, is and is not. He then asks for God to stay close by. Because, otherwise, David will become like the dead, like wicked ones. And then… and then, he thanks God for staying close. And then he wraps us this prayer by asking God to look after his neighbors. All this makes for a beautiful prayer indeed and, possibly… an echo of The Lord’s Prayer in Matthew. Hang on.

In today’s Psalm, I heard something very cool. Here we hear a song of praise that involves the Psalmist asking God to refine his emotions, character, and mind. Praising God, asking God to refine him even further, and this because God’s kindness and graciousness are his focus. What an amazing thing! That trust in God will lead to asking for an even deeper connection with him. And doesn’t this remind you of the Greatest Command ever given, to love God with our heart, soul, and mind?

It has been said, one thing which sets Christianity apart from all other religions is grace. God, loving us so much, despite choices we have made or things we have done, that he offers us forgiveness of it all in order to establish a relationship with us. If we but choose to accept his offer. Divine grace, that which answers fully the demands of divine justice. The psalm in this episode, Psalm 25, offers us a beautiful example of God’s grace in action. It is what allows one, who knows his guilt is great to come and ask forgiveness of his sins. Knowing that God is faithful to forgive him. This allows him to fully desire and place his trust in God. What a miraculous thing grace is.

There is perhaps no Psalm that is more popular than this one, the 23rd Psalm. Sometimes called The Shepherd’s Psalm. You know it, right? “The Lord is my shepherd I shall not want.” We love the phrases: I shall not want, green pasture, still water, he restores my soul, preparing a table. God, where are you? Have you ever asked this question? If you’re like me, then you have… at least once. And the good news is that we are not alone. In this episode, we hear the Psalmist ask the very same thing. Indeed, we are privileged to get a glimpse into the journey he takes from despair, through reflection on God, on to an honest pouring out of his heart concerning his plight, and then, arriving at a very interesting destination. Once God answers, the Psalmist is quick to let go of the despair and begin to loudly praise God, the destination is joy in God. It is an honest journey through pain into the joy of acceptance and celebration of God’s answer. What an amazing journey to make.

In this episode, the Psalmist says many things. But there are two things which stand out to me: 1st
With the strong, and the blameless, and the honest man,
You prove yourself blameless and honest.
Yet, to those who are violent,
You will act violently.
And with the twisted and the false,
You prove full of twists and turns.
For you help the humble,
But the arrogant you humiliate.
That God treats people for who they are. Isn’t that intriguing. And 2nd is that a life of faith is reliance on God while we are doing things. The life of faith isn’t a life waiting around for magic to happen, for a fairy god-father to wave his wand and presto all is right. It is a faith where you work things out, as you do what you can, and simultaneously trusting God to take care of what you cannot. Faith in God is not to be a lazy faith. Well…

Can I just say that one of the things I love about the Bible is how subtle connections are often made between things? For instance, in this Psalm, acting prudently, with insight, is equated with searching intently for God. This also connects doing deeds in a loathsome and heinous manner with any deed done while not intently searching for God, which offers a connection to both Psalm 1 and the way of the righteous and to a New Testament passage, 1 Corinthians 13 and the way of love. Personal choices, personal consequences, and fairness. Do you see how these go together? In our last episode, we mentioned the fairness of God in dealing with folks. In this one, the psalmist fleshes this out a little bit. In this psalm, Psalm 7, we see the weapons of God being equated with a person’s own choices; with the traps they lay for others. Here’s a question. Should we, as Christians, ask God to stop evil? If so, how are we to pray when asking? Have you ever read a Psalm and wondered how it all fits together? For instance, in this Psalm, Psalm 4, the psalmist goes from asking God for help to encouraging others to scream and work things out in private. Christianity isn’t merely a religion. How can I say it isn’t? That is not what I said. I said it is not merely one. For authentic Christianity is a relationship that leads to religious practice. While Christianity works itself out in religious practices, these are not all that is to be found in Christianity. These are not even primary to the Christian faith. One of the most amazing things I find in the Bible is just how messed up, how ordinarily human, the people in it truly are. Why do I find it amazing and even comforting? The last thing I’d expect in the holy book of any religion is for it to be full of those who, considered to be heroes of the faith, are as flawed as the Bible’s are. No matter where you turn, those, listed as the paragons of faith, are portrayed as fully human as I am; full of faults and fears and missteps. This is what we explore in this episode.

When is it best to avoid asking the question, “Is ‘this’ a sin?” Did you know that by asking it, you can actually keep you from growing in Christ? Why do I say this and what is a better alternative? Grab your coffee and let’s talk about it. I find the answer to be when it’s taken you as far in growth as it can. Kind of like riding a bicycle; for training wheels can only take you so far. They are useful and needed for a while. But then you outgrow the need for them. And if you don’t get beyond them, you never get the full enjoyment of riding. The same is true with this question.

Can we have Christianity without Christ? Now, before you say, “You have been in quarantine way too long!” Listen to why I ask. How I find that some Christians seem to love their religion much more than they love Jesus. We discuss how this actually prevents them from experiencing the abundant life Jesus came to give. This is not a criticism of any particular group of Christians, it is a sharing of concern over a trend I see in Christianity today. One to settle for a Christian religion that has been sweetened to our taste rather than one that develops our spiritual palate to enjoy the profound richness found in a French press style of faith.

In this episode, we talk about the tenderness Jesus shows his disciples in John 16:12. Here he says that he cannot share more things with them because they are not ready to hear them. Knowing and acting on the difference between teaching and dumping information is the mark of humble tenderness and compassion. Jesus cares enough about you to take you right up to that line and he cares enough to never cross it. That is beautiful, that is loving, that is the profoundness of his tenderness. In this episode, I share a profound connection I made with Jesus while reading my devotional. This from My Utmost for His Highest by Oswald Chambers. I do not talk about what Chambers wrote, but I do talk about what profoundly affected me during the reading. So, here is a question for you, is your God big enough? No, seriously, is your God big enough? Big enough for what? And why is that important? That is what we are going to explore here in episode 17. Here is why I ask. I have found that people only ever practice their religion based on who they understand God to be. Which is to say, how they allow themselves to relate to God and how they put that relationship into practice in their daily lives. Which, by the way, includes how they relate to other people.
If you always know exactly what other people have to do, what you don’t have to do, and what makes for an authentic religious experience. And you know that any experience not matching your own must be suspect. Perhaps your God, your understanding of God, is too small. Anyway, that is what we kick around in this episode.

So, how do we not worry? I have always found worry to be a very great nuisance; a highly troublesome companion that is rather hard to get rid of. And, how is that even done? I mean not worrying about things? That is what we are going to explore here in this episode, number 16. We will explore how this is not done through having a good job, attaining some lofty goal, or by anything that we can do by ourselves. That it is only as we choose to focus on where we are and not on where we are not, that this is made possible. Where we are is the key.

Is life meaningless? Or is it that we just don’t see it? And what does this have to do with God? That is what we are going to explore here in this episode, episode 14. Here we will explore the idea that our purpose, our sense of meaning in life and our sense of worth were given to us from the get-go. From the very first time a human being was able to take his first breath, he had a purpose, his life had meaning, and he was of great worth to God. We will even take a brief look into what our purpose has become since then. We also consider that since God created us on purpose and with a purpose, perhaps our feeling of meaninglessness and worthlessness comes from our being disconnected from this great purpose. 013: Proofs that God exists are important for the Christian faith. Yet, as we saw in episode 4, these are not physical or scientific proofs. In that episode, we discovered a relational one, love for the unloveable. In this episode, we explore a second proof, on that is also relational. One that also involves love. This is the love Christians (other than myself) have for both other Christians and non-Christians. We will hear about both major displays of his love and smaller more personal displays of his love.
