Catholics Against Militarism (CAM) is an informal, grassroots, Internet-based movement of lay Catholics that seeks to identify and respectfully challenge militaristic attitudes in the U.S. Catholic Church. We conduct interviews with Catholics and other Catholic groups who are: 1) successfully registering dissent at the parish level, 2) raising awareness of the dangers of militarism through dialogue with fellow believers, and 3) spurring deeper, more honest reflection on the role of violence in our world.
An overview lecture on Gospel Nonviolence from the Shantidas story that Fr. McCarthy begins with to the Maura Clark letter at the very conclusion. Shared with permission from John Dear and Fr. McCarthy.

Mr. Turley is back to tell us about the latest book and to give us some updates on the latest news about the investigation, new artistic ventures thalami to bring the story of Merton's death to light, and a possible cause for canonization.

Fr. McCarthy reflects on the life and death of Roger LaPorte, who set himself on fire on November 9, 1965, to protest the Vietnam War, and offers some thoughts on the response of Catholic bishops, priests, and laity to this act, and the choice of Thích Quảng Đức, a Vietnamese Buddhist monk who set himself on fire in Saigon to protest the persecution of Buddhists by the South Vietnamese government in 1963. More recently, Aaron Bushnell immolated himself outside the Israeli embassy in Washington shouting "Free Palestine" on February 25, 2024.

Dr. E. Michael Jones returns to talk about Gaza and "Just War". (We always have to put that in quotes, because that's how it appears in the Catechism. The Trinity doctrine, however, and by the way, does not appear in quotation marks in the Catechism. Interesting, isn't it?) Buckle up!

This summer, put down your phone and tackle some serious reading with us! Ellen is teaching a live class on The Iliad. There will be so many themes we'll be discussing that will allow us to really examine and ponder more deeply the major topics that are discussed on this channel, but this time through poetry, not podcasting. Roger LaPorte (July 16, 1943 - November 10, 1965)
A Reflection by Fr. Emmanuel McCarthy
Roger La Porte immolated himself on November 9, 1965, as his response to the high tech and financially profitable massacre of the people of Vietnam that the U.S. politicians and military were conducting 7200 miles from the border of the U.S.—and to which most of the U.S. citizenry at the time were indifferent. The sacrifice of his life was his response to this wickedness and to the mass media deceit that was calculatingly covering up the daily fare of atrocities that men in the U.S. military were committing against the Vietnamese.
When news of his death, the manner of death and the motivation for his self-immolation became known, few in the Church had a good word to say about him, and most had clever, subtle, demeaning and dismissing innuendos when asked to comment on Roger. I was appalled then and remain appalled to this day at the way my fellow Catholics from Cardinal Spellman to Thomas Merton to Dorothy Day and most other Catholics threw Roger overboard.
Yet, I remember the aura of religious heroism, the almost reverend adulation, with which some of these same people treated the self-immolation by the sixty-six-year-old Buddhist monk, Thich Quang Duc’s, two and a half years earlier in Saigon on June 11, 1963—although they disagreed with self-immolation as a form of protest for themselves. Yet, where Roger was concerned, it was a radically different response, tenor and tone that was adopted.
But, to his eternal credit, Rev. Daniel Berrigan stood by Roger to the end and beyond, and in my mind rightly interpreted Roger’s act, motivation and witness. Dan did not and would not—nor would I— counsel Roger to choose such a witness. Dan, however, left no doubt after hearing Roger's death bed confession that Roger was following his conscience and was not trying to commit suicide, but rather, was voluntarily accepting suffering and possibly death so that others might have their sufferings relieved and their deaths avoided. Dan paid a price for standing by Roger publicly and privately, having the cruel wrath of Cardinal Spellman and his own Jesuit Order immediately come down on him.
Regardless of how we die, we all die totally dependent on the mercy of God. No one dies saying, “Lord, have justice on me.” In relation to the Vietnam War, Roger made his choice and others made theirs. Roger’s act resulted in him being burned to death. The acts of other U.S. Catholics and Christians resulted in tens of thousands of Vietnamese being burned to death.
Remember at this moment, the DOW Chemical Napalm Holocaust in Vietnam. Imagine the agony of that! That was Roger’s agony multiplied tens of thousands of times over. Indeed, Dan Berrigan after visiting Vietnam during the war called it “The Land of the Burning Children.” But one will search in vain for evidence that the wrath of Cardinal Spellman or of the Jesuit Order came down on any of the Catholics who set tens of thousands of human beings on fire in Vietnam, or on any Catholic institutions, e.g., universities, that taught Catholics to obey those who ordered them to burn Vietnamese people to death. Nor is there any evidence that the wrath of Cardinal Spellman or the Jesuit Order came down on any Catholic or Catholic organization who was indifferent to the destruction of Vietnamese children by the truckload each day. As is the case today in the Catholic Church hierarchy in relation to the genocide of the children of Palestine.

On November 18, 1969, during the height of the Vietnam War, a group of Notre Dame students protested the presence of Central Intelligence Agency and DAO (Defense Attache Office, Saigon) on campus. At the time, Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy was a professor in the literature department; he had also founded and was the Director of The Program for the Study and Practice of Nonviolent Conflict Resolution. Ten of the students got expelled. Fr. McCarthy ended up resigning, to show solidarity with the students.
On the 50th anniversary in 2019, Fr. McCarthy and four of the former students reunited to tell the story of what happened that day, why it happened, and how it has affected their lives, as well as the ripple effects it has sent through the institution of the University of Notre Dame.

Jason Knudson joined the Navy in 1998, deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, and now works in innovation and defense. We talk about the ongoing war in Gaza, among other things. Jason's perspective, which is different than mine, and comes from outside Catholic teaching on war, I see as a dose of worldly wisdom that the CAM podcast needs (not that I believe much in worldly wisdom on the topic, but it is worth hearing if only because, sometimes, worldly wisdom seems more connected to reality than the opining of the Catholic Just Warists who only want to talk about war in the theoretical and the abstract). Longtime listeners will, I hope, make connections with the ideas discussed more broadly on this podcast and will, I hope, share those observations charitably and thoughtfully in the comments section.
I highly recommend Episode 45 as a follow up to this conversation: https://youtu.be/SEMwUG2EJyc

Bishop John Michael Botean (Romanian Catholic eparchy of St. George in Canton Ohio) issued this Lenten Letter to his people in 2003. The letter was read from the pulpit of all Romanian Catholic Churches on March 9, 2003. This document represents the strongest antiwar stand by any Catholic bishop in the United States (and quite possibly the world) in relation to America's invasion of Iraq. Employing his full apostolic authority, Bishop Botean rules that it is morally impermissible for members of his flock to lend their support to this war effort. The document is avaiable from several sources on the internet. This particular version was posted on the Center for Christian Non-Violence (http://centerforchristiannonviolence.org/downloads/Pastoral_Letter_Iraq_War.pdf) retrieved on 7/28/2008.

Why are Christians so easily led, pushed, and lied into war time and time again? Why are we so easily duped? Ellen thinks the Military Chaplaincy is one reason. My guest in this episode, Melissa Presser, talks about her conversion to Catholicism and credits Edith Stein (St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross) with aiding in that conversion. Fr. McCarthy is my co-host in this episode. The Church credits the intercession of Edith Stein with the miraculous healing of his daughter, Benedicta, whom he named after her.

Trent Horn's original video is here:
https://youtu.be/6amuetZv-eM?si=VTq1g653L26NsFeY
This is more of a "reaction video" than a rebuttal video.
If it is a critique, my only critique is that Horn doesn't go far enough. It is a critique of his TREATMENT of the issue, not his views, and his treatment is the usual and standard approach in Catholic circles; thus his video is REPRESENTATIVE of the larger thing I'm trying to critique, if that makes sense.
In case it is not clear in the video, mine is a 3-part critique:
1) As most Catholics tend to do, Horn presents the Catholic controversy around the dropping of the atomic bombs ONLY according to highly selective Church teachings, and he references only certain Catholic arguments, specifically those that are made when looking at the issue through the keyhole of Just War Doctrine.
2) Though one can infer or assume that he is implicitly basing his exploration and discussion on tenets of the Just War Doctrine, he doesn't explain that doctrine to his audience, and so the "Catholic" standards and Church teachings are getting mixed up with secular or worldly definitions and rules, i.e. the UN definition of "war crimes," which muddles the issue.
3) He drops the ball when he fails to address how World War 2 AS A WHOLE would fare as a "good" or "just war" if the standards of Just War Doctrine were "strictly applied," specifically the standards of Jus In Bello: For if the war is not being conducted according to the rules, no Catholic can fight in it. So, WHAT KINDS of bombs the Catholics are dropping and under what circumstances or with what motivation becomes a moot point. The real issue becomes: Why did so many Catholics participate in an UNJUST WAR in the first place? That's the question that should be asked here.
I admire Trent Horn. He's obviously very intelligent, but this was not his strongest video. His coverage of the issue seemed sparse and kind of patched together. If I were to speculate, I'd that he is more than aware of the logical contradictions and inconsistencies that become obvious when you wade into these waters, hence he can only hint at or briefly touch upon the glaring problems before closing out the video, giving a nod to the "real issues" but stopping short of fully exploring them. Maybe that is because he, like 99.9% of the people in the Catholic Church, he has only explored these issues while looking through the keyhole of Just War Doctrine. Maybe, like 99.9% of the Church, he's never given any serious though to the the other, wider perspective of Gospel Nonviolence. Hence, I wanted to invite him, and you, to my retreat. I am inspired by my friend Peter's faith, and I thought it would be good to share with you some of his takes on life, God, society, and -- you know -- the point of it all, especially as we think at Christmas about the importance of charity. "The greatest of these is love."

Overwhelmed by current events? This is a reading of the essay "Events and Pseudo-Events" from the book Faith and Violence by Thomas Merton.
August 9 marked the 40th anniversary of Fr. McCarthy's ordination. This is a recording of the homily he gave at his first Divine Liturgy (Mass) on September 13, 1981, previously heard only by the people who were there. It tells the story of an incredible 20-year journey that led a Roman Catholic boy from Boston to being ordained by Patriarch Maximus V as a married priest of the Melkite Rite on August 9, 1981 in Damascus, Syria; but even more importantly, it is the story of a God who knows each person intimately and loves each person infinitely.

Seventy-five years ago, during the Second World War, Fr. George Zabelka was the Catholic chaplain for the 509th composite group, the group that dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In the mid-1970's, Fr. Zabelka repented for the role he played in the Second World War and became a public advocate of Christian nonviolence. No Catholic publication in the late '70s was interested in publishing the story of his conversion. Even after his story became internationally known in the '80s and a documentary was made, no American t.v. station, either Catholic or secular, was interested in televising it. This podcast tells the story of George Zabelka from the perspective of his friend, Fr. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy. Hear about the rocky start to their relationship, George's virtues of faithfulness and courage, their lunch with Charlie Sweeney (the Catholic who dropped the bomb on Nagasaki), and some of the fruits that came from Fr. Zabelka's work towards the end of his life. Note: Parts 1, 3, and 5 focus on George. Parts 2 and 4 digress but provide helpful context and more food for thought.

What if someone is trying to kill your wife and kids? Are Christians supposed to stand by and do nothing? No! Fr. McCarthy uses a story about Clarence Jordan in the 1940's to demonstrate how nonviolent love is neither passive nor powerless. It is a skill that requires practice and creativity. Jordan found himself in a situation that was not entirely unlike the situation many Catholics feel they are beginning to find themselves in today, in the summer of 2020. Though the details aren't exactly the same, the same dynamics seem to be at work, and Christians are facing the same kinds of choices he faced then with regard to the use of violence.

In his recently published memoir "Writing Straight With Crooked Lines" (2020), Jim Forest writes about growing up during the Cold War the child of two Communists, his struggles with marriage, and his spiritual quest, which led him to working with Dorothy Day at the Catholic Worker in the early sixties and to befriending some of the twentieth century's most famous spiritual leaders, including Thomas Merton, Phil and Daniel Berrigan, and Thich Nhat Hanh. Jim spent over a year in jail for protesting the Vietnam War, and he co-founded the Catholic Peace Fellowship with Tom Cornell (still in operation today), which helped thousands of Catholics to register their dissent as conscientious objectors during the Vietnam War. But that's just the beginning. This interview wasn't nearly long enough, but Nancy had made dinner, and well, it was growing cold, so we covered what we could! He joins us from his home in Alkmaar, The Netherlands.

Thoughts for Holy Thursday: Fr. McCarthy explains how the Nonviolent Love of Jesus for both friends and enemies is historically at the heart of His passion and death. It must therefore be communicated as being ineradicably at the heart of the Eucharist.

This is the third and final piece of a longer conversation with Fr. Charles McCarthy. We respond to Bishop Barron's article "1917 and Remembering Who We Are" (Jan. '20), in which he seems mystified as to how Christians, "presumably schooled in the moral principles of Jesus Christ," could have participated en masse in the "folly of war" during WWI, especially since the war was not "proportional". The answer is simple.

This episode is part two of a three part conversation. In it, Fr. McCarthy responds to Bishop Barron's take on nonviolence as expressed in his 2016 YouTube video: "Bishop Barron on Daniel Berrigan and Nonviolence." Can Christian nonviolence be likened to celibacy? Are those Christians who choose to be nonviolent, like Daniel Berrigan, merely providing an "eschatological witness"? It might be beneficial to listen to Bishop Barron's whole video (only 8 minutes, linked to below) before listening to this podcast.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated as the result of a conspiracy that included elements of his own government: This was the verdict in a civil trial that took place in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1999. Twelve jurors reached a unanimous verdict after four weeks of testimony and over 70 witnesses. They were only in deliberations for about an hour. Jim Douglass (a guest on the CAM podcast Episode 20) was one of the few who attended the trial. He wrote an essay about it, which Ellen reads on this episode of the podcast.
The American media was not interested in reporting on the trial and continues to tell the American public that Dr. King was killed by a lone gunman. Wikipedia still says: "King was fatally shot by James Earl Ray at 6:01 p.m., April 4, 1968"; the trial is only mentioned briefly, buried under the subtopic "allegations of conspiracy." The NPR article linked below, written in 2018, is a typical example of mainstream "journalism" that takes seriously only several government investigations but fails to mention the civil trial that took place or the verdict in that trial. NPR dutifully assures you: This case is closed; nothing to see here.

Jim Douglass, author, Catholic Worker, and lifelong peace and justice activist, explains the importance of Christ's command to "love your enemies" (MT 5:44), recounting an experience he had with an "enemy" within the Church during the Second Vatican Council. He also explains how John Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev's own version of love of enemies allowed them to work together to avert nuclear war. He shares with us the three things Dorothy Day told him before she died, and he talks about the connections between John Kennedy, Robert Kennedy, Dr. King and Malcolm X, and why they died, and why it matters. She organized two conferences at the Vatican on Just Peace and Nonviolence (in 2016 and 2019), the first of which was likely a major impetus for Pope Francis writing his World Peace Day message in 2017: "Nonviolence: A Style of Politics for Peace." Today (October 11, 2019) is the twenty-first anniversary of the canonization of Edith Stein (Saint Theresa Benedicta of the Cross). Fr. McCarthy tells us about his connection with this fascinating woman, how he came to name one of his daughters after her, and how a prayer tree to Edith Stein resulted in the miraculous healing of his daughter in 1987. In the first twenty minutes, we talk about the lack of interest, on the part of the American Catholic media, in reporting on the full background of the miracle. In the hour that follows, we discuss Edith Stein and the details of the miracle.

Fr. McCarthy returns to tell us about the 37th Annual 40 Day Fast for the Truth of Gospel Nonviolence, which begins on July 1 and ends on August 9. Listeners are invited to fast over the next 40 days and may wish to use this time to go deeper into the spirituality of Gospel Nonviolence by listening to "Behold the Lamb," a professionally recorded retreat that was given by Fr. McCarthy at the Shrine of the Lamb in Knock, Ireland. (Find links below). It is widely considered to be the most comprehensive and spiritually profound proclamation of Jesus' vital Gospel message of Nonviolent Love. After listening to "Behold the Lamb," you will understand why Fr. McCarthy is considered "the most powerful voice for nonviolence in the world today" (Walter Wink, Professor of Biblical Interpretation, Auburn).

YOU CAN SIGN THE LETTER TO THE ARCHBISHOP OF DENVER TO SUPPORT THE BEATIFICATION OF BENJAMIN JOSEPH SALMON HERE:
May 30th is the feast day of Saint Joan of Arc, an uneducated peasant girl from France who lived during the Hundred Years war. At the age of 13, she began hearing voices that told her what she must do to save France. Five years later, she dressed as a boy, rode across the countryside, and led an expeditionary force into battle. She was eventually tried for heresy and burned at the stake. Fr. McCarthy talks to us about the problems she presents (or should present) for Christians and how we can determine what is worthy of imitation in the lives of the saints.
John Carmody served as a 2nd Lieutenant Platoon Commander in Vietnam from 1967-68 in an area called Leatherneck Square, nestled near the DMZ. He talks about the "unbridled brutality of war" and explains why it is "a sick process." He also talks to us about his work with PeaceTrees Vietnam, his thoughts on PTSD and Just War Theory, and how he came to be the Founder and Director of the Center for Christian Nonviolence.
