Hosted by Reverend Billy and Savitri D, EARTH RIOT is a comedy-infused, music-filled exploration of humanity’s most urgent issue -- the planet’s Sixth Extinction. Made by "Earth-loving urban activists" from The Church of Stop Shopping, this podcast educates, inspires and urges listeners to embrace reality and take action. Featuring “News From the Natural World,” a weekly gathering of climate change’s latest science, and insightful interviews with radical leaders in environmentalism and activism.
So many young people come out of their very young years looking the polluter generations in the eye. They make basic things clear about survival and right and wrong.
Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase is the most obvious of our climate criminals. We don't have that many gangsters at his level. He puts his trillions behind the fabulous profits made by putting carbon into the air. He killed the Paris Climate Agreement. And now, after this summer's science fiction scale disasters, we know our activism must somehow articulate what people like Dimon are doing. We haven't done that yet. We need to OUT the poisoners. How? Well, the Church of Stop Shopping goes into the big Chase banks in Manhattan, and we dance on their desks....Do you have a better idea?
On one side, human violence: War, Trump, starvation, toxins, etc. On the other side, the more creative violence of the Earth: like a hurricane in the Pacific.
Caught between between humanity and the Earth, we are trapped. And what are we doing? We're passive. As consumers, we believe we can be bystanders. In the EarthChxrch, we suggest that you side with the Earth. The Earth is teaching us how to be radicals again. In this episode of Earth Riot Radio, animals take over the TV studio. Coyotes make superior meteorologists.
The history-killing heat waves, wars, 100-degree ocean, glacial floods, and on and on in a new normal of horror, makes us want to change completely.
The necessary revolution is here in this extraordinary moment. Our only task is to live up to it. The Earth's 6th Extinction is not demanding a response within our quiver of desire, or our strategy, or even our reverence. It is happening, that's all. And a new Wisdom must come from us.
And this applies to the climate crisis, too. Only revolution can make peace. Real change always involves the sacrifice of life.
We are allowing the powerful to amass unprecedented fortunes from mass murder, and they are raking in the billions in plain sight. People seem locked in passivity. The CO2 increases in the atmosphere every month. If a few of us would risk life and limb to oppose the fossil executives, would people break out of their hypnosis and rise in great numbers?
Earthalujah!
But we are looking for a kind of conversation in public space that is as regular and full or neighborly affection as it is, in 2023 at least, a revolution in communication. The stories blow in the wind in one direction more than any other direction, and that is called “Culture". The absence of a sensible delivery system for spoken word stories is the key to why we are not communicating about the Earth’s crisis. No we aren’t. Not enough. Not clearly. Our climate reports comes as pixels, data, tragedy and celebrity compassion, but nothing as powerful as a friend who shakes us and demands that we change. And we shake and shout at all the friends and strangers who conspire with us to poison the air and grow the storms.
It is where Human and Earth Rights are the same. Walking into the property of Power and declaring your freedom.
To walk across the property line of an Earth criminal like JPMorgan Chase or British Petroleum or Monsanto/Bayer is to enjoy a jolt of honesty. It feels like fresh mountain air. To walk across the racist part of the Senate, or the sexist part of sports or religion or health... These are the distortion fields of Consumerism in our lives, the inequality that crushes us, but then is defeated finally by our ability the protest with our bodies and souls. In this Earth Riot, listen to Angela Davis, Nina Simone and Tony Morrison.
The passivity of human beings in the face of the fossil killing fields... that is the riddle of our age. If we go ahead with our current shrug of the shoulders, we are offering up our children to early death. Why?
Yes, we do have an alternative. That would be - ending our opposition to the vivid process of life that is demonstrated everywhere around us by legions of living things. The Earth is our government, our economy and culture, our religion, and our well-being. Something about the "hottest day of the Earth's history" of last week, plus a thousand disasters all over the place... a critical mass is reached that engages us and makes passivity a crime. Earthalujah!
Here at the hottest day in history is MAGA Republicans fear making violence directly, as surely as their friends the NRA encourage mass shootings. Are the fear-mongers impressed that their climate science denial became so real, so fast? For those of us who recognized the truth in the warnings by scientists going back 30 years, and who sensed in the deniers a dangerous kind of spiteful rejection of common sense - we are not surprised. We are charged with discovering the activism that is so necessary now. What are we capable of? We must move beyond fear. As activists we know that the heat-waves, downpours, viruses, sea-rise, hail stones, polar melts - are the reports of a conscious living being - the planet Earth.
All the words we should have used to explain to one another the deadly importance of the climate crisis are Consumerized.
We’ve got to be surreal. We’ve got to be exorcised. We’ve got to be impossible sometimes, to understand. Got to fly from the edge of the cliff. We are weightless now. We are falling through natural disasters and we don’t know how to talk to the Earth. All we can say is “This is unprecedented.”
Things happen in the US that our words don't reach. We shout, scream, shoot bullets but none of what we do is a realistic response to the Earth's crisis.
We need logic more like the surrealism of evolution. We need common sense more like the paranormal intuition of a psychic who has a crying jag. We have murdered so many people that we have created a new creation-wide level of lamentation, a moan of pain above the dog frequencies beyond ultraviolet light but right here. Our activism comes straight from the mysteries.
Consumerized Capitalism is designed to multiply our product choices while taking away from us the one choice that matters.
We live in the natural world. It turns out that is a science fiction concept. That is why in our Earthchxrch today we feature Ursula K. Le Guin. e feature Jordan Neely, who moon-walked in the tunnels under New York City until his anxieties excited a certain ex-marine to violence. And we honor on our show the singing of three birds who break down the walls of nationalism, religion and militarism - and they are the Siberian Crane, the Arctic Tern, and the Bar-Tailed Godwit. These three birds fly around and around the Earth, free to make the one choice that matters.
What kind of people would we be, if we were so powerful that we successfully defended the Earth?
It happens once in a while, some of us are possessed. Call it "Justice Possessed". Black Lives Matter, ACT UP, Standing Rock, Occupy Wall Street, The Rapist in Your Path, #metoo... Many of us have never been that possessed. Many of us think of a revolutionary as someone in the distant past. No, now it's you and me. The Earth tells with every wildfire that it is you and me and the time is now.
Featuring Reverend Billy Talen, Savitri D, Gail Bradbrook, and the marvelous work of Jason Candler.
The evil of Hitler and Hirohito was clear. In 2022 the investor class is openly reaping profits from toxic gasses and it is killing everyone. Every day the celebrity billionaires are in the news, unchallenged. The Earth is the radical today. The Earth is doing things that no-one thought possible. The Himalayan mountains are melting? There were people who didn't want to believe that Hitler was possible, or that the Japanese would ever matter to us - out beyond the Pacific. We have already had many Pearl Harbors and the investor classes hold on the media and public figures is so strong that we consumers remain immobilized in our deadly sleep, watching the screen.
The rapacious shopping economy has been our devil for 20 years in the Church of Stop Shopping. But that doesn't matter.
Because this week the zombie tsunami crashes on us all. The News from the Natural World in this Earth Riot episode is breath-taking in the finality of it violence. And meanwhile we shout Earthalujah!!! ...because we are grateful that life evolves, and our dead bodies are released into the sky as flowers and Chestnut-sided Warblers.... Earthalujah!
The investor class is not just callous and probably criminal. They seem to have no idea what Justice means.
The nations and tribal people of the global south, struggling with drought, floods, fires, mudslides, sea-rise, aka Climate Chaos... are in Egypt calling out to the toxic profiteers in the north and getting endless negotiations and debt-trap loans. They are an echo from centuries of colonization and slavery. The rich countries cannot understand why Justice is necessary. They remind me of Tsar Nicholas. Power has made them so uncurious that they won't see the revolution coming.
A Forest Lets Out the Liberators in Jails
Brittney Griner and Alaa Abd el-Fattah speak to us in this Earth Riot, and two women from New Zealand follow up: India and Leila...
My attempt to translate the Earth's language is guided by these special teachers. First, I try to leap over Trump's wall, where I have been trapped by my name - William. And later in the riot I look for a new kind of media for the message of the Earth. I discovered this media in the people in Times Square listening to us sing and preach. The people can carry the echo of our message because this crowd is as full of colliding life as a forest clearing.
Earthalujah!
The riddle of our time is, "How can we be passive in the face of the Earth's crisis?" The answer is, we are in a trance state induced by extreme Consumerism.
We are coming to understand that Consumerism, the enforcement arm of Capitalism, is deadly in large doses. In New York, a recent study reported, we can experience 10,000 advertisements daily. In the life-and-death emergency in which we find ourselves, we will go directly to the people who are suffering this enchantment, and interrupt them. Shock them. Force them to focus. Bring them the questions that might lead to action.
How do we start actions over? Start by living in the present tense, that vivid moving thing. In consumer society, which imitates the old religions and fascism -We are distracted away from what we are doing now.
Our present tense life is an infinite source and is where the forest we are walking in comes through to us. It is where the alliance with the Earth comes from. It is impossible to imagine partnership with the hyper evolution called the extinction.
Somebody give me an Earthalujah!
And don't forget to glue yourself to the museum wall. And dance with Pussy Riot on the altar. Before the revolution, nobody knows what to do, so Evolve with nature and be extreme. Earthalujah!

Jason and I send the radio segments back and forth and back and forth again. We build the show that way. So this week, I completed the two minute “Goodbye and Thank You!” segment, before we had discovered the tape of Angela Davis speaking at the Washington D.C. Women's March, which is now the says-it-all climax of the show. So thank you so much Angela Davis. I'm expressing my gratitude here, with a heart that feels like the thousands grateful on that cloudy day in D.C.
Can we be so extreme that we are realistic? When will our activism rise to the occasion? How could the stakes be more life and death? Is there a human expression that gives the meaning of the melting of the Himalayas, the ocean currents changing direction, the wave of silence called the Sixth Extinction? Is the moral equivalent of war still missing, tragically missing? Oh, to be human in this time.
We are calling out Jamie Dimon's $5.5 Billion loan to the TransCanada pipeline threatening sovereign Wet’suwet’en territories in British Columbia. We entered the Sacred State of Exalted Embarrassment, and for a few moments our deeply held values aligned with our actions. The Earth is guiding our new politics as we connect with the incredible fight of Wet'suwet'en Protectors. Like the atmosphere, all is in flow, causing and receiving, crossing borders and stopping pipelines, like wolves, like humans. Be the storm!
Two I’s make We! We is a community. They is a crowd. We as a community can never be defeated, Stay STRONG!” The great artist and activist Vinie Burrows leads to a life of creativity and peace. Plus Aspens, Ants and Hurricane Fiona.
"Progress" in the sense of Republican profits is the kind of thing we needed to ban many years ago. At this point, as the Sixth Extinction drowns 1,500 Pakistanis and the investor class drinks a toast to murder, we must imagine a kind of progress that starts with love and forgiveness. And goes from there to riding the waves of calving glaciers and collapsing jet-streams. Our future, if we are being honest, is a brutal dream. Something like trees who come clutching axes in their branches.
We can't catch up the Earth no matter how hard we try. Numbers and tech and human efforts to defeat the catastrophes we invented are no match for the energy of the Earth. With Saint Barbara Erenreich and The Stop Shopping Choir and News from The Natural World.
The Big Lie is everywhere. It's the atmosphere, it's glyphosates, it's radiation, it's the ultimate poison. The Big Lie comes in many forms, from QAnon to the Atom Bomb. But it's so saturating, that if we walk along the sidewalk and encounter someone telling the truth, those words hit us like magic mushrooms.
To sell the simple truth is now, in 2022, to be a radical revolutionary. Join us. The Earth is a conscious living being and we still have a chance to join up. But you gotta tell the truth.
We environmentalists must move our point of view from the center of human power to a point in outer space, back somewhere in the early days of the big bang. Then maybe we can overpower these gods that make poisoning the Earth sensible.
We are marching toward men marching toward us. They have a god above them, who guarantees their eternal life. The god is Krishna, Jesus, Jehovah, Allah, Buddha, Donald Trump, Mickey Mouse, and the pink plastic ruler in the Cracker Jack box. They don't believe in climate change -- that's a sneak attack from a foreign god. Just before these god-people kill us, they see that our supreme being is the Earth, and so they, our fellow earthlings, our murderers, are a part of our mysterious guide. We explain to them that life and death are unexplained but very beautiful. The Fabulous Unknown!
As the big institutions try to spread their life sentences, they are stopped by love. It’s the same old story and that old story of erotic romance is making a comeback as the libraries are burned down by fear of sex and foreigners. The books are in our bodies and we dance away.
We sing our strong beliefs in the songs in today's Earth Church radio show... The title track of our new record "Change Without Us", is in this show at the 3 minute point. It's a disco song for radical earth activists in the time of 6th Extinction. The libraries burn but we got the songbook in our bodies. We have more control of our fate than Q’anon or Scientologists or Exxon would think- because we keep falling in love. We keep falling in every kind of love.
Most of us know how we will be required to be far more radical than we have been, and very soon. We have quietly agreed with ourselves that we will try to work with the complete collapse of this thing called civilization. Personal extreme change will match the conditions of the Earth's release of fire and flood, virus and death in this Sixth Extinction. Covid, Black Lives Matter and the Ukraine Invasion are object lessons for us. Our house, career, and city... Our plans for parenting and educating and accumulating comforts will be abandoned. Strange evolution will overtake us, sudden intimate agreements, a faster dance in the disappearance of time.
The people who set up the COP conferences invite billionaires and their enabling professionals to a poker game with a large herd of aggrieved advocates. The game is rigged, but it takes ten days. But that is the essential story of the conference, until now. With the physical environment so clearly deadly, the question "How will we survive" is bringing back the emotions of decency. Good people who want to live will tear apart a refinery with their bare hands over the weekend. As they do this, they are happy.
No matter how bad the floods and diseases and storms get, most of here in consumerized Americak keep basking in gradualism. It isn't really happening...not yet.
And when I say God I mean celebrities, the first crypto million, and the hope that we will all have one more moment of unexpected sex. What do we really worship? What were we worshipping when the Earth slipped us through the door to our own extinction?
The Webb telescope images didn't show us more Earths. We have been living in a gift. Join the Earth Church, your own version. Be grateful, even if our time is up. Gratitude we should have expressed long ago can be concentrated in a message to the forests that are still standing.
It's the Earth, the Earth, it's Earth... it's always Earth.
The planet is spinning toward extinction. We might survive if we learn how to spin with it. When a glacier the size of Manhattan melts and disappears, then we have to melt, too. There is no history that we know of to deal with what is happening. We can't even make the phrase "extinction" popular enough to help people steal it back from blockbuster films and video games. We have to try every dance, every language and music and every rupture of what we thought was true. A new activism for the Earth!
A barrier to mounting powerful actions for species and ecosystems is the loss of forgiveness. We face self-blame for the ineffectiveness of environmentalism. We give ourselves unrealistic schedules of work. We can be harder on ourselves than the polluters because we are more familiar with the facts of the crisis, which are devastating.
This is a time of name-calling and finger-pointing, and it's not just from extremists. It's everywhere. But we've learned in the Earth Church that right-thinking doesn't persuade like spiritual joining. Would we ever offer best wishes to Jamie Dimon or Jeff Bezos? In this radio show we listen to reconciliations in Rwanda. At the sentencing of Dylan Roof, we witness radical acts of compassion.
Something happened on the way to the 11th rally and march. After the Supremes ruling gutted the EPA, we went down to Foley Square, site of the NY State Supreme Court, to what? To make new climate change relationships...
All the groups were there, from Sunrise to Extinction Rebellion. Each carries its own history of brazen love struggling against the traditions of fear. The Supremes are betting that we will enter their cages of hate, like good little consumers. But it may be that the Trumpian lawyers-in-robes have made so many deadly rulings that a new hybrid of justice seeker is in the making. So many different kinds of activists have mixed in the streets to the point of dizzy exhaustion. Will we stagger out of all this with an Earth-loving super-majority?
The spinning wet white-and-blue rock that we call home is completely outside the systems of governance that order society. It is extreme and changing radically in all directions. Our only hope is to connect with the Earth with an invented and secret way of life, evolving into a personal wildness. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Our 'Stop Shopping' community has landed in a great urban gospel tradition of the storefront church. Every Sunday at 5:00 pm we gather in the empty branch bank on Ave C & East 3rd St in New York's East Village. The "nabe" is all the races, though the famous local culture is "Loisaida" -- the presence of Puerto Rican culture is strong. Our songs are about the Earth's crisis but belted out as gospel. We welcome people who come to the door, hearing the 30 voice Stop Shopping Choir. "We love the Earth!" "It's the Extinction but it's Evolution too and we're Alive now!" Some of the folks walk in and sit down and begin to clap their hands. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
It isn't clear to us how to pass into the cloud of nothingness that already claims so many lives. How do we warn others, and is survival to be the only project of our lives?
We send signals into the unfathomable extinction like bats and their echolocation. And we listen.

The suicide and murder epidemic by children? Children cannot grow up in the this monoculture. Children breakdown as their families and communities explode. Why is this happening? Because love’s destruction is identified as a profit center. We have made the violent movie that we can’t stop. The Earth, though, is not helpless. The Earth has new life, new love and new caring. But the storms and wildfires are a part of that new life because we live in the time of extinction. We will have to become strange to evolve. As we become radical by re-inventing who we are, we ask the Earth for a place, a mind, a love. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
I propose that we revisit the Earth Riot of March 6, with Ukraine freshly invaded, with the onset of the old-fashioned war, a sort-of-like-World-War-2 war. The trial of today's Bonnie and Clyde -- Johnny and Amber -- was beginning to form in the Covid-addled mind of America. In the past 90 days, "eras" have passed. The culture is spinning out of any kind of gravity. There's no plan. The future is a bomb. Let's get back to reality, children.

A young girl sits in a window of the projects. She watches an oak as it goes under the chainsaw. The park has been sold to someone. The man starts cutting the branches that look like gestures.
The oak is older than her parents. It has always been there. A loud machine chews it to bits. Protesters down there are dressed up like deer, carrying signs and chanting. The girl watches the deer dancing, waving branches.
As the physical environment asserts its power, we hunger for the Earth as it really was and may someday be again. But as the children in the windows will learn, to remember the Earth is to remember the crime. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Putin's drilling became murder in broad daylight. Exxon & JPMorgan Chase do the same thing. Is Pakistan and India's heat wave cooling from 110 degrees? Is the fire season already started? Chase's Jamie Dimon is the prince of New York. He makes almost $100k each day. Gaseous toxins from his investments make climate murder every day. What's his body-count? He is the prince of ashes. Mother’s Day and Jane Jacobs' birthday set up a report of our activism for Mother Earth. We push our secular hot-as-hell Earth Church up against the threatened forest along the river and then we are hand-cuffed somewhere in that sing-along because there were chainsaw people interrupted by our concert and so it’s off to jail... which happens to be on the same street as the Church, so it’s easy to repeat, just like a song. The youth among the Earth defenders, from tweeners to college debtors, are fierce like the folks in Earth First and Redwood Summer. They arrive with a reckoning, a moral sureness. In this "Earth Church of the Air" we meet an eco-Marxist named Kala, a holistic healer named Wally, and Ariella -- freshly returned from jail for singing in a tree surrounded by men with chainsaws.
Ariella is one of four tree-sitters in the Stop Shopping Choir, arrested in the endangered East River Park. Our Earth Church is a block away in an unrented bank branch. We gather each Sunday at 5 pm (address: 36 Ave C at East 3rd Street in the East Village). To oppose real estate power in New York City is full of pressure. One of our activists took his life yesterday. So our friend has gone with the 500 trees that went under the blade so far.
May each us find that fierce defender within us, recover it from passive Consumerism, and go to the trees.

Our empire has wolves and goddesses at the gate. And super storms, a hundred wildfires in California and a virus that has not begun to fight. The birds are singing one more time, and the turtles find the sun on the log and the eagle surveys Brooklyn from underneath the landing jets. It's all strange but it isn't too strange until it's actually killing us and OH -- RIGHT -- IT ACTUALLY IS KILLING US. We keep forgetting the Extinction is serious. The Earth is who we pray to for guidance in this time of TOTAL CHANGE. Damn!

The green spaces are supposed to be an escape to the natural world -- away from the physical environment of lies that pervades our life. But the emissaries from Consumer World, unconsciously high from the 10,000 adverts that hit them daily, must control the non-human life forms that they claim are a danger. They use the forests as an erotic destination that they saturate with their “very limited” spraying. Follow this message and find out where it goes. The words are: “You are being poisoned. Mass death is accelerating from putting carbon in the atmosphere. You can no longer live your life as planned.” We follow this message as it enters the conscious life of billions of people. It goes into the eyes and ears and brain several times a day. Whether the message is read or heard or seen on the screen, the warning is understood. But then a curious thing happens. The words cohere in the mind, but are deleted before any action takes place. Where did the message go? Something happens between the information and the action, between the recognition of danger and the fight or flight. Repeatedly, we are paralyzed. Why? We continue to pretend that the Earth is not a conscious force; that it is not creating the events of our lives -- from a baby's first breath to the melting of the Himalayas... This is the reason that we are oblivious to the danger we are in. We can't image that the Earth is alive. We experience the natural world through the prism of our toxic dust and YouTube clips of lions devouring leopards. The average city dweller with a computer experiences 10,000 ads per day. Yes, there is the occasional super storm that pokes through our bubble, but the storms and floods aren’t thought of as coming "from an Earth". They are "natural disasters" -- mysterious uprisings of the elements, with no source at all. We wander on, as the ads circle us... and the Extinction accelerates. Learn more about your ad choices. Down here in the land of everyday life, our sorrow is real. Our feelings today are for the Ukrainians, the bewildered children, the families on the highway to the border, and we are even mindful of the young Russian soldiers. At Earth Riot Radio, we believe that the Earth is a living being with its with own feelings. Here on invasion day, we feel sorrow for all of life, and we wonder -- does the Earth have sorrow too? Nothing is more violent than war, for the Earth and for us all. The horror of war reawakens, a zombie history that cannot die. Every once in a while, activism for the Earth seems to go on pause. And the Earth in its apocalypse project also slows down its breathing and looks at the valley. There is a moment with no fires and floods… We are in that time now and we feel stranded with our activism. We don’t know how to style our confrontation with the fossil-scape. There are not many slow and long preparations now. The turns in the battle for life are sudden. The Earth is our guide, giving us our muscle and our music. Take a walk in a beautiful forest. The dying and being born is so constant that the place is flickering. We are like that now. Death is a part of life. It's like the sound of skidding tires when you know you are in a car accident. There is something comforting in the inevitability of it. The thing that makes us angry is that a bunch of gas and oil yahoos are making millions of bucks a day and we can't stop them but the Earth is stopping us. Learn more about your ad choices. And now we're home. The two rock-n-roll busses full of 25 singers were like ecstatic think-tanks all through our 7 city tour of the UK. What were we talking about? The Earth is very clear. All the religions have their year's end holy days but the Earth is telling all of us that we cannot kill others with our carbon heavy buying. Christmas presents are stuck in container ships. Macy's is going bankrupt. The Earth is doing this with fire and flood and virus. The Earth says: "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY A GIFT TO GIVE A GIFT. Our failure to mount a strong resistance to the Citi and BP, Blackrock and Exxon, HSBC and JPMorgan Chase - needs to top the agenda. This cannot continue because we won’t be able to continue…. 26 times the international climate conference has met? What if we stopped Big Oil in the early 90’s when it started? "The Leader of the Environmental Movement Has a Brain" is a show from a year ago that we are returning to today. Last week was our 70th show, and here is the number 35 show for this week's broadcast. We are busy preparing for our songs and sermons for our EARTH RIOT TOUR of the UK and COP26 in Glasgow (we're sending two shows from the road - the tour is Nov 1 to the 12th...). The nature of this tour to the "last chance climate conference" does make us want to review where we have been, how we got here...
Savitri D in the News from the Natural World, brings us from the dime-size Lilliputian Frog, to sea turtles endangered by plastics- all the way to Hump-backed Whales, from Charlene from the Stop Shopping Choir, talks in our interview about Donald Trump's macho disparagement of Hurricane Maria. In this episode there is the affirmation of the Earth's conscious being, and how the Earth directs our activism. Earthalujah! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
COP26 - we'll sing on the streets of Glasgow as if our songs will blow through the walls of police, as if the music will have a seat at the table of the billionaires as they refuse to stop their CO2 and methane. The Earth Movement has a move it must make very soon. We haven't created that galvanizing story for the Earth. Where is the concentrated drama? The Earth sends its super storms but still waits for its humans to bring the drama. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
COP26 is the object of an unprecedented avalanche of press releases which promise “Carbon Zero by 20______”. All the corporations are promising a complete turn around from the present cycle of production profit and waste. What do activists do now? The “End” is endless. The stalling goes on till death do us part. We need a new kind of Earth Activism. One where the mystical touch of the Earth is leading the way.

The shift in tactics is driven by the Earth - our most effective protester. Nobody says NO! to CO2 capitalism quite like a super storm. The “natural disasters” are political. They are messages, encouraging us to re-invent how we defend life on Earth and move into expressive politics beyond our old rallies and marches. The vividness of this current 6th Extinction makes us want to evolve into something new. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In the shadow of Hurricane Ida, we went out into the streets to talk to people. The common sense was more radical than we expected. Everyone is feeling trapped, so far from any ability to protect themselves from the super storms and fires. People seemed frustrated that they are in the middle of this city, so far from the natural world. They want to be closer to the Earth. We asked random strangers “What would you say if you got the mic in Glasgow at the climate conference?” The answers shared a plea that someone at COP26 represent them - and be personally braver in this dangerous time. Of course, Ida was an influence on this talk. Then again - we should always feel the nearness of the Earth. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
The strange deadly beauty of the show called "Extinction is Here" came to jaded New Yorkers last night and hey - we're impressed. Very impressed. But that's not enough. The Earth is the impresario here and the show called Extinction is extreme evolution. First of all, we can't just move to the country. Our memory of who we are needs to be free to travel farther than that. Who am I? Ida has erased my identity built out of cities and wars and pop tunes. We have never believed that the Earth tells stories, but we have no choice now; we must step into the plot of the 6th Great Extinction. We need to like the outlandish story-line and join up. And that is what we mean when we say “Wild Dreams of a New Beginning.”. It’s a phrase that was given to us by Lawrence Ferlinghetti, who passed away last March at the age of about a century. He was the sustainer of the Beat generation at his City Lights Books in San Francisco. As this Extinction overwhelms our lives, may we have that vision of the Earth that so many of his authors saw and celebrated. Earthalujah! Learn more about your ad choices. With the gov’t, corporations, army and church abandoning us, we have the Earth’s dangerous evolution as our future. This “flipping-over” could be a good thing. The Earth will break the hold of totalitarian consumerism on our psyches. New transformations will have us feeling and seeing the Earth throughout our life. The criminals are in suits and the peaceful Earth is just plain dangerous. Consumerism is totalitarian, with constant repetitions, screen staring and the overwhelming threat of boredom. Then a natural disaster hits and a crack of hope appears. 200 mph winds for a couple days can really work wonders. Even a billionaire in outer space can clear the air for a moment. But products rush to fill any vacuum. It would be nice if we could say to each other that the physical environment is really collapsing and we had better do something to save ourselves... but a product sponsor will interrupt. The Earth, though, is releasing so much energy now, an eery silence is inviting us forward.

I am a legitimate human being. You? You are evil unthinkable slime.” Each of the politicians says that about every other politician. It makes sense that here at the point of violence, we reach in our language a 3-ring circus of meaninglessness. We're working on a manifesto, a living document as guidance while the 6th Extinction rolls over us. There is not much teaching on the subject in a consumer society. Possibly our country is self-censoring because we want to monetize extinction but can't sell it. Is that why public figures give the Sixth Extinction the silent treatment? So we make up our own rules for living as the physical environment collapses around us. Our beliefs come from the common sense that can flourish in an imaginary community. So let's talk. How do we do this? Our manifesto needs to be like a clearing in a forest, a living document that updates as instantaneously as actual life. John Sims is an artist, and a dear friend of The Church of Stop Shopping. Recently, John was roused from sleep at 2 AM by three white cops entering his apartment with guns drawn. This took place in Columbia, SC., where his AfroDixia exhibit is now installed, and he is artist-in-residence.
John's speech to the Columbia City Council, in the days following the scare, is included in full in this radio show. The Columbia police chief claims to be a leader in working with people traditionally marginalized. And yet, he says the cops "followed department protocols". Really? Mistakenly entering a private bedroom and handcuffing the occupant is police policy? Police racism, toxic water and air, racist payment patterns from FEMA after storms, etc. etc... Black and brown people are subject to state-sanctioned violence which is often also crime against the Earth. Hell waits for the executives of Chase, Bayer, Exxon. These men don't get caught with blood on their hands. They fly in a permanent jet, above their victims, far away. After witnessing the final scene in the new ban of RoundUp in New York City parks, we can say: These tortured molecules that now saturate our eco-systems are like Robert E. Oh we mean BANNED. The Church of Stop Shopping and The Black Institute helped ban the carcinogenic pesticide RoundUp from NYC parks. On Earth Day, the NY City Council unanimously banned this poison. 1,700 parks and 30,000 acres of greenery are filling up with children and picnics and lovers and joggers and birdwatchers. Now they won’t have to risk getting cancer. (Monsanto invented Agent Orange, Bayer manufactured Zyklon B gas and ran a slave-labor factory at Auschwitz). Extinction is either believed to be fake science by the financial classes in the US, or it is their business plan. With the rise of trillionaire Jeff Bezos, the capitalist project in this country is taking the dumping of waste into the atmosphere to a new level of planet-heating recklessness. There’s a massive counter-intuitive job up ahead, a gift from the Earth that we can’t refuse. The extinction is a mysterious process of death and life, and it is not a product. It is not culture-friendly, not in consumer society. We have never believed that the Earth can produce stories, but we must step into the story of The Sixth Extinction. We need to like the story-line and join up. Since the industrial revolution, especially in its Silicon Valley form, we haven’t known how to communicate with to the Earth. We are in danger of reducing modern civilization to a lonely masturbation, with special effects offering us vivid delusions. But the Earth runs things now. The Sixth Extinction is underway and it is accelerating. But even talking about extinction is hard. It seems to be a subject beyond words. That is the opportunity. That is the starting point. Tenderness, loyalty, empathy, collective memory, giving… let’s just call all of that Love. Love can take us beyond our existing words to where language and meaning come from. The violence in the holiday sale is unseeable. The comforts and conveniences are a force field that scrambles our reception of the holy days. The design flaw in the beautiful machine of America is extinction, and we activists haven’t figured out how to dis-encrypt the message of the Earth that blows through us like hopeless love, like the last howling high notes of the animals that are entering death. Quotes from this week's Earth Church: 1) Earth to Humans: Start Your Apocalypse. - 2) To survive: All evidence points to the need for a quasi-religious transformation. - 3) We will leave behind piles of pixels and paper. Careerism is over. - 4) We built our sophistication behind 300 years of carbon. - 5) Can we break through convenience? Covid says yes that is possible. - 6) Children! We gotta teachable moment like a tsunami! - 7) Let's take the Fabulous Unknown from the Night Sky and Put it on our Hearts! - 8) We might have to turn into birds, like the dinosaurs did. That might be OK. - 9) If we survive Consumerism, then we lock arms at the cliff's edge, and get set to Evolve. - 10) We're jumping into the abyss shouting LIFEALUJAH! LIFEALUJAH! LIFEALUJAH! ---- The director of the Church of Stop Shopping is Savitri D in New York. The Fiery Eagles of Justice are Brendan Burke (drums) & Jason Candler (sax). I mean, we've done everything we could. For the holidays, we stopped shopping. We don't drive. We turn off Zoom. That's what she wanted, right? Does she have compassion for us? We dive deeper and deeper into a smaller and smaller number of people. We are in the last room with this forced embrace of loved ones. We are here in a great city that doesn't make a sound. We wait. A bright yellow dirigible floats by in the window. It pulls a big sign: "CHANGEALUJAH! Love, COVID" ---- The director of the Church of Stop Shopping is Savitri D in New York. “Greatness” is supposed to describe unstoppable power. But people don’t have that anymore, the Earth is the power. Kings and Queens always insisted that they got their instructions straight from God. That arrogance still bears evil fruit in companies like Bayer, Chase, and Amazon, converting their pollution into cash. As Donald Trump suffers the humiliation of his “Emperor Has No Clothes” moment, we look to the Earth for our leadership. The current accelerating evolution is turning this macho strutting into something small that flies and sings. The politicians will go down insisting that climate change is just another “issue.” The machinery of denial will disappear in fire and flood, disease and starvation. But we are Earth-lovers in the Stop Shopping Church. We believe that there is a place for humans even this late in the apocalypse. That place is the Amazon Fulfillment Center, where the votes for our suffering and death are cast, as every seven days 1M metric tons of CO2 is spewed into the air, making it the dirtiest retail company in the US. Cast you protest vote at the distribution centers. Stop the Amazon jets and trucks! Evolvalujah! ---- The director of the Church of Stop Shopping is Savitri D in New York. Gaia theory says that the Earth is a conscious living being. Many people sense that this is true, but we think of her thoughts as impossible for us to understand. We think of nature’s intelligence as not of the logical or strategic sort. But why? It seems as if the bio-sphere of the planet is more involved in the elections than the Russians. The unprecedented pandemic and storms and fires – all derided by Trump’s tweets – are triggering responses in Americans on a basic common sense level. We can’t imagine what will happen after the election. We can’t dream of what will follow the pandemic. All the old optimism, the hope for a good future, is gone. The reason: When Trump and the virus are history, we will still be continuing our mindless civil war. All these years the happy hate has distorted our lives, until it blends seamlessly into our language. We think its normal. But hate never stops working. It rewards its victims with a kind of pleasure, then treats its hosts to a very special blindness, in which prosperity & freedom is mistaken for the enormous undertaking of mass suicide. For how long have we been killing the life that gives us life? The impossible healing must start now. ---- The director of the Church of Stop Shopping is Savitri D in New York. We are trying to hold the blurring deadly motion back by labeling it and selling it, like the way we use super tragedies as programming between ads for tough trucks. For many years now, the modern economy has replaced everything that was disappearing, like wilderness areas, with virtual reality versions in video games, museum dioramas, etc. But the wilderness grew more and more silent. Then the trillionaires launched their ‘baby earth’, the ultimate product, a gated planet beyond the fire and flood and virus. The surprise was that millions of people appeared with the wilderness inside them. ---- The Stop Shopping Choir’s music director is Nehemiah Luckett. The mass death now underway will only accelerate if we believe that that super storm over there is a mechanical malfunction, and this pandemic over here is only the absence of a vaccine and that wildfire over there is a failure to mop and rake California.... All the so-called natural disasters come from one source, which is a living being that is struggling to live through an extinction wave. The spinning wet blue and white ball in space is a life. We were supposed to be a participant. If we want the Earth to survive then we have to know her strategies and help her. The now rolling-toward-us Apocalypse is very real, but the author of the storms and wildfires is the Earth, and so there’s love in the message that is raining down on us. We are modern humans, what can I say? Not much. Worse yet, we can’t listen or hear or love. We need the Earth that we have inside us to rise up, dancing, singing – yes thats it!! The habit of hate, the back and forth cursing from climate and other culture war issues, needs out attention. Why is hate feeling so good? We all deny that we hate, but then we go back to denying our enemy’s basic humanity. Separating the kinds of mother love leaves us listless, de-politicized, anxious, empty. Who and why? The chosen people did it. The police did it. The butler did it. The corporate people spied a profit center in that love. As the violent events multiply, we begin to talk about the criminal in a new way. The villain is sick, bitter, a Devil. We just don't know what to do with our dream of thousands of disasters rushing over us. Why? Who? We haven't let ourselves reply to all this out-of-scale carnage. We aren't naming things, or making meaning, or even music. We are changing so completely that change isn't the word. Extinction is either believed to be fake science by the financial classes in the US, or it is their business plan. With the rise of trillionaire Jeff Bezos, the capitalist project in this country is taking the dumping of waste into the atmosphere to a new level of planet-heating recklessness. I use the "urban hipster" as my example of the self-erotics of consumption, but of course enablers of the mass killing now accelerating have many styles. There is a line penned by Savitri D in our song "We Surround You" - which is about the revenge expressed by animals killed by extinction. "You take the names of what you kill. We will gradually, step by step, emerge from our lockdown, and hopefully uncover our faces and draw closer and touch. The defense against he pandemic has become symbolic of our powerlessness and financial terror in the face of aggressive institutions. We are suffering a separation from each other, and from public space, and from each other in public space. But if and when the virus sets us free, we must use the lessons of care-giving that we learned during this terrible time to defend ourselves from the flood of products, religions, credit schemes, conjobs of all kinds - that are bound to target us.
