Celtic Pink Floyd is a project that's been around for going on two decades now and a lot of very talented musicians have been involved from the beginning. Throughout all iterations, performances, and albums: brothers Damon & Brian Stout have been at the core and Patrick D'Arcy has been sprinkling traditional flavors over every arrangement.

The brothers & Pat join me on the show to talk about the CPF project in general, about the next, "stripped-down," iteration of the group, and to share with us a brand new track from the group, putting their own spin on the Duran Duran classic: Winter Marches On.

Tune into this episode to count all the Floyd puns we caught, and to see how many missed potential puns you can spot!

Robert Macdonald came on the show back in January of 2024. We talked then about his bagpipe journey, his music making with Pennyland, and more -- including the fiddle playing & tune-making of Cape Breton fiddler John MacDougall.

The most recent episode (136: Music from the Dead, The Tune-Making of John MacDougall by Robert Macdonald) was an, "audiobook," you might say, of what Robert wrote about John MacDougall's work after spending time with him in Cape Breton in 2009.

Robert Macdonald came on the show back in January of 2024. We talked, then, mostly about his music making with Pennyland.

We talked a bit about his scholarly work on the compositions of fiddler John MacDougall, though, and ever since I've been wanting to dig a bit more into that.

This episode is an, "audiobook," you might say, of what Robert wrote about John MacDougall's work after spending time with him in Cape Breton in 2009.

With around 40 books published to date, Stuart combine the roles of writer, storyteller and lecturer in Scottish history, folklore and geomythography. Additionally, Stuart has had a fair amount of poetry published and for many, many years worked as a musician. For 30 years he has been teaching at the University of Edinburgh's Centre for Open Learning and has also been visiting schools as a storyteller, as well as focusing as a writer on history, folklore and the Scots language. I was the first Director of the Scots Language Centre in Perth and am a founding member and past-President of the Pictish Arts Society. Over the years Stuart has worked extensively in radio and more sporadically in television. In the theatre, I have produced/directed and performed, in shows on Radical Song, Songs and Stories of the Jacobites and others. Stuart has appeared at many book (and storytelling) festivals and events in Scotland, England, Ireland, Sweden and Australia.

Tune into this episode to hear us liken hills & restaurant logos to human anatomy.

Stuart's books are all over the internet, including Amazon and other retail sites. Here's an option: https://booksfromscotland.com/bfs-author/stuart-mchardy/

  • Use this as a model (of what to do or of what not to do) and record yourself prepping for a gig, writing a tune, etc and send it in to be featured on a future episode
  • Also, I'm launching Verdant Musical Instruments (in future I'll update these notes so there'll be a link right here) starting with pennywhistles in A, Bb, C, D, and Eb
    • Verdant will benefit Peace Through Music International
      • Here's the episode where PTMI's founder, Liz, came on the show: Ep. #82
      • Here's their website: https://www.peacethroughmusicinternational.org/
      • Here's the album we made to benefit PTMI when we hit 100 episodes: Ep #112

Tune into this episode to hear a whole lot of rambling and the summary of six months' dreams come puttering to a non-conclusion...

Hello friends!

As if two episodes in a row of (mostly) monologues weren't enough -- this week what I have for you is chapter two of this 123-year-old book about bagpipes.

The chapter heading reads as follows:

Ancient musical instruments - Priestly harpers - Hereditary harpers - Irish versus Scottish harpers - Royal harpers - Use of harp universal - Welsh sarcasm - Mary Queen of Scots' harp - The last of the harpers - "The Harper of Mull" - From harp to pipes - the Clarsach - Pipes supplanting bards - The last clan bard - Bardic customs - Bards' jealousy of pipes - The bard in battle - Duncan Ban Mac Intyre - Two pipers scared - When the pipes became paramount - The fiery cross - The Coronach

If you missed chapter 1, it's provided as Episode 105

Hello my good friends - I hope you'll forgive me, between being sick and getting the celebratory, "Pipes for Peace," album out into the world I have not had time to craft a, "real," episode for this week.

What you'll find here, instead, is the album promo I recorded for Big Rab this morning - and that's just all my voice could do. I'm afraid it's really taking a long time to get back to 100% healthy. That's been stitched-together with the episode 82 interview with Liz, the founder of Peace Through Music International.

If you have the time and inclination, please do check out the album. It has a lot of great music on it, the money goes to support a great cause, and the prizes we have for the St. Patrick's Day drawing are truly great as well.

Here's the album: https://droningon.bandcamp.com/album/pipes-for-peace

Here's info about Peace Through Music International: https://www.peacethroughmusicinternational.org/

And here's a list of the prizes on-offer:

-Guitar accessory pack from D'Addarrio

-Kelpie Whistle from MK Whistles

-MK Stealth II practice chanter (in Torpedo Case) from Maverick

-Lots of different whistles (including GHB-fingering whistles) from Generation

-Online bodhran course from Blayne Chastain

-A tune workshop from Get Bagpipe Ready

-Giftcards for BagpipeSwag.com

And... I think that's it... I need a nap...

We did this interview over a year ago, but because of various things (software changes, scheduling needs for other episodes, audio repair work, etc) it's been uber-delayed coming out. At this point, he may have even forgotten ever doing the interview! And actually, since doing the interview, I got to meet with Mark in-person and the guy even let me try his really nice flute! Put very simply: Liz helps people, especially kids, effected by war. She does so through music. She uses a lot of penny whistles to do this.

I hope you'll enjoy this conversation, I really enjoyed talking with Liz and learning about what her organization does to help people effected by war around the world.

(HEADS UP: some dark/heavy things come up in this conversation, just FYI, the kind of stuff that goes right along with war, i.e. death, rape, suffering, etc)

A far more detailed description of what the charity does is, (pulled from their website):

Our mission Our mission is to transform the lives of war impacted children and adolescents through locally-run, youth-led music education programs.

As the refugee crisis around the globe hits unprecedented levels, Peace through Music International is striving to improve the lives of some of the world’s most vulnerable citizens through music. Since 1999, the organization has brought its programs to 20,000 children and taught 95,000 classes.

Objectives Responding to the needs of our target population and expert findings, our programs are designed to meet these objectives:

Address participants’ war-related and poverty-related emotional trauma and developmental needs.

  • Provide consistent, long-term music education that includes daily practice and opportunities for performance
  • Provide free instruments and all class materials
  • Provide structured opportunities for play, learning, group interaction, self-discipline, and self-expression
  • Provide a positive emotional outlet to youth and children through songs and activities
  • Provide a safe place for children to feel love and belonging
  • Provide hope and meaning in a post-war culture of indifference, apathy and hopelessness

Establish volunteer and leadership opportunities for youth to gain skills for future employment.

  • Generate opportunities for tangible accomplishment
  • Empower youth volunteers to become positive local role models for children
  • Build problem-solving and cognitive skills
  • Develop professional communication skills
  • Teach punctuality, accountability, preparation and responsibility and integrity

Reduce vulnerability to extremist group participation and human trafficking. Prevent youth violence, crime, and drug and alcohol abuse.

  • Create positive peer networks
  • Provide positive role models
  • Incorporate drug and alcohol prevention in curriculum
  • Provide diversionary educational and cultural programs
  • Empower youth to develop a positive identity through shared experiences and friendship
  • Help youth recognize that as they change the lives of the children they teach, they have the power to change their communities and the world

Cultivate tolerance, empathy, and socialization among hostile communities

  • Create opportunities for communication, cooperation, and understanding among ethnic, religious, and divided communities

Unique program backed by research and expert findings In a study measuring the success of our program's effect on refugee children published in the American Psychological Association's Traumatology Journal, entitled, Children After War: A novel approach to promoting resilience through music, researchers discovered the following:

  • Children who participated in the program reported reduced symptoms of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
  • Overall, children who participated in the program at least 1 year evidenced fewer affective and cognitive disturbances than children recently enrolled.
  • The results of the correlation analyses demonstrated that students who had been in the program longest exhibited the fewest signs of emotional, psychological, and cognitive disruption.
  • Cognitive stimulation, promotion of attention and focus through the process of learning musical instruments and songs, social support from peers in a nontraditional classroom setting, the community-sustained infrastructure, and/or the message of peace and communal unity promoted by the program leaders likely all contribute to the outcomes evidenced by this study

Also among the documented results of our programming are significantly improved rates of secondary school completion and college attendance. Among our Kosovo youth volunteers, for example, 100% complete primary and secondary school, as compared to fewer than 40% of children in Kosovo at large. More than 90% of our Kosovo volunteers went on to attend college, as compared to 33% of high school graduates across Kosovo.

Tim is a unique guy living a unique life doing unique things - bagpipery and otherwise! I feel really bad I had to rush this interview. A rare thing I usually try to plan to not do, but there were some technical difficulties on the day of recording that not only restricted our conversation time, they also forced me to use a different platform and hardware than I usually do, and it was all rather a hasty last-minute plan-B arrangement. Therefore: I do apologize for the somewhat, "roomy," audio on my half of the conversation. But there's no reason to be paying attention to that half of the conversation anyway, Tim's got a lot of cool and interesting ideas, experiences, etc and we just got a taste in this interview - here's to another interview with Tim in the near future! In the meantime, enjoy!

It's a three-episode month!

It was a delight to get to know Scott during this episode - in spite of living in the same part of the country and having a lot of mutual friends, Scott and I had never spoken before this interview.  He's a long-time bagpipe, a long-ago accordion, and he's one of the very, very few people in the world who can say he works for a railroad in Nebraska, USA.

One half of the, "Wheezer & Squeezer," duo, ( https://wheezerandsqueezer.com/ ) Jeremiah McLane plays a bellows-blown reed instrument, but it ain't bagpipes... but he plays along with bagpiper Timothy Cummings. It's often (delightfully) surprised me how many pipers also play accordion, or want to play accordion, so I thought talking with an accordionist would be fun - especially one with so much experience making music with bagpipers.

Jeff has returned! You may well remember him from his excellent shortbread recipe and more in past episodes - today he's come back to share some background about & recordings of four familiar holiday tunes that fit on the pipes!Several of the recordings you'll hear in this episode are based on Timothy Cummings' settings in his holiday collection available here:https://birchenmusic.com/product/on-this-day-earth-shall-ring-printed-collection/

Tune into this episode to hear James misplace yet another Shakespeare quote!

The recording of Veni, Veni is from an arrangement my good buddy Scot, (also a past guest of the show,) did for organ to accompany pipes. It was interesting: we used a Bb chanter and tuned the bass drone up to C, so it came out in c-minor. There's a video of the performance, (from which we pulled the audio in this episode,) available here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InlnMudvXJE

If you've ever been impressed by production quality in a penny whistle tutorial on YouTube, you were probably watching Sean. A self-proclaimed, "recovering highland bagpiper," Sean joins me to talk about whistles & why, (I'm sure,) all pipers and drummers should pick up a whistle.

Tune into this episode to hear Sean extol that ever-popular musical genre: Elf Metal.

Ross needs no introduction, I’m sure. He’s an amazing piper, whistler, tunesmith, and I hear he’s a decent baker as well!

Along with the totally-talented Brìghde Chaimbeul and the superbly-skilled Steven Byrnes, Ross has gifted us with another unique collection of music in the new album, “LAS”. For C-Smallpipe enthusiasts everywhere, this has been much-anticipated, as Brìghde and Ross did the whole thing on C-smallpipes. And whether you care a lot about the key of the pipes or it makes no difference to you at all: this album is a horizon-broadening, joy-bringing, excitement-inducing musical trip and I could not recommend it enough. In the last 48hrs I think I’ve listened it through some 9 times, and some of the tracks, (especially The Badger & The Weasel,) many more times than that, and it’s not getting old in any way. Stream it, buy it, share it with friends - get copies to hand out for the Holidays, this is good music.

Tune into this episode to hear Ross totally shut-down my suggestion that World’s ought to include a Grade 1 Cabaret Competition…

Here are the links! As of today, there’s a single track of the album available, but the whole album will drop on September 2nd.

Dr. Camille Ausbroad is a Professor of nearly everything at a local University on the tiny island she calls home somewhere on the underside of the globe. I don't know, it's not America.

For those who don't already know: she's a maker of many things - one of the most recent, a book which she co-authored with Andrew Douglas of Piper's Dojo fame. The book, "Finding Bagpipe Freedom," is available for purchase and let me just go ahead and say it: it'd make a great Christmas gift for you and for someone you love. So grab a few copies today at this link right here!

Tune into this episode to hear an Australian say, (surely not for the first time,) "what the f--- is a Blooming Onion?"

*Oh, and keep in mind: as a general rule there are some words which, though not commonplace in American English casual conversations, drip - nay - flow freely in the Aussie vernacular... consider that a content warning...

Jeremy Kingsbury is a talented highland, uilleann, border, scottish-small, and otherwise piper. He also plays various whistles, jaw harp, and sundry - plus he speaks Ojibwe, hosts the world's first bagpiping podcast, and is probably a time-traveller.

Jeremy, (a.k.a. Wetootwaag,) hosts an excellent podcast where he explores the likely repertoire of eighteenth and early nineteenth century bagpipers, using historic music collections (written for bagpipes or not), and he performs tunes from these collections on Uilleann pipes, Highland pipes and whistles, along with occasional guest musicians.

In this episode we talk about, (and listen to,) a few tracks from an album Jeremy's recent album of awesome old tunes - I highly recommend checking it out: Oyster Wives Rant

What kind of drum did that boy play? Also: what was that mother thinking, letting a drummer play anywhere near a newborn?

You're about to find the answers to these questions, plus you'll learn to make shortbread from the very best - Jeff McClellan! (and he doesn't only bake bread - he also sings Bread!)

Tune in to this episode to hear Heidi say, "I, like you, thought that [the Von Trapps & Narwals] were fake..."

Follow along from your own kitchen:

Scottish Shortbread Recipe

Traditional, adapted by Jeff McClellan from various sources

Ingredients

  • 1 cup packed brown sugar (I reduce to 2/3 cup; still plenty sweet)
  • 1 lb. butter, softened
  • 4-4.5 cups flour (half white flour; half oat flour)

Directions

  1. In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.

  2. Most recipes use white sugar; I use brown sugar; I also reduce the amount of sugar to 2/3 cup just to limit my sugar.

  3. Add any desired flavors or mix-ins.

  4. Tradition would keep it to the three ingredients, but you can spice it up if you wish.

  5. Flavorings (add before the flour): maple, almond, cinnamon, vanilla (about a teaspoon, depending on how strong you want the flavor)
  6. Mix-ins (add after the flour): dried fruits, nuts (perhaps chocolate chips?)

  7. Add 3-3.5 cups of flour a little at a time and mix well.

  8. In early days, shortbread would have been made with oat flour; later wheat flour replaced oat flour.

  9. I like to use a combination of half white flour and half oat flour. For the oat flour, I put a bunch of oats in the blender and grind them up. The oat flour makes the cookies a little more dense, increases the crumbly texture a bit, and adds a slightly nutty flavor.
  10. If you use all oat flour, the cookies will be gluten free.

  11. Turn onto a floured surface and knead well, adding enough of the remaining flour to form a soft dough.

  12. Roll to 0.5" thickness and form into desired shapes and texture.

  13. There are three traditional shapes, but the firm dough will hold any shape well:

    • Fingers are made by forming a large rectangle from the dough and cutting it into strips about 3" x 1"
    • Petticoat tails are made by shaping the dough into a large circle and then cutting it like a pie; you can pinch the outer edge to give it a scalloped edge.
    • Rounds are just small circles of dough.
  14. Add decorative texture by pricking the cookies with a fork to make holes; some people use molds to shape the cookies.

  15. Place the shortbread pieces 1" apart on ungreased baking sheets.

  16. Bake at 325° for 30-40 minutes or until the cookies are lightly browned.

Yield: About 4 dozen.

Daniel Neises describes some of the general characteristics of Polish sacred song: “Polish religious songs are a distinct repertory of congregational songs composed in the vernacular and in a musical idiom derived from Polish folk music. They are typically strophic, monophonic, and are characterized by asymmetrical time signatures and ambiguous modality which commonly oscillates between major, minor, and modal qualities.” https://www.umcdiscipleship.org/resources/history-of-hymns-infant-holy-infant-lowly-1
