Make the most of your motivation, the best way to release your music in 2023 is to plan it out ahead of time, when motivation is at its peak!
Download the music release plan template https://www.dottedeight.com/artist
Once we've released the music we move on to the next thing. we no longer feel like posting about it, we feel like we've posted too much about our new release, or we don't want to bother people anymore with it. So... We end up with great plans that were never executed.I suggest in this video that you plan out your entire release during your peak of motivation, this will most likely be the weeks prior to release, when your super excited! When you're itching to for people to hear it!
If you're able to, automation the process as well, so you can get out of your own way, and make sure the promotion happens, regardless of how you feel.

It's hard to find the best way to release your music in 2022. Gone are the days when you can just record your song or video and put that out a a single release. While I think we should have a 'main' release, we should also be utilising the multiple content release strategy.
FREE ARTIST RESOURCES: https://www.dottedeight.com/artist
This doesn't have to get overwhelming and expensive though, It can be as simple as chopping your release up into a bunch of smaller bite size pieces for release on algorithm platforms like TikTok and Instagram, but can also mean shooting new small videos or soundbites that show off your music release in a different and interesting way. The goal is to give people opportunities to connect with your music, and become life long fans.

Creating the vibe during your songwriting stage will help you point you in the right direction. I believe it will help you to finish writing your songs, not just start writing your songs. I've been songwriting like this for a while now, and the clear direction it provides makes it a really valuable songwriting technique, and should certainly be one of your favourite tools to write a song. From here you can write a melody, you can write chords, you can write rhythms, and you can write harmonies

Coming up with lyric ideas! how do you come up with fresh lyrics over and over? I have a simple technique that will get you endless inspiration for new lyrics, allowing you to tap into the kind of deep emotion that your audience can really connect with, and ultimately write better songs.
SONGWRITING DOWNLOAD - https://www.dottedeight.com/artist
The technique explores the emotion of an existing character in a book or movie. Because they are experiencing specific circumstances created to trigger emotion. We can take that powerful emotion and write our story from there.

Writing good lyrics is one of the most important skills in songwriting, and working on that skill of writing lyrics will make you a better songwriter. In this video I unpack a popular song by Billy Joel, and look at the clever way he writes lyrics to connect with his audience, its about giving them enough of the lyrics, that they can finish the song off in their own head. This is powerful songwriting.
I would love to help you out with your songwriting, help you to write better lyrics, and generally help you become the best music artist you can be. Please reach out to me if I can help at all.

What content does your audience want to see? How should you use social media as a music artist?
Sam Holland is absolutely brilliant at creating content, and shares his insight in this episode. He mentioned that posting a lot was important, today he defines what that means, and talks about posting the right sort of content. He always breaks down the art of taking one idea and turning that into multiple sources of value for your audience.

Those stages are Vision/Branding, Playing Live, Songwriting, Recording, and Promotion.
I had the pleasure of getting alongside Robbie Mortimer for this entire process for his latest album, and I share what I learn't with you here.

What's the best way to release music in 2021? We have more resources and more opportunity then ever before. I have been really following Ed Sheeran's latest release journey leading up to his new album =. It's been fascinating to see the sheer amount of content he's been able to pump out in support of his singles, and now album. In this video I take a look specifically at the strategy around releasing his music videos. I reckon you could implement some of these techniques in your music to connect and engage with more listeners

Good songs need good melodies. So how do you write a good melody? The great thing about creativity is that there is more then one way to do it. Today I'm exploring 3 ways to start your next melody. three different ways to get the ball rolling, The first two you've probably tried before, the 3rd one I reckon will be something new for you.
This video is for a music artist stuck for inspiration, or for somebody who find all their melodies are sounding the same, and you need to break the mould a bit

It's easy to hate Spotify and feel like they are ripping you off as a music artist. And perhaps you're right! But what if we just looked at Spotify and Apple Music in a different way? What if we just used it as a powerful marketing tool, and then created personalised music experiences for our audience as a way to earn an income from our music.
I discuss the latest proposed changes for the Spotify royalty payouts, and some ways you can use the platform to move your music forwards

Connecting with your audience in a real and genuine way is probably the most important aspect of being a music artist, perhaps only second to creating music that actually means something to you.
This week I had a chat with music artist Clinton Hoy, because he understands and puts this concept into practise better then probably any one Iâve seen.
From our chat I reckon youâll pick up the following things;
1. The importance of being able to connect with your fans
2. Some strategies that actually work
3. Itâs a lot easier then you may think

A common question for the music artist is 'should I try get signed to a record label, or should I stay independent?' I came across some research this week put together by the digital distribution company 'Gyrostream' who surveyed a ton of artists with this very question. I found the results fascinating! They then dove deeper into the question and survey why music artists want to sign to record labels, and why music artists want to remain independent.
In this episode I discuss all the stats, alongside the pro's on con's of signing to a record label, and staying independent as a music artist.

Getting signed to a record label is such an attractive idea for the music artist. Why? Because the labels know the music industry, and the have access to the audiences we want to be in front of.
Maybe it's not a label you're looking for, maybe it's just music publication or some sort of professional music representation. So what exactly do you need in order to get noticed by these guys? I explain 3 basic concepts in this episode
1. Gathering momentum by creating music
2. Building your online presence with quality music experiences
3. Growing an audience.
Do these three things well, and you're on your way to attracting that record label attention.

What do we actually need on our music website? We talked about having a key purpose for your site, and how that should take the focus. But what are all the other common website features we should be using.
I think your website should be able to answer these 3 questions for your audience
1. Who are you?
2. Where can I find you?
3. How can I connect?
This episode chats through these questions and the appropriate website features to make sure theyâre answered effectively.

We might think that growing our socials is more important than building out a website. While socials are probably the best tool for generating interest and gaining followers, your website is your opportunity to turn those followers into fans. And it's the fans that ultimately buy your music, and fund your career.
In this episode of from musician to artist I lay out a ton of benefits to the music artist website, and show you a bunch of practical tips around setting up your site to grow your fanbase and build genuine connection with those fans.

It's super scary to walk into the studio and show the engineer your song. Pitching to the producer!
I've seen this battle from both sides, I've been an artist pitching my music, and I've also had hundreds of artists play me their song for the first time before we begin recording.Â
This episode is all about the role of the producer, what are they thinking while you're pitching your song. How can they help you? and how can you grow in confidence so that this process gets easier and easier?

I sat down with local artists Megan Woods, to chat about her goals! We discovered that her main goal for the next three months was to get her website published and working for her. So in this episode we ran this goal through the SMART goal method to make sure this goal is; SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE, ACTIONABLE, REALISTIC, & TIME BOUND. Checking your goal against these guidelines ensures your goal can be reached, and helps give you the motivation to go about achieving it. We also chat about about a few potential obstacles that may come up, and brainstorm ways to get around them.

Should your studio recording match your live performance? This is a common question I work through with artists in the studio all the time. Weighing up that natural approach that feels honest, vs the produced approach that enhances your music and gives you a more polished result.
Like everything creative, I don't think there's a right and wrong, but there certainly is an ideal way for YOU to go about recording your music depending on what you want to achieve with your recording.
In this episode I do a full break down of the two approaches and breakdown the pros and cons for each, so you can decide the best way forward for your music.

Lockdowns are extremely tough on the music artist. When venues close down, love music is the first thing to go! It seems like an uncertain road back to the regular, dependable gig.. So what can we do to make sure our music survives the lockdown? How can we lock down proof our music, and keep walking forwards when the world around us stops? Thats what I'm chatting about in this episode.
This is taken from a live stream I hosted last week in the middle of a lockdown we had here, and it's a god conversation, I think it will help you out a lot, and hopefully bring you some encouragement, and a way forward.
In this episode you will learn
1. How to have a go getter approach to your music
2. The importance of getting your music online
3. How to build a platform that you're in control of.

Music videos are a great way to grow your audience. Video is such an engaging form of media, and it's set up to work across pretty much all of the social platforms. It's much, much easier to get someone to watch your video, then to go across to Spotify and listen to your music.
I've been getting into video a lot lately, and I really believe in it's power to grow your music and your fan base. So I wanted to unpack a little bit about them, and cover some of the different types you could consider using for your music.
In this episode you'll learn.
- Why video is the best form of media
- Which type of video is right for you and your journey
- That great video is more achievable than you thought

I'm privileged to be able to work with a ton of great songwriters, and work on a lot of great songs here in the studio. This has helped me to see what makes a great song, and what takes away from a great song. While it's difficult to simply teach, 'how to write a good song' or 'how to write a hit song'. I can teach about a few common songwriting mistakes I see, and talk about how you can avoid them in your songwriting. This will be a big step towards writing more professional sounding song.

Donât stop âbeingâ thankful, but we need to shift our responses from simply being âthank youâ Iâm talking about reply to comments on your social posts (Facebook, instagram, or YouTube comments). Somebody writes in a tells you how much they love your new song, the easiest response is âthank you so muchâ. What we donât realise is that this is killing the conversation! Itâs not giving us a chance to grow that relationship and build connection with an appreciative audience, nor is it allowing Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube to pick up our content as an engaging post and put it in front of more people.
In this episode I have a look at how we should handle positive comments to start and engaging conversation, build and grow connection, and spike the platform algorithm to get further reach from out posts.

A question I get asked all the time is 'how do I get my music on Spotify' or 'can you help me get my music on to Spotify' So in this video I do exactly that. I explain the entire process, and share my screen as upload a song to Spotify and Apple Music.
The process seems daunting because it's different to everywhere else we upload, Instagram or YouTube we just upload our music or video and we're in control. For Spotify we're having to pay an aggregator (a digital distributor) to do that for us. In this video I explain what that distributor does, and why we need them.
The digital distribution company talk about in this video are
Gyrostream
Tunecore
CD Baby
Ditto
Distro Kid

I wanted to highlight James in this 'Artist Wins series because he just has such a good attitude around being an independent artist. He's willing to put in the work, he has realistic goals, and he's super proactive in his approach to achieving them. I explain my full recording process! From preproduction through tracking / recording, editing, mixing and mastering. What is the engineer / producer doing? And what can you (the artist) expect during the recording process.
Every studio will probably approach this slightly differently, this is a detailed unpacking of how I approach recording so that you can get a clearer picture of what happening behind closed doors. I've learned through years of working with artists that when this recording process is explained up front, it relaxes the artist, you know what you're up for, you know where you're heading, and you can trust the process and the engineer / producer.
If you're sitting on the fence unsure of whether you should hit the recording studio or not, This walk through should help teach you all you need to know about the entire recording process, from pre production all the way through to the finished master

I've been really enjoying the immersive experience from spatial audio through my Nuraphones, and I'm sure you will as well. Is it the game changer though? Will this supersede the traditional stereo audio? I think we'll have to wait and see.Â

How do I write my artist bio? Probably a question you've asked yourself right? Well how do you go about writing a good artist bio? Where do we need our music bio? Instagram, Spotify, Youtube, EPK.. It's almost everywhere.
I notice a lot of artists find it easier to write in the the 3rd person, because it's difficult to talk yourself up all the time. While there are good benefits for this, in this episode I chat about the best places to use third person, and why it might be more beneficial to for you to be writing in the first person, and engaging with your audience, inviting them in to be a part of your music journey.

Should I record at home? Or should I be hitting up a pro studio? For a lot of us this is one of those burning questions. We hear of a lot of artists getting great sounding recordings from home, we know the gear is relatively cheap, and it's fun!Â
I am certainly not against home studios, and recording from home, I think there is absolutely an opportunity for that! and sometimes it makes good sense to record from home! I also know the benefits of studio recording and what that can bring to your sound. So this is episode is a good old comparison.
I dive into
- When you should record from home
- The limitations of recording from home
- What the studio can offer
- Some hybrid methods to do both and save a ton of money!

It's almost less about your music, and more about the experience you can offer with your music. It's actually almost all about giving/selling your fans an experience.
These include; Recorded music, streamed or physical, Playing live shows (Big or intimate) Selling merchandise, Live streams, Music videos (story and performance), Song stories, Early access, Online live interactions, Behind the scenes videos, live hangouts and a couple more out of the box ideas.

What do your fans want? They want an experience with your music, they want to be able to feel something when they listen to your music. Perhaps they don't know that yet, but it's actually the feeling and connection we have with music that draws us in, and more importantly, keeps us wanting more.
In this episode I have a look at the creation cycle, step 1; we're inspired, step; 2 we physically produce that feeling or inspiration into song, then step 3, we allow other people to hear and connect with that song which completes the process. It's no good if we only do steps 1 & 2 then shelve it so that step 3 never happens. People need to hear/see and connect with what we've created.
This episode really dives into stage 3, so that we can double down on making sure our audience connects with our music, because once they do, you've got yourself a fan, and nurturing the relationship with that fan is the only way you're going to be able to make an income from your music. It's only when your fans are willing to trade their value (money) for the value you are offering with your engaging music experience that allows your to charge for your creation. Before that, everything we do or create, is just for fun.
So what is your product as a music artist?? It's an experience with your music. Thats what you're selling.

I love both YouTube and Spotify! I think they are both excellent content platforms. I wanted to do a comparison discussing some of the pros and cons around growing your audience on these platforms. Both Spotify or Youtube are great for having long lasting reach for your music, but both of them are a slow burn, requiring patience and planning when building them up. In this episode I chat about 3 main aspects of YouTube Vs Spotify;Â
1. Engagement Level
2. Available Content
3. Search ability
I don't think either platform is better then the other, But I hope this video helps you to decide and plan out what might work best for you and your music, as you try to build your audience.

Adding production elements to our songs can be a bit scary, where do we start? How do we learn these production tips? Because we know that production will help it sound complete! In this episode I chat about the importance of production, and that itâs a great way to tell the story of our music. In this episode I chat about how and where we should be adding these parts. Itâs all about writing a musical story, so that without focusing on the lyrics, our audience can still follow and connect with the journey of our song. The main objective here is to add appropriate tension, and release. Itâs building anticipation, and then satisfaction, so that we can pull our audience in and deliver that connection.

Lyrics are the most important part of our songs for a lot of our listeners. Some listeners are only listening to songs for their lyrics. Some of us love the music and the lyrics are a bonus, But we want to make sure our lyrics are firmly carrying our story so that our audience can get on our journey and connect with our music. In this episode I chat about what lyric content your different sections should have, as well as a few tips around effective lyric writing.
I also have a look at harmony. Harmony is two or more notes playing together, so for the most part, this is our chords. We can get so hung up on chords, and place unnecessary weight on them being unique and creative. For me, the role of a chord progression is really to make the melody sound amazing, they are a supporting role to the lead, (the melody) I have a quick look at where we can use different chords, and touch on where chords are providing different tensions.

Writing 'Inside the box' episode - https://youtu.be/_wTYOrst9pc
This is the second part of a four part series on songwriting. In the previous episode I looked at an approach to songwriting âinside the boxâ so that we can make sure our songs effectively carry our story and connect with the listener.
The melody is our tune, itâs the part that usually getâs stuck in our head. We want to make sure our melodies carry our mood, are engaging, have good flow, and provide natural lift and drop where the story needs it. I chat about a few ways we can make sure our melodies achieve this, and how we can set up a checkbox to make sure every future song makes the most of good melody.
The Rhythm carries so much of our feel, but often we just set and forget. Rhythm is broken down into divisions, from whole notes, through to 16th, 32nds, or faster depending on your genre. This episode talks about we can effectively use the different divisions throughout our song to carry the story line, bringing dynamics and movement to our song. Again setting up a checkbox to make sure we implement such movements every time we write.

This episode unpacks an approach to songwriting that makes the whole process easier. Itâs about setting up some guidelines around songwriting that ensures our songs connect with our audience by carrying our story effectively.
Songwriting Guide - https://www.dottedeight.com/artist
We understand the concept of thinking outside the box. This means coming up with something new right?
When we think about creativity and songwriting with this approach, we put a lot of pressure on ourselves. It could be the reason we havenât finished a lot of our songs! Because our idea isnât ever creative enough!
In this episode I look at a few examples of how creating inside a box, inside a set of guidelines, and to a brief, actually increases our creativity, and provides more effective results.
Then I unpack what I think is the most important aspect of effective songwriting, and that is structure. Structure carries the narrative of our song. Itâs the structure of our songs that makes sure our listeners are engaged with our story. A good structure will allow your songs to have the necessary tensions and releases that keep your audience invested in whatâs to come. All of our favourite movies have solid structure, as do our favourite books, and⊠All of our favourite songs!
If you download the free guide Iâve linked above, Iâve given a few examples of structures that work really effectively, and you can take those and implement them in your own songwriting.

Somehow Facebook likes, and Instagram follows have become the measure of success for music artists. But what is this actually doing for pushing our music brand forward? Building real fans, or paying for our music expenses.
In this episode I break down the numbers a bit, and look at what return on investment likes and follows actually bring. I look at the need for creating an inner circle that would actually nurture relationships that leads us towards being able to sell experiences with our music, whether that be tickets to our next show, some merch, or copies of our new music.
Understanding this concept is essential for making life as a music artists sustainable. It's this inner circle that will effectively fund your career, trading their value (money) for your value (a music experience)
I hope you get a stack from this episode, and that youâre able to implement some of the strategies here to grow your fanbase.
I Would love to know what you think of the concept, and please reach out if there is a way I can help you do this!

Weâre great at growing our online audience, putting up socials posts that drive traffic towards our new single or upcoming show. But how good are we at making sure our live audiences are following us on Instagram? Subscribing to our YouTube channel? Or engaging with us online.
My Linktree - https://linktr.ee/Dottedeightstudio
Create your own free Link tree - https://linktr.ee
I think the best way to make sure our live audience follows us digitally is by using a QR code. The QR code has become so common now and all the mystery has been removed from it. If fact your audience has already used the QR to get into the venue youâre playing at.
By using a QR code you remove all the friction involved in getting people to follow you on online. You no longer have to rely on your audience remembering to search for you, or spelling your name correctly, or sorting through all the tiny profile pics to find yours. A single scan and theyâre there!
So where should your code take you? The code takes you to a single URL. I suggest using Link tree. This is a single link that breaks out all your links into one place. That way the user can just make one click and arrive at your destination. You can then prioritise your links to make sure traffic lands where you want it to. Whats most important to you? Spotify? Instagram? Your website? Youtube? Put that link at the top of your link tree.
Your next move is to display this. I reckon be as creative as you can displaying your QR code! Make it look awesome, and people will be more likely to get involved, maybe a light box, or a great poster with your branding! Make it look awesome and add to your show.
Lastly, make sure you tell people about it! We canât rely on people taking initiative with this sort of stuff. We need to remind them and almost hold their hand. Maybe the first two times they think âyeah Iâll do that laterâ The third time âI have to do thatâ and they get up and do it. Tell them whatâs cool about your YouTube channel, or why they should be a part of your Instagram family, or that youâve got new music coming out soon. Give them a reason to join!
Your live audience is your warmest audience! These are the guys already committed to seeing you live, and theyâll be the movers and shakers inside of your social accounts, The already love you!

How do I promote my music? Or Whats the best way to promote my music online? These are questions we are trying to find answers to all the time. In this video I break down promoting out music, I look at the Why, The What, and the How.
Whether being part of your own marketing department is something you signed up for or not. Its something we have to develop and get better at as an independent assist
Why - Because no body else is going to do it for you. If you want to increase your fanbase and make sure that your music is falling on fresh ears, promotion is essential.
What - Obviously your music, but also yourself. Your music is apart of your brand, your personality and your character is the rest. So we need to combine our personality and character in our promotion. We are promoting ourselves, and our music is a part of that.
How - Socials is a great place to start. There is a large audience there ready to hear your music. But it canât start and end there, we need to be trying to move the audience from socials to our inner circle. Perhaps thatâs our Spotify profile, or maybe thatâs our YouTube channel. Ideally you want this to be something you own! Like your website or email inbox!

Obviously I need to record my music, but itâs expensive, and my songs are nowhere near being ready to record. What if it wasnât as far away as you thought it was? What if you could record your music and allow your audience to expand beyond the people in the same room as you? That way youâd appear like a real artist because you are an actual real artist! Recording your music, Lets talk about it
For enquires about how we could work together on your music head to my website https://www.dottedeight.com or email me at Studio@dottedeight.com
In this episode I look at 3 things around recording your music,
1. Where do you start? I think the most effective place to start is with a single. One song that you can get in, gain some experience in the studio, learn for your experience and struggles, and get better. This way you get a feedback from your audience quickly, and you lower the cost by not having to come up with a huge lump sum.
2. When do I know I ready? You donât have to have all the dots lined up, if you can play through the song, and you have a reasonable grasp of how you want it to go, I reckon youâre ready to record. Your producer/engineer will be able to assist you in getting it over the line. Both with their experience, and their access to quality session musicians.
3. What about recording from home? I say if you know what you are doing, go for it! Do as much as you can from home but just know your limits, know when its time to level up and get your project polished up by a professional who knows how to get you and your music results!
Hope you enjoy! Make sure you leave me a comment, let me know what you think about these concepts.

Itâs our songs that make an artist, itâs that expression that connects an audience through a range of emotions, and gives them something to hold and own. Letâs talk about effective songwriting as a music artist.
In this episode I unpack songwriting as stage 3 of the music artist life cycle.
Weâve already had a look at branding and vision, and playing our music live, the next stage of our music journey is songwriting.
I look into why songwriting is so important for the music artists, and how itâs the logical next step for us as musicians.
There are two important aspects I believe a song needs to be engaging and grow a solid fanbase. The first is story. Our songs need to follow a musical story and flow. This means writing a solid beginning, middle and end and taking the listener omg a journey. There is a good set up, a well placed build, a moment or two of tension, and a fulfilling release and hero moment.
The second is the musical elements, and making sure theyâre working together to create the magic in your song. This is the melody, harmony, rhythm, and lyrics. Making sure all the elements enhance each other, and donât cause our brain to do unnecessary thinking that takes away from the enjoying and emotion of the art.

Playing music, itâs stage 2 of the artist lifecycle, and it plays a massive role in developing you, and unleashing your inner artist, why? because it grows both your audience, and your ability. So what does this mean for you trying to make music your living? Letâs talk about it.
To get anything started, you have take action, you have to get the ball rolling. To be a successful music artist you have to start playing your music. If youâre new this could mean finding some musoâs and having a jam, or it could mean calling a venue and getting that gig booked. If weâve been through the life cycle of a music artist before, and weâre on round 2. This could mean touring your music, actually playing the songs youâve recorded to your captive audience.
Youâll achieve two major things by actually playing your music,
Playing music regularly will grow you as an artist, It will grow your skill, your confidence, and your audience.

Brand is who you are, and itâs presenting that clearly for your audience, so they know what to expect and what they will feel when they engage with your music. You take the guess work out for your audience, and this means you grow, and they expand.
In this episode I unpack branding for you or your band as artistâs. Branding seems like a business term, and we like to keep business seperate from art right? Perhaps treating our music more like a business will help us to grow.
I look at your initial desire for your music, and what caused that spark, then about the vision for yourself as an artist and how your desire shaped that.
Then I unpack what brand is, and finally how to create brand for your music by asking these simple questions. Who are you? How do people see you? And who is your audience?
This is a great episode for those wanting to get stuck into a music career, and grow your audience.

There seems to be a big gap between me writing music, and me growing an audience that can hear, and connect with that music. So what do I do to bridge this gap? And make a better go of my music?
This episode looks at the life cycle of a music artist, The 5 essential stages every artists must go through if they want a successful music career with a growing fanbase. I go into detail about what is involved in each of this stages, with the plan to expand on each of these categories for their own episode.
The 5 stages are;
This should be helpful for you to know where you are, and where you need to go next, Whether this is the first time youâve been through this cycle and youâre just starting out, or maybe youâve released a couple of albums and youâre going through this cycle for the 2nd or 3rd time.
