Guest Dillon Sage of @holybackboard (TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dasagehoops) or twitter (@dasage) joined us to talk Donovan Clingan, Deni Avdija, Coach Billups, Scoot Henderson and other actual basketball topics. Get ready for the new season with us!

1:00 Icebreaker: Ice preferences (see Dillon’s recommendation on TikTok) also shout out Sy’s Pizza in Eugene!

6:00 Sage’s thoughts on Donovan Clingan as a Blazer after watching him for 2 years. Concerns: big leap in size, foot injuries. Pro: Great passer, sets good screens, Questions: can he play more than 24 minutes?

10:40 How can he help the Blazers on defense? Post defense is A+, all around he’s solid. He’s good at using his length. He jumps at too much, at least he did in college. He will have more help too than guys like Nurk did, with better wing defenders.

14:30 Concern coming from such a good program directly to a tanking team? Not really, sometimes going through hard times makes you better.

20:00 Fan fest takeaway: Blazers got taller.

25:05 What are some of the things Sage will watch for: Donovan Clingan and Scoot Henderson pick and roll. As much as humanly possible.

29:15 Deni Avdija: why did the Blazers get a floor raiser right now? Good passer, defender, can fit around whoever he is playing with. Could be a better shooter if he’d had better spacing. At this point, Portland doesn’t really have better spacing.

35:00 Blazers potential defensive identity and who is going to play offense? Maybe they will lose a lot but opponents will be miserable because of their defense.

41:00 Given the current coaching situation, how likely is it that the Blazers will get an identity ?

47:00 Future of Scoot Henderson, Sage still believes he can be a super point guard.

49:30 Areas the Blazers were the worst in the league - which are they most likely to improve the most in?

54:45 Tara's take: If someone is ever going to stop Wemby, they need someone very large like Donovan Clingan.

56:15 Sage: Scoot could still be the guy. The top point guard prospect he’s ever watched besides Chris Paul, but he needs to play alongside better players in better schemes.

Top 5 pick and roll operator, hopefully develops a shot, a good defender, conductor of the team.

1:00:00 More on Scoot’s defense - he wants to do the right thing but the scheme is not good for him.

1:08:00 What about the two big lineups?

1:12:30 Rose's take: Sad that Boban Marjanovic is not in the NBA anymore.

1:15:15 Sage’s take: volunteer! (also, check out highlights of the Greater Medford area Multi Cultural Fair)

Dillon Sage (@dasage) of Holy Backboard (@holybackboard) joined Tara to help level-set a few observations before the new season starts. We Have A Trail Blazers Playlist!

We were joined by members of the Third Bench, an active fan group from section 317, to make this season’s playlist. Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has been ballin' at the 2023 FIBA World Cup in the Philippines this summer. We could not be more excited because, you see, we fell for this Certified Blazers Cutie years ago.

First, when he was drafted by the Blazers in 2015 and immediately traded to Brooklyn for Mason Plumlee and Pat Connaughton, and again in 2021 when the Blazers signed him to multiple 10 day contracts before their season fizzled out with a first round loss to Denver.

In this re-run of a WHAT pod classic you'll hear a "WHAT about" Episode where Cassidy (so fun to hear her once again!) and Tara get to know the newest players including RHJ before he became king of the (FIBA) World (Cup).

Also in this episode:

  • Cassidy (@cassidyfense) and Tara are in their feels about a week in which the Blazers won a game by 48 points (April 3 vs OKC) and also had 47 points scored on them in the first quarter (April 6 vs Clippers). Oh Rip City the more things change the more they stay the same!
  • Remember when Tara had given up on dunks?
  • Plus, get to know Norman Powell and TJ Leaf (remember when he was a Blazer?)
  • The Chester Connection, a powerful yet fleeting hope we once had that two guys from Chester, PA (Derrick Jones Jr and Rondae Hollis-Jefferson) might connect for an alley-oop.

Tara and Rose will be back in a few weeks! Hope you enjoy this blast from the past!

Today we talked to two creative fans who express their love for the Blazers by making cool stuff. Meet Gina Shaddox (@ginamarina), known in Rip City for her hand-knit Damian Lillard sweater (amongst other creations), and Kaylie Hardin, a sticker, shirt and jewelry (among other things) maker. Kylie was formerly known as Protoplutonian, now goes by @basketghoul.

We talk to them about how they got into basketball and when they started making things. What happens when you create something and then a player leaves? What sort of fun stuff have you gotten to do as a result of being a maker?

Along the way we talk about Sharks vs Mosquitoes, Rip City vs Florida, Damian Lillard, Jusuf Nurkic, how this whole Dame trade is probably just a giant, hilarious misunderstanding. Plus, more Andrew Nicholson content than any other Blazers podcast. Bet.

1:00 Icebreaker: Ocean or Lake?

7:00 Getting to know Gina and her knitting

12:30 Kaylie and her inspiration

18:00 Making things shows people (players) that you see them. It is a kind of appreciation.

20:00 Shout out to Beth K (@thingsbethmakes)!

23:45 Artistic dreams that died with Gary Payton 2’s trade . . .

34:00 When will Portland have a Christmas Day game again?

35:00 Gina proposes an alternate reality that is a perfectly good explanation for why Damian Lillard doesn’t really want to leave.

39:00 We can work it out Dame!

45:00 Fun things that materialized from making stuff.

51:00 Nurk! Nurk? Nurk!

It's halftime of the off season and where are we now? What have the Trail Blazers done to build a championship team around Damian Lillard? There’s a lot of feelings out there. We talk through some of them.

2:00 Rose’s refrigerator is not magnetic.

4:00 Exhausted

7:00 Expectations? What was possible vs what was likely

10:30 What did the flowcharts say?

11:30 Ambivalent or maybe conflicted?

15:30 Youth movement or win now movement?

17:00 Can a GM be too transparent?

22:00 Is the Blazers best path forward internal development? Will a short term trade really move the needle more than a longer term project?

25:30 Players have different value depending on what team they are on

30:00 Concern: is the coach prepared for what is next?

33:00 Cap space doesn’t mean anything until you use it.

35:00 Maybe it's all a smoke screen

36:00 Undervalueing or overvaluing players

37:00 Relief: Blazers picked one of the top 3 players at number 3.

40:00 Really hope that Scottie Brooks who handled multiple megawatt stars sticks around

41:00 Glad Terry Stotts isn’t the coach for all these rookies/young players since he didn’t like playing young guys.

44:00 Worried: about the center position. Not worried: about athleticism

49:00 Hopeful

52:00 Grateful: its hard but that's how this should be.

54:00 Chris Paul is on the Gooooolden Warriors lolololololololol

55:00 Could the Blazers entice Nicola Batum to return? Or any other vets?

59:30 Let the whole hand play out before deciding what happened. Remember that teams are holding cards and we’re not seeing all the moves they have. We only see what they want us to see.

1:05:00 Takes: This is the make or break year for Billups. And, regardless of what path the Blazers take in the rest of the off season, we are set up for interesting basketball and hopefully lots of lobs.

Tara is joined by her former co-host from the Blazer’s Edge podcast, Danny Marang (@dannymarang) , now of @DannyandDusty on 1080 the Fan and Jacked Ramasys (@JackedRamsays) podcast. Much of the talk is about what we know and don’t know about the coach, and what we know and mostly don’t know about the team. Some good stories sprinkled in, a puppy appearance and a healthy dose of dunk talk.

1:00 Life updates, puppy introductions and a new job.

5:08 What can we tell about the coach right now? Willingness to adjust rotations from game to game. Not sure if it's good but at least he’s willing. Stotts stuck with what works, Billups doesn’t know yet what works. Matches up well with Joe Cronin and his vision for the most part.

10:30 Why did the Blazers give someone with so little experience the biggest job?

13:20 Blazers are just missing everything. They are getting good shots but they are not going in. They are playing different roles than they are used to. Equal opportunity offense isn’t everyone’s comfort zone, doesn’t quite match the personnel.

19:00 Gary Payton II is downgraded to out and other injuries.

23:45 How long do they miss shots before we start to worry about it?

26:00 The goals of the team are to figure out who they are.

28:20 Increase in dunks, where are they all coming from?

33:00 Jusuf Nurkic making 3s, what kinds of things does this open up?

36:30 Passing leading to more turnovers - when do we worry and when do they get cleaned up? A deeper look at Damian Lillard’s passing profile.

44:00 Blazers working on communication at practice.

50:00 After Time Outs they are 12th in the league in points per possession - that has fallen off quite a bit in recent weeks.

54:30 Shaedon Sharpe observations - he has it - what “it” is is yet to be determined but it come from his athleticism.

59:00 Shaedon’s growth, including with interviews.

1:02:00 Adding the younger players to the rotation . . . slowly.

1:06:00 The shortest trade talk you will hear on any podcast.

13:00 Tribute videos

18:30 Should we crowdfund a Cameo from Clyde for Damian?

19:00 Thoughts on the trophy presented to Damian for his accomplishments

22:00 We each chose three things to remember: Trading CJ, (24:15) CJ comes back, (27:30) the Barack Obama game, (29:20) Summer League Championship and Trendon Watford’s Finals MVP, (32:30) Small Ball Lineup to close out Sacramento Game, (33:15) Being in Sacramento for that game.

Tara is joined by Oakland native and host of the Wake Up and Win podcast and The Street Roots Podcast, DeVon Pouncey (@Pounce_Sation). They talk about his experience celebrating in Oakland with Gary Payton II and what GP2 will bring to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Then we talk about a few themes that are emerging this Blazers off season:

  • Another 6’3” guard?
  • Are the Blazers no longer just switching out players and actually building a new team?
  • The Blazers are really going to play defense. This time. I swear.

It’s been a while! This week Tara was joined by Dustin and Sage from Holy Backboard, one of Rip City’s longest-running podcasts. We talked about how we still have no idea what the Blazers are going to do, speculated about what might have happened if the Blazers hadn’t tanked and then talked about some potential Blazer draft picks. They had to be separated on AJ Griffin and Bennedict Mathurin. Despite swearing I wouldn’t get attached, I'm now attached to Ousmane Dieng and Tari Eason.

2:10 Celebrating 300 Episodes of Holy Backboard, remembering the early years

9:50 How about the off season so far? Total mystery!

11:10 Who knows what the Blazers are going to do?

12:40 Encouraging move hiring Mike Schmitz

13:50 Any significance to Blazers being named in so many rumors?

16:30 Trying to separate rumors from real possibilities

18:30 The team chose a direction. Was it the right one?

20:30 What would have happened if the Blazers hadn’t tanked?

27:10 Note of course that players were not playing to lose

29:00 It's still theoretical what Josh Hart and Justise Winslow could do on this team

29:50 Could they have been at least good enough to knock out the Pelicans and get their pick?

35:25 It was so easy to climb on board and ride to tank town.

36:10 Holy Backboard Draft coverage history

On the latest episode of We Have A Take, Tara is joined by Terry (@terry_was_taken), formerly of the Drip City Report, to review the fashion of the 2022 Trail Blazers and decide which ones should be nominated for Most Improved ‘Fits. Along the way we talk about who are the most fashionable Blazers, what it means to express yourself through fashion, what we think about players with their own t-shirt slogans, what is good about graphic ts and so much more (and we didn’t even get to half of it)!

Terry came out of retirement to do this podcast and would love to find someone to help restart the @DripCityReport account next season. If you love fashion and the Blazers you’d be interested in helping, send him a DM at @terry_was_taken or you can contact us at @wehaveatake and we’ll pass your info along!

Also, we met up on our friends The Podland Trailcaster’s podcast discord server. We highly recommend it if you like a wide variety of friendly Blazer banter! https://discord.gg/hpHNx4Ue

2:00 Icebreaker: Go-to gameday outfit?

10:30 Getting to know Terry, how he became an NBA fan and why he’s interested in fashion.

16:00 How the Drip City Report came about

19:45 Most fashionable Blazers this season (and an honorable mention for Carmelo Anthony): CJ McCollum, Robert Covington, Tony Snell (that’s why we’re called We Have A Take!), Ben McLemore

28:30 The practicality of Nurk’s wardrobe

32:00 Is there anyone who doesn’t really seem to be into fashion?

40:00 Larry Nance Jr., we hardly knew you.

42:00 First nominee for MVF: Jusuf Nurkic

52:00 Second nominee: Anfernee Simons

58:00 Third (final) nominee: Trendon Watford

1:00:00 Guys to keep an eye on for next year (because we’ll be seeing them for a full season - maybe): Josh Hart, Justise Winslow, Keon Johnson

Tara and Cassidy wrapped up getting to know the new guys by talking about (deep breath) Eric Bledsoe, Drew Eubanks, Joe Ingles, Brandon Williams, Kris Dunn and Reggie Perry. With only a few days left in the season to go, perhaps the Blazers are done adding new players to the roster. Maybe?

1:30 MNCAA Duke loses to North Carolina, why is Cassidy a Duke fan and shout out to Bobby Hurley but never Christian Laetner.

43:30 Kris Dunn - childhood friends with Andre Drummond. More about his journey.

47:37 Reggie Perry, MVP of the 2019 U-19 FIBA World Cup for Team USA. Also wore an excellent draft night outfit.

It's time to have The Talk. Jannelle Moore (@jannelle12) and Brit Robotista (@britrobotista) join Tara to talk about tanking.

Catching up with Jannelle and Brit

4:00 Houston’s tanking back story.

8:15 Golden State’s recent losing/tanking situation

13:00 How does tanking appear to affect the players and the fans? Golden State when they were bad because Steph Curry was out people were more understanding, but it got more confusing the following year when Steph was better and they didn’t go for as many wins as they could.

16:00 Rockets fans (and most fan bases) are very passionate, have a lot of feelings about choices teams are making. Hard on players like Christian Woods who was brought in before the team started actively tanking. Losing gets to everyone.

20:00 Worry about players like Josh Hart who are good and competitive who have been put into this situation. John Wall situation in Houston is largely due to his big contract but it does make things hard. If the players and the front office are open and honest with each other then things are not likely to get toxic.

25:30 When teams tank, do the coaches adjust to the players and personnel that they have? Or do they coach for the player that they will have?

30:00 How has the draft lottery changed tanking? Creating more extremes.

32:30 What is getting you through, and have you found any silver linings?

33:00 Stay off Twitter esp if there are big losing streaks. No one is having fun. Silver lining is that they are trying to build something sustainable.

37:00 When going through a tank, letting go of caring is important for self care.

39:50 Tara’s getting through by being happy for players who are getting opportunities they might not have gotten.

42:00 Hang in there Josh Hart!

44:00 Parting wisdom: Be patient!

Sage (@dasage) from Holy Backboard (@holybackboard) dropped by to talk about the Trail Blazers’ present and future with Tara (@tcbbiggs). While the Blazers lost to OKC in the background they caught up on the Blazers' journey this season. Are there any noteworthy changes to how the team plays? Is ball movement a result of scheme or personnel? Finally, we discuss what the future could look like.

1:00 Holy Backboard update - check out their new #FutureFriday feature where they watch college games featuring top prospects.  5:00 Is tanking the only way?  8:15 Can we tell anything about this team? Like, what kind of basketball do they play?  11:45 Assists and passing are both up, hoping ball movement is new thing that sticks around. 14:20 Will it be different when Damian Lillard is handling the ball again?  16:50 Zone defense -are they getting better and why are they doing it?  20:15 Blazers are not doing Norman Powell any favors right now. There are not plays being run for him, He’s having to settle for whatever he can manufacture or crash the rim. Luckily he’s one of the only ones who can get to the rim.  23:30 Jusuf Nurkic has been really important for the development of Anfernee Simons. But Norman Powell’s return has cut into his usage.  27:30 Who are the most likely players to be traded at the deadline? 30:00 Thoughts about re-signing Jusuf Nurkic.   34:30 Hate what happened to Nassir Little.  37:00 What is the dream team to build around Damian Lillard. Are any of them currently on the roster?  41:00 26 or younger, let's build for the future. Let's talk Trendon Watford, Dennis Smith Jr as deep bench for Portland’s future?  47:00 CJ Elleby 50:00 Tony Snell and Ben McLemore and what expectations where and where they are now.  54:00 Anfernee is taking advantage of the opportunity. But is he a point guard or a shooting guard? 58:00 Staggered guard play and four guard lineups, oh my!

1:15 Ice breaker: [Bachelorette Spoiler Alert] Who is Michelle going to choose? 6:30 The Departure of Neil Olshey, our thoughts on Joe Cronin, and a press conversation for the ages.  14:00 @Justn_B_Leak“It's messy but we still have Dame and a bunch of fun good dudes. There is still hope. I remember the lockout season with Ray Felton and Co. when they had a lockerroom mutiny and the coach was fired midseason. That season was worse I swear.” Worse Season: Blazers Brass: Frustrated Nate McMillan was fired because he lost his team - CBSSports.com  19:15 @NurkicCircus “Do NOT trade @Holla_At_Rob33!!!! He single-handily saved us from a blowout against the @Timberwolves yesterday. 5 steals 4 blocks and numerous deflections. He locked up everyone on that team and was the only reason the game was as close as it was. I STILL have faith In this team as constructed. The rotations just need to change. Less guard minutes and more offense through wings.” 27:30 @Alexancooper “I just wanna see these guys have FUN! And why does the media want Dame out of Portland so bad?” (30:00) 31:11 @loganakio “I love the guys on this team. Jannelle Moore (@jannelle12), writer for sites such as @complexsports , @basketbllnews , and San Jose Mercury joined Tara to provide some outside perspective about what is happening with the Blazers. 2:00 Last year’s soft tank, and working Wiseman back in.  4:30 How worried should I be about the Trail Blazer? Only a quarter of the way into the season, coach is still figuring it out, and now maybe the Blazers will get a GM who cares 7:20 You can’t call out the players in public until you know them well enough. That should be done in house, especially at the beginning, with a thirsty press.  9:55 What disengaged looks like 11:10 Players have to try too hard to fit into the new schemes 13:00 The roster hasn’t been changed that much, they should be figuring it out -- unless they are not buying in.  15:00 Did the coach promise too much to too many players?  17:30 Damian Lillard’s injury 19:20 What are the Blazers going to rally around and an unrelated tangent about Enes Freedom.  20:25 The investigation of the GM wasn’t a distraction. Really? Really?? 22:20 When the Blazers tried to be more aggressive it took the Warriors only a few minutes to figure it out and break it down.  23:40 Ball movement is important but so is player movement.  25:00 Play style charts on Nylon Calculus 28:15 It seems like the coach might be spending more time coming up with new schemes rather than time on the players who are going to carry out those schemes.  30:15 Olshey didn’t leave them with very good options for the future.  33:00 Why hasn’t the team been sold?  34:35 Help might not be coming for a while.  Music used in the episode: “Happy Alley” Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License. Highlights 1:00 Icebreaker: Catching a foul ball at an A’s game and a football at Autzen Stadium.  5:30 Damian Lillard game-winning 3 against the Lakers. Devon couldn’t help but cheer on press row. 8:00 DeVon grew up in the Bay Area playing three sports. Basketball drew him, he especially loved his team. Played four years at Diablo College and Pacific University. As soon as he graduated from college he went right into a sports media internship. 11:00 Was inspired to go into media by a teacher at Pacific University. Had an early internship with John Canzano. He learned from Canzano to be himself.  15:00 Wake Up and Win podcast was inspired by Dr Jules Boycoff’s class on sports and politics. 22:00 Technical difficulties ……... 23:00 Back to basketball, after dating a Warriors dancer he fell in love with Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.  27:00 Perspective on the team from someone who didn’t grow up a fan. Wants to see Damian Lillard win a championship, especially because of his loyalty to the city.  29:00 What would it take for the Blazers to take the next step? They need a second all star, and it's not likely to be CJ McCollum. But it could be Jusuf Nurkic?  31:00 Nurkic’s strong return in the bubble was encouraging.  34:00 Off-season was really good for bringing in guys who are complimentary pieces. Melo was a good get because he is probably really confident after the bubble. Covington is the best wing they have had in a long time, he can be both 3 and D. Not having to constantly switch out wings for offense or defense gives them a lot more versatility. 37:00 Covington has a big load on his shoulders. There are big expectations for him to be a difference maker right away. 40:00 Younger players who will have a big impact. Anfernee Simons is in a good situation, playing behind Damian Lillard and having Lillard’s confidence will be good. His athleticism may give him All-Star potential.  43:00 Gary Trent Jr could have a really long and solid career and be a key role player. DeVon doesn’t see him as an All Star.  46:00 Which outstanding bubble performances are going to turn out to be real and which will be a mirage?  50:00 What do we feel now that we are hearing about players getting COVID-19?  58:00 Outro Find DeVon Pouncey on Twitter @Pounce_Station and find Wake Up And Win on Apple podcasts Thank you for listening to the WHAT podcast!  Join the Women’s Hoops And Talks Facebook group to talk about Trail Blazers with others who identify as women who love basketball. 1:00 Icebreaker: Favorite shared sports memories 12:00 Really well thought out off-season. 13:00 Realistic expectations for Rodney Hood. Restricted minutes, brought back carefully. Be very cautious and don’t let him overdo it. Need to have patience.  15:40 New personnel rebounding 16:30 Derrick Jones Jr is a really good team defender and communicator. Blazers are good on offense, they don’t need another player who can shoot, an athletic wing provides new options. He’s a good off-ball mover. 19:00 Who is going to throw him lobs? 21:45 Role for Gary Trent Jr? The bench is going to be fun. Does Gary finish games? He’s so good at locking up the best player in one-on-one and he can shoot.  24:40 We are so ready for GTJ vs Luka Dončić. 26:00 You need a balanced lineup to compete and Gary brings nice balance.  26:45 Carmelo Anthony reaction. He will be a good release valve on the second unit and will do well if called on to start as well.  28:45 Melo for 6th man of the year award. Lets go ahead and sweep: Dame for MVP, Melo for 6th man, Gary for Most Improved, Covington for Defensive Player of the year. Yeah these realistic expectations are going great.  30:00 Other teams in the west didn’t get that much better.  33:00 Enes Kanter returning made sense for all the teams involved. It was a good move for Celtics.  34:00 Where does this leave Zach Collins? 35:00 There are a lot of guys who are “known quantities”.  37:00 Harry Giles is a passing big, but he doesn’t shoot 3, so he and Kanter probably won’t be on the court together.  39:00 Coaching changes around the league. What is the deal with coaching super teams?  41:00 Evan Turner on the Celtics coaching staff 45:00 We’re glad the Blazers get Christmas off! 47:00 Some former Blazers updates: Mason Plumlee is a good vet for Detroit, Wesley Matthews to the Lakers  51:00 How do we really feel about the Lakers? 52:00 Not getting caught up in the national media opinions.  53:00 Good luck to Hassan Whiteside.  56:00 We could not talk ourselves out of an exciting year for the Trail Blazers.  58:00 Greater Medford Multicultural Fair: check them out on Facebook! 1:30 What are people going to love about Robert Covington? Great length makes him a good defender. He can make big shots when needed.  3:00 What was his role in the small ball system that Houston was running? 6:30 Strengths on defense 7:30 Average performance during the seeding games but was consistent in the 12 playoff games.  9:00 Can get into foul trouble, mostly because he’s a tough defender and offensive players get a lot more leeway.  12:30 It was sad to see Covington go from Houston both times. He fits in well with Portland’s timetable.  13:30 How was his fit with the player? As an older guy on the team, could he be helpful for the younger players especially on the defensive end. He has potential to be vocal on both ends.  Airplane Mode Jones 16:30 Welcome Aaron Washington and JJ  17:30 Mixed reaction in Portland to the news of his signing. What will Portland fans love about him? High energy player, never stops on offense or defense. Switch heavy defense is a strength for him. Loves to win and have fun.  19:15 Energy and ability to guard multiple positions are going to be useful for Portland 20:30 What was his development in Heat rotation/culture like? He was pretty raw when he came in, he figured out how he could fit and contribute not just by dunking. Hopefully he can get into Portland’s rotation 23:30 Should his lack of playoff minutes be held against him? Not when it comes to a deep run. He was quite effective in the series against Milwaukee.    25:00 How can we be assured that all his running is not just for the sake of looking busy? He moves because his opportunities to score come from movement. Offensive contribution is through transition and lobs. He’s not standing on the 3 point line. 28:30 Biggest chance for growth: shooting, getting a bit more creative with the ball in his hands. He has improved as a free throw shooter. He’s not done growing and he works really hard to there seems like he hasn’t reached his peek yet.  32:30 Portland hasn’t been a team that scores a lot of points in transition. Really hoping that a guy who loves scoring in transition can help the team improve in that area. At least maybe the bench will try it.  33:30 what else would we like to know about him? He seems like a man of few words, which is quite different from his on-court personality. He’s a solid locker room guy. (Plus a special message to Kings fans). 37:00 It's been fun watching Portland’s older players grow up since the joined the team. 37:30 Wrap up.  Brit can be found at @britrobotista on Twitter and on Clutch City Control Room (@ClutchCityCR) and Stepback Sisterhood (@StepbackSisters) podcasts  Aaron Washington can be found at @A_a_ron25 on Twitter and the Business Casual Basketball podcast. It's always a treat to talk to Sacramento Kings fan Jill Adge, co-host of Hoop Ball Kings podcast. She was very happy to tell Blazers’ fans what we are going to love about Harry Giles. From flashes of brilliance on the court to overcoming serious injuries at a very young age to being just a fun person to watch, Blazers fans will learn a lot about Portland’s newest forward/center Harry Giles.  2:00 What are people in Portland going to love about Harry Giles? He wears his heart on his sleeve. He plays like every play could be his last. He’s overcome so much to get where he is.  4:00  Projected number 1 pick, two major injuries, so much to go through all before 16 years old. He wrote about it in a Players Tribune article after he was drafted: No Spoilers 5:45 Early comparisons to Chris Webber, there have been flashes of that when he has played.  7:00 Initial reactions when Sacramento drafted him were that he was a risky pick. 8:30 Red shirt year was mostly about helping him build his body. The training staff that worked with him was very close to him and they are excited for him to get a chance in Portland.  11:00 In 2018 the “Super Team, Just Young” came out strong. Giles was a big part of that. Worked great in a high post system. Needs to work on long range shots. During this time he worked closely with Vince Carter.  12:15 Bogdan Bogdanovic praised him. Lots of comparisons to big name hall-of-famer types. Lots of pressure.  13:45 Sacramento Kings fans were shocked that his option was not picked up. 15:30 Prior to the 2019-20 season suspension, Giles again played more and things started to click for him. But Walton avoided playing the younger players.  18:30 A fun guy, really supportive and welcoming on twitter, helped a local broadcaster get enough tweets so he could wear a Harry Giles jersey to his wedding.  20:00 He played both center and forward, had a hard time against big centers like Steven Adams. 22:45 Gary Trent Jr is another player who Portland got from Sacramento.  23:25 Biggest things to watch for are health, fouling, and minutes on the court. The more he plays the better.  24:40 Drew league story. 26:10 Can’t figure out why the Kings put so much care into developing him but then letting him walk away. It hurt.  27:30 Nickname: Gizzle, but like gif, its unclear what the correct pronunciation is.  29:45 Jill can be found on twitter at Jillian Adge (@JillAdge) and if you liked her energy and takes as much as I did, listen to her podcast @hoopballkings. Heck, with so many trades between Sacramento and Portland through the years, you’ll likely hear about future or past Blazers on her show!  Harry Giles ReferencesHarry Giles Would Like to Re-Introduce Himself (David Gardner, Bleacher Report) No Spoilers (Harry Giles, Players Tribune) Harry Giles joins Blazers but still has love for Kings fans, Jason Anderson, Sacramento Bee Thank you for listening to the WHAT podcast!  Join the Women’s Hoops And Talks Facebook group to talk about Trail Blazers with others who identify as women who love basketball. 1:55 Icebreaker: favorite moment from this year’s draft. Payton Prichard getting drafted in the first round, Patrick William’s florist mom, an abundance of graphic ts, athletes at home without a bunch of big cameras in their face. 6:30 Welcome Robert Lord Glovington Covington! On the same timeline as Damian Lillard, this is a win-now move.  9:30 Coach Stotts is excited and it seems like the chemistry is going to be great. Also, snakes and geckos! 10:30 Covington was a four year college player who was undrafted, it's cool to see someone create a place for themselves in the league.  13:00 Covington and Hood probably have a higher ceiling than Aminu and Harkless.  15:00 Was two second round picks too high of a price in the trade for Covington?  17:05 Welcome CJ Elleby! Coached by Ernie Kent. Comes from the Seattle area. Cassidy loves a lefty shooter.  20:00 Cassidy helped Tara who momentarily worried that Rodney Hood was leaving. 22:00 Neil Olshey said that Rodney Hood will be ready, but Zach Collins will not.  23:00 Jamie wasn’t surprised when Carmelo Anthony re-signed in Portland.  25:00 Melo seemed like he had influence on younger players. Plus he still has buckets in him! 28:25 Cassidy is going to be the Derrick “Airplane Mode” Jones Jr defender. We could have someone who is a Slam Dunk Champion while playing in Portland!  31:00 DJJ’s first interview.  35:05 Welcome Harry Giles! Is there a second wave of Blazers forming behind Dame and CJ? He is a clever passer, there is going to be some fun passing. Kings fans were not happy which should make us pretty happy.  39:50 Dynasty definition for those who were wondering. 41:00 Concerns leading into next season. Injuries are always a concern.  42:15 Interlude: Is Enes Kanter the Danny Zuko of the Trail Blazers?  43:00 How ready is Anfernee Simons? We will see but the Blazers believe in him so we do too! 46:00 Anfernee Simons put in a lot of work this summer. Gary Trent Jr did a lot of homework last summer and Simons maybe took a page from his book.  47:00 Wish there were a few more facilitators in the second unit.  50:00 What will Jamie’s job in the media be like when the season starts up?  53:00 Recommended  by the WHAT podcast: Gary Trent Jr.  and Jordan Bolton: A basketball bond that will last forever by Jamie Hudson Thank you for listening to the WHAT podcast!  Join the Women’s Hoops And Talks Facebook group to talk Trail Blazers with others who identify as women who love basketball and those who want to hear what we have to say.
